Their storylines sold them not the dialect.
how can you compare the great storylines of those old nollywood with ada mbano?
If to say she didn't speak mbano, that movie wouldn't have series because the storyline alone is even crappy.
What is special about a gal leaving a village to join loose gals in the city? na today?

The same storyline that sold Jenifa. And the Igbo dialect chosen was best for the story and plot. It's that simple. Not the pecularity of the dialect itself.

this has nothing to do with jenifa. how many of us knew the film? if not for nl, those that knew would not have .....
In your imaginations, mbano ppl are supposed to be uncivilized? clap for your self.
Queen nwokoye complained in an interview that the movie did not feature in African magic cos they were told it lacked content, that is true, though I think it should still be incorporated.
If that movie was made in anambra dialect, it won't go far. just listen to the words people make while remembering the movie .
Ada abakiliki was another movie which the abakiliki dialect sold.
Francis, go and ask, imo dialects are the most spectacular of Igbo dialects.
Is it not the same anambra dialect that amaechi muonagor always speaks? If he were nit a good actor, who was paying attention to his dialect?

@bold1...I think you just killed your own point. Despite the 'spectacular' of the dialect as you would have us believe, the movie still did not make it to African Magic. On the other hand, several other Igbo movies are making it to AM.

@bold2...if Ada Abakaliki and Nkoli nwa Nsukka would sell in the same vein as Ada Mbano...what does that tell you? Does that leave only Imo dialects, as you propose, as spectacular?

You've awfully failed to realize that it is basically the same storyline running through Ada Mbano, Ada Abakaliki and Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, all the same but told in 3 different Igbo dialects. If Nkoli nwa Nsukka and Ada Abakaliki, having the same storyline as Ada Mbano, could sell with the same fervour as the latter, that simply means Imo dialects are not exclusive in spectacular. If spectacular was exclusive to Imo dialects as you propose, then we wouldn't expect Ada Abakaliki and Nkoli nwa Nsukka to sell in the same light. It is basically the same story told but in different dialects. Realize this, it is the unique combination of the storyline and dialect fit for the storyline that makes the movies sell. The dialects were chosen for they fit the storyline in that regard.

Not also forgetting the dexterity of the lead actress, Queen Nwokoye, in Ada Mbano that gave the movie a complete tripod balance.

I never said anywhere that Mbano people were uncivilized, neither did I imply that anywhere. I was simply referring to the storyline of the movie. Whatever you make out of the statement is at your own choice.

Well, this has been going on for sometime but i think it has there snice pre colonial days. I will submit my personal views.
Firstly,Anambra is geographically located close to River Niger - a commercial/trade center snice precolonial days. This area serves as a trade zone for Igbos,Benin and Igalas. In essence, Anambra interacted with merchants and imported exotic wares into igboland. It is on record that Christanity first crept into Igboland through Onitsha in 1857 before spreading to all corners of igboland. Anambras had firsthand interaction with white missionary/colonialist,and some of the earliest industries, colonial offices and schools was established in this area. Methodist college in Uzuakoli,Abia was established before DMGS Onitsha but Anambras grabbed their opportunities on time because of their exposure.
Secondly, Nri Anambra falsly claim to be igbo forerunners, while we all know that the modern Igbo Nation is quite heterogenous. Onitsha for example is an Anioma town,a blend of Igbo,Igala and Benin. Oguta is equally anioma.
I believe Onitsha is the lightest igbo dialect in Anambra.
Thirdly,Anambra dialect is just like every other igbo dialect. It is on record that an unfamiliar dialect sound exotic to others. I am Southern Igbo but am always curious when i listen to Northern Igbo accents. On the other way round, when i travel to Norther Igboland, folks there would also be curious and excited when i speak my dialect. Have you seen British people react to American English yo,wanna,gonna...lol?
So its a two way thing, strange accents sound exotic, it does not mean that Anambra dialect is better or sweeter. Personally,i don't really like it.
Early Nollywood Igbo was centered on Anambra dialect,no doubt. Most of those producers and key actors were more conversant with Anambra dialects ,e.g Rita Nzelu, Amaka Igwe, Osuofia, Pete Edochie, Ndidi Obi,Francis Agu, Bob manuel Udokwu etc.
No dialect is easy, the more you get exposed to a dialect, the more familiar it becomes. I think it is a veiled form of inferiority complex, when someone speaks to you in his dialect and you don't respond in your dialect. That is the purpose of Igbo izugbe, when communication is difficult you respond use central Igbo. I can't imagine responding in another dialect unless it's for eye service, price bargain or compromise.
On Attitude and Character, Anambras have this sweet enterprenuer spirit and are very smart in business. They have produced great Igbo/Nigerian figures owing to their smartness and eagerness to do well. But this is not an isolated case. All Igbo states have produced great men and women that have contributed positively to Nigeria.
Re: Igbos Attention Needed Here For Enlightenment .... by Ihuomadinihu: 9:36pm On Oct 19, 2014
Interstate relationship: I believe all Igbo states are comfortable with each other. However, when it comes to marriage, Anambra folks would frown at non Anambra suitors or relationships. Anambra would want to marry Anambra or Enugu but will not want to step outside their comfort zone. On the other hand, the other states are more than willing to marry from other states. I noticed Anambra are more comfortable with Benin folks.
It actually untrue that Southern Igbos girls desire Anambra men cos of this preconceived aloofness. Southern Girls tend to marry other Southerners. No girl is ready to endure 'my people are superior attitude or my dialect is superior'. Lol.

Anambra probably have more Industrialist and renowed business men...Nice one.
Imo probably have more scholars and hospitality areas.
Abia,Anioma and Ebonyi probably have more tourist and Agricultural zones.
Enugu is probably the poshest and coolest place to live in.
But this is what makes us a great Igbo race so i wonder who is better or more classy....
After all said and done,we are the same people with the same purpose.
Re: Igbos Attention Needed Here For Enlightenment .... by Ihuomadinihu: 10:02pm On Oct 19, 2014
P.s, There is nothing like posh Igbo dialect. I have listened to some Anambra dialect and its just as thick as any other Igbo dialect. I read a transcript of Chinua Achebe's speech translated in his native idemili dialect, and it was thick. What is actually posh is the Northern Central dialect used in Anambra,Enugu and Asaba, which was used in Nneka the pretty serpent etc, and Southern Central Igbo used in Abia,Imo,Ebonyi to an extent in Port Harcourt and used in numerous nollywood movies.
You need to speak one of the two if you want to find your way round Igboland.
So lets stop this Anambra is posh or sweeter than all Igbo dialects.
On Royalty, yes Anambra are people that are inclined to reverence royalty in Igboland cos of their royalty status of yester-years. There are only three Kingdoms in Igboland, Nri Kingdom, Aro and Agbor kingdom. The rest are largely republican. Does the absence of kingship make one inferior? That was the mistake white colonialist made with Igbos because they had no large political unit like Hausa and Fulani. All Igbo states are special and they should feel good and walk with prestige without rubbing in any form of vain preconceived superiority.

Idemili dialect is the lightest dialect in Anambra, infact, the Igbo spoken in the streets of onitsha that you people call onitsha Igbo, is actually the Idemili dialect of Obosi,Nkpor and Ogidi. The Onitsha dialect spoken by onitsha people in their villages is quite different from the Idemili dialect used in Onitsha township.
Re: Igbos Attention Needed Here For Enlightenment .... by Ihuomadinihu: 7:48am On Oct 20, 2014
@Pazienza, Thanks,i never knew that Idemili dialect was widely used in Onitsha and environs.
Anyway, Anambra dialect was not originally regarded as posh and mutually intelligible according to history stated below:
Early colonialist and Missonaries first settled in Onitsha/Agbor region. Notable mentions like Dr. Wards, Samuel Crowther, Archeacon Dennis and William Baikie(Bekee) etc, first settled in this region.
For effective administation, these missionaries tried to learn and write Igbo language.
Samuel Crowther also tried to write some Igbo words. The notable igbo dialect was the Isuama dialect which was commonly used by Igbo slaves in America and freed slaves of Igbo descent. But this dialect was not totally intelligible, so they shifted their attention to Union Igbo.
Union Igbo was made up of Arochukwu, Uwana ,Onitsha and Owerri dialect but it was not widely accepted too.
When Christainty and education began to spread, they felt it was time to adopt a specific dialect. So they sent Dennis to look for that specific dialect. In the course of his researsh, Dennis suggested that Owerri dialect had the purest Igbo dialect. So Dennis began to reconstruct Igbo orthography, replacing /s/ with owerri /shi/, most people did not like the new orthography so the struggled continued.
It is also important to state that Pita Nwana published the first Igbo fiction in 1933.
In 1939, a research commitee was established to search for the best dialect that will be suitable as a medium of literary instruction.
Dr Wards was commissioned for this assignment, her research covered Owerri and Umuahia areas with specific inclination towards Ohuhu dialect. This was widely accepted by missionaries, writers, publishers and Cambridge University.
The standard Igbo dialect was now formed by writing the Central Igbo dialect with the previous orthography.
In 1944, the Anglican church struct to Dr.Wards version, the Catholics insisted on Onitsha version and Methodist embraced central dialect(standard).
Subsequently, the Ministry of Education in 1944 decided to embrace the central dialect for literary purposes.
The First Department of Igbo Language was established in Anambra State College of Education at Awka.
Re: Igbos Attention Needed Here For Enlightenment .... by Ihuomadinihu: 8:48am On Oct 20, 2014
From that brief history above,it is imperative to state that the dialect with wide acceptance is the simplest, mutually intelligible and posh Igbo dialect. But Owerri,Ezinihite and Umuahia people don't shout or struggle to tell us that their dialects form the buck of Igbo Izugbe. The written Igbo dialect is the standard central version,in nollywood, actors are entitled to speak NCI or SCI.
So it is superficial to state that a particular non widely accepted dialect is the 'poshest and sweetest.
Most Historians intially covered Anambra history and used it as a model or measurement of Igbo culture, without remembering that culture is not homogenous. The early colonialist and historians found it diifcult to embark on expeditions in other areas of Igboland.
I would like to commend Anambras for grabbing their opportunities on time, but it's insultive and corny to state you are more special or posses a better dialect/character in the entire Igboland.

@OP, it is not as if Anambra is superior to other Igbos but its just that it is regarded as a royal thing sort of to be from anambra. Just as Americans, Britons, Australians are all English speaking and genetically the same people but being from England kinda attaches this prestige to you and your English accent stands you out from all other English speakers. Same applies to Anambra people and Anambra Igbo.

Many things contribute to this fact. History has it that Nri-Igbo Ukwu axis in Anambra is the cradle of the Igbo race, from which other Igbos came from. Many other theories exist that say otherwise anyway. Another thing has to do with the Anambra general dialect. Anambra Igbo is deemed posh, sweet-sounding and classy to speak of all Igbo dialects. When one mentions Anambra general Igbo, one refers specifically to the Onitsha/Awka/Enugwu-Ukwu/Nri Igbo that is used to represent Anambra. When I was growing up I used to follow my dad to many social Igbo gatherings, and I observed that the general Igbo spoken was the anambra dialect, and many non-anambra Igbos all spoke the dialect. This is so because it is somewhat the easiest of Igbo dialects to learn and speak and very easy to understand by all other Igbo groups. The Onitsha man does not need to twist his Igbo for any random Igbo person to understand him. He is easily understood by everyone. On the other hand, an Owerri man or Abakaliki man, in order for an outsider to understand him, has to modify his Igbo to be understood. It has also remained the default dialect in most Igbo speaking movies since the inception of Nollywood till today and non-Anambra Igbos all speak the dialect in the movies. Also, for those Igbos who like to form English-speaking Ajebo and classy chic/guy, they can speak Anambra Igbo and not be regarded as ajepako unlike compared to some concentrated Igbo dialects which when spoken Igbos around you will immediately regard you as 'bush person', i.e 'onye ime obodo'. I did my secondary school in Owerri and my Igbo secondary school teacher was from Anambra and we had 2 Igbo teachers that taught us, the second being from Imo state and each assigned to particular classes. Everybody used to enjoy the Anambra woman's class because of her Igbo and her classes were always very full and students from the other classes assigned to the other Igbo teacher would come to my class during Igbo class time just to listen to the woman speak. Anambra Igbo is admired all over Igboland and when in other states, especially Imo and Abia state, and you speak Anambra Igbo, many would often reply you back in the dialect and want you to speak on so they could enjoy it more. I grew up and also did my NYSC in Owerri, Imo state and countless times have I been admired because of my Anambra Igbo accent. My PPA was Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission(ISOPADEC), a commission in charge of all oil producing activities in Imo state but they drafted we corpers out to special schools to impact positively in terms of education to the students. The moment my students knew I was from Anambra, they wouldn't let me be o everyday I came to work. In class, I must speak Anambra Igbo to them or else they'd start making loud noises. grin I usually told them stories, in Anambra Igbo, and they loved it so much each time I did and they would be going crazy because of the dialect. Some even went out of their way to learn the dialect and once I stepped into class, they'd start speaking it to me...and I'd be like... cheesy. I also remember making a call one day to my distant cousin from the same village, I had just bought credit from the store woman and stood nearby making the call in my dialect, and next thing she and her husband came out of their store, to look for that anambra guy speaking this Anambra Igbo, and when they saw it was me and refused to go inside again o but stood there listening to my conversation. When I noticed what was happening, trust me nau smiley, I even increased my tempo and blasted the thing the more...they just stood there smiling at me. cheesy Once I dropped the call, they walked back inside their store smiling. wink Aha, I just made someone's day.grin Or how many times have I gotten away with great deals and bargains at Owerri main market just because I spoke Anambra Igbo. Immediately they knew i'm from Anambra they'll be like...'nwa anambra!'...and tended to ease up and gave me much better deals. Even my mom was loved greatly at FUTO Owerri where she worked just because she's from Anambra...'nwanyi Anambra' as they would fondly call her.

Anambra people are also known by other Igbos to be hardworking, have money, or good at business and Imolites the ones going to school the most in Igboland. Many high profile Igbo indigenes tend to come from Anambra such as Chinua Achebe, Chimamanda Adichie, Cosmas Maduka aka Cosharis, owner of Ekene dili Chukwu Motors, Ifesinachi Motors, owner of Innoson motors, Dora Akunyili, Oby Ezekwesili, Philip Emeagwali(aka father of the Internet), Pete Edochie, Oge Okoye, P Square, Flavour etc are all from Anambra. Last year, one of our family friends from Ebonyi state told me how majority of the real estate properties and high-profile buildings and houses in Abakaliki are owned by Anambra people. It is the desire of many non-anambra girls to marry an Anambra man because they believe they would not suffer financially. Anambra men and women make very good husbands and wives too.

And also, anambra people help each other a lot! We call it, 'ime nwanne' ie 'brotherly relationships'. This is one big difference I noticed between Anambrarians and Imolites. Anambra people tend to be nicer and kinder. It is common to find a selfless person or an averagely rich man/woman in Anambra training orphans, less-priviledged people, distant relations or people not related to him in anyway all through primary, secondary and university, feeding and clothing them in addition. This is quite rare to find in Imo state. In Enugu township(formerly Anambra's state capital and still retains mainly Anambra Igbo, many Anambra people live there, and the Anambra attitude) or Awka(capital of Anambra state), you can literally run out of transport money on the streets and walk up to people to plead for money and before you reach the 3rd person you would have found someone who would give you the money you need in full, however in Imo state you would have to reach the 15th or 20th person to find someone willing to help you out. Being kind is a rarity in Imo state but a normal thing in Enugu or Anambra state.

It is not my intention to extol anambra state or anambra Igbo over other dialects but I am giving you an insider's view, as an Igbo person born and bred in Igboland, of the extra attention given to Anambra state and people in Igboland by other Igbos.

Some of the things this guy said is true but I dont expect everybody to like it.
Yes,Anambra dialect is posh and smooth and yes the most sacred Offor Igbo is in Anambra and yes Anambra culture is more influential. But Anambra is not superior to any other Igbo!

Well, like i said early Igbo actors were Northern Igbos. Look at the names of these actors and google their states of Origin.
Nkem Owoh, Chinyere Wilfred, Pete Edochie, Dolly Unachukwu, Francis Agu, Amaka Igwe, Ndidi Obi, Ngozi Ezeonu, Bob Manuel, Amaechi Munagor, Ego Boyo,Rita Nzelu.
The non Northern Igbo actors like Genevive, Aki and Pawpaw, James Iroha, Emeka Ike, Mike Ezuruonye, Sandra Achums,Chinyere Nwabueze etc never spoke NCI in movies.
The influence of both NCI and SCI stops within its boundaries, unless you want to speak any of them. Nobody speaks Anambra dialect in nollywood unless he is a native and influenced by it.
I have explained this issue before.
What we call Igbo izugbe,is an amalgamation of Southern(Central) dialect, and that is the most recognised and widely used dialect in Igboland.
Nobody is degrading Anambra dialect but there is nothing that makes it more special than over 40 dialects of Igboland.
Let us refrain from making Supremacist comments, you are only washing your dirty linens in public.
I believe Igbos have better issues that require immediate attention.
About cultural heritage, how do you define Official or National Igbo attire. So if one chief Chinedu wears his village attire,it becomes less igbo cos it does not fit your idea of National attire?
Take a look at some items that form Igbo attire: George wrapper, Akwaete, Ukara cloth, Woolen cap, Trouser, Red cap, waist beads, coral beads, blouse, Akwa ishi agu etc.
What is Igbo attire when Igbo culture is heterogenous?
There are different Igbo gods, from Anambra to Imo and they were all embraced by all pre colonial Igbo folks. That the mmanu is on the passport does not mean that it's the only recognised Igbo mmanu. Why do people indulge in selective reasoning?
Culturally,Anambra starts and ends in Northern Igboland. This supremacist stuff escalated when early missionaries and igbo researchers tried to impose Nri hegemony on Igbo culture cos that was the first culture they encountered.
Do y'all think believe you will be talking about Nri,if the researchers decided to initially explore Afikpo, Ohafia or Nkwerre culture?
Pls,lets be civil here!

Yes,Anambra dialect is posh and smooth and yes the most sacred Offor Igbo is in Anambra and yes Anambra culture is more influential. But Anambra is not superior to any other Igbo!

thanks.
What they speak in nollywood is central Igbo, contrary to what somebody wanted me to believe.
With the most actors being from imo, and the likes of patience ozokwo, Mr Ibu, chinwetalu agu, osuofia, etc being from Enugu, how does nollywood use anambra dialect exactly?

Are you sure you watch Nollywood movies? Or you prefer to dwell in fantasies created by you?

It's clear you don't watch Nollywood Igbo. It's of no use proving the opposite point to you since you prefer disillusionment to reality.

What are you actually trying to prove? Igbo nollywood movies make use of Central Igbo dialects, however, actors speak the dialects that are familiar to them. Ngozi Ezeonu speaks Anambra, Ogechi Obilionu speaks proper Owerri dialect, etc.
What is this superior complex about??

in central Igbo, its orie. you see why I said central Igbo wasn't derived from anambra?
Red hat is for titled men but you chose to wave away the other things I mentioned.
Just wanted you to know your own assertions are wrong.

What of isi, bu, ofe, osisi, kedu etc used in Central Igbo that are of Northern Igbo origin?

The sentence structure of Central Igbo is Northern derived and much of the vocabulary is southern derived, with flushes of Onicha Igbo here and there. Before current Central Igbo, other central Igbo dialects had been formed, for example the Union Igbo which was abakaliki-influenced. i.e o diwo mma (that's Union Igbo). Pre-civil war there was heavy debate about which Igbo dialect to officially adopt to unite Igbos. Several dialects were proposed, no agreements were reached. Central Igbo as you have it today was the last proposal to be made before the civil war. It was not until after the Civil war, the federal Government headed by Gowon made Igbo one of Nigeria's 3 Official languages and adopted Central Igbo as the standardized dialect for the language. The Igbos then couldn't care less about the dialect adopted as they were recovering from the debilitating effects of the civil war. They were more concerned about recovering economically than resuming the on-going debate over which dialect to choose for official orthography.

Central Igbo = Northern Igbo lexical structure + Southern Igbo vocabulary.

For example,

Northern Igbos would say: Emeka na-abia ebe a taata izu afia,
Owerri/Aba would say: Emeka biaga nga taa izu ahnia(with nasal pronunciation).
Central Igbo: Emeka na-abia ebe a taa/taata izu ahia.

NI: Ife afu o na-eme adiro mma. Si ya kwusi kita.
Owerri Igbo: Ihe ahu o mega arii mma. Shi nwo kwushi ugbu u.
Central Igbo: Ihe ahu o na-eme a dighi mma. Si ya kwusi ugbu a.

A close look at the central Igbo renderings would quickly tell you that it's sentence structures are based on Northern Igbo and vocabulary from southern Igbo.

Don't twist it to make it sound like it tilts towards one angle. Of course, the way the typical Owerri or Ngwa man speaks is entirely different from Central Igbo.

Who was the Imo man?

Who was the Imo man?

S.E Onwu who brought about the Onwu Orthography of writing and spelling Igbo language. Anybody who did Igbo in secondary school should know this. Much thanks to his works else Igbo language would have been left without a standard orthography.

Northern Igbo: Osisi afu bu nke e ji esi nni.
Southern Igbo: Oshishi ahu wu ke e ji eshiga nri.

Central Igbo: Osisi ahu bu nke e ji esi nri.

How does Central Igbo tilt towards southern Igbo as you would have us believe?
