I don't know where you get the 200 people figure from..i guess one of those made-up figures just to make a point.

Your post is full of falsehoods and lack of understanding of how things work when it comes to relocating to any country not just the UK.

Whether you are a nurse of 5-6 tier in tech you are likely to struggling for some years before finding your feet, it will even get harder when you are a student, but things will definitely change if you don't listen to fear mongers like you.

Very few people land abroad and kick start things withing a year, many will do jobs outside their skill set until they get what they want.

Some of these delays are immigration status related while some are lack of in-country experiences.

Like i said before ..i read posts here and smh
on one hand you are saying it is false. In same breath you are saying it will take time to get their footing. I no follow you talk again, too zigzag.

You are using people's one year experience as new arrival to paint a dark picture of the whole immigration journey even as these people have not actually settled.

not a careless comment. She has friends who have left for the UK...as do I. Aside two, that got jobs from here, one as a Nurse and the other a radiologist, everyone else I know who has left for the UK on this study visa as dependant in over a year now are either working at the cash register, bagging products at a factory or doing care job (you said many sectors, well they are not in management, they are actual caregivers, trained to help out, administer drugs etc). Her own na 80%, mine na cool 99%. They keep encouraging me, and I keep hesitating cos I just can't do that. And yes, they also hardly see or have time for one another..as one person dey close for one shift, the other dey resume him/her own. Majority of ppl are leaving, and they still communicate with us back home, so it isn't hard at all to see the patterns and know what's what. Everything Poco said is consistent with what my contacts there are experiencing to a T. And I'm talking about over 200 people.

No be everything them dey argue. The pattern is there.

Someone I know said he went to the UK once and out of like 10 Nigerians, not up to 2 were doing something they could say with their full chest. The problem is, when you point this out, they start fighting themselves (not me). They think it is an attack on them, rather than an attack on the British system.

Treadway:
yen yen yen, everyone else makes claims, only you speak facts. Over 200 that followed your kin advice, that is their reality. Many that will follow it will still find it to be the reality. If you ain't a nurse or top tier in tech or finance and you're heading or have headed to the UK on study visa hustle, come back and shame this post, with a job tag other than care worker, or sales boy/girl. Cheers

What Pocohantas said as related to the bolded is true to a T, as seen in my circle too.

This is not going to happen and they know it.

I tire o. Always taking it personal. My wife earlier in the year started drumming the japa thing in my ear. One day I sat her down and analysed it just like this. I told her clearly that I have no intention of doing those jobs, but we can almost certainly expect that will be the reality for 1-2years (you don't plan these things with 'i have two heads my case is different' scenarios abi). My friend’s sister convinced her husband who has a thriving printing business to pack up and have them relocate. They got there and the guy did it for a while, as usual she was the one schooling. Switzerland and Australia are expensive to migrate to, but they offer a wealth of opportunities plus less tax compared to income. The Swiss pays the highest salaries only in match with the US.

It's not cheap, that's why few Nigerians are there. But for those there, they're chilling.

For International students in Australia, you can be making AUD 2000 in a week. Like damn. I guess because of their scrutiny, no jack and harry can just step in.

Recently, they launched a Visa scheme to take people with Two years of experience in IT or the Health field who gets at least 65 points more like the express entry for Canada (80 to be competitive ).

They say “over familiarity breeds contempt” that’s what I have noticed with Nigerians that think they know everything in the UK. So there are countries you can go as a student and get jobs as bank managers, Lead consultants, Construction supervisors, Warehouse Managers, head of departments etc whilst studying or as someone who just relocated and not on work sponsored visa? They are even lucky to have jobs to put a roof over there heads as students.

The care giver or healthcare support worker whatever you guys call it is a crowd mentality syndrome for Nigerians, that’s where they know someone that can easily link them to a quick job to do are working. To them is easier to do those jobs and study and probably can get lots of hours as per shift to earn money.

Nigerians are not the only international students in the UK, they don’t even make up to 10% of the UK international students population but most of them prefer to do care jobs as that’s the niche they’ve carved out for themselves. Most non African students prefer working in the retail, hospitality, Takeaways etc. They are not the best jobs but earn a living for themselves and even send money back home to families. Heard some even pay their school fees doing some of those jobs.

In the end some would get better jobs, some would settle for less, others might have to return to Nigeria. That’s life do whatever makes you happy.

I think there's lots of rumors and "my friends" case or "my friends said" in this UK discussion.

Yes. It is very risky to spend circa 20m naira to pursue immigration on students visa route. Assuming it's permanent residency on arrival, it would have been better.

Having said that, many people will still succeed in this journey. Many will regret it too. What makes the difference is individual focus, ambition and handwork.

All these talks of Nigerians with degrees doing care job, warehouse work is not a big deal. Even many Nigerian that went straight on permanent residence to Canada, US, Australia also did some of these jobs on arrival. It's only an issue if the Nigerian becomes comfortable in such jobs without finding ways to navigate themselves to more paying careers in the country.

One thing you cannot take away from these western countries compared to Nigeria is the pool of opportunities that exist to excel and succeed. The ball is only in your court to work hard and purse these opportunities. Yes it's always rough temporarily on arrival but if you know where to look, you will succeed.

Let me just add. A rat in Nigeria cannot become a lion in western countries. A lion in Nigeria will most likely remain a lion in western Countries. If you succeed as an hustler in Nigeria, you will most likely succeed in your hustle in western countries and vice-versa

This is very important for everyone to set their expectations correctly before moving to western world.

most things with Nigerians na usu crowd mentality. No surprises there. Ppl shd do whatever makes them happy for sure. I was only speaking for myself and my thoughts about the issue. Also, most of those contacts of mine are the dependents not even the students, and like Poco said, there is also a pattern where the man is the dependent and the wife the student (I guess for the man to be the one earning more). Which was why I told my wife if she would be willing to be the dependent while I the student. 40-60 hours a week doing what doesn't make me happy is very different from 20hrs a week. Thanks for your submission. Cheers

I was quite shocked when I saw their salaries. The firm I work remotely for is British, so it makes sense to earn and spend in Naira. But for me to enter plane and go there to collect that? Impossible. I have one friend in tech, he is probably the only truthful Nigerian in the UK. He says it as it is.

I work for a French company too.
Earn in dollars and spending and living in nija.
That is the best deal a man can get.

With that salary staying abroad, I will have to get extra job to meet up.
I don’t want stress for my life abeg.
Next 4 presidents with 8 years tenure, I go don nearly reach 80 or don enter grave.

I no get time to go start afresh they hustle again. How many productive years remain for my life now?

Honestly it is a very hard place to be. A senior colleague left last year. He celebrated his 40th birthday recently. I never knew he is up to 40. I would have guessed 37/38. Anyway, his wife refused to go with him. She works in a federal ministry in Abuja.

Correct response. You don't go to another man's land expect to start at the top just like that when you don't even have any value as such to offer to the country at that moment. This is the reason a lot fail when they come. I am a banker, I was a manager... So I can not do all these. There is diginity in labour and that one has decided not to do those looked down labour does not mean others doing it are fools. You get ICAN, you get experience for audit, no problem, no one is asking or begging you to leave your position and start all over abroad. I know everyone has the right to air their opinion but sometimes it goes from having that right to air opinion to envy. There are prices to pay for everything in this life, it depends on what you want that will qualify the price.

And to every story of people that failed, there are many stories of those that are successful.

Majority of the bad stories even come when the immigrants just arrived and still in that phase of doing any survival jobs. When they have found their feet and navigated to more rewarding careers, they don't tell you again, except the person became comfortable or lazy in those low level jobs.

Like I said, there are plenty of opportunities in western world you can NEVER find in Nigeria. You can take that to the bank.

As one with audit experience and an ICAN certificate, you obviously have better prospects there, you can be lucky to get a Big 4 firm offer.

pocohantas:

£9-20 before TAXES. Maybe before I was clueless on the workings, but not in October,2022.

You can only bamboozle other Nigerians that are quick to press calculator when they hear “£10/hr”, forgetting they won’t be spending this money in Naira.

I have friends and colleagues that have relocated. 90% of them work two jobs to keep afloat. 80% of them abandoned their professional skills to do care and social jobs.

I would take two bullets to my head before abandoning years of experience in audit, maybe an ICAN certificate to go do care job. Something I have seen way too many Nigerians do in the UK. Especially after paying a huge sum for Masters. It is not because I have anything against care jobs, but because it is an AFRONT to my sensibility.

Yes, I am not INTERESTED!

I beg to disagree. ICAN and ACCA are both backed by the IFRS standards.
Accounting/ Auditing in Nigeria is same as it is in the UK, so you need not have an ACCA qualification to get a good, full time accounting/ audit/ finance related offer in the UK. An ACCA qualification can be an added advantage, but with your ICAN, you will also be eligible for same opportunities.
