afam4eva:
It is a movie set in Nigeria but not a Nollywood movie. Nollywood movies are movies that are produced and financed by Nigerians in Nigeria. This movie is a foreign movie that the story revolves around Nigeria. Why's that so hard for you to understand

The movie is not a total foreign movie, it is a collab btw the nigerian cinema and a foreign one.......u can search for it.

And a again.......if Hollywood or any film industry wants to shoot a film in a country that has a functioning cinema, its a collab.....cos the industry of the location industry will be involved.

But if it shot in a country like gambia etc in which their movie industry isn't vibrant, then they might not collab......get ur facts......

Then again.....a movie doesn't have to be produced by nigerians or in nigeria to be a Nollywood movie (cos a Nollywood studio might have a branch in another country-thats just one of the reasons). So get that. I'm sure those involved in the industry understand what I'm saying.

It's not a collabo anything. Nigeria has no hand in it. Forget the fact that there are some Nigerian cast in the movie. It's a hollywood movie, simple.

I've checked the edited version of your post and it lacks depth. Why not show us proof of the Nigerian cinema that they collaborated with instead of spreading false information. I'm done arguing with you too.

I don't know what all the fuss is about here

The book is Nigerian, the screenplay is written by a Nigerian, the movie is directed by a Nigerian, major role characters are Nigerians, the movie is shot in Nigeria and UK, the movie is sponsored by British Film Institute. The last point now automatically makes it a UK film Do you know what 'sponsor' means?
Do you know how many years Biyi has lived and created a reputation for himself in the UK Film and Theatre industry? The next thing you'll say is that his adaptation of Things Fall Apart in the UK was not Nigerian because it was produced by a British Theatre Company and some cast members where Brits, albeit Blacks. Ignore the fact that the creative team was made up of Nigerians.

An excerpt from BFI
We use Lottery funds to develop creativity and talent and to support the production of a wide range of British films for the benefit of audiences at home and abroad.
We invest in distribution and exhibition to help ensure that British and specialised films connect with a wide range of audiences across a range of different platforms throughout the UK.
We invest in skills across the film sector and support inward investment and film exports, helping the industry to remain competitive, especially on the global stage.

Will someone explain what is wrong with Biyi using his contacts to have his film go international without it being branded as anything other than Nigerian? I went on websites before I finally opened this thread and no where did it mention the Production House or anything UK, except as a shooting location.

Anyway back to topic smiley
Wanted to share that the movie was filmed in Calabar and ended on 23 June, just a few days before the start of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation Commission for Africa conference in Calabar, at which author Adichie was a special guest.
Cobhams Asuquo and singer-songwriter Keziah Jones are also said to be involved in the production, producing original music for the soundtrack.

Why are you giving us history of the director??!!

Who gives a rats patotootie how many years in lived in the UK and how he made a name for himself??

M Night Shyamalan is Indian. . .does that mean the 6th Sense is a Bollywood Movie?

Slumdog Millionaire was shot in Indian and had mostly Indian cast - Do you see Bollywood claiming it as theirs?

Gives us the name of the Nigerian Movie Production Company that is "Collaborating" with BFI to make this movie, that's all we are asking.

From the IMBD Page
Production Companies

British Film Institute (BFI)

Other Companies
Audiolink Radio Communications walkie talkies
HireWorks Avid Nitris DX rental
Kodak filmstock supplied by
Media Services stationery supplier
Scallywag Travel travel agent
Sky Media Travel travel agent

I don't see no Lagbaja Nigerian Limited ooooh abi do you know something the Producers who gave the info to IMBD, don't know!! lipsrsealed

See that stupi/d afam 4 Eva sef saying it is a Hollywood movie. I wanted to correct him b4 that Hollywood is not involved...bt I jst decided to pack well and gave a two sentence.

I wonder what's with nairalanders and blind argument.....
I can bet my life that neither afam or sisi kill has ever invested in any entertainment industry of any country, so they definitely do not know what sponsoring means.....and they won't let ppl talk. The rest of my post is not for you... wink

1. So letters to a stranger(a 2007 movie) that was sponsored by mtn (a south african company) is no longer a Nollywood movie I guess.
Mama jack (2005 or thereabout) that was filmed in a Hollywood studio is no longer a south african movie?

Incase you guys don't even know....if you are acquainted with current news, you will realise that film makers are now trying to bridge the gap between Hollywood and Nollywood, cos most recent films (some are still being shot but some have been released eg. Missing link, Paparazzi: eye in the dark, stolen etc.... )are collabos of Nollywood and Hollywood productions........

Well let's keep our fingers crossed for this movie (half of a yellow sun).
But nobody should be surprised when you see the credits written as;
_________ productions (UK firm) presents ___________ productions (nigerian firm)
Or ___________ productions in conjunction with ___________ productions
Or you can even see only ______________ productions (nigerian firm)

As I wrote in my former posts, I have watched a couple of them so I know what I'm saying.
And then again, I'm on a plan of investing in the industry my self....and I know quite a lot how the modern Nollywood run their things

Lol!

I'm not saying a Nigerian production company was involved because there was no mention of such except BFI and other UK companies. My point is adaptations of films like Things Fall Apart and Half a Yellow Sun are part of our culture and I can't see it as anything other than Nigerian.
But no point arguing, I just want to be proud of seeing more Nigerians in creative, intelligent films and Nollywood moving from the nonsense we see these days to noteworthy films!

You know what you are very pathetic. You are trying to look like a critic but you look stupi/d instead.
Mtcheew.......so it is now even ridiculous to mistake a UK film for a Nollywood movie. Why if I may ask? No wait, lemme guess.

UK film makers are gods while Nollywood film makers are common Goats....or UK actors are humans while Nollywood actors are aboriginals.......mtcheew, nigerians will never change.

I went through your post I see nothing but another inferiority complex deluded idi/OT.

Well, don't worry.....until about 200 countries molest you and send you packing, you will learn to appreciate what is yours.

Take it or leave it, Nollywood industry is now gaining grounds/recognition every corner in the world. Infact some foreigners have confessed loving Nollywood films cause it is a different dimension away from Hollywood..... It was not a copied one like some other countries. And If you look at it, the four major film industries that are popular at the moment(Hollywood, bollywood, Nollywood and china movies) made its mark as a result of the originality of the concept of their stories. Keep hating.

and I'm done with you as well.

And please do you mind telling me what the meaning of collaboration is?

Sigh!

So typical with Nollywood watching crowd. Not that I blame them mind you. . .just proves the old saying. . .YOU ARE WHAT YOU WATCH (Okay, made that up but it sounds right doesn't it? Hehehehehe cheesy )

But I think half of a yellow sun will be alright anyways. My only problem will be that thandie girl, I hope she won't be giving us one horrible nigerian accent.

*mind you, I also like Romeo and Juliet cos its realistic.....and that's one thing that is hard to find in Hollywood movies. But the British also make quite a number of realistic movies.

Nigerian promoters are teaming up with British producers for the adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's best seller novel 'Half of a yellow sun' whose story is a part of Nigeria's history.

The novel, which won the Orange Prize for Fiction is set during the civil war which claimed over 3 million people. The film will explore the impact of this conflict through the twisting stories of a professor, a high-ranking political figure, a British citizen, and a young house boy.

Meanwhile Nigerian novelist and playwright- Biyi Bandele Thomas, (author of Burma Boy) makes his directorial debut by casting Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dominic Cooper and Thandie Newton on location in Nigeria when the film goes into production in March.

Although roles are yet to be defined, it seems likely Ejiofor might play the high-ranking official (Odenigbo), while Cooper will play the Englishman (Richard) who becomes romantically involved with the twin sister of Odenigbo's girlfriend. Thandie Newton might either play the role of Odenigbo's lady-friend (Olanna) or the twin sister (Kainene).

Half of a Yellow Sun is partially funded by the British Film Institute, and produced by Andrea Calderwood, producer of 'The Last King of Scotland', and Gail Egan, co-producer of 'The Constant Gardener'.

Before unfollowing the thread, I want to make things clear.
1. I'm not disputing the fact that the British are funding the project. What I'm saying is you can't say its a British movie.....and again we can't say its not a Nollywood production. Why?

Cos from various publications it shows more like; nigerian promoters invited the British to invest in the movie (or prolly the nigerian movie industry which is not a new thing).....not that British producers contracted nigeria promoters to help them promote the movie. Infact, from the beginning the movie was a nigerian idea. Its not as if British wants to make a documentary on biafran war.
And then, the production studio handling the shoot doesn't matter cos it a profit oriented firm (and UK, American or åny other studios åre not duty bound to produce only UK films or American films respectively).

The producers doesn't matter either cos they are investing (which anyone can do in any country).

What am I getting at? The only thing that determines the industry that owns a film is the industry that has the copyright. And that we don't know yet cos the movie is still under production.

But judging from what I gathered, most of the sites hyping the movie are nigerian sites. The UK sites carry nothing useful about the movie productions. The one I saw was the only one that carried the news of thandie and some other Hollywood stars shooting a movie in nigeria. Nothing much was even said about the movie. From all these I can only conclude that the copyright ownership might be shared cos of British film institute funding it. Or it might as well be solely owned, depends.

The major roles being Casted by foreign stars has no other explanation than the fact that the person who funds a movie has some sort of control over the casting. Those who knows about movie production knows the point I'm driving out not people like sisi dead who can't explain what collaboration is (and keeps shying away) and she keeps twisting my words. Well peace out, I'm done with this thread cos its getting boring.

Ijebabe, hope to see more of your posts

I see nothing Nollywood about this movie.
A Nigerian story it is, a Nollywood story it's not.

Award-Winning Film Producer, Andrea, Others Shoot Half of A Yellow Sun In Calabar
From Aniete Akpan, Calabar Saturday Magazine - Weekend Beats

Academy Award Winner Andrea Calderwood, Gail Egan, Sandra Obiago, Others Shoot Half of A Yellow Sun Film In Calabar

THE Nollywood film industry is taking Calabar by storm as the finest of film producers, directors, actors and several others from home and abroad have come together to shoot the film, Half of A Yellow Sun, based on the novel Half Of A Yellow Sun, written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

It tells the story of two sisters, Olanna and Kainene, during the Nigeria/Biafra civil war of 1967 to 1970.

The novel revolves around the impact of the war, especially on the lives of top political figures, a professor, a British citizen, and a houseboy. With the departure of the British, the lives of the main characters drastically changed and things were never the same again with the two sisters.

The shooting of the film adaptation of Chimamanda‘s Orange Prize-winning novel started in Calabar on 11 May 2012. The film is being produced by Andrea Calderwood (The Last King of Scotland, Academy Award Winner for Best Actor) and Gail Egan (The Constant Gardener, Academy Award Winner for Best Supporting Actress) and marks the feature debut of acclaimed Nigerian theatre director, playwright and novelist, Biyi Bandele, who has adapted Chimamanda’s bestseller for the screen. Executive producer’s are Yewande Sadiku and Muhtar Bakare.

Andrea Calderwood, leading a UK-based technical crew, Potboiler Productions and the Executive Producer, Yawenede Sadiku and Associate Producer, Sandra Obiago, spoke extensively on the $8 million film, which will debut the cinema in 2013 before flooding the market.

All the settings and locations are in Calabar and Creek town. Nigerian stars, including Zack Orji, Genevive Nnaji, Onyeka Owenu and foreign stars like as Chiwetelu Ejiofor, N. Rose, and John Boyegan (a Nigerian who grew up in UK), are all part of the cast that will make the film tick.

Excerpts of a chat with Andrea:

You have been here for five weeks now shooting a new film, Half of A Yellow Sun, what is the budget size?

I guess this is the biggest movie ever in Nigeria’s film industry. It is an international co-production between Nigeria and United Kingdom. It has a mixture of Nigerian and International actresses and crew.

Why Calabar for this kind of big movie when we have other cities like Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Ibadan?

It was four years ago when B. Bandele, the Director, heard there was a studio in Calabar and he came to look at the studio and was convinced that Calabar is the city you can film the whole Half Of A Yellow Sun. Besides, it a well-organized and preserved city to work in and two years later the production designer came back and discovered that they can actually represent the whole of Nigeria in one city. We are using Calabar to represent Lagos in the 1960s; Kano and different parts of Eastern Nigeria, including Aba, Nsukka, Orlu, Aba. So, it has advantage of wide range of different architecture and different looks.

We are using Creek town in Calabar to represent all parts of Nigeria. But what makes it completely unique is the studio as in other parts of the world where we can build the sets and other props with its fantastic location for the filming.

Furthermore, the support of his Excellency, Governor Liyel Imoke, and Cross River State Government made it possible for us to be here. When we came here, we met with the governor and told him we could not make the film if he did not support us.

You see, a film is a complicated enterprise and here we are screening a whole range of about 200 people from Calabar, Lagos, South Africa and UK. To work on such a big movie, you need a lot of structures and designers. Again, the local government has been very supportive because anytime you need them they are there to assist. So, Calabar city, the studio and the government made it actually possible for us to come down here for the filming.

How would you categorize the movie, Hollywood or Nollywood type?

It is neither of it. Rather it is an international co-production that mainstreams international and home-based stars. I have produced a number of films in different parts of Africa. So, I can tell you that this one’s a different type altogether because it has international stars from UK; the writer and the Director, B. Bandele, are Nigerians and that makes it interesting.

This one is all about Nigerians participating in telling their own story in a unique perspective. It is a love story of two young people falling in love and what happened to them in the cause of their romances.

But what gave the story the depth is the context of the civil war in which families were torn apart; a country trying to be divided and some still trying to stay together in the midst of the war. So, we can only tell that story in Nigeria. It is an international film and we want to an touch international audience. We want to tell a universal story to the universe using a particular incident and locale.

What is the percentage participation by Nigerians?

I think it is about 70 per cent Nigerian. In casting, majority are Nigerian, the crew is about 50-50.

Could you tell us some of the historical sites you are using?

We have filmed at Tinapa studio, Government Lodge, Creek Town, Boco Street in Calabar South, various government edifices, including Okoi Arikpo House, the secretariat and a wide range of buildings in Calabar and Creek town
