Within an hour after news broke that former Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice won his appeal to be reinstated to the NFL on Friday, ESPN published what they’re calling “Janay Rice’s story.” Per an editor’s note, it was compiled by ESPN’s Jemele Hill via a three-hour interview at the home of Janay Rice’s mother, Janet, on Nov. 5, as well as a follow-up phone interview.

The story comes in at more than 4,300 words, and Rice covers everything from when she first met Ray until the her husband was suspended indefinitely. It does not offer reaction to Friday’s appeal victory, although Rice made her sentiments clear in a tweet after she and her now reinstated NFL free agent husband heard the news.

Most poignantly, Rice recalls her view of what happened leading up to and in that now infamous elevator in Atlantic City, where video shows her then-fiance knocking her out then dragging her unconscious body into the hotel lobby. She explains:

“There was something different about that day. The two of us were just off, starting that morning. I was annoyed because it was Valentine’s Day and Ray and one of his friends had planned a group trip to Atlantic City, while I had wanted to do something with just the two of us.

“I was going to surprise Ray at the hotel with a couples massage, but the manager spoiled the surprise by calling Ray to confirm the time, instead of checking with me. From that moment on I was annoyed with everything, but I continued to act as if I was fine. We weren’t even in Atlantic City yet and nothing seemed to be going right.”

Rice explains she and her husband met up with two other couples and “shared two to three bottles of liquor.” When the other couples went to bed, she and Rice stayed up, arguing.

“We were drunk and tired and while I know that some people may find it hard to believe, none of the six of us can remember exactly what Ray and I were arguing about,” Janay Rice recalls. “It was that insignificant.”

The tension grew from there. She says:

“As we were arguing, he was on his phone and not looking at me. I went to reach for his phone, and when he grabbed it back, he spit at me and I slapped him.

“We got into the elevator and what happened inside is still foggy to me. The only thing I know — and I can’t even say I ‘remember’ because I only know from what Ray has told me — is that I slapped him again and then he hit me. I remember nothing else from inside the elevator.

“The next thing I do recall is being in the casino lobby, surrounded by cops.”

The two ended up arrested and in police custody. She recalls her husband apologizing and telling her, “It’s going to be okay.” Janay Rice remembers being angry, however, throughout the whole six hours the two spent in the police station and in the car ride home.

Janay Rice continuously underlines throughout her story that Ray Rice had never treated her poorly before; she also said he “accepted responsibility from the moment” they left the police station. But just as she thought the two could put the situation behind them, her husband warned her “We’ve got to get ready for this to be on the ticker.”

Rice talks of seeing the first video, which was released on Feb. 19 and showed her then-fiance dragging her from the elevator.

“I was sick to my stomach,” she said. “I just broke down in tears.” She said Ray was bothered, as well. She recalls:

“The video didn’t make me rethink our relationship, but I did want more of an explanation from him. I asked him why he left me on the floor like that. I asked him how he felt when he saw that I was unconscious. He told me he was in shock. I asked him what happened when we got out of the elevator. He told me he was terrified because security was there. I asked him how he felt seeing me like that. He said he was thinking, ‘What did I just do?’ I didn’t watch the video again.”

The story continues. She tells about how she and Ray decided to marry despite the incident; how she won’t apologize for apologizing for what she says was her role in the incident, despite criticism; and how she was optimistic after she and her now-husband first met with the NFL to discuss the situation — which she underlines was told truthfully from the beginning.

“I wasn’t surprised when Commissioner [Roger] Goodell suspended Ray for two games. In fact, I expected it,” she says. “It was somewhat consistent with how he disciplined other players. … I didn’t think anything else was going to happen.”

We all know what happened next. Video of the punch came out on Sept. 8, and suddenly the incident Rice said she thought she had put behind her came roaring back.

“I was extremely surprised and angry that the Ravens released him, because they know him,” she said. “They were our family, but I felt like the Ravens completely disregarded the past six years with him.”

More poignantly, Rice says she’s upset at having to continue to defend her marriage and herself.

“I still find it hard to accept being called a ‘victim.’ I know there are so many different opinions out there about me — that I’m weak, that I’m making excuses and covering up abuse — and that some people question my motives for staying with Ray,” she said. “However, I’m a strong woman and I come from a strong family. Never in my life have I seen abuse, nor have I seen any woman in my family physically abused.”

So happy for this brother, and hopefully he'll learn from this, and start to treat that woman like a queen. Good woman right there, and despite their story being hijacked by the media and feminazis, she stood by him. Got married to him. And didn't allow them destroy another brother's young career.

I can't wait for Ray Rice to hit the field, looking fresh and healthy, and start pounding again. Get the gwop!

Hopefully, Adrian Peterson will be reinstated soon as well.

Ben E King - Stand by me. grin

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we'll see
No I won't be afraid
Oh, I won't be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

So darling, darling
Stand by me, oh stand by me
Oh stand, stand by

Yup. All the reasonable people that watched the video and saw the other thread already knew this.....

Good for him for winning his appeal. That was the right outcome I think.

He didn't pummel her. They were both drunk, and it was a vicious left hook that hit her. Fatal but he didn't beat her to a pulp.

However, he took responsibility immediately after that. Hey, we all make mistakes, when emotions are running high, especially with booze involved. And if we start judging everyone on this planet, based on the worst things they have done, captured on hidden cameras, we'll open the Pandora's box that will consume the whole planet.

At the end of the, he accepted full responsibility for what he did (even before the video came out), showed remorse, apologised to his girl, and married her. His chic understood what was at stake, and stood by her man from the get-go.

Lesson: don't ever let outsiders/public get involved in ya marriage/relationship. Lool

I just knew him getting out of gaol would make your day Shymex cheesy

But that aside, abeg look at the bolded words above. Vicious left hook? Fatal (blow)? Does that sound normal? As an adult male, he should know better. Not that I condone violence of any kind but if it were a duel between him and a fellow guy, then yeah, maybe. But to unleash all that on a woman? Please. It aptly demonstrates his low level of intelligence. A man who acts (with his fists) first then thinks (and apologizes) later.

Of course he'll apologize. What other choice did he have knowing his entire career was at stake?

It's not even a question of outsiders getting involved in their marriage / relationship. That involvement stems from him being a celebrity, so of course, people would want to know the ins and outs of his life.

That aside, it's about principle and I think she (as an abuse victim) had her dubious reasons for marrying him. Money? A big possibility. But then again, it's quite complex with victims of abuse. It's not uncommon for such a person to defend with their life, the abuser and give all sort of reasons for doing so, even blaming themselves.

Why was she so upset after watching the video?

Abeg they deserve each other. Awful couple.

Why do people drink to the point that they have no control over themselves and then they blame the drink undecided
The drink was sitting jeje in its bottle. If you cant control yourself after drinking, then its common sense not to drink so much or not drink at all.

Lol, I don't support what he did. However, I was just correcting the notion that he beat her to a pulp. It was a vicious left hook by a more powerful man, and we all know what happened. Also, has he got a history of domestic violence or any other troubles with the law? Absolutely not. So, we have to treat this as an isolated case induced by intoxication by the both of them. Evidently, he deserves a second chance and I hope he doesn't mess it up.

I think one thing we all always forget about sports megastars is that: they are human beings like us with special talents working a normal job, that pays big. They are flawed just like everyone one of us - and their career span is very short (a year to like 15 years max) unlike most of us. And they always tend to sustain physical injuries that they will carry for the rest of their lives, unlike most of us. So with the big pay, it involves a lot of sacrifices most of us don't make. So we need to treat them as flawed people, not role models. Enjoy the entertainment they provide with their unique talents - leave their private lives alone, and only hold them responsible when they commit crimes against the society.

However, we live in an age where the media likes to make examples out of flawed folks who don't owe the society anything. Just to distract us from the real folks who owe the society and should have the searchlight beamed on them 24/7. The government, the banksters, plutocrats, utterly corrupt politicians, oligarchs, police force etc.. Those are folks they should be chasing everywhere.

Regardless, I don't think she stayed for the money. If she wanted money that will set her up for a lifetime - she would have sued him for his last penny by claiming head injuries. The video evidence is there. And they have a kid together - that is child support and spousal support for the next 18 years. However, she isn't a gold digger and she never saw herself as a victim like she said. She knows him better than everyone else cos they are only two parties in the relationship - not the public looking in from the outside.

Like she also said: it is a case of opportunists trying to destroy something they know nothing about. And milk it for selfish reasons. I respect that - she is a rider. Hopefully, he will learn from this and treat that woman right. He owes her a lot.

If a woman decides to forgive a husband that was violent towards her, then that is her choice.

Where I always have a problem is when people start thinking the said woman is now a role model for women to look up to. She survived but another woman might not survive. Most men that kill their spouse from domestic violence did not plan to kill her, it usually just happens. That is why I never encourage any body to stay with a violent person. The next punch could kill.

I don't think he is a violent guy. Bar this isolated case, he is actually one of better behaved guys in the NFL.

Hopefully, he got the message, and won't touch the good woman next time.

The killers are nutters and serial offenders who take pleasure in beating their wives, like cowards. And also, women need to stop provoking domestic violence.

Er, I don't think he will be able to join any team this season, anyway. The Ravens have a beast in Forsett right now.

Only Colts and Panthers probably need a running again. But I doubt the Colts would want to deal with controversy. As for the Panthers, I don't think they have cap space. The only way is to cut one player and add him on veteran min.

And the next draft is loaded with mad RBs. I just hope someone picks him up soon.

What kind of man beats a woman the way he did and spits on her just cause she snatched ur phone.. Jany is even denying she couldn't remember what they were arguing about. Ray rice is an animal.. Janay and ray should better stop hiding under the umbrella of the sentence; "We ve given our life to Christ". Who do they think they are deceiving . But he did beat her to a pulp, Shymex. He knocked her out cold. She so easily could have died from the blow.

You don't have to physically pummel someone several times till they collapse in a heap at your feet for that action to then qualify as "beating the person to a pulp". His one, carefully delivered, vicious blow on her produced the same effect - knocking her out stone cold.

Re: you point about him not having any history of domestic violence, how do you know that for sure? This is one case of his we get to see because he had no control over it. His animalistic behaviour was caught on camera in a public place. He obviously is the one in control of that relationship. How does anyone other than those two, know that he doesn't beat her regularly at home? And she keeps schtum about it because of his career and what she thinks she stands to gain from the relationship with him?

Even if he's never done it before (highly doubtful from watching that babaric video footage), there's always a first time isn't there? You've got to start from somewhere.

SirShymex:

Not possible.

A public figure like him gets his money from the publicity generated. And if people are that much interested in you to the point that you're a media mega star, it's only natural that the paying public will want to know everything about you. Down to the colour of your bodily waste. (Okay, an extreme example but you get what I'm saying...)

Anyway, as a public figure, you have to be extra careful about the image and perception you portray about yourself. If a person chooses to live a very public life, then he or she has to embrace both the good and bad that come along with it - which incidentally include and invasion of their private lives. Young, impressionable kids look up to them as their role model, so they do have that responsibility to project an image of being whiter than snow. Unpalatable? Yes. Avoidable? No. They need that publicity. Unless of course, they want to be forgotten.

SirShymex:
However, we live in an age where the media likes to make examples out of flawed folks who don't owe the society anything. Be that as it may, it doesn't absolve him from acting the part of a good role model rather than an uncontrollable beast.

SirShymex:

She's got her very own crazy reasons for wanting to be with him. She shouldn't have wept / been so upset when showed the video footage of what he did to her after she lost consciousness in the lift. Even then, he certainly didn't act like a remorseful bloke.
