BlackBaron:
Stealing and corruption can be used interchangeably within the right context.

Corruption can have different instances; stealing from the poor(salaries, money for hospitals, roads e.g), skimming, gain unfair advantage, fraud, bribery et al.

This government needs to put a leash on this guy because he is fighting a losing corner the more he utters words.

This one below proves that both can be the same under a given context, stealing is described in words that read like official corruption.

STEALING

"3. To get or take secretly or artfully:
cued from oxford dictionary"

Anyway Jona should come out to admit which one of them his people are guilty of.

Let make this clear can you define stealing explicitly as corruption or the other way round is corruption stealing?

We argue without making any meaning of what we are arguing about.
Please can you put the "meaning" into the "argument"!

Those criticising the president are the very people trivialising stealing and the seriousness of what goes on in Nigeria

Stealing is not corruption

Public officials diverting public money are thieves, that's the point the president is making

The most painful part of this is that Jonathan can't risk sacking any of them now no matter the magnitude of their goof. Doyin did it with the Jesus comparism, and now this. Abati did it by showcasing Kwankwaso's achievements as his principal's and bringing up the wikileaks's stuff, the backlash of which the presidency is suffering now. Have forgotten Reno's contribution. Sack any of them now and it will be all too clear the presidency is in disarray and the opposition is sure to make the most of it politically.

Frankly, sometimes I feel some pity for the President. cheesy

Ps: where is my brother Firefire?? Would like to hear his opinion about this. Lol.

And it makes sense for "the clueless one" to give approval for "mere stealing" because "it is not corruption"?

Okay, seriously, I don't understand what some posters on this thread are on about......clearly, you've chosen to misunderstand him this time.

If you must fight your political opponent verbally, then please do so objectively.

Corruption is corruption.
Stealing is a corrupt act.

Both are bad and shouldn't be encouraged in any form or manner, capische?

Stealing anything meant for the public is corruption. When Mr president said "most things people call corruption is stealing", the stolen things he was referring to was public fund and property.

Stealing/theft has a definition in law as the taking of a thing with the intent of permanently depriving it's owner of its use. Stealing/theft is a corrupt act under almost every moral, religious and legal system. Let's not beat around the bush, stealing is just one part of what can accurately be described as acts of corruption.

In the real sense of the word "some" forms of stealing can qualify as corruption. Some cant.

E.g. A public officer diverting public funds to private accounts qualify as both stealing and corruption

A public officer using his office to ease the process of getting his relative employed qualifies as corruption but that's not necessarily stealing

But an armed robber waiting for vehicles with guns and robbing people is pure stealing but that is not corruption.

The essence of the word corrupt or corruption assumes some level of responsibility and dignity that is being tarnished or adulterated due to some malpractices. Nobody looks up to a thief with some dignity or expect them to operate on a higher moral pedestal that is why it is out of place to describe a thief with the word corrupt.pls stop being silly , theft goes with decadences in moral , sign of corruption. It is an example or type.... Why would one in the first instance say stealing which is crime isn't corruption..

Hence those who try to distinguish between the word stealing and corruption are not in anyway trivialising corruption. If anything they are emphasizing the enormity of what is going on in public offices in Nigeria when they try to draw a distinction between stealing and corruption. They are arguing that the seriousness of siphoning public funds into private accounts gets downplayed with the word corruption when in truth what is happening is outright stealing.

In 2006 Nuhu Ribadu made a similar argument about Sani Yerima of Zamfara State while accusing Governors of Corruption. In the case of Zamfara he emphasized that what is going on there is outright stealing without the involvement of any 3rd parties because in his words Sani Yerima was simply diverting State funds directly from State Accounts to private accounts. He is not even disguising it by setting up contactors with fronts like you currently have in Lagos where Tinubu's proxy companies do all sorts of work for the Lagos State Government and inflating cost without being subject to competition.

So eventhough in terms of technicalities of English language "Stealing is not corruption" may be wrong. I understand the sentiments behind the argument. There is some truth in it.
What goes on in public offices in Nigeria is stealing but in most developed countries you have corruption in public offices!
Re: Doyin Okupe Embarrasses GEJ On Twitter by tuborme: 7:30pm On Dec 19, 2014
I have read with deep hearts the comments being made by nigerians online that the president said that stealing is not corruption. Read this:

Stealing is not and will not be thesame thing as corruption. It was based on this precept that the administration of Obasanjo setup the ICPC to fight corruption and EFCC to fight theft. A corrupt officer may not steal but can go ahead and accept bribe to influence the outcome of his job or use his influence to get a job for his brother or cronies without touching public funds. A thief will use his office to siphon money from the public purse and may not use his office to help his cronies get job placements or contracts.

The president was very correct when he tried to seperate stealing from corruption. Let our education help us.

I don't understand all this hullaballoo, stealing and corruption have different definition and could be used as applicable.

Don't forget English is not our mother's tongue, hence any definition could be appropriate.

Stealing is taking (another person's property) without permission or legal right and without intending to return it. Whereas

Corruption is dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.

All the two elements above is presently present in Nigeria political landscape and between all political parties.
