The first thing to remember is that, you are not the first person to have a new idea, even if your idea is the first of its kind. So there are well set out, and well established procedures, for the protection of inventions, and business ideas. It is your job, to find out, these things, if you want to become a serious business person, that will become a regional or continental player, and one day even global.

One of the most important things you do when you set up any business, is to get to know a good lawyer, and to build a relationship with that lawyer. You do not get a lawyer, because you are in trouble with the law, or in a dispute.

Most of the work of lawyers, in businesses has nothing to do with disputes, and courts. So, if you are in business, go find a lawyer today; tell them you are not in any trouble, but you need them because you are planning to grow into a serious business, one day. This is wise counsel.

If you are a business person, and you do not count a lawyer amongst your friends, then you are not yet ready for the big time. When your business is small, you can also find lawyers, who are also just starting out. Or even young lawyers who are happy to give you advice in the evenings. Develop a habit of always running, what you are planning to do past a lawyer friend.

When it comes to the protection of ideas, most commercial lawyers, will be able to tell you what to do, and many of the standard agreements, that you need to have can even be obtained Online. It is not a complicated area of the law and even a young lawyer, will be able to help you.
Re: Training: 40 businesses you can start with 1000 naira or less (with Videos) by Nobody: 3:26pm On Sep 29, 2014
When we sit down to discuss with banks, and investors, or even potential partners, the first thing we do is to exchange agreements, that protect both sides, from theft of ideas, by the other party. I will never, ever, discuss anything with anyone, that I am planning to do, with whom, I do not have such agreements, in place: I know the value of my ideas!
The first thing is to be discrete. If you are working with others, then you must all sign agreements, in which you agree not to take the idea, to other people, outside your circle, without consent of all the partners, in the project. If you find someone resisting such a proposal, then they probably have other ideas, on your ideas, and you have to be wary.

Always investigate to see if someone else, has already done it, and if they have a patent to protect the idea, including copyrights. In today's world of the Internet, this kind of information can be readily obtained Online.

Quite often you will find that someone else has been working on something, don't just copy it, but approach them to see how you can work with them, for your own market. To simply take, their idea, and proceed to execute it, is at best theft,and could land you in hot water.
A modern business today, no matter how small, should always be structured in a way, that enables it to be constantly innovative. I do not mind saying this; in our organisation, the fastest way to get my personal attention is to show that you are entrepreneurial and innovative.

One of the great mysteries in the world of discoveries, and inventions, is that every great idea, has more than one person working on it, even if they do not even know about each other. So, if you have an idea, don't waste time!
If you foolishly tell others, what you are planning, and then later find someone has implemented it, never say it was stollen...... you gave it away!

In Washington DC, vast majority of the tourists wandering around the city, with such excitement, are actually Americans from other cities and states within America. It really made me to yearn to see the same in Africa.
Africans need to travel, in Africa
The Ghanaian writer, Kofi Opoku, says:

"Do not say that your mother's stew is the best in the world, if you have never left your village".

We need to see more and more Africans, of all ages, travelling in Africa, as tourists. I would like to see more exchange programs between African countries for students, at all levels.
There are lots of investors who are keen to invest in Africa. They are either looking for partners who know Africa, or to hire professionals who also know Africa.

The truth of the matter is such people are not as many as one might think. It is a really small pool for a continent as large and diverse as ours.

As young Africans, our success and prosperity over the next few years, will depend to a great extent on how well, we know other African countries, other than our own country Nigeria.

Such knowledge does not come embedded in your brain, it comes only through reading about African countries, listening to news about Africa, and travelling in Africa.
Seven of the 10 fastest growing economies in the world today, are African. If you want to be part of this growing prosperity, now is the time to really determine in your heart to become a true expert of Africa. Even if you do not have money yet to visit African countries, there are many things you can do every day to improve your knowledge. One of them is to read news from other African countries on the Internet. Every day, I read Online news from different African countries.
Its time to visit Africa.

The Apostle Paul had a remarkable revelation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and accounts for nearly two thirds of the New Testament. He is by far my favourite bible character, after The Lord Jesus Himself..... I just love Paul!!! Paul had remarkable intellect, and was passionate about reading and learning. He was one of the most educated men, in his day. Just his writing style alone, has had more influence on the structure of language, than any man in history.

He was passionate about evangelism, and travelled through many parts of Europe and Asia, on foot! He was a man of boundless energy!

He was also a very successful entrepreneur! He even entered into joint ventures, with business partners. He made a lot of money, and although he received money from partners, who wanted to help him in his missionary trips, he never needed "aid or support from anyone". He graciously received the money, because he knew it would bless those who gave him the money.

Through Paul, we learn that God's concern is not that we have money, but rather how we make the money, and how we use it. Paul and his colleagues worked hard, made money, and used it to mount missionary trips, plant churches, and give to the poor; they kept nothing for themselves, and did not care for the trappings of wealth themselves. They did not beg anyone, or demand anything from anyone; they were as he put it, "self sufficient, and requiring no aid from anyone. And fully able to meet any need that confronted them." They saw the "love" of money, as evil, and not money, as evil.

Paul was a highly skilled professional man, and his skills were highly sought after. He was just like some of you, who might be computer programmers, architects, engineers, technicians, or farmers.

Where did I learn all this, you might ask? It is all right there in the bible; I do not use any other source other than the bible itself; and I do not read commentaries, about the bible.

The life of Paul as shown in the scriptures, shows us that even if you see yourself, as highly educated, it is important to always see your education, in terms of how it translates into skills; this is because to put food on the table, to send children to school, to be able to help those in need, to be able to partner in the work of ministry; we need to be PAID for our skills. We are paid for our skills, even if those skills derive from education.

In the next few posts, I intend to examine the issue of skills, and skills development.

When I left university, I had a degree in electronic engineering, but I was acutely aware that I was not yet an engineer. I now had to use that qualification to acquire some skills for which I would be paid a lot of money. One of the first things I did was to enrol myself for basic craft skills training, like house wiring, fixing radios and TVs. I could use a lathe (a mechanical tool). These were skills that university trained engineers, shunned or looked down on, as below their level. I did this whilst some of my colleagues were registering for Masters Degree.
Even as a young man my mother would always scold me if I looked down on any job that a person does.
When I finally got my first job, I was extremely popular with artisans, and technicians, because they knew I understood their job. I could always command their respect.

Some of you will recall, from some of the posts, about how I started in business. I was doing very basic things like selling spoilt car batteries, electrical wiring, picking scrap metals. Those early customers were not interested in the fact that I had an honours degree in electronic engineering, from a top Nigerian university. I never told them; I knew who I was, and it had nothing to do with the job I did. The future billionaires are currently waiting on tables, and fixing plumbing... even in Silicon Valley.

If you cannot raise money for the "big" project in your vision; start small, at SOMETHING, using what little you have, even if it means selling tomatoes, at the local market: Learn to be "faithful with little"; its a biblical principle and always have a plan.

In my opening post, I said that although Paul was highly educated, he still had a craft skill or trade: he was a Tentmaker.

What is the equivalent of a Tentmaker, in our modern world? Yes, you have a High School diploma, or college certificate, a degree or even masters... that is good: congratulations; but what skills are you trading with?

-A top executive of a leading luxury car manufacturer, in Europe, once said that they make a lot of money sending a technician to an African country, to "charge the battery"!
-An Italian company executive said they make millions every year, fitting floor tiles in Africa. He could not believe that some "young chaps, there in Africa, have not figured this out; otherwise we would be out of business!"
- 75%, of the eggs and chickens eaten in some African countries, come from India, and Brazil!

Always seize every opportunity to solve a problem, that’s how tentmakers do it!

The seven skills you should have, NOW!

If I was leaving school today, even with just a national diploma, there are seven things, I would want to learn to do, as soon as possible:

- prepare a financial ledger;
- HTML and basic coding;
-backing up to the cloud;
- write a business plan;
- setting up a website and domain;
- selling Online;
- have a basic craft skill, even in agriculture, tailoring (or plumbing).

I would do this, even if I had studied political science, law or medicine!
I would do this if I wanted to be a top professional, in the new economy!
I would do this if I wanted to be a top entrepreneur!

These seven skills will either turn you into the next Jack Ma, or they will help you get a better job, or earn you more money, at whatever you do. If you are already working, even as a teacher in the rural areas. You should try and get these seven skills ("WITH ALL YOUR GETTING"wink, within the next 12 months. This is what you should be teaching, if you want to build Africa and Nigeria’s prosperity.

Let those who have ears to hear, HEAR.
The world has changed.
In the next post, I will tell you why you MUST have these skills. Meanwhile, if you are learning about some of them for the first time, I suggest you use your research skills on the Internet to find out what they are.

My challenge for this weekend as my custom is, is to create a topic that will be front-page worthy. I have talked about creating value, adding value in whatever setting you find yourself. I need a follower of this thread to create a topic within the next 7 days that will grace the front page of NAIRALAND.

This is a challenge, the topics can be created in any section of this forum except ROMANCE, CELEBRITY or POLITICS sections. The first person to have His or Her topic make front page will win an airtime voucher from me. I am also into this challenge, will create my own topics as well. When you do, kindly post a link to you topic here.

Please Note that I am not affiliated to Nairaland or any of their Moderators. This is just an open challenge!

A 9 years old girl told me something one day, that profoundly changed my outlook on skills development:

"My teacher told us, that by the time we get to 25 years old, most of the jobs, that will be available will be in companies that do not yet exist.."

I was totally amazed, by this comment, and the wisdom of it. I almost wanted to run outside and shout it out from the roof tops!

Twenty years ago, the Internet barely existed:

The giant companies like Google, Alibaba, Facebook, and countless others, did not even exist! There was barely a cell phone industry, and now even that has been overtaken by the Social Media giants.

As a young man I remember giant companies that seemed to have been there forever, that have either faded away or just no longer exist.

There are many people, who find it so difficult to cope with change. People who cannot cope with shifting dispensations, and always want to see things, as "they were", it is not just old people, I see it even in young people.

When I thought prayerfully about what that girl’s wise teacher had said, I realised that even in our skills, each one of us must be constantly upgrading those skills. There is absolutely no one exempted: no, no one is exempted.

Whatever skills you hold, they will be obsolete, within 5 years. Even if you are a teacher, the things you know and are teaching, and the way you teach, will be essentially obsolete within 5 years! In school, we all were taught that Pluto was a planet, but now it has been voted out of the list of planets! If you are a leader even of a nation, the "leadership craft" too, is changing.

The other day, I was listening to a commentary on the coaching methods of football managers. It was just amazing to see how the techniques of the younger managers, had so revolutionised the game. The game is not the way it was played in 1970, even if you think Pele was the best; the modern player is quicker, fitter, and more skilled on the ball; that is a scientific fact.

As a Tentmaker, you need to understand that if you are to increase your "earning capacity", and not find yourself, overtaken by youngsters like that little girl, you must be upgrading your skills, constantly....permanently.

In many African countries, people find it so difficult to build a successful business, which is not based on contracts with governments or local authorities. This is why so many people believe that it is not possible to be in big business unless you are somehow connected to those in power or high places. It is after all, those in power who control government contracts, and projects.
So, many believe that to build a successful business you must either have a powerful relative, kinsman, or you pay bribes.
What I have been trying to show you, through this and other posts, is that:

"IT AIN'T NECESSARILY SO!!!.."
..............(Taken from a song, that I like to sing, when I need to challenge something taken as conventional wisdom)

There is a lot of business opportunities that you can pursue successfully without being dependent on governments or powerful connections.
The Internet and the mobile revolution have liberated us to build a new generation of businesses, and social enterprises, that play by a different set of rules.

If you learn things like "HTML Coding", and how to "sell Online", you can equip yourself with the capacity to build a new generation of business, which allows you to sell your goods and services, not only to people in your country, but even beyond, almost instantly.

You can build businesses like Alibaba, Weibo, Tencent, Facebook, Yookos, Twitter, and such like. You will not need to fight for contracts, and tenders, or land, or mineral rights, or an oil block.

You will not need to raise big bank loans to start, or rent expensive premises. You will not need to move to the big city in your country. You will not need to go to Silicon Valley. You and your friends can work from a small kitchen, somewhere, even in ajegunle.

As Jack Ma of Alibaba showed us, you do not need to be an engineer or rocket scientist:
-If you are a school teacher, you can start posting lessons for African children, even tomorrow.
-If you are a nurse you can share some of your health tips online, even tomorrow.
- If you are a farmer or agri-entrepreneur, you can earn more money than ever before, by using these new tools.

Just imagine what would happen to your country and Africa, if you too could launch a business like Alibaba, or Tencent? Each one of these businesses is worth more than all the diamonds in Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Their combined value is almost the size of the Nigerian economy! The trend we are seeing in China that gave way for companies like Alibaba, and Tencent to emerge is also coming to Africa.

Even if all you just want is a job; then equip yourself, for the greatest job revolution in modern history, DIGITAL JOBS!!!!
There is already $5bn, worth of jobs every year, being done by young Africans, from their homes and Internet cafes.... Right now, in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa! This is growing quickly, and you can be part of this revolution, within 6 months; making money for your family, and earning foreign exchange for your economy!

Most goods and services will be sold Online within 10 years, as everyone will have a Smartphone or a tablet. And those who will hear my clarion call to develop their businesses and social enterprises using this medium of the Internet, will reap the benefits in a big, BIG way. Only you must get in quickly!

Let this Internet liberate you, from today!
