Dust, causing light scatter/dispersion generally lowers the harvest during the dry season. And the stinging heat from the sun seems rather intense during that season. As you've rightly observed, both lower harvest during the dry season. My 3kW of panels peaks at 1.9kW instantaneous during the dry season but peaks at 2.6kW during the rains. There are brief spurts of nameplate value harvest.

If you're predominantly "off-grid", there are never enough hours of sunlight in one day to charge your system to a 100% while not trying to exceed the typical C10 (13% charge rate (or FLA or 20% for AGM). Unless your PV array and battery bank are way oversized for your requirements (which I did).

The trick is to have panels about 10 - 20% over the required to charge your system. I have 67%% higher. That way, you still get by on sunless days. On other days, opportunistic loads take up the slack. I never go below 30% DoD. Most days its between 3% and 10% now (NEPA has been behaving themselves lately). I know the demerits of shallow cylcles on flooded so I do a controlled mini-equalisation every now and then.

right on the money. I did notice though (and I have logged stats to back this up) that although your panel never reaches pick power during the dry season, overall energy generation is usually much higher due to the fact that you are guaranteed a steady and mostly uninterrupted supply of sunshine sometimes from 07:00 - 17:00. Hovercast weather disappears and power from the sun even though not at it's pick, does hold steady. Same can not be said for rainy season. One very good harvest day can be followed by 3 sunless days.

Hello House
My inverter waste much of my precious battery power.

It’s my belief that DC watt is 92% of AC watt and current stays same whether DC or AC.
Can someone help with explanation why my inverter draws so much juice just to produce so little. For instance, it draws 11.60A@307W DC to produce 1.47A@247W AC to power load (of a Deep Freezer, 32” LCD + 2 Decoders, Newclime Ceiling Fan).
See readings at 8.59AM this morning.
For the time being, I installed DC watt meter at output of my Battery Bank and another just before my CC to read-off harvest directly. While AC watt meter to monitor my AC loads.

An experienced explanation will do my nerves good.
Thanks
(Meanwhile, my inverter idle state is just 27.7w and has good surge allowance when fridge and freezer compressor kicks.)
Name of your inverter. From what you have posted it seem your inverter uses between 100w / 110w for idle load which is very high but not unexpected with some inverters

Hello everyone, i need some quick advice here please.

I have a 800 VA sukam inverter, a 250 W panel, and a 30 amps PWM controller. My current 150 AH battery is long due for replacement, so i am thinking of replacing it with a new 200 AH. My concern is that the panel may take too long to charge the battery full, even though i don't intend to discharge it to more than 50%. Am i just better off with a smaller battery, say a 150 AH or 100 AH?

I also need recommendations on reliable battery brands to buy (preferably from experience), i kinda believe the so called 'telecom' batteries are solid, even if they are more expensive.

Can you correct B above ( 1 x12 V ) cannot be connected to 24 V inverter .

In general any Lead Acid battery ( wet , AGM, GEl) likes to be used on C10 or C5 rate based on design . Any higher current drawn above C10 will result in reducing teh overall AH ( energy delivery) of the battery .

So a 220 Ah battery will be able to deliver 220 AH ( 220*12V-2640 watt) if the load is 22 Amps ( 12 V x 22 amps- 264 Watts) for 10 Hours
Same battery at Higher load will likely drop to 170 AH

Also Keep in Mind the battery should be used only upto 50 % DOD in Home solar applications which means a 12 V 220Ah battery system should be considered In design to support a load of 264 watts only for 5 hours

Phones / Re: Nokia Lumia 920...finally A Smartphone From Nokia That Can Compete! by bigbrovar: 3:02pm On Sep 16, 2012
texazzpete:

1. the words 'playing catchup' are used by Android fanboys to suppress genuine improvements in competing devices. Android devices led the specs race because a) the poorly coded Android OS genuinely needed powerful hardware to run anywhere near as smooth as their competitors b) There are far more OEMs making Android devices than any other mobile OS...so new tech is much more likely to debut there.

I didn't see anyone tell us how Android was playing catchup when they debuted project butter on Jelly bean which was designed to bring the level of smoothness that WP and iOS users had been used to for ages.

Catchup or not, the Lumia 920 has a better screen than the SGS III which is THE Android flagship. That's what matters now. Specs of the day are what is used to compare devices.

2) Your observations on the Lumia 920 launch are overly pessimistic. The buzz online was VERY favourable for Nokia. The majority of the tech journalists at the venue were very impressed with the looks, build quality and the camera features...with lots of kudos for the curved screen. The reactions on Twitter were pretty positive, with the only dissenting voices mainly complaining about the dilution of the Pureview branding.

It's anybody's guess whether WP8 still has a fighting chance...but i'd say the Nokia 920 is really leading that charge in a positive way.

For the low end market, Nokia still has a chance to make a dent in the Chinese market. No matter how many Android phones are sold for $50 in the market, the likes of Lenovo have shown convincingly that the public are willing and eager to put down up to $200 - $250 for a low end phone. It's that market Nokia can excel in. They've recently inked a deal with the largest telco in China to stock the Lumia 920.

China aside, there's india. India historically has been a strong market for Nokia...and a low end device there will sell MILLIONS. No question about that.

The reason why Nokia's share price took a beating was that there were no definite announcements on price and release dates. Those are the numbers analysts thrive on, not tech specs. Why do you think Apple's stock price is rising like mad after the reports of incredible pre-order numbers came out?

I will try to refrain from turning this into a android vs wp debate. That's a topic for another day. All I will just say is. Specs does matter at the end of the day. If the first and second Gen wp hadn't had a hardware limitations and had shipped with powerful processing powers they would not have had problems updating and would have been eligible to run wp8. Even the iPhone often touted as the benchmark for fluidity even on lower spec hardware compared to Android saw the iPhone5 Shipping with a A6 processor based on cortex 15 which is generations ahead of anything running on any smartphone or tablet.. with a gb of ram this is the same iPhone said to only need a fraction of what android devices need to run like liquid yet apple is not taking any risk or pulling punches.

The paradigm of computer usage is shifting more and more to mobile as more and more people are shifting their everyday computing needs to mobile. As I write this I am downloading some torrent from my smart phone. Something which I won't even have thought of some years back. The arm race (pun unintended) is no longer unique to Android. If you want to compete in the mobile space u need solid hardware.

Again the wp8 is not a bad device neither is playing catch up by Nokia a bad thing. But guys this is Nokia we are talking about not HTC. When I want to think of Nokia I want to think of the n95 the Nokia that leaves us wowed. That Nokia (beside the cam) was very OK..yes it has a higher pixel density than the iPhone 4 but the iPhone brought retina so that's playing catch up. yes it has a 4.5 inch screen. Again we have seen that before. Yes the screen claims to be very bright and allows sun light and all.. again that can hardly be described as a wow factor. The design of the phone is great as was the L900 and the n8 and the n97 before that. And yes though the phone was well received (well its a great phone) Yet the general mood from the tech press was kinda meh. The only part which received great reviews was the design (an area Nokia always get raves for) and camera ( Yet another undisputed area for nokia) L920 is a great device as the l900 before it. However will it be great enough to see Nokia to the promise land ? I very much doubt it.
Phones / Re: Nokia Lumia 920...finally A Smartphone From Nokia That Can Compete! by bigbrovar: 6:48am On Sep 16, 2012

1) 'Catch up'? Resolution aside, The screen in the Lumia 900 was already top class...it wasn't lagging behind in any way. In fact, the Lumia 900's screen had the best sunlight visibility rating of any phone out there...hands down better than the HTC One X and miles better than the disappointing outdoors performance of the Galaxy S III. I swear, on truly bright days when I'm heading to the office restaurant, I can barely make out the screen of my SGS III.

Yeah Much good it did the x1 and the L900 before it. And like you noted about the superLCD Nokia is not the first to ship this tech. Might be marginally better than competition but its not something mind blowing as the way super amoled+ was with the sgs2 which completely out classed the existing competition when it was released.

As far as hardware is concerned, Nokia's Lumia 920 isn't just 'catching up' to the competition, it's outclassing 'em on so many points.
The 920's screen has a higher pixel density than the iPhone 4S and the SGS III, has better sunlight readability, uses the same SuperLCD that enabled the One X's screen to outclass the superAMOLED on the SGS III. Also, Nokia boasts that the screen refresh rate is higher than any other phone ever made.
Again playing catch with the hi res
Screen Game screen density gets to a certain point when it stop making a different anyway yes the Lumia has a slightly higher screen density than the iPhone Which is a great improvement for Nokia but again its a move which brings them inline with the current norm.

Nokia also says it's the brightest screen out there....and of course the ability to use the
And of cause companies don't go over board in hyping their product at press releases .. one would have to wait till its released to get the verdict on that.

phone with gloves or mittens should help out in cold climates. I remember suffering in the cold with my iphone some years back when i had to take off my gloves in sub zero weather just to use the phone's GPS.
yaaarn that was the reaction this feature got on twitter as I was following the event. Cool feature to have no doubt.. but is this enough to get someone off the iphone? I doubt. Yes its a feature which would gladden anyone already out to get the lumia and who happens to leave in the cold region of the world.. not one to make anyone get of their iPhone/Android

2) Unlike palm and possibly Samsung, Nokia has used an popular standard for the Wireless charging feature so you can very easily snag cheaper 3rd party chargers that can be gotten for cheap.
Wireless charging is still generally (like nfc) a niche unless and until the wireless charger is included in the retail box for the device then it will continue to be something u tick in your specs check list. Even with that I have lost count of how many device have that on their spec sheet atm. Again Nokia is playing catch up to what already exist. How good their iteration of these features (which have become standard components of most smart phones nowadays) are in the real world is yet to be seen.

3)

There are already rumours of mid and low end WP8 phones from Nokia targeted at Asian markets to gain back marketshare
even it that turns out true I doubt this is possible. Android totally rules that space now.. any Chinese company can download the android source and slam it on a $50 Hardware while Techno, zte and Even samsung and others totally dominate the =>$70 Phone segment. Neither Wp8 nor Nokia can compete that low Both are too rigid. They are android devices that cost cheaper than Nokia s40 low budget phones.

In all the L920 is a good phone on paper. It features a great camera something which has been the trademark of Nokia since forever. But u get the feeling this device is a year late. It would have been different if it was released even before the galaxy s2 or at least around that time for it to have blown people's mind away.. all the buzz words like retina and wireless charging LTE and a 4.5 screen that super responsive would have won it phone of 2011 (same goes for wp8) even it shipped wp7 it would have been future proof. Imagine if the L920 had been the L900 and sold at $99? This was why the reception to the announcement was lukewarm at best. even Nokia shares lost close to 10 % value during the announcement and more when no release date was announced. It shows how less impressed the general world and even Nokia's share holders were.
Phones / Re: Nokia Lumia 920...finally A Smartphone From Nokia That Can Compete! by bigbrovar: 5:55am On Sep 09, 2012
2)visibly better screen (Much better sunlight readability, better contrast, 25% better brightness than the brightest phone on the market, ability to manipulate the screen even while wearing gloves, 'floating' display)
3)Far better Cameras (Nokia promises the best image stabilization of any phone camera, better low light performance than even many SLRs)
4) Wireless charging (charge without wires)
5) 2000 mah battery

Beside the camera (and seriously Nokia still owns that crown) I haven't seen any thing here that blows mind when compared to what the competition is offering. For Nokia and maybe the wp ecosystem its a great leap no doubt but compared with what is already out there it seems like playing catch up.

I guess one will have to wait and see how things are implemented because right now no known human outside of Nokia has been allowed to play with with or even touch the l920. Until the device is released or reviewed I think it is too early to get excited.

Let's see how well the city lens map thingie works in real life usage.

How accessible the wireless charging would be. (The galaxy s3 is also touted to support wireless charging but until the accessories for enabling wireless charging becomes part of the retail box. It won't ever become mainstream. Just an item to tick of in the specs sheet.)

How really good the display is compared to the competition.

And most important of all. We would get to see how really good wp8 is.right now we can only assume that it would be better than wp7 as it based on NT core and allows for native c++ in 3rd party app development. However we should remember that wp8 is a complete rewrite and in many sense a 0.1 release. The process of porting NT down to mobile will not be easy so fingers crossed on how the final product would turn out.

The way I see it the event of last week (where no announcement or pricing plan was released) was a desperate attempt to get something out there before iPhone 5 is announced and released. Elop did promise to shorten the length of time between device announcement and their release that did not happen last week. I keep my fingers crossed and see how the final product performs. Call me a doubting Thomas but many times I have been burnt by Nokia in the past as what was announced always turns out to be awesomer compared to what is actually released. (Looking at n97, n8)

As for gnome, i soo glad ubuntu decided to create unity. gnome is going downhill and the desktop shell is atrocious

Yeah kde is tight, still some areas need work on before I can recommend it to new users but there are working in the right direction. As for gnome I think the core technology behind gnome3 is good. Gtk3 is a welcome development, and apps like network manager, print manager, monitor /display utility etc are really good in terms of design and usability. Many of this core technologies are the shoulders which Linux Mint cinnamon and ubuntu's unity are standing on. It's just the shell that I can't stand.

Can you elaborate more on the 'lack of support for native 3rd party apps' line? Last i checked, there are 100,000 apps on the WP marketplace...and they certainly aren't web apps.

I meant app created using native C C++ all windows phone 7.5 applications are developed in C# or Visual Basic .NET and compiled to platform-independent bytecode. Wp8 has however enabled the creation of apps in native C C++ which should be a welcome development for game developers

Phones / Re: Samsung GS3 Vs Nokia Lumia900 by bigbrovar: 2:52pm On Aug 19, 2012
I think this post is flawed as it is really unfair to compare the L900 to the Sgs3. Yes both devices are good in their own way but are in completely different leagues. From hardware to software and even price point. The sgs3 and L900 are not in the same class. One (the L900) is more or less meant to be a stop gap hardware running a stop gap OS both of which (hardware and software) are coming from technological Goliath who are on the path towards getting back their mojo but who are not quite there yet. On a software stand point the L900 ships with an immature OS which still has a lot of limitations in terms of missing features and capabilities (lack of support for native 3rd party apps, or true multitasking, who highres display, or a dual core processor etc) many of the software limitations of the lumia is reflected in the hardware it ships with. This is not meant to be an indictment of the lumia rather it is the reality of the device. And why it should not be compared to the sgs3 a device from a very confidence company which has thrown in its very best and which runs a very powerful and matured OS at the pick of it's revolution. The lumia is not a bad device for what it was meant to be.But it is not (and was never meant to be) in the same class of the sgs3 its like boxing comparing two very good boxers in different weight division. The heavyweight would win any bout with a feather weight boxer almost by default and that is the best analogy I can use.

I am looking forward to what Nokia has to offer at Nokia world next month where they are expected to unveil the new windows phone 8 device. Yes That is one device which can fairly be compared to the sgs3. At least on paper the wp8 appears to have fixed most of the flaws of its predecessor shipping with a software capable of taking advantage of powerful hardware and which comes with tools that will allow the developer build (native) powerful apps (sharing the same code base with windows cool. Come September one can see sgs3 take up someone his own size. So I guess we can call this one to be continued. Just IMHO.
Phones / Re: Guys Using N900, Advise Me, Am Planning To Buy The Phone by bigbrovar: 11:39am On Oct 03, 2010
I have been using the device now for close to 13 months and I have to say its the best phone I have ever owned. (I have used almost every smart phone from Nokia in addition to the iPhone and handled the google Nexus 1 Android phone for close to a week) It is very powerful and has a very dedicated community behind it. However I would advise that before getting the phone you should do more research about it to see if its a device for you. I have seen many people who use the device but are unable to unlock its potential get frustrated and sell the phone. As good as the N900 is its not a mainstream device for everyone. Nokia targetted the device at geeks and tech enthusiast not the normal users. Even then its not that hard to use if you are not new to smart phones you would soon learn to love the device. I would advise you watch some youtube videos of the device before you make up your mind. It would go along way to show you much about the device and how best to use it.

The device has alot of strong points for one the browser support is like no other. you can install firefox and opera and the default browser is one of the best u can get on a mobile phone (blowing what u have on the iphone out of the water completely)

Multimedia support is another strong aware where the N900 shines. It plays avi, xvid, mp4 even dvd files (VOB(, dvix etc all out of the box without neeed to encode and the video comes out clear and without any stuttering.

IM and SMS is also a strong area the way it support your IM is so integrated and u cant find that level of integration in any phone. eg your yahoo contact show up as part of your phone contacts so you can always merge a person's yahoo ID with his phone number. when you stroll through you contacts u would see a yellow glow beside the contacts who are online. msging app called conversation has pluggins for facebook chat, gtalk, msn, yahoo, jabber, skype etc. with the facebook chat it also pulls in the contact avater and date of birth (using an app) and even location and adds them to the contact details (the date of birth is added to your calendar and a reminder set for you) and the location is also added so that when u click on it it opens ovi maps and shows you the map to that location. You can also merge contacts informations (using an app to do it automatically or u can do it manually) into one. hence I can merge a person's gtalk, yahoo, skype, and facebook handle to his gsm number as one contact infor. and when you try to call the person the phone would ask if u wanna call his gsm or gtalk or skype. It also support video calls for both gtalk and skype.

Another area of strength of the N900 is its ability to multitask. No phone does it better than the N900 it has like 256mb or ram and 754mb swap memory hence it is very easy to run up to 12 apps simultanously and all running apps can be view as a dashboard (u have to youtube to appreciate this)

as a geek device the N900 has no rival. you can install android and even Nokia's latest project Meego on it. It allows u to dualboot debian linux on it and u can even overclock the cpu to up to 1.2ghz from 600mhz. it has apps for vpn, nmap, and even a commandline shell witht he gnu toolchains and comes installed with python out of the box. If you are familiar with linux then u would be right at home as the N900 runs a modified version of debian linux.

I don't intend on selling my device anytime soon but still always caution potential buyers to look before they leap. The nokia N8 would be out very soon you might wanna wait a few weeks (A nokia employee informed me it would be released on october 13) since the N8 is a more mainstream device.

Wrong.
MeeGo WILL be the future of Nokia. But as for now, Nokia's flagship device will be the N8. What, you think they'd throw in a big screen, sleek aluminium body, the most powerful mobile phone camera till date and a very powerful GPU in a mid tier device?
Nokia has always been about hardware first, and the N8's hardware is premium

I usually try to do my research before making a claim. The fact that a device is flagship does not mean its upper tier device. Even looking at the specs its using a 256MB of ram on an Obsolete Arm 11. yes it is clocked at about 600mhz. In Term of raw processing power the N8 is inferior to the N900 a device released 13 month ago. yes it has hardware acceleration, (same as C7) yes it Aluminum casing. And yes for now It is Nokia's Flagship. Still Nokia are positioning it as a upper mid range device Hence the relative cheap price about (350 Pounds unlocked). The High end device is expected to be announced later this year and the specs is expected to be very high end and compete directly with the best of iOS Android and Windows 7 series Devices and it is expected to ship Meego. The N8 is by no means a mid range device like the C7 its about a step higher in class. If phones where people. The N8 would be in the upper middle class and definitely more of a stop gap than Nokia's answer to the beasts being released by htc|apple|motorola. If you doubt me. Maybe you would believe when you hear it from Nokian Himself. http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/06/nokias-vp-talks-n8-meego-milestone-product-tablets-android/

I beg to differ. The N8 and E7 are top tier Nokia handsets. MeeGo will be the promised land some day, but for now those phones will be the flagship consumer and business phones for Nokia.

Actually the N8 is not being touted as a Top tier device, it is more in the (as I said earlier) Upper Mid range line. Nokia has reserved the Top Tier line exclusively for Meego. The new Nokia flagship would be Megoo going forward for Nokia. Symbian would be used to compete in the Mid range and lower tier segment. This is where Qt comes to place as it helps to converge all the products so that developers can write apps and easily port them to symbian and meego.

Most of the phones listed here are still stop gap measures meant at stopping the rot* not fixing it, just as symbian ^3 is still not the promiseland for nokia. All the devices announced in nokia world are not high end devices. Even the N8 is between the upper mid range line. The real ace for Nokia is the Rumored N9 which is expected to be the first device which ships Meego. Meego is what nokia intend to use as a weapon to battle android and iSO on the high end device spectrum. It would be a long battle in the mobile space but in this battle for once we the grass can sit and enjoy smiley

FYI OBJ lost in the southwest twice when he ran for president. The Yoruba people hate him but that is not even the issue. The point is IBB administration for 8 years took Nigeria to the dogs. I lived through his era and I have a long memory. Tell me one thing IBB achieved through his administration. Please do this without telling me how he is not as bad as YXZ cus doing that only shows you are nothing but someone whose opinion is for sale
Technology Market / Re: Laptop Skins Now In Nigeria: Dazzle Your Laptop by bigbrovar: 11:22am On Aug 21, 2010
@TIMMIE002 I have no problem with your business man. Keep it up and wish you luck. It takes innovation to provide a need. Even if you are not the maker, That you thought bout getting this laptop skins and fulfilling a craving deserves some credit.

My concerns is in how this thread made it to first page. I have been a Nairaland member since 2006 and I have never seen a time when a thread or a marketer had his business on the front page. It is one thing to have interesting stories there, But where we have one thread which benefits the OP. Its brings up issues of fairness and transparency. We have tons of people in Computer Section (and am not included) who sell things from Ipads to Laptops, even the auto sections some sell cars and we all know how much a marketer loves publicity. It would be in fairness to all to just leave threads about buying and selling especially when the person selling started the thread out of the frontpage. If not then at least it should very open and at least transparent. People should be made to know what it takes to have their own goods in the frontpage even if there have to pay for the privilege.

grin grin grin grin

see!!! when the pros come out stuff gets done!!!!

@afo, thanks man!!! but would sudo be out of place in that script, cos i prefer running that jar with elevated privs wink wink

well will try it sha!!!

If what you are running is a GUI program then it is better you run it with gksudo which is the recommended way for running GUIs

Your best bet however is to save the script with whatever name you choose and move the script to /usr/local/bin/myjavascript
(make sure that your have right click on the file and set it to execute)

now you can add the script to your sudoer list so that when you execute the script it runs as root automatically without asking your permission. (This is not advisable unless you know what you are doing)

to do this run the following command

visudo
and add this line to the end of the file
bigbrovar ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD:/usr/local/bin/myjavascritpt

(edit the line as it relate to your case replacing bigbrovar with your username and myjavascript with the name of your script)

now the do ctrl + o to save what you have done and ctrl + x to exit

to make this a launcher which would show up in ur system menu

open gedit and create a file called nameofmyjavascript.desktop
populate the above file with the following

[Desktop Entry]
Name=myjavascritpt
Exec=myjavascritpt
Type=Application
Categories=Network
Terminal=false

save the file and move it (as root) /usr/share/applications

let me know how that went smiley

Good to see ya. mehn its been ages. ive also been away, school work programming its been hectic as for Mr Seun i guess he's changed  grin

afo how far been awhile. hope everything is fine sha. cheers

@all I got a mention from @muyiscoi about renewed interest in the Ubuntunigeria blog. The idea of the blog and a loco group was actually conceived  me and Afolabi (adewaleafolabi) we came up with the name registered the blog and even did the logo. We also populated it with content. At that time Afolabi had some challenges with internet access so I did my best to keep the blog afloat. The idea of the blog was to have a place where we can direct  noobies to linux to create a place where there can come and have solution to teething problems and to also be an avenue where people can hold discussions and share tips and walk around some of the issues concerning linux usage in Nigeria. Ralvy later joined in and 3 of us all worked to generate interest in the blog. At that time I was running a program where I created offline cd based repositories which allowed users install popular ubuntu applications from their cds without requiring an internet connection. The scheme was quite successful but we had issues of distribution. At that time I was in school and had to use the little money I had to buy parks of dvds which I used in creating the aptoncds. many people around Nigeria wanted us to send cds to them but there was little resources and no interest at sustaining the few of us making this effort. Soon I lost interest in the blog cus I have my own blog to meantain and there was just lack of interest in the ubuntunigeria blog. Guess that is a short history to where we are now. If anyone is interested in picking up the touch I am always willing to him. you can reach me on #nglug @ freenode.net at least am always there during the hours of 8am -5pm u can come and leave me your email and I would make u and editor to the blog which would allow you to write post. anyway nice to see you guys flying the touch. I dont frequent here often cus of the general difficulty in posting to nairaland but I am always available on twitter and identica and also on irc.

lolz.

have no fear, the next gnome desktop, which should be near now, will blow KDE out of the water for looks and effects!!!!

I have seen and know alot about the next gnome 3. The only it it would do is blow its users out to xfce or kde. Gnome 3 seriously turns ur desktop into a smart phone like UI. and beside clutter (which is has an uncertain future since Intel - the company behind clutter - abandoned it for Qt -kde toolkit- in meego) what is the future of gtk? right now gtk is a relic and gnome 3 is not going to change that. replacing Nautlius with a search based filemanager is also a failed move people would still want to do their good old file management. and dont tell me about gnomeshell. That crap has no place for average users or even the enterprise. I look at the future of the gnome desktop and I smh. No wonder even Ubuntu as decided not to ship gnome 3 with the next version of ubuntu. also even though kde ships with kwin which does native compositing you can still using 3rd party compositing manager like compiz. This is not possible with gnome 3 you are stuck with Mutter (metacity + clutter) seriously the future of the gnome desktop is dire and nothing to be excited about.
