striktlymi:

Matthew 16: 18-19
"18 And so I tell you, Peter: you are a rock, and on this rock foundation I will build my church, and not even death will ever be able to overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.”

The above is the statement from the Master himself and I take it very literally.

I have gone through some of the arguments and declarations from those who have shown a healthy interest in the current synod and I sense that a number of you guys are AFRAID!!!

If the Church decides to allow divorced and remarried couples partake in Holy communion, which by the way supports divorce indirectly, who are we to say NO!!! The Church gives an order to the faithful and Heaven accepts that order. This is the implication of what Jesus revealed.

I see no reason why we allow ourselves to be overtaken by fear. The Church belongs to Jesus. Let him do whatever he wills with it. If he wants the Church to go back to the time of Moses where divorce was permitted, so be it.

Every Catholic should pray but the reality is that our prayers does nothing with respect to whether Jesus decides to guide his Church or not. He promised to be with his Church irrespective of our prayers.

I have this strong feeling that the document released will not be significantly different from the final outcome. I believe the Church has made the following decisions (though I may be wrong):

1) Divorced couples who are not re-married will be allowed to receive the Holy communion if the divorce is no 'fault' of theirs.
2) Divorced couples who are re-married will not be permitted but they can still enjoy some level 'community' life with the Church.

The extract below pretty much sums up the mind of the synod:

"Jesus Himself, referring to the primordial plan for the human couple, reaffirms the indissoluble union between man and woman, while understanding that “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning” (Mt 19,8. In this way, He shows how divine condescension always accompanies the path of humanity, directing it towards its new beginning, not without passing through the cross.

Divorced people who have not remarried should be invited to find in the Eucharist the nourishment they need to sustain them in their state. The local community and pastors have to accompany these people with solicitude, particularly when there are children involved or they find themselves in a serious situation of poverty.

In the same way the situation of the divorced who have remarried demands a careful discernment and an accompaniment full of respect, avoiding any language or behavior that might make them feel discriminated against. For the Christian community looking after them is not a weakening of its faith and its testimony to the indissolubility of marriage, but rather it expresses precisely its charity in its caring."

my dear you are correct to note that I am afraid.

before I continue I just want to inform you that divorced couples have for a very long time been allowed to receive communion, that's is long settled I believe it even appears in the CCC.

the question is on remarried couples, actually i'm confident that the synod final statement will be consistent with catholic teaching. I also think it will be ambiguous and less define. that's what scares the hell out of me. the report from priests sent abroad scares me, there is a decay going on there, reports of bishops, priests even cardinals who seem to have a disturbing disregard for Catholic teaching scares me.

there will be holes in the document, that is all that is needed, there will be a ripple effect and the church isn't prepared for it. do u know what happened in Vatican 2? we had a great council but while d priest were talking about the "the spirit of the council", a spirit of confusion appeared, the decay there can be traced back to that time.

we should be praying, we don't know the extent of the battle God is fighting for us.

May I jump in please.
The church doesn't carry out divorce, even where couples divorce legally in the secular court the church recognises the marriage as valid.
the church does carry out annulments which is where a church tribunal looks at the marriage to determine its validity. If not valid(due to a no. of specific reasons),the marriage is declared null and void meaning no marriage ever took place in God's eyes. The couple is then free to remarry as long as one is not permanently impotent.
