Nigerians, Lets Shun Religious Bigotry!! (the Naira Note Symbols) by ayukdaboss(m): 11:16pm On Nov 24, 2014
Lately, the symbols on the Naira Note has become more important than the value of the note itself with various religious bodies challenging every sign they see on it.

These are the 2 controversies I've read about:

1) The David Cross: Which one is the David Cross again How does the David Cross affect the value of the Naira? I'm a Christian..I've never ever heard about the David Cross and possibly many other Christians too so I'm surprised the Muslim body had enough time to research about the David cross when there are more important things for them to think about.

2) The Arabic Symbols: In as much as I have little reservations about this particular one, I'll want to ask us Nigerians, how has this affected the value of the Naira? When did you notice the Arabic symbols on the Naira? For me I noticed those Arabic symbols the day I read about it on Nairaland this Month and I just casually checked it. It doesn't mean I'm insensitive to issues concerning my country. It means as far as it has never been a big deal over 10 years now, it never will.

It's a shame Christian religious bodies/leaders were linking the Arabic symbols on the Naira with the Islamization of Nigeria

I'll urge us as Nigerians to DESIST from tribalism and religious bigotry even if our religious and political leaders encourage us to do so because it's going to lead us NO-WHERE as a country.

If we continue like this, there'll become a time where Muslims would prefer voting a "Cow" who is a Muslim than a Sane man who is a Christian and vice versa.

Nigerians, please lets shun bigotry for our own good.

At the highlighted, you poured scorn on Christian religious bodies/leaders but failed to do same to Muslim religious bodies/leaders. Do you think Christians are fools?

Whenever you hear from folks the statement "I am a Christian" before making a submission, it tells me more about the person.

Well you don't know me. Focus on the message. I castigated both religions equally so I seriously don't understand your point.

You don't need to tell me your religion before making a submission. That alone gives you away

Read this again carefully, you'll see exactly why I stated my religion. If you still don't get it, I can't help you.

I agree with you OP. I don't know Nigerian's Religious elites with their obsession over everything. The Arabic Language should no way depict "Islam". Arabic is a Language, Islam is a Religion. The Christians in the Middle East have their Bible written in Arabic because it is the Language they understand. Ignorance and Foolishness are two monsters that must be kicked out of our mentality.

@The David's Cross: What exactly is that? I honestly didn't notice anything like that, but assuming it is, how does that depict Zionism? Like I don't get the message. The Muslim Group that were heating the polity over non-Issue is pathetic and must be reprimanded. What kind of Gross Ignorance and foolishness is that? It is a big shame.

Back to the "Arabic" Inscription: Well, I understand that Northern Commoners understand Arabic more than English Language, but Arabic isn't our Official Language. It is time for our leaders in the North to ensure that every Northern Child is trained in English Language along with Arabic Language. We shouldn't beat the drum of war nor heat the polity over non-issues such as these. It would have been better for the Muslim Group to make a case for the inclusion of "Arabic" Language for easy identification by Majority North rather than tie it to Islam Religion.

Unfortunately it wasn't seen that way by the Muslim clerics, Why? Because of how we have been blinded by religious and tribalistic bigotry
Re: Nigerians, Lets Shun Religious Bigotry!! (the Naira Note Symbols) by nafiachi(m): 2:14am On Nov 25, 2014
Bro yes we all need to shun religious bigotry as in fact as Muslims we are to shun in thing that would create or cause harm to people.
But let's be clear about something, the Arabic writings (not symbol) has been in the Naira note forever, and it may have been included in the Naira because we in the north before amalgamation of this great country used the Arabic letters to communicate in hausa in fact just found out even in some part of the south west also did, it was common sense there was no ABC then, and that was what an average northerner could read, yes now we have ABC and most Northerners can at least.
But what the current regime is doing does not make any sense at all, what is a cross generally going to symbolise, Unity? No Christianity? Yes.
I believe they should have easily done what soludo did on the new 5, 10 and 20 Naira notes by representing the 3 major tribes on the Note, not some jewish inspired conspiracy, by the way are Jews Christians?

I'm a christian and I'm not a fool, neither do I think the op is. He's made a very valid point and the highlighted portions are quite rightly so. This whole arguments took their roots from christians (the political class likely) alleging a plan to Islamize the country pointing to those inscriptions as evidence. That to me is totally wrong!! No one ever had any qualms with them, no one ever rejected the notes because of the inscriptions, the inscriptions never diminished the value of the notes, so why the fuss. Now the whole thing is assuming a dangerous dimension.

Let us all observe some restraint and pull this country back from the brink of sectarian and religious strife. This is absolutely needless.

thank u! The arabic inscription is called ajami and does not depict anything islam. It was used to write for the majority of hausa who cudnt read or write in english , but understand and can read whatever is written in ajami(using arabic letters to write hausa language). What is written on the naira in arabic is hausa language. On the hundred naira note u have ; naira dari (wrttien using ajami) , which means 100. Our religious bodies should be kicked into extinction. Again , i blame those that think having that on our currency amounts to islamization and, that gave rise to this reaction.
