ATIKU VS. THE U.S: AN EXPLAINER

Over the course of the present election cycle, some of the discourse has been centered around the travel status to America of former Vice President and current presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar. To clarify, here are answers to some of the questions on our lips.

Why couldn’t Atiku travel to the U.S?

Atiku’s issues with the U.S. date back to his tenure as Nigeria’s Vice President between 1999 and 2007. In 2004, Atiku was barred by then President Bush from being issued visas to the United States alongside other corrupt Politically Exposed Persons (PEP). The Atiku ban from the United States followed a probe by the U.S Senate of corrupt practices in the Third World and its negative effects on the development of government, democratic principles, and the rule of law.
A bit of clarity as the possible reason for the ban came from the revelation of a report by the Politically Exposed Persons (PEP) committee in 2010. The reports alleged nefarious activities involving Jennifer Douglas a U. S citizen and fourth wife of Atiku. According to allegations by U.S. Senate investigators, Jennifer Douglas assisted Atiku with bringing over $40 million in “suspect funds” into the United States through wire transfers sent by offshore shell companies to U.S. bank accounts.
The reports also revealed the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleged the receipt of over $2 million in bribe payments in 2001 and 2002 to Jennifer Douglas, from Siemens AG, a major German corporation. Siemens pled guilty to bribery charges in 2008 and agreed to pay a $1.6 billion fine.
For all the allegations, Atiku has repeatedly denied the involvement of himself and his wife. He has been quick to point out that neither he nor his wife have faced any criminal charges in the United States.

So he finally went in January. What did he do?
The primary purpose of Atiku’s trip to Washington two weeks ago was meeting with top U.S diplomats and lawmakers. During the course of the trip, he met with Tibor Nagy, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, which was made possible by one of the U.S lobbyist firms representing him, Ballard Partners. The significance of his meeting with Nagy was to show that the United States wanted to be seen as being free and fair in its dealings with a central character to the upcoming elections.

Atiku also met with business leaders at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a few lawmakers in the House of Representatives who specialize in foreign affairs, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey. He also met with several Nigerian expatriates.

How was he able to get in?

As reported by Reuters, Atiku’s ability to gain temporary entrance into the United States came as a result of the work of two U. S lobbying firms for whose services the presidential candidate paid quite handsomely.
In December, Atiku personally sought the services of Holland & Knight in order to secure a visa. According to a lobbyist for the firm, members of Congress were enlisted to request one on his behalf. The firm has been paid $80,000 so far.
Ballard Partners was also hired by Atiku’s political party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), for a fee of $90,000 per month in September 2018, according to U.S. disclosure filings.

Nigerian presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar visited Washington two weeks ago to meet with top U.S. diplomats and lawmakers thanks to a temporary suspension of a travel ban linked to decade-old bribery scandals, according to people familiar with the matter.
The U.S. administration has not commented on Atiku’s status or his travel, but several U.S. diplomats and others familiar with the visit told Reuters the former vice president has been banned from entering the United States for the past several years after he figured prominently in two corruption cases.
For Atiku’s supporters, the fact he was able to visit Washington on Jan. 17 and 18 without being arrested was proof that the allegations were baseless.
“It is fake news, and we showed that,” said Harold Molokwu, who heads the U.S. chapter of Atiku’s People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria.
Several U.S. government officials said the travel ban was waived temporarily by the U.S. State Department after lobbyists mounted a campaign among congressional lawmakers arguing that the administration should not snub the leading challenger to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb. 16 election.
One person familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Atiku was allowed to enter because the United States saw little benefit to creating bad blood with the man who might be the next leader of Africa’s most populous nation and the continent’s biggest oil producer.
Lobbyists hired by Atiku said they sought to overcome resistance at the State Department by securing support from members of Congress for the visit, as well as arguing that the top U.S. official for African affairs, Assistant Secretary Tibor Nagy, had an obligation to encourage democracy in the seventh most populous country in the world.
“Assistant Secretary Nagy was pleased to meet with him and share the U.S. government’s expectations that Nigeria’s elections be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful, and reflect the will of the Nigerian people,” a State Department official said, stressing the department had not requested the waiver.
Buhari first took power in a military coup in the 1980s but was democratically elected in 2015. He is seeking a second term in part on an anti-corruption platform.
Atiku’s visa troubles stem from when he served as Nigeria’s vice president, from 1999 to 2007.
He figured prominently in the corruption trial of former U.S. Representative William Jefferson, who was accused of trying to bribe Atiku in an effort to expand a technology business in Nigeria. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. His sentence was subsequently reduced.
Separately U.S. Senate investigators in 2010 alleged that one of Atiku’s four wives helped him transfer more than $40 million in “suspect funds” into the United States from offshore shell companies.
At least $1.7 million of that money was bribes paid by German technology company Siemens AG, according to Senate investigators. Siemens pleaded guilty to bribery charges in 2008 and agreed to pay a $1.6 billion fine.
Atiku has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Neither he nor his wife face criminal charges in the United States.
“These issues have been addressed several times in the past and we do not wish to comment further on them,” a spokesman for Atiku said when asked about the corruption allegations.

WHIRLWIND VISIT

Atiku’s whirlwind visit to Washington last month was put together with the help of two U.S. lobbying firms.
Holland & Knight was hired by Atiku personally in December to help him secure a visa, in part by enlisting members of Congress to request one on his behalf, according to a lobbyist for the firm. It has been paid $80,000 so far.
Ballard Partners was hired by Atiku’s political party at a rate of $90,000 per month in September, before Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate, according to U.S. disclosure filings.
The firm’s lobbyists worked to set up a meeting with Nagy, arguing it would show that the United States wanted to encourage free and fair elections in a country where graft is endemic.
“We are not asking the administration or anyone to take sides, but to merely demand the same level of freeness and fairness,” Ballard lobbyist Jamie Rubin told Reuters.
Aside from Nagy, Atiku met with business leaders at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and at least two Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives who specialize in foreign affairs, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey.
Neither requested a visa waiver for Atiku, spokespeople for the two congressmen said.
Atiku stayed at the Trump International Hotel, owned by the president, and met with several hundred Nigerian expatriates there, according to two people who attended the gathering.
The luxury hotel is the subject of several lawsuits that allege Trump is violating an anti-corruption clause in the U.S. Constitution that limits the president’s ability to accept gifts from foreign governments.
Atiku’s supporters say they chose the hotel because they were able to book rooms at a discounted rate with only a few days’ notice.
“I think it was because of the availability of the space,” said Uche Udemadu, an official with the U.S. chapter of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria.
A spokeswoman for the hotel declined to comment.

2023: CUPP Petition EU, UK, US over Alleged Plot to Deactivate BVAS

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) Friday went to the UK High Commission, US Embassy as well as EU Embassy over its allegations of compromise of the voters register and also petition against the plot to sack the Chairman of INEC and deactivate the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) server.
The association led by its spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, wants sanctions imposed on the alleged conspirators with visa ban, assets freeze and arrest where possible.
The parties called on all the foreign missions to keep a closer eye on Nigeria’s transition process, saying that the alleged plot to destabilize INEC can throw Nigeria into crisis.
Addressing newsmen after the visits, Ugochinyere, Chief Peter Ameh of Labour Party, Kenneth Udeze of Action Alliance Party, Hon. Geff Ojinika of Labour Party, and Kabiru Yusuf of Arewa Consultative group said this move was aimed at engendering peaceful, acceptable, credible, free and fair election and also to promote national security while promoting the principles of participatory democracy and rule of law.
He expressed optimism that the foreign missions can wield enough pressure on the government to do the right thing and allow INEC to independently conduct the elections.
In another development, CUPP has restated its position on the crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over continued calls for the removal of the party’s National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu.
CUPP said it was set to meet with the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike to present a working road path to final resolution of the crisis.
CUPP Spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere in a statement on Friday, insisted that Ayu’s removal was not negotiable, saying that it will help restore the integrity of the PDP and unite the party.
Ugochinyere who is also PDP candidate for Ideato North and South Federal Constituency, opined that with Ayu’s removal it will prove that PDP had zero tolerance to corruption and ready to make any sacrifice no matter how challenging for the benefit of the country.
He claimed that candidates of PDP in the South were facing marginalisation and integrity issues over the continued stay of Ayu in office.
According to him, for PDP to win presidential election in 2023, Ayu must resign from his position.
Ugochinyere said, “the corruption and bribery allegation against Ayu have presented a huge credibility problem for PDP, the removal of Ayu will offer a new confidence in rebuilding the party. I have times without number appealed to Ayu and the party’s national secretary, Anyanwu not to drag the image of the Party to the mud and cried at the briefing that PDP is facing a marketing challenges with Ayu still in office.

Get your pen and paper and take note of the following:

1. Label Him an Ethnic Presidential Candidate...

This strategy will work magic. Ignore all the revolutionary ideas Peter Obi is sharing. Ignore the fact that Peter Obi has denounced every form of Tribalism or ethnicity. Capitalize on the fact that majority of his supporters are from the South East - the wrong region for a Saviour to come from. Like the people of old, ask in your minds "can anything good come out of Nazareth?". Don't ask this publicly. The public must think that your hatred for Peter Obi is because his South East fan base are tribalists even when you know deep down that the entire country is immersed in deep tribal hate with the exemption of a few illuminated minds which Peter Obi is one. To win the debate about Peter Obi's ethnic presidential candidacy, you must focus on the social media fan base and not the Candidate himself. Do everything possible to link Peter Obi's candidacy to IPOB. Call his supporters rebranded members of IPOB. Ignore the fact that IPOB is against the elections while supporters of Peter Obi are seeking for a better Nigeria where everyone will have equal opportunities despite tribe or religion. Your job is to demarket Peter Obi - even if it means selling what your conscience judges as unfair. After all, you and I know that the other two candidates are empty of ideas but full of selfish ambitions yet we need to market them to Nigerians as the Stamped candidates who come from the Right region and belong to the right parties. They have the right structure - tribally, religiously and politically. Anyone outside the old two candidates must be de-marketed even if they are the Saviour of country.

2. Call Peter Obi a Liar...

Peter Obi's biggest weapon is his mastery of facts and figures. He knows that almost half the population of Nigeria live below poverty lines. Argue this fact even if your own mother and father are part of the poverty statistics. Ignore the reality of poverty in your immediate family and be consumed by your loyalty to your wealthy political gods. After all, you are part of the 50 million youths who will be fed Agbado, cassava and corn in the forth coming economic transformation under Jaga-Jaga's administration. Fight Charles Awuzie and others who are working to take away your favorite Agbado and Cassava. After all, what is a man without a dangling cassava between his legs? The forthcoming Jaga-jaga administration is a cassava regime - expect more sisters to hit the red light district in search of oiled cassava. Fight anyone who wants to reverse this prophecy - including Peter Obi. Call him a liar. Ignore the reality of his statistical information in your family. This is politics. Anyone without structure is a liar.

3. Insist That A Vote For Peter Obi is A Waste of Vote...

Nigerians can waste money on Kayamata, waste time on betting, waste their savings on Chinmark but Nigerians hate to waste their vote on the one who will rescue them. Nigerians will rather cast their vote for oppressors who are seen as tough, Bullion vanned, and enjoys Federal government's backing. Anyone outside this Cabal is a waste of vote. Reduce the Peter Obi movement to a mere social media trend. Ignore the revolutionary PVC registration in public while fearing it in the secret chambers of your minds. Your job is to belittle Peter Obi. This isn't an easy job since Peter Obi is daily all over your face, newsfeed and screens. 24 hours ago, Rhino claimed that he bought his house in USA before joining the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Well, the truth is that RHINO HAS NEVER BOUGHT A HOUSE IN THE USA….

The said house was bought by his ex-wife, Tuokpe Onuwaje in 2009. The house, 1*41 ******* street, Brentwood, California belongs is Tuokpe Onuwaje’s family home.
Rhino was a house husband in the house – Rhino had no job, no career but the well established Onuwaje’s family in the USA welcomed him and accomodated him.
Rhino was doing “pastor pastor” so the Onuwaje family trusted him and started exposing him to their network.

For your information, the Onuwaje family is well established in California. The matriarch of the Onuwajes , 81 year old Mama Ayo Onuwaje is still living at the Brentwood home which Rhino claims he bought.

Rhino was broke and broken when Tuokpe Onuwaje picked him up. How did he reward Tuokpe? I’ll get to that.

Through Tuokpe’s elder brother, Godwin Onuwaje (May his soul rest in peace), an Igbo man, Barr. Emeka Maduewesi picked interest in Rhino. This connection would later link Rhino to late Oronto Douglas who was then SSA on Strategy to then President Goodluck Jonathan.

In 2010, Rhino quickly conjured a skit tittled “Emeka” to advocate for a better Nigerian branding. This was probably done to convince or fool Emeka Maduewesi into introducing him to the upper echelon.

Well, Rhino always has a way of using people – especially Igbos. He would later interview Oronto Douglas. That was his entry point into the Goodluck Jonathan administration. It was Oronto Douglas that first asked him to run errands for him and then proceeded to get him on Presidency’s payroll.
Rhino jumped on the offer – a proof that he was unemployed in the USA and found the opportunity of earning N1 m per month ($2000) a big financial breakthrough. Rhino’s job was to manage the Facebook and Twitter account of Mr. Jonathan. Slowly, he would label himself Spokesman of the President – a subtle way to exaggerate his role in the presidency.

With his new found job, Rhino started displaying his real character. He quickly forgot the years Tuokpe worked her a** off to feed, clothe and shelter him. He has become a big fish in Abuja. He would later be accused of making sexual advances at friends of Tuokpe – yes, Natasha Akpoti is Tuokpe close friend. For your information, Natasha Akpoti deleted her accusations to respect her friendship with Tuokpe and not because Rhino threatened lawsuit. Natasha was also planning to get married at the time she made the accusation and didn’t want to drag the name of her royal husband to be into the mud with a shameless Rhino. Now you know why the post was deleted. But again, Rhino took credit for something Tuokpe’s influence accomplished – this is what he has done over the years, taking credit for what Tuokpe achieved including claiming ownership of their Brentwood home.
At this point, I make bold to challenge Rhino to show evidence that he owns the Brentwood California home. In fact, let Rhino show evidence of ownership of any asset anywhere in the world.
The first time Rhino ever got a job in his life was when Oronto Douglas sneaked him into Jonathan’s administration. Unfortunately, this season revealed his true self to his ex-wife who realised that her “pastor pastor” House husband had an alleged double identity, alleged double sexuality, and confirmed double tongue. She would later dump him to focus on raising her kids who were abandoned by their father.
It will shock you to know that Rhino never invested a cent from his time in the job…. Upon leaving office, Rhino returned to the USA only to discover that he was now homeless.
That was when he started his Rhino- Around the World. He started a nomadic homeless life – using his new found fame to get free swimming invitations to several rivers in the world. Someone said that Rhino lives off women and that his travelling is funded by “rivers” he is swimming around the world.

As a Nigerian with considerable interest in public affairs, the Grand Ballroom of New York City’s Hilton Midtown Hotel, the venue of “Afro-Economics & Government Policy: A Conversation with Governor Peter Obi,” was my destination last Sunday.

The engagement followed others in the United States, some of which had been mismanaged by local organisers who chose to charge a gate fee. Not New York, which was free to every registered attendee, thanks to the Columbia University’s Africa Business Club and Black Law Students Association.

The Hilton Grand Ballroom is a cavernous facility capable of accommodating 3,000 persons. For a city with nearly 700 hotels pre-COVID, Hilton bills the facility as the city’s largest ballroom. At the height of the event, it was about two-thirds full.

On arrival, I was exactly half an hour ahead of schedule. I was therefore even more impressed to find over 100 other Nigerians ahead of me at the door, some of them from faraway states.

On the evidence of the New York event, I report that Labour Party presidential candidate Obi is not a myth or a hoax, contrary to what some snake-oil merchants suggest.

He is no product merely of social media, or merely an Igbo man seeking an Igbo presidency. The Nigerians I saw, heard, and interacted with were from various parts of Nigeria.

Who is Obi? He may be a Nigerian who wants the leadership of Nigeria to alter her story, history and trajectory, but he is the candidate of time and chance.

That makes him a formidable candidate, and on the evidence of last Sunday, I now fully understand those videos of widespread excitement each time he is identified in public, which offend the Nigeria political establishment (structure, if you like).

I have previously written in this column that Peter Obi, the metaphor, is the rephrasing of the question for the APC and PDP conglomerate.

Most Nigerians admit: Nigeria is a pathetic failure. Obi’s advocacy is a commonsense proposal to re-engineer the country beginning from its leadership recruitment.


The background here is no mystery: Nigeria is at its lowest ebb of morale and coherence since her independence in October 1960. Since then, she has suffered relentlessly at the hands of ruthless politicians and a mostly-rotten military machine which dresses up some of its most brutal, greedy and pretentious in civilian attire and dumps them on the nation.

The danger is that Nigeria is now rotting at a precipitous pace, the nation hurtling towards disintegration with nothing working for most people except those who wield power, their cronies and their families. What this means is what the rest of the world can see: a nation of tremendous potential that is running out of time.

It is the popular outrage against this mess that is fueling Mr Obi and his message: to reset Nigeria.
At The Conversation, he took questions from a panel of two, and then from a pile that had been written by the audience at the beginning of the programme. Throughout, it is significant that not once did he read from a prepared text. He did not have an army of aides whispering clarifications of questions or explaining elementary concepts. He avoided no questions.

Was I satisfied with every answer he provided? No. There were a couple in which I felt he was under-prepared.But was I satisfied with him? Absolutely. It was the first time since 1983 when, as a young journalist, I joined a panel to interview the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, that I encountered a Nigerian politician at a very high level who spoke with confidence, control, and conviction. He was on the floor for a couple of hours, pausing only to drink water. He did not go to the bathroom or pause for a doctor to monitor his vitals.

You could tell not simply that Obi is literate, but that he is educated and that should you seek his certificates, he will give them. You could tell that he is not intimidated by books or facts, and that should he see a library, he would walk in not as a tourist but as a reader.

You could tell not simply that he is educated, but that he wants to extend that privilege to Nigerians in their own country. He explained his philosophy, including why it is outrageous that in a country in which there is supposedly a government, the ASUU strike has been permitted to keep students at home for over half of 2022.

He addressed the correlation between education and poverty, advocating the first as the antidote to the second. He pointed out how, by merely implementing the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, such nations as India and China lowered their poverty rates.

Who should be the next Nigerian leader? He warned that the forthcoming election “will be about character we can trust, competence, capacity, commitment to do the right thing,” dismissing the absurdity about the presidency being conceivably someone’s “turn.” The election, he affirmed, is a political contest and “not a chieftaincy title,” and “will not be about connection.”

On corruption, Mr Obi drew attention to the importance of leadership by example. “Corruption kills entrepreneurship, professionalism, and hard work,” he said, stressing that it must be fought through the personal example of the leader, his family and those around them.


He called on Nigerians not to vote based on sentiments of religion or ethnicity because the same challenges confront Nigerians everywhere. “Don’t vote for me because I am from the South-East,” he said. “If you go to the North, it is not safer than the South. It will not be about religion (either); Muslims don’t buy bread cheaper than the Christians.”

Members of the PDP and APC have often dismissed Obi’s popularity on the grounds that his party lacks a structure. Responding, Mr Obi said, “The structure they talk about is the structure of criminality and that is what I’m coming to dismantle.”

Predictably, the crowd roared because everyone knows how APC and the PDP have rigged their way into those offices over the years with arrogance, using money, the security agencies, thugs, and even the electoral commission.

What is Obi, then? If you think of him merely as a contestant for public office, you miss the point. Obi is a conversation, a confession, and an opportunity to rethink. He is the epochal conversation Nigeria has not had with itself since the rails fell off following the civil war in 1970. He is a confession that this conversation—demanded far more by the #EndSARS generation than the Grand Ballroom demographic—is not optional.

I recommend this template,as a non-campaign engagement at home or abroad to hear and be heard. Office-seekers who are comfortable with ideas, or whose power is not in buying support with money or aides who love unearned riches more than they do their families, should try it.
Let us talk about what constitutes hope for Nigeria. Let us hear your ideas. That is what Peter Obi is doing. And he is not renting his crowd.
