They start from Class 1, Class 2, then enter Standard 1 to Standard 6.

Meanwhile, the Standard System was phased out in 1963 and Elementary was introduced in 1964.
The academic year also was January to December.

I believe his failures in the past should not be tied to his present, only and only if he does well to show he had improved from his past Failures. Every point, every thread opened on GEJ's academic life proves one thing, that he actually went to school unlike some old and should be retired general. I doesn't matter if one spent 6 or 10 years in the primary school, what matters most is what grade he comes out with and what he becomes later in life. Jonathan may have spent 8 years in the primary school for reasons we don't know yet but has achieved beyond what those like egift who spent 4 years can ever acheive in their entire life time.
The op egift as dumb as he is forgot that many factors may account for a person's prolonged stay in school beyond just being dull. Factors such as poverty, illness, pupil teacher relationship (I'm a victim of this),etc. Why Jonathan spent 8 years in primary school we may not know now but a dull student couldn't have one ahead to obtain a doctorate degree which in his clime is no mean feat.

Abraham Lincoln did not go to law school.

In America, most lawyers in the 19th century did not go to law school. They ''read'' for the law i.e...they apprenticed themselves to a lawyer, and read his books(or in Lincoln's case, read on their own)....and after several years, they wrote their state's bar exam, and if they passed, they became lawyers.

(A similar practice existed for doctors....a doc apprenticed himself to a senior doctor....learned all he needed to know...then wrote the exams and became a doctor. Common in England up to the 19th century.).

There were a few law schools....but most of them were made up of one law prof who would give a lecture that was meant to supplement what the young apprentice lawyers were learning.

Of course, the practice declined towards the end of the 19th century....as law schools became more common.
