The Benue State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been thrown into great grief and mourning following the tragic loss of over 30 party faithful in a road accident earlier this morning in the Zone Senatorial District of the state.



The party faithful were travelling to the venue of the flag-off of the Senatorial Campaign of candidate of the party in the Benue-South Senatorial District, Comrade Patrick Abba Moro, which was slated to hold in Agatu today.


The event has hereby been postponed in honour of the dead and a new date will be scheduled for it soon.

Governor Samuel Ortom has urged the people of the state to remain calm in the face of what he described as obvious provocation by Fulani herdsmen even as he called for the arrest of some of their leaders.



He made the appeals while addressing journalists at the old Banquet Hall of the Benue Peoples House, today, on the protest by youths who blocked some major roads in Makurdi, the state capital as a reaction to killings by herders in the State.


The Governor called for the arrest of the leaders of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore who threatened to invade the state last year as those responsible for the current killings in the state.


But he explained that actions carried out in anger against the killings were bound to complicate the situation adding that the people must avoid taking the law into their own hands as two wrongs cannot make a right.


Governor Ortom said he appreciated the pains which the people of the state were passing through especially families of the victims, saying that he has informed the President about the development and was awaiting a positive reaponse.


He stated that he and members of the State Security Council visited some flashpoints in Guma and Logo Local Government Areas yesterday and thereafter directed the deployment of security operatives to the places.
The Governor reiterated that there was no going back on the implementation of the anti-open grazing law which he said was the permanent solution to the herders, farmers incessant clashes with attendant destruction of lives and property.


He called on the Federal Government to rise up to its responsibility to protect the lives and property of Benue indigenes in order to give them a sense of belonging.


The Governor insisted that the leadership of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore must be arrested for making inciting statements concerning the open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law and for carrying out their threats.


Governor Ortom also received 23 indigenes of the state who graduated as cardet inspectors from the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja, Lagos.


He commended them for exhibiting high sense of discipline to achieve such a feat, and urged them to strive to add value to the Force and aim to get to the topmost position.

“Blame it on Experience” basketball team of Otukpo have been dethroned as Mark d’Ball basketball champions.
They lost the crown after losing 61-77 to Benue Braves in the final of the competition’s 2017 edition which took place at Mark d’Ball’s newly constructed basketball arena in Otukpo, Benue.


Benue Braves reached the final after defeating Zuba Hornets of Suleja 68-57, while Experience defeated compatriots APA Flames 66-55 for the final encounter.
It was a sweet revenge for the Brave Boys who were beaten in the final of the same competition by “Blame it on Experience” two years ago.

Team Experience made up of veterans in basketball, won the first quarter of the game 22-16 but surrendered to the superior firepower of the Benue team.
The Benue team took over the play winning 41-36 and 59-56 in the second and third quarters before sealing victory 77-61 in the fourth quarter.

The defeat denied Experience basketball team the opportunity of winning their sixth title in the competition.
Captain of Experience, Igoche Mark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) applauded the performance of the winning team, but blamed poor officiating for his team’s loss.

“The match officials made too many wrong calls that affected my team; there should be a balance of officiating in every game for teams to know their capability because we are equal in the court.
“Nevertheless, I am happy with the game and its outcome, even though we didn’t win.

“I keep telling other teams that it’s a shame that my team takes the title every year we come here despite my teammates not playing active basketball.

“The Benue Braves players are younger than us. So, I give it to them,” Mark said.
Benue Braves point guard, Michael Ikima, told NAN that it was an honour winning the competition.
He said that his mum inspired him to winning the title.

“It has always been my dream to lift the Mark d’Ball trophy and we have won it despite the challenges we faced.
“Our opponents have the best coaches, former NBA and national team players in their squad but my teammates were able to subdue them; honestly I feel great.
“My mum inspired me because I have not won any major title to show that I am a good basketball player; so, I will be glad to tell her now that I won this title.

“I have won silver and bronze medals in this tournament but seeing my mother’s face while I was playing the final game, made the difference,” Ikima said.
Ikima, a Nigerian Basketball Division One league player expressed the hope that his team would retain the title next season.
NAN reports that Customs basketball team from Abuja, won the female title after defeating Benue Providence 56-47 in the female category.

Benue Braves were handed the competition’s trophy with a cash prize of N300,000, while Blame it on Experience got N200,000.

Zuba Hornets of Suleja and Bayelsa Patriots pocketed N100,000 each for winning the bronze medals in the male and female categories respectively.
10 male and six female basketball teams participated in the competition which started on Dec. 26.

Snow, ice and winds are causing disruption to air and road travel in parts of the UK.
Passengers at Glasgow airport faced delays after heavy snow caused flights to be temporarily suspended.

The world’s largest amphibious aircraft, the China-made AG600, made its maiden flight and comes as the latest milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise its military.

State television showed live images of the AG600 lifting off from Zhuhai airport in the southern province of Guangdong, which sits on the South China Sea coast.

How does Bitcoin differs from cash?
The currency is completely digital and has multiple safeguards to prevent hacking and theft. One of the main allures of the new form of currency, however, is the fact that it doesn't rely on a third-party banking or other financial institution. Bitcoin is decentralized, and rather than be secured by people or trust, it is secured by math, specifically strong cryptography – or techniques for secure communication – hence then name cryptocurrency.


Cryptocurrencies use a complex cryptographic approach to tracking and exchanging digital currency, one that builds on a digital ledger called a "blockchain." More simply, a blockchain or "digital ledger" is a way for many people to have one common record of all transactions. It would be similar to if everyone had a digitally connected notebook. Each time someone wrote in it, recording the purchase or sale of an item, the words appeared in yours and everyone else's notebook. In fact, it's estimated that the final Bitcoin will be mined in the year 2140. It's because of these properties that Bitcoin has been repeatedly called "digital gold."


What are other forms of cryptocurrency?
Others saw the power in having a digital currency that was decentralized, requiring no trust in a third-party financial system. This led to the creation of other forms of cryptocurrency, sometimes called altcoin (i.e., alternative coins to Bitcoin). These various forms of cryptocurrencies, like Litecoin and Ether, use slightly different cryptographic algorithms and/or have other technical differences from each other. One, NEO, a Chinese-based cryptocurrency, supports up to 10,000 transactions per second, compared to Ethereum, currently the most heavily traded cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin, which only supports about 15 transactions per second. This becomes important as more consumers begin to use cryptocurrency. Having more transactions per second allow more people to use the cryptocurrency, instead of just a few.


This doesn't mean that one cryptocurrency will eventually beat out the rest. Each one offers something slightly different with regards to safety, privacy and efficiency. In fact, given the relative ease of exchange between various cryptocurrencies, it's possible that multiple cryptocurrencies remain once the market settles. The attention of Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has been drawn to pictures of wheelbarrows bearing his name and posted on social media suggesting that he plans to empower youths of the state with the carts.

We wish to make it clear that the consent of the Governor was not sought and he did not give approval for anyone to inscribe his name on the said wheelbarrows.

Governor Ortom is aware that the wheelbarrows in possession of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA were recently donated to the state by the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, NCFRMI, for victims of crisis in parts of the state so he couldn't have claimed credit for the gesture.

The Ortom administration has numerous laudable empowerment schemes for youths of Benue but the donation of wheelbarrows to the youths is not one of such schemes.

Consequently, the Governor has directed Secretary to the State Government to issue a query to the Executive Secretary of SEMA to explain why the said action was taken by his office.

Governor Ortom has also directed the agency to immediately remove the inscription from all the affected wheelbarrows.
