Onnoghen’s Suspension: Where Buhari Got It Wrong – Presidential Candidate

The Presidental candidate of the Peoples Trust Party (PTP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, says he subscribes to President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption stance but urges him to follow due process.

Hashim said this when he was reacting to the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, and the implications on the 2019 General Election.
Advertise With Us

Olawepo regards the situation as a sad moment in the country and a setback for Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“When going for a National Election such as this, you must define your priorities, the priority for now is people want to see how this decision impact on the transition process,” Olawepo said during Kakaaki, a morning show on Africa Independent Television (AIT).

He further expressed worry over this development because the CJN, whose role is to adjudicate pre-election and post-election issues such as parties complaints on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines even before the election, now has other matters to attend to.

Hashim raised many questions on the “illegal” suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

Concise News reports that President Buhari had on Friday, 25 January 2019, suspended Onnoghen based on the allegation that he violated the code of conduct for public officers by not declaring his assets as required by law.

The federal government is prosecuting Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), which recommended the suspension of the senior judicial officer.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad was sworn in on Friday as acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

But the President’s action has since become a subject of controversy, with the Nigerian Senate on Monday asking the Supreme Court to reverse the suspension of Onnoghen, and the Presidency sending a petition to the NJC over corruption allegations against the suspended CJN.

Politics / Kwara Must Change Online Senatorial Polls To End Today by mrrights: 1:09pm On Jan 30, 2019
Kwara Must Change Online Senatorial Polls To End Today

Leading Pro-Democracy group in Kwara State, Kwara Must Change (KMC) has announced that its 3 online senatorial polls ahead of the 2019 general election shall end today and it urges more people to participate in the poll before it is concluded.

The 3 senatorial polls are for Kwara Central Senatorial district between People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Bukola Saraki and All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe, Kwara South senatorial district between APC candidate, Arc Lola Ashiru and PDP's Senator Rafiu Ibrahim and Kwara North senatorial district between APC candidate, Sadiq Umar and PDP Zakari Muhammed.

In a statement released on Wednesday, signed by its President Abdulrazaq Hamzat, Kwara Must Change stated that it believes that the result of the 6 days poll would indicate, to a great extent, the direction of the 2019 election in Kwara State.

The online poll currently running on Kwara Must Change (KMC) Facebook group and page respectively was created 6 days ago and it has been running ever since.

Experts have argued that, accurate predictions of elections can be critically important for business and social purposes. Households and businesses may base important economic decisions on the likely policies of a future government, if polls indicate a possibility of change.

Reliable polls would also help citizens make better informed plans ahead of time, rather than reacting chaotically to an unforeseen turn of events.

Analysts maintained that, although election polls attract a great deal of attention for their ability to predict the outcome of elections, their most important function is to help journalists and citizens understand the meaning of the campaign and the election.

Polls help to explain, among other things, what issues are important, how candidate qualities may affect voters’ decisions, and how much support there is for particular policy changes.

Kwara Must Change (KMC) therefore calls on all members of the public to carefully follow the poll on its facebook platforms and also participate.

Politics / Onnoghen: Olawepo Hashim Urges Abubakar-led Peace Committee To Break Logjam by mrrights: 10:48am On Jan 29, 2019
Onnoghen: PT’s Olawepo-Hashim Urges Abubakar-Led Peace Committee, NJC To Break Logjam Over CJN’s Suspension

ABUJA (Sundiata Post) – Presidential candidate of People’s Trust (PT) in the February 16 election, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called on the General Abdulsalami Abubakar-led National Peace Committee and the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) to intervene and amicably resolve the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen, in order to avert political and constitutional crises.

Olawepo-Hashim made the call against the backdrop of the combative and intransigent position taken by President Muhammadu Buhari who last Friday acted on a black market ex-parte order procured at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) to suspend Onnoghen and swear in his stead Justice Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.

He said in an interview on Monday in Abuja that all presidential candidates, including President Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, were made to sign a peace, which among others, was to ensure peace before and after the election.

Olawepo-Hashim, however, lamented that the suspension of the CJN, barely three weeks to the 2019 general election and the hasty manner in which the Acting CJN, Justice Tanko Mohammed, swore in judges of election tribunals, “have compromised the credibility of the electoral process and are thus capable of undermining peace and stability during and after the election.”

He said now was the time for the Abubakar Committee, which comprises eminent Nigerians, to swing into action and find a peaceful solution to imminent political and constitutional crises.

While insisting that the suspension of Onnoghen negated the laws of Nigeria and therefore an indication that the country had fallen into dictatorship, Olaepo-Hashim urged the Acting CJN to step aside since his appointment had not followed due process.

According to him, “Such an appointment must be done on the recommendation of the Nigeria Judicial Commission (NJC), which was not the case in the appointment of Justice Tanko.”

He said President Buhari had 4 years to fight corruption but queried the sudden onslaught on Onnoghen, few weeks to the general election.

Olawepo-Hashim therefore called on the Acting CJN to step aside and allow a process where the next CJN in line would be recommended by the NJC.

He declared: “I am not particularly interested in individuals but how to preserve the integrity of institutions of state such as the Judiciary.

“The weighty allegations against Justice Onnoghen should still be investigated by the NJC and it should be up to the NJC to know what to do with him in accordance with the constitution the Federal Republic of Nigeria and other judicial regulations.”

Onnoghen: Buhari leading Nigeria into chaos —Olawepo-Hashim

The presidential candidate of the People’s Trust, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, said it has become clear that President Muhammadu Buhari is leading the country into chaos with his decision on the erstwhile CJN Walter Onnoghen.

Olawepo-Hashim said this in an interview with journalists on Friday.

He called on Buhari to immediately resign his position or risk being removed from office.

He also called for international sanctions against all officials of the present administration.

The presidential hopeful said, “This is very sad. It is condemnable and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy.

“It is an ominous return to dictatorship and a complete violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“I call on members of the international community to immediately impose sanctions on the members of the executive branch at the Federal Government.

“These sanctions should include revocation of existing travel visas for them and their families and business associates, including targeted asset seizures.

“I call on the President himself to step down and resign because he is leading Nigeria into chaos and anarchy.

“We fought so hard to install democracy and we paid dearly for it. We will not allow any group of people, no matter how powerful they think they have become, to take democracy down.

“This is not about politics; it is about democracy, which we fought so hard to put in place in Nigeria.

“If he refuses to resign, the National Assembly should commence his impeachment immediately.”

Buhari, Atiku’s Absence At Debate Contempt Of Nigerians ― Olawepo-Hashim

Challenges APC, PDP to debate, praises Obby, Durotoye and Moghalu for good performance

Presidential candidate of the People’s Trust (PT), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Sunday said that the failure of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) to appear at a presidential debate in Abuja on Saturday amounted to contempt of the electorate.

Olawepo-Hashim, who also challenged the two parties to a fresh debate said that the NEDG.BON must immediately set up a new debate featuring his party and the two big parties.

He said: “Nigerian electorate deserve to scrutinise the candidates and programmes of the two behemoths that have come to be known as the two evils of Nigerian politics. Their absence under whatever excuse(s) shows their contempt for the electorate.”

Olawepo-Hashim, whose party is also known as the Third Force, and who had earlier protested his exclusion from the debate said that he was volunteering to enter into a debate with the APC and PDP candidates at any location of their choice.

He also praised the candidates of the three candidates who appeared at the debate, declaring that they gave good accounts of themselves.

According to Mr Hashim, “Nigerian electorate deserve to scrutinise the candidates and programmes of the two behemoths that have come to be known as the “two evils of Nigerian politics. Their absence under whatever excuse(s) shows their contempt for the electorate.

The PT presidential candidate, however, congratulated the candidates of the ACPN, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili; YPP, Mr Kinsley Moghalu and ANN, Mr Fela Durotoye for “their brilliant performance at the debate.”

“The three candidates advertised to the world, a teaser of what stuff new generation of political leaders are made of,” he said.

Mr Olawepo-Hashim called on the NEDG/BON to immediately organise another debate to include People’s Trust, the biggest of the newly registered political parties that had been unfairly excluded.

“We have complained about this in the past, a new debate will be a good way to cure the debate platform of that error. There is no problem in making a mistake by excluding us, but it will be dishonourable not to seize a good opportunity to correct your error.”

The PT presidential candidate further called on the organisers to also include promising candidates like Omoyele Sowore and others who may be interested in the next round of the debate.

According to him, it is fundamental not to allow the APC and PDP escape public scrutiny which a debate symbolises.

Olawepo-Hashim added that it will not even matter if the APC is represented at the proposed debate by another person other than the President Buhari, whom he said may be afraid of public scrutiny due to his obvious display of lack of presence of mind in recent public outings.

“We are persuaded now that we can excuse Mr Buhari; all we want is to scrutinise APC’s record at a proper presidential debate. Nigerians have a right to that debate,” Olawepo-Hashim said.

The 3rd Force best bet
By Abdulrazaq O Hamzat

I have great respect for all 3rd Force presidential candidates and i believe they deserve more respect than they are getting.

Nobody thought Barack Obama could be US president until he became US president. Many of those who mocked him for aspiring in the first place eventually became his most ardent supporters. This is how life works.

So, if you are supporting a 3rd Force candidate, be proud of yourself because not many people often get the message in early stage, you are one of the special few.

Believe me, when I see people supporting any 3rd Force candidate with so much vigour and commitment, i admire those individuals greatly.

It's not easy to break away from the bandwagon effect. Many often wish they can be like you, but lack the courage to.

Ademola H Adigun has stated that he his rooting for Madam Oby Ezekwesili even when he knew she wouldn't win. That is a principled stance based on conviction.
Hon Mustapha Mudasir Ayanfe is rooting for Kingsley Moghalu, though he asserted that he knew he also would not win. That is also principled.

For Inibehe Effiong it's Omoyele Sowore or nothing. For him, Sowore has the conviction that he would win, but would he?

Everybody knows that i am for Gbenga Olawepo Hashim and i strongly believe that he's the best candidate in this election, not only in terms of ideas and capacity, but also in planning and projection.

If you are truly looking for a 3rd Force candidate capable of winning this election, do not ignore Hashim, who has gathered so many important endorsements, ranging from the middle belt forums led by many of it's past governors, ministers, generals and others.

You can not ignore him because of the numerous other political parties that have adopted him as their candidate.

Just yesterday, Alliance for Democracy (AD) also did same and all of their governorship, senatorial and house of representatives candidates in south west joined list of his endorsers.

Many others are rooting for Tope Fasua, Fela Durotoye etc.

For me, irrespective of the 3rd Force candidate you are rooting for, you deserve some commendation for standing out and i respect you.

Now, let's get to the basics of the presidential contest.

For a candidate to be declared winner of the election, he must, in addition to having the popular vote, have 2/3rd majority.

This means that, to stand a chance of being a serious contender in this election, the 3rd Force candidate must be well spread in at least, 2/3rd of the country.

By spread, i mean a structure, which include having candidates running election in 2/3rd of the country or at least, be structurally available in 50% of the country.

The 3rd Force candidates must not just think about being on the ballot and on the media, there must be a delibrate plan that is practical to cause a major upset.

Unfortunately, out of a possible 450 national elective positions to be contested for, Tope Fasua's party, ANRP has only 17 candidates.

Fela Durotoye party, ANN has only 21 candidates.

Omoyele Sowore's party, AAC has only 31, Oby Ezekwesili's ACPN has only 56 and Kingsley Moghalu's YPP has only 70 candidates.

If you add all these numbers together, it gives us about 190 candidates.

So, while Tope, Sowore, Fela, Kingsley and Oby joined together has about 190 candidates, Olawepo Hashim alone has more than their combined force in terms of spread.

Olawepo Hashim's party, People's Trust (PT) nominated about 200 candidates and one of the most vibrant candidate running under PT is my very best Barrister Tony Akika, a former Attorney General in Nasarawa state, running for federal house of representatives.

Apart from the PT, which fielded the highest nomination among all newly registered party, several other political parties have equally formed alliances with Hashim's PT, raising his spread to over 2/3rd of the country. This is a basic requirements to be a strong contender and in my opinion, thos is the best chance the 3rd Force can get.

The point i am trying to make is that, rather than go into this election, knowing fully well that most of our vibrant candidates do not have the structural spread to compete for victory even from a constitutional point of view, why not support Olawepo Hashim who is in the prime position to compete?

In terms of the issues, Hashim has been adjudged as the one with most indept understanding of the issues and has proffered practicable solutions.

In terms of experience, he is a global business man with investment in 4 continents of the world, particularly in Nigeria's energy and oil and gas sector, coupled with his human rights credential as a 1989 amnesty international prisoner of conscience and his political participation as member of G34 that led the process of returning Nigeria to democracy in 1999. Hashim has proven that he his well prepared.

Olawepo-Hashim challenges Buhari, Atiku to presidential debate

The presidential candidate of the People’s Trust, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Sunday challenged the presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress, President Muhammadu Buhari and that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, to a presidential debate.

He said the challenge became necessary following the failure of Buhari and Atiku to attend the debate held on Saturday.

Olawepo-Hashim threw the challenge in a statement in Abuja.

He said, “Nigerian voters deserve to scrutinise the candidates and programmes of the two behemoth that have come to be known as the ‘two evils’ of Nigerian politics. Their absence under whatever excuse(s) shows their contempt for the voters.”

He, however, congratulated Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, Mr Kinsley Moghalu and Mr Fela Durotoye for their performance at the debate.

“The three candidates advertised to the world a teaser of what stuff new generation of political leaders are made of,” he said.

Olawepo-Hashim called on the Nigeria Election Debate Group/Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria to organise another debate to include his party, which he described as the biggest of the newly-registered political parties that had been unfairly excluded.

He said, “We have complained about this in the past; a new debate will be a good way to cure the debate platform of that error.

“There is no problem in making a mistake by excluding us, but it will be dishonourable not to seize a good opportunity to correct your error.”

The PT presidential candidate further called on the organisers to also include promising politicians like Omoyele Sowore and others who might be interested in the next round of the debate.
