Politics / Amazing Insight Into The BH Insurgency: Not To Be Missed By by Emfash(m): 6:15am On Nov 02, 2014
It is no longer news that Nigeria is finding it very tasking to tackle the BH insurgency, this is reflected in the inability to rescue the Chibok girls up till now and the various unsuccessful attempts at brokering a ceasefire with the sect, the recent phantom ceasefire is also very disturbing. @contactsalkida gives an amazing insight into the imbroglio. Not to be missed

Secret_Dreams: Chinko na chinko, abi how will two different brands of phones operate with the same OS and have a high price difference ? There must definitely be something about the one with the lower price. Think about that.
You got it all wrong: it is called brand equity(The premium Apple or Samsung enjoy on their brands' popularity). Once Tecno attain appreciable user base trust me they won't be very cheap. On the other hand they are very smart because they are targeting the low end segment that contribute over 70 percent of the phone usage in Nigeria. Ask the 'I pass my Neighbor' generator manufacturers . For me my Tecno Phantom A does it for me and I've never been ashamed to flaunt it!!!!!!

I think Suarez is worth even more than 40 Million, the problem is Wenger cant be trusted, I agree he might be using the deal as a smokescreen, but if it backfires and we end up with nothing then it may be time to castrate Wenger. I wouldn't even mind a Soldado at 25M and using the balance+ few quid to tie down deals for a defensive midfielder and a solid center half

Just watched clips of Suarez and his skills....worth every penny of 40Million GBP irrespective off his character. Cantona and Roy Keane were also crazy in their time. With Suarez, a solid center back (Ashely Wlliams), a back up keeper (Caesar) and a visionary holding midfielder (Fellaini) we can dream big this season. But, who am I to comment. According to few deluded fans, only Arsene 'knows'

It's highly unlikely Liverpool will sell Suarez to us ( a direct competition) unless Brendan Rodgers is stupidly naive like Wenger last summer (RVP comes to mind) which I doubt, his most likely destination is RM. Come to think of it, we might actually lose out on both strikers with Wengidis' pranks

Serie A - Napoli 'agree £32m fee for Higuain'

Napoli have agreed a fee of €37m (£32m) with Real Madrid for striker Gonzalo Higuain according to reports in Italy but the deal is still far from done.
By Sean Fay | Eurosport

According to Sky Italia, the deal is complicated by Napoli's insistence that they get full image rights to the player – Higuain holds 50 per cent of his image rights at Real which is worth about two million euros a year to him via a sponsorship deal with Nike.

The report claims that Napoli would be willing to pay Higuain €115,000-a-week to try and tempt him to release his image rights.

Higuain has been heavily linked with Arsenal this summer but their interest has cooled as Real's valuation has increased.

The Serie A club have money to spend after agreeing the sale of Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani to Paris St Germain for a reported fee of 64 million euros (£55m) and are looking to strengthen their squad for their domestic and Champions League campaigns.

Napoli last week agreed to sign versatile Spanish forward Jose Callejon from Real having already secured the services of Belgium winger Dries Mertens.

Spain defender Raul Albiol has also signed a four-year contract after again joining from Real while Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has agreed a season-long loan and will join in the next few days.

The new signing have joined up with Spaniard Rafa Benitez, who was appointed Napoli coach at the end of May.

WENGAZIDIS are never to be trusted......so Higuain is finally heading to Italy, that's how all the stellar signings go out of reach till the window nearly slams shut in our face! How much is 32M compared to the 40M Liverpool is asking for Suarez, I keep reminding guys saying it's early days that Wenger isn't keen on spending any cash but for the pressure from some of the sane board members and loyal fans. Well early days are gradually turning to early hours.........Fingers crossed.

All the potential big 4 contenders are already busy in the market, all we hear from our AkaGum Managers is: We will spend on Top quality.......I just hope history won't repeat itself when we will be searching for top quality in a mediocre French club or Armenia while others are making bullish bargains

Arsenal Football Club has announced that Sir Chips Keswick has been appointed chairman.
It follows the decision by Peter Hill-Wood to stand down from the board for health reasons. Mr Hill-Wood, who has been Arsenal chairman since 1982, is recovering after a heart attack last year.Full story - http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/sir-chips-keswick-appointed-chairman. Let's hope this is the chairman that weilds the big axe on Wenger if he messes up with the fans one last time, especially if Mr Kenswick doesn't want to end up like his predecessor..Some of our games are enough to give one heart attack!

Business / Nigeria's GDP Inaccurate? by Emfash(m): 9:15am On Feb 01, 2013
This article from The Economist cuts a very disturbing treng of the GEJ administration and poor statistics. All policy experts in his government need to be further scrutinized to put an end to this global embarrasment. IN 2013 Nigeria’s GDP could increase by 40%, which would be impressive even by Africa’s recent bouncy growth standards. The rise will come not from a surge in economic activity but because the country is rejigging the way it calculates its accounts. At the moment, Nigeria’s GDP estimate, like many statistics in Africa, is wildly inaccurate. But the new figures may owe as much to political calculation as to hard-nosed statisticians. Governments in countries such as Nigeria and Ghana that want to make a bigger splash are likely to puff up their GDP, whereas those in countries such as Malawi that want to keep aid money flowing in from the West tend to keep it as low as possible.

To work out real GDP, government statisticians use the prices of goods and services from a “base year” as a reference. That lets them adjust for the effect of inflation in subsequent years. But as relative prices change, those calculations become less accurate. In a study of 47 African countries by Morten Jerven, an economic historian, only ten used base years less than a decade old. Nigeria’s real GDP is based on 1990 prices. It plans to update them to ones from 2008. Ghana did the same in 2010, revising its base year from 1996 to 2006. Its GDP shot up by 60%, propelling it overnight from being a poor to middle-income country, defined by the IMF as having a GDP per person of at least $1,026 a year.

Twenty years ago the GDPs of most African countries were underestimated—and were dismally low. Few governments minded. But the likes of Nigeria now want to tell tales of progress, not poverty. It wants to secure its status as Africa’s superpower. Its GDP is growing twice as fast as that of South Africa, the continent’s largest economy. “Rebasing” could see its economy swell from $273 billion to $382, just behind South Africa at $420 billion. If it were decided that an African country should get a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, the case for Nigeria, the continent’s most populous country, with a population of 150m, would be strengthened if it were to outpace South Africa economically. It could also bid for membership of the BRICS, a club of beefily emerging countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and, arguably, South Africa).

Poor countries, however, want to keep the aid coming in. Take Malawi. Aid accounts for around a third of its budget. In 2005 its government brought in fertiliser subsidies. It reported a maize crop of 3.4m tonnes in 2006-7, up from 2.6m tonnes the year before. The aid lobby said this justified the subsidies and the budget support which enables them to be paid for.

But figures released in 2010, disputed by Malawi’s ministry of agriculture, suggest that the harvest was only 2.1m tonnes. If maize production had risen as much as claimed, Malawians should have have had a surplus of maize and prices should have dropped. That did not happen, says Mr Jerven. But the scheme’s vaunted success encouraged donors to keep coughing up.
