Deutsche Welle, the German equivalent to the BBC, has published a damning OpEd piece on the federal government's continuing failure to deal with the terrible situation in the north east. Jonathan was singled out for his failure to visit Chibok, to comment on the several more recent attacks and his apparent lack of sympathy for the suffering people there who must have log realized that no government help is coming. Elections are coming soon so some poor people being murdered, kidnapped and räped are not a priority.

The Nigerian army was also not spared for their repeated failures and their recent sentencing of 54 soldiers to death for alleged mutiny.

As harsh as the article is, there isn't much I can say to defend Nigeria. Useless government or no, we should all be ashamed.

Opinion: Nigerian abductions a disgrace
The militant Islamist Boko Haram has struck once, kidnapping and killing civilians. A disgrace - and not just for Nigeria - thinks Daniel Pelz

Suspected Boko Haram militants abducted 185 women and children in an attack on a village in north-eastern Nigeria. It took place not far from Chibok, where the group seized more than 240 girls at a school in April. Eight months later, only a handful of the girls have managed to escape. Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan has declined to comment, remaining as tight-lipped as ever. Jonathan has not visited Chibok, nor has he responded to the most recent attacks.

It is unbelievable. Jonathan and his government do not even have a few words of consolation for the families of the 185 abducted women and children, let alone any plan of action. Boko Haram,on the other hand, is free to attack and terrorize the people of northern Nigeria. Abductions by suspected Boko Haram fighters are currently occurring on a weekly basis. In October alone, 70 people were kidnapped. More than 13,000 people have lost their lives since the start of the insurgency in 2009.

Hardly anything is being done to stop the group. Nigeria's poorly paid and ill-equipped soldiers are no match for Boko Haram. Morale in the Nigerian army is at a low ebb. A court martial has just sentenced 54 soldiers to death for mutiny. They allegedly refused to participate in an operation against the militants.

The fate of the people of northern Nigeria seems to be of little interest to the elite in the capital Abuja, whose chief concern is maintaining their grip on power. Nigeria is due hold a general election in February 2015. President Jonathan hopes to be re-elected and the opposition of course wishes to unseat him. So nobody really has the time to deal with Boko Haram. And while the politicians forge alliances, scheme against their opponents and mobilize their voters, the insurgency in northern Nigeria drags on. There are evidently too few votes to be won in the poor, sparsely populated region.

The international response to the crisis is hardly any better. When the Chibok girls were abducted, prominent personalities like Michelle Obama and Angelina Jolie joined campaigners in their online plea to bring back the girls. Yet that was all that happened. While many governments promised to support Nigeria in their fight against Boko Haram, little of that help actually materialized. The international community failed to call on Nigeria's government to take more responsibility for the lives of its citizens. Economic interests once again outweigh the fate of the residents of a remote region, which most people cannot even find on a map.

I feel sorry for with the people of northern Nigeria. They have to deal with the daily threat of terror, abductions, attacks and killings. But unlike their government, they have not remained inactive. Hundreds have joined vigilante groups to protect their towns and villages. They have realized that they have to help themselves as nobody else will help them.

more of this from the international community please!...
I never wanted Buhari to rule our great nation... but right now, he would be a better alternative, the incumbent seems incapable!, Nigeria has being disgraced, everyone thinks Nigerians are just like their president. the Jonathan administration is clueless, discombobulated, the president is incompetent, maybe this whole blind eye to pressing matters by him is intentional or not i cant even say, but his faults, mis-judgments, shortcomings and inability to make the right decisions are egregious and its a trend! and to think he has a PhD rubbishes the Nigerian educational system, Even a simpleton would do things differently - give me a five year old pls!
Our economy is sinking like a 700 pound metal resting on a muddy quicksand, the state of security is a record low (our military has metamorphosed into a shadow of its former self; just imagine, Nigerian soldiers running from battle?, corruption has spiraled, we are being disgraced by the international community (read foreign news and blogs!!!) ; technically we are soap-opera to them, a laughing stock... and u think GEJ is still the man?
I hate talking about my President this way, but let us face it, our president lacks basic leadership qualities, as if that is not enough, he crowned this with a clueless approach, we cant just keep pretending everything is okay, no, its not! the man we have in the driving sit of our national affairs is driving us into doom.... lets be frank, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is clueless and he is not the right man for Nigeria.
Lets be human beings, because the insurgency in northern Nigeria isn't affecting our families dont mean we should turn a blind eye, how are we better than the Northerners if we choose to ignore the bloodsheds based on some vendetta we have against the north?
Some say; 'bokoharam is just a way the north is trying to get power back to the north, they are just trying to frustrate his rule' if thats true (which i doubt, the Northerners are the ones dying), why is he the president if he cant hold the responsible accountable!? he is the Commander in chief! how has he lived up to that? has he prosecuted anyone? has he sacked anyone? what boldstep has he made that says 'hey! i am the president!' no one should be able to make a country ungovernable for a President that knows what he is doing, he is the president! lets call a spade a spade, he cant rule this country, he has failed, its his sixth year for God sake, why give him another four? so he could finish what he started? trust me BH is growing and growing fast and give them two more years of an indecisive government like GEJ's and we would NEVER be able to defeat them, mark my words.
We are Nigerians, atleast for now, that is what we are, and take it or leave it, it might seem so far away now, but sooner or later it would come knocking at your door, someone u love might be next.. WE CANT AFFORD THE LUXURY OF ANOTHER FOUR YEARS FROM THIS MAN.. NOOOO! WE THE YOUTHS SHOULD PLS RISE UP AND BE RATIONAL, IF THE OLD GEEZERS IN POWER WOULD PLAY WITH OUR FUTURE, LETS KICK EM OUT, THEY WOULD ALL DIE ONE DAY AND WE WOULD BE LEFT TO REPAIR THE FAILED NATION.
Beggars are not choosers, Lets give another person a chance, i don't care if its an Abacha reincarnation, as long as its democracy! we need a change of government!
Give Me Anything But Jonathan.

I feel really sorry for what the people of the North have been subjected to but I'm very positive It's gonna be a thing of the past very soon when Jonathan and Shekau become cell mates.

. what a pity, Nigeria has now become like Pakistan.......I wanted to vote for Jonathan but deep inside of me I know he has nothing good to offer, but now I have begin to support GMB. i want a government that will value our defense sector because, Bahuri is a retired general, so he knows how it feels to be in the field, he knows what those in the field needs and how it hurts to loose comrades on daily basis, and am expecting nothing else from him than to restore the lost glory of our defence sector and other sectors will be right because when a country is peaceful and safe then it begins to develop, investors will be attracted and respect will begin to come, besides WHAT ELSE CAN BE GREATER THAN THE SAFETY OF NIGERIANS.

They can write ever they like but if they care about us they should assist with lethal weapons, than writing rubbish with their media to undermine the country, the apc e-fools will see it and rejoice as point but the country belong to us all no one can escape any bad tag given to us. Instead to rally around and assist the sitting president they see it as a medium to mock him. If the country collapse today all of us will die no one will be xcluded so better join hands and make the country better. Not coming here to shout change most of y'all houses are in disarray you come to NL to shout change. Hypocrits
