afam4eva: I wonder what Unilag students will do next.

options are limited to be honest for them. they can still proceed with the court case and test this or remain calm till the end of this dispensation where probably a favourable govt can rename it back.

University of Lagos students should try and look at the brighter side of what Jona has just done. I guess their gross is in the fact the new name of the University is not cool when you pronounce it. My candid advice to the students is for them to set up a committee which will look into how to modify the new name so that it can sound sweet to pronounce and also sound cool. Names like UniM, UniMKO, UniJune 12 etc should be debated upon seriously. My regards to Jona and his boys for the courage to try this stunt at this time of desperation by both graduates and undergraduates. I am just looking forward to what our oga Jona will bring out of his box of mischief on October 1st. Nigerians should get ready, we are all in for a long ride with this guy who not only does not have shoes but also does not have any brains . Now we are beginning to understand why he had no shoes. No brains = No shoes Period!
I great una Naija

I doubt if any government is going to amend it.Any student who doesnt want the name can do a change of school or better still tear up his certificate if he finds MAU on it.Why is everybody taking these so called student serious ?

And only the Senate can amend the Act?

I never said.
Beside, what house will do is on concurrent. And it still does not change the fact that the amendment is minor and will not take all the long process that many of MAULAG student want.
However, there is a way out. When you collect ur certificate, scrape the MAULAG part and replace it with UNILAG. Since it sounds better. Chikena.

So you do realise and admit that the House of Reps should have a say in this and they have not been involved? Can you please be less emotional and we engage ourselves. Next.

At least i have UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS on my certificate, plus Nigeria operates a upper and lower house kind of legislature, the article says they have approved of it(maybe principal officers), but the members are on recess, would it be debated?, the house of representatives has to approve senate's position, what if the government calls it MAULAG and the students call it UNILAG, would that really immortalize abiola?
Re: Senate Approves UNILAG Renaming by Nobody: 3:46pm On Jun 07, 2012
I do not think the senate has approved the new name yet.

Can someone give another source apart from ascology?
Re: Senate Approves UNILAG Renaming by cowgurl: 3:47pm On Jun 07, 2012

no! Did the protest just fall on deaf ears again? 'v gat great news to the
protesters, fail all your courses this semester and believe me you the government will
change their minds about the renaming grin misguided lots.

Laila Ikeji: Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood Abiola University (MAU).

In a report gathered by Ascology News, the Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week by President Goodluck Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw as illegal and unconstitutional.

. Whatever has been renamed can also be ANNULLED by another administration when Power changes hands. University of Lagos will celebrate the Diamond Jubilee as the University of Lagos.

Be informed.
The passage is the amendment to your so-called 'Act establishing Unila'.
And the amendment is a minor amendment to the bill. Its just an amendment in the short title of the bill.
That is where many of you protesting and shouting due process got it all wrong.
In this sort of amendment, there is no public hearing.
Its just one thing that can be done with in just one legislative sitting, except it is not popular with every members.
But unfortunately, most of you undermine the intelligence of GEJ and he beat you all to it by presenting 2 other bills alongside the one of UNILAG.
These two other bills seek the same thing, and they are popular with members.
It will be extremely out of place to pass the other 2 bills without passing the MAULAG bill.
As to the court, the court does not operate on emotion or popular opinion, it operates based on fact of the matter.
Besides, court interpret the law and does not initiate or make a law.
So go back to your school, when you collect your certificate with MAULAG on it, look for a tippex, erase MAULAG and write UNILAG.
Simple as A B C.

House of Rep received the letter the same time senate received the letter from Mr. President.
They can take up the matter any time they wish. It still does not change the fact that the three bills will be consider together or concurrently.
As long as one of the three bill scale through, the remaining will do. Maddibo Univ. of Tech, Michael Okpara Univ. and Mosshood Abiola Uni. the bill for an acts to chage these names will run together. You cannot pass Maddibo Univ. of Tech. without passing MAULAG bill. That is where GEJ knocked out his critics.

He's trying really hard isn't he?

Please he should use that creativity to pass the PIB into law, amend our outdated land use act, and enhance copyright and intellectual property laws in Nigeria. Those are legislations that will put bread and butter on Nigerian's table.

Joblessness.

What has age got to do with it? In that case none of us should claim to be Christians or Muslims since we were not old enough when Jesus Christ and Prophet Mohammed walk the surface of the earth. Can't you people pass your message without all these unnecessary emotions?
