Well, good to know. I am going to get 40 Itsekiri girls pregnant thereby fully yorubanize the half-yorubas. Then I will proceed to assign 40 of my Yoruba cousins to do the same so that we can get back fully our lost tribe. Holla at moi. I'm on a mission.

Onuwaje why do some itshekiri people including u like removing yoruba influence from our heritage. It annoys the hell out of me. Most educated yorubas see us as one. I feel more comfortable amongst yorubas than among urhobo, ijaw or anybody so what is u people's stress?. angry

Anyway I really don't have anything good to say about itshekiri.. I wouldn't want my enemy to face what I have faced from my dad's tribes men. So I am glued to my mums people. Ekiti.......

For those who want to knw about the itsekiri people

The Itsekiri' (also called the, Isekiri, Itsekri or Ishekiri or Itsekhiri) are an ethnic group of Nigeria's Niger Delta area, Delta State.[1] The Itsekiri presently number under a million people and live mainly in the Warri South, Warri North and Warri South West local government districts of Delta State on the Atlantic Coast of Nigeria. Significant communities of Itsekiris can be found in parts of Edo and Ondo states and in various other Nigerian cities including Lagos, Sapele, Benin City, Port Harcourt and Abuja. Many people of Itsekiri descent also reside in the United Kingdom, the USA and Canada. The Itsekiris traditionally refer to their land as the Kingdom of Warri or 'Iwerre' as its proper name – which is geographically contiguous to the area covered by the three Warri local government districts. The area is a key centre of Nigeria's crude oil and natural gas production and petroleum refining and the main town Warri (a multi-ethnic metropolis) forms the industrial and commercial nucleus of the Delta State region.

The Itsekiri are a people of very mixed ethnic origins who speak a language very closely related to the Yoruba language of South Western Nigeria [1] but which has also been significantly influenced by other languages particularly Portuguese, Edo (Benin), English. Although linguistically related to the Yoruba ethnic group, however, through centuries of intermingling modern day Itsekiris are of very mixed ethnic origins (primarily of Yoruba (Ijebu, Ilaje,Ondo and Owo), Edo, Urhobo, Ijo, Anglo-Scottish and Portuguese descent) and are today mainly Christian (Protestant and Roman Catholic) by religion. Thus having had six centuries of direct cultural exposure to Western Christianity and other African influences, contemporary Itsekiri language and culture has successfully evolved into a hybrid of the many cultures that have influenced its development. Similarly owing to the complex genetic mix of most Itsekiris over the centuries, many individuals self-identifying as Itsekiri would usually be a complex mix of any of the aforementioned ethnic and racial groups.

In the 15th century, the early Itsekiris adopted a prince (Ginuwa) from the Kingdom of Benin as a monarch, and quickly coalesced into a kingdom under his rule.

The Itsekiri, though a minority group within Nigeria, are considered to be a highly educated[citation needed] and affluent ethnic group[citation needed] with a very high rate of literacy[citation needed] and a rich cultural heritage .[citation needed] The Itsekiris have one of the oldest histories of western education in West Africa,[citation needed] and are noted for producing one of its earliest university graduates – the Itsekiri king Olu Antonio Dom Domingo[4] a 17th-century graduate of Coimbra University in Portugal. Today, many Itsekiris can be found working in the professions[citation needed] particularly medicine,[citation needed] law[citation needed] and the academic professions[citation needed] and in business,[citation needed] trade[citation needed] and industry[citation needed] and were among the pioneers that led the development of the professions in Nigeria during the early-to-mid 20th century

Whilst genetically, the Itsekiris are a complex mixture of the many different ethnicities and races that have settled in their area, however, the Itsekiri language is very closely related to the south-eastern and Ilaje Yoruba dialects and to the Igala.[8] It has also been influenced significantly by the Bini, Portuguese and English languages due to centuries of interaction with people from those nations. However, it remains a key branch of the Yoruboid family[9] of languages even retaining archaic or lost elements of the proto Yoruba language due to its relative isolation in the Niger-Delta where it developed away from the main cluster of Yoruba language dialects. Unlike nearly all key Nigerian Languages, the Itsekiri language does not have dialects and is uniformly spoken with little or no variance in pronunciation apart from the use of 'ch' for the regular 'ts' (sh) in the pronunciation of some individual Itsekiris, e.g. Chekiri instead of the standard Shekiri but these are individual pronunciation traits rather than dialectal differences. This may be a relic of past dialectal differences. The English language continues to exert a strong influence on the Itsekiri language both in influencing its development and in its widespread usage as a first language amongst the younger generation. Modern standard Yoruba (the variety spoken in Lagos) also appears to be influencing the Itsekiri language partly due to the similarity between both languages and the ease of absorbing colloquial Yoruba terms by the large Itsekiri population living in Western Nigerian cities. Itsekiri is now taught in local schools up to university degree level in Nigeria.

There are a number of semi-autonomous Itsekiri communities such as Ugborodo whose history predates the 15th-century establishment of the Warri Kingdom. The Ugborodo community claims direct descent from the Ijebu a major Yoruba sub-ethnic group[

Itsekiri, also called Jekri, Isekiri, or Ishekiri,  ethnic group inhabiting the westernmost part of the Niger River delta of extreme southern Nigeria. The Itsekiri make up an appreciable proportion of the modern towns of Sapele, Warri, Burutu, and Forcados. They speak a Yoruboid language of the Benue-Congo branch of Niger-Congo languages and share elements of culture with the Yoruba, Edo, Urhobo, and Ijo through a variety of contacts.

The Itsekiri live on the coast in an area of extensive mangrove swamps and freshwater wetlands. They are primarily fishermen and have employed traps, fences, and nets, as well as rod-and-line techniques. Women make mats and baskets from reeds and palm materials. Silversmithing has died out, and blacksmithing has declined.

Myths of origin establish that Ginuwa, the Itsekiri founder and first olu (king), was originally a prince of Benin, so that subsequent kings are descendants of the oba of Benin. Lesser chiefs once met as a council and advised the olu. Chieftaincy is being redefined in conformity with modern government, and some settlements do not participate in chieftaincy at all.

Within settlements adult males trace patrilineal descent from settlement founders. In broader context, the Itsekiri claim affiliation to groups of kin by descent in both male and female lines. Itsekiri men often take wives from neighbouring peoples, where girls unrelated to prospective husbands can more easily be found.

Living on the coast, the Itsekiri encountered Europeans before groups farther inland did. The Portuguese during the 15th century were the first to make contact, and as a result the Itsekiri established a reputation as great traders and middlemen by supplying European manufactured goods to inland peoples in exchange for slaves and palm oil from the interior. The British colonial administration eventually broke their trade monopoly in the 1890s, however, and the flourishing Itsekiri economy went into decline.

In traditional Itsekiri religion, Oritse is the supreme deity and creator of the world. Among the other deities are Umale Okun, god of the sea, and Ogun, god of iron and war. Divination may be accomplished by men skilled in consulting the Ifa oracle, and ceremonies are performed to the ancestors on various occasions.

In the 1980s the Niger River delta area inhabited by the Itsekiri was noted as a major centre of petroleum production in Nigeria. At the turn of the 21st century, the region surrounding the town of Warri was the scene of ethnic strife among Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Ijo.

Let me let you in on some facts now as a qualified historian. Small groups often trace their origins to to great empires by which they are colonized or with which they have the remotest of interactions. it does not mean they are related. Look at all the groups around you. to whom of them do you have serious linguistic affinity? Non is the answer. Most of your words you share with Bini are either royal or religious. And such interaction with Bini is not peculiar to you. Many groups in Ondo state had such interactions and they still share Royal or religious culture with Bini today. The Akures, and Ondo as well as some Ilajes to mention a few have the same culture. The only thing it proves is the extent of Bini's influence during the peak of the empire, nothing more. Of course every group is free to define its own identity, I am just trying to let you know that you are not really different culturally or historically than most groups under the Yoruba classification of languages. But you are who you think you are.
