Oil price is falling in the international market and Nigeria who happens to be producing a large quantity of the oil will start paying more for it. What a country.

We've been expecting it. I don't know if this is true but I heard that it's illegal to operate a mini modular refinery in nigeria. If true, that law should be repealed immediately and people can get licences to build import/build mini modular refineries. We can't afford to wait till Dangote finishes his refinery in 2018.

Our currency will appreciate if we start refining our oil.

We are also importing a large amount of refined oil for domestic consumption...which is a part of the reason why prices will shoot up.

Its not rocket science, subsidy will definitely go next year. Our reserves are declining, oil price is falling, and we'll be spending a lot on defence and the elections next year. Something's gotta give.

There's a special place in hell for those m0r0ns who think the fuel price hike from the removal of fuel subsidy payments will be 'temporary' and that prices 'will be driven down eventually due to market forces'.

It take a special case of treachery to support fuel subsidy removal, perhaps one of the few things that the ordinary Nigerian enjoys from their corrupt leadership. The question we should be asking is why we can be swayed to vote for someone who cannot end the subsidy frauds, and why subsidy payments keep going up despite the partial removal which should have seen the payments drop significantly.

Neither GEJ or Okonjo Iweala have been able to come up with empirical reasons why subsidy payments are drastically on the rise again. It's not like our population has exponentially increased or the absolutely number of cars in Nigeria has been raised dramatically. Govt claims that more and more people enjoy better power, so we expect a commensurate drop in amount of fuel being used in Generators.

An oil producing giant talking about fuel subsidy whilst others are talking about refineries! Shame! This is the height of insanity.

The govt has no business running those buinesses, the best is to create an environment conducive and favourable for the private sector to invest and you know that won't happen in a regulated and subidized economy. That's the simple truth. I have been against subsidy even right from OBJ time, it doesn't help the economy grow and as we know it has bocome a conduit pipe for corruption.

yea right. What has happened since they partially removed the subsidy in 2012??

Austerity measure for the poor once again. Sell off some of the private jets. Reduce aso rock budget. Reduce aides and special advisers. Curb waste at federal level. Not going to happen while nigerians chose to vote a " christian " president who does not behave like our Lord Jesus but prays all the time in public with cameras snapping like the pharasees did
. Gullible masses.

Speaking in the same vein , Austin Nweze of Pan Atlantic University said that subsidy would create jobs for other countries at the expense of Nigerians

He said in the short run, the cut may affect the price of fuel, as it would go up temporarily, but in the long run, it would benefit Nigerians.

The government, he said, should remove subsidy completely and encourage the establishment of refineries in the country, adding that such a move would encourage competition in the price of fuel.

He however expressed fears that corruption may pose as an obstacle, as those that are benefitting from the corrupt system may work against the proposal.

Wicked Nigerians. The price of fuel will not go up because crude oil has dropped and refined fuel is about 95 Naira per liter on the international market. Nigerians are just too greedy.

If i hear say dem wan use am build refinery! All the ones wey dem don dey remove since, how many are we accountable to? Just another dimension to further thief the national cake.

How do you curb the excesses of the subsidy thieves if not by removing the subsidy from which they feed fat?
Really? What happened to the prosecution of those that were found guilty? What major impact has the SURE-P funds saved from the initial subsidy cut in 2012 had on the economy? What has happened to making the existing refineries functional and building new ones? Minister for economy(Iwaela) keeps talking about austerity measures when the salaries and allowances of out legislature and executive remains the same exuberant payments and fattening bank accounts

why are we like this? We are supposed to be smarter than this! Is subsidy illegal? Why not sanitise the subsidy regime and make sure money is released to only genuine importers? Why give money to thieves and come back to ask the masses to pay? Who controls the agencies responsible for the verification? How many oil producing nations don't subsidise their products? Why is the government acting saint now that money is dropping! If they had increased the refining capacity, we would have been making money from refined products by now! Why do you defend what is not defendable!

I don't think this will lead to an increase in the cost of fuel as some people are saying.
Crude oil prices have fallen, our cost of importing petroleum products will fall along with it, the cost of subsidisng those products have no choice but to fall too.

Guy you won't understand what's going on.
Let the subsidy be removed so there will be absolutely no excuse for looting or any corrupt practices in the govt system.

If you read well and understand more you will see that the money spent on this subsidy of a thing is enough to create jobs for a million people fairly.

And the masses will suffer for the govt inability to provide a functional refinery in the country??
The easiest thing a govt can do for the people is to make them enjoy what they have in abundance and in my opinion any govt who can't do that has failed and should go.

People who ask what the govt is doing about fighting corruption needs to understand that the best and sure way to do so is block all avenues that lead to corruption. Cutting fuel subsidy is a sure way to reduce corruption in that sector, it may hurt in the short run but eventually everything will balance out.
But as has been said the President must have to carry the labour unions and civil society organisations along in the implementation of this policy but I doubt the unions will see reasons for it and it will be 1st Jan 2012 all over again.

If i hear say "in the long run". The ones they've been removing, what are the effects we've seen in the society to the benefit of the masses?

Is this not the GEJ that caused an occupy Nigeria? Is he not the one that paid billions of $$ to cronies in the name of subsidy and increased subsidy 10x? If I did not know GEJ, looking at this picture I will think he suffers from Downs or Edward's syndrome. The word clueless falls short in describing this picture. This was a picture taken on his birthday yesterday, and the picture shows you that the leader of Nigeria is indeed clueless. Is this the person that wants to rule Nigeria beyond 2015 (that is if Nigeria still exists)? His face tells it all. Fellows be wise, desist from voting a retard in power!
