Enyimba Held By Dream Team

Dream Team missed the chance to put the pressure on the Flying Eagles as they forced Enyimba to a 1-1 draw at the Abuja National Stadium.

The match which ended all square was thrilling and entertaining from the blast of whistle.

For both sides, there was disappointment at the failure to fashion a victory and the casting aside of two points that won't put the Nigeria U20 team under pressure.

Enyimba were primed for the three points following Andrew Abologu's first-half opener.

But the U23 boys struck back eleven minutes after half-time as Jonathan Osondu profited from Moses Ocheje's error to levelled matters .

Fatai Amoo's side enjoyed the better of the play after the equaliser, but were unable to find a crucial winner.

The Nigeria U23 team started well as Christopher Madaki fired a 30-metre shot which was saved by Ocheje, while Abalogu was unable to connect a wayward cross from Chinonso Okonkwo.

Ebenezer Odeyemi who was the lone man upfront for Enyimba offered the physical ingredient that his team wanted.

Bayelsa Football Academy product Newman Doumbra threatened the People's Elephants defence line with his industry and direct approach to the game.

Enyimba went in front after a team move from midfield.

Abalogu demonstrated supreme confidence to dink Odeyemi's assist to the net and hand his side the lead.

As both teams struggled to defend the end-to-end nature of the contest continued, Ocheje produced a fine save from Yahaya Adamu with a header in the 38th minute.

The Dream Team VI deservedly levelled eleven minutes after the break as Ocheje surprisingly failed to deal with a back pass and the lurking Osondu was at the right place to power his effort into the unguarded goal.

The decisive goal never came, though, with both teams earning a point apiece.

NFF Proud Of U20s and U23s At Super 6

Director of competitions at the Nigeria Football Federation, Mohamed Sanusi says the NFF are so far impressed with the performances of the national teams involved in the ongoing Super 6 tournament in Abuja.

The national U23 team – the Dream Team VI; and the national U20 team – the Flying Eagles are both featuring in the mini-tournament and have had impressive s=outings thus far, with the Flying Eagles being the most impressive with three wins from three.

Both teams are scheduled to meet in the grand finale on Sunday, and Sanusi says they couldn’t be prouder.

“We are very proud of our teams in the Super 6, as they have done well thus far in the competition, especially the Flying Eagles.

“It’s not easy playing against the top teams in the country but so far both the U23 and the U20 teams have shown they are capable and hopefully one of them will win it,” he says.

The Dream Team have won two and drew one of their first three games, while the Flying Eagles have a 100% record, winning all of their three games.

But Sanusi, however, says the most important thing is for the players to get into a competitive mode ahead of the events.

“In as much as we want them to win, the most important thing is to get the teams prepared for their events as the U23 will play qualifiers for the All Africa Games and the U20 will play at the Africa Youth Championship.”

Dream Team Receives A Boost

The Dream Team VI are taking lightly, their game against the Flying Eagles on Sunday in the last fixture of the Super 6 as SL10.ng has confirmed that some players from the team that defeated the Tunisian U23’s 3-0 last Wednesday will be drafted in to the Super 6 team.

The Dream Team was divided into two, with one team playing two friendly games in Tunisia and the second playing at the Super 6 tournament in Abuja, SL10.ng can reveal that the ‘Super 6 Dream Team’ will receive a major boost with the inclusion of some of the players that travelled to Tunis.

The team that played in Tunisia, led by Samson Siasia is believed to be stronger, and parades the best players of the lot, while the other team is led by Fatai Amao.

But despite the inclusion of some players from the team that travelled to Tunisia, SL10.ng has also learnt that assistant coach, Fatai Amao will still remain in charge, while Samson Siasia will watch from the stand.

The U23’s are currently second on the log behind the Flying Eagles with 8 points, and will not win the mini-tournament even if they beat the U20’s as the Flying Eagles have an unassailable 12 points.

Dream Team call up Obiozor, Sokari

Dream Team VI coach Samson Siasia has called up Pillars striker Christian Obiozor and Kingsley Sokari from Enyimba.

According to coach Siasia, he was impressed by what these players showed during the just concluded Super 4 in Abuja and believes they will add quality to his team.

"I have always said this team is work in progress, and as such any player who has shown that he can add value to the team will sure be invited to the team, the intention of the technical crew is to build a team Nigerians will be proud of," Siasia said.

"For now one of our greatest challenge is from players whose clubs are involved in continental engagements, we have barely 18 days to our first game, and our clubs in the continent also have crucial first round games almost the same time, so it will cause distractions for us, but we have to balance things, for just as we need these players, so also their clubs need their services."

The U23 team coach then appealed to the clubs to show some level of understanding so that there will be no conflict of interests.

The Nigeria Olympic team will take on Gabon in Libreville at the end of the month in a 2015 All Africa Games qualifier.

Siasia: Dream Team Is Ready

Dream Team VI coach, Samson Siasia has told sl10.ng that his team is ready for the challenge from their Gabonese counterparts when they face off for the All Africa Games qualifiers.

The Nigerian U23 side takes on the Gabonese U23’s in Libreville on February 20, in the first leg of the first round of qualifiers for the 2015 All Africa Games, and Siasia believes his team is ready for the challenge, with over a week to spare.

“We are ready now, the boys have been responding positively and we are impressed with how far they’ve come in a very short space of time.

“Of course we still have to keep training and ensure we get better before the game, but if it were to be today, I would say we are ready and up for it,” he told sl10.ng.

Gabon are champions of the Africa U23 championship, which serves as qualifiers for the Olympic Games and despite declaring their state of readiness, Siasia says he knows better not to underrate their opponents.

“We know how good they are and we must respect them. We cannot underrate any of our opponents, we just have to focus on our training and how we can get better.”

Arsenal Give Conditions For Release Of Iwobi

English Premier League club Arsenal have stated they will release their Under 21 skipper Alex Iwobi for international duty with Nigeria's Olympic National Team as long as the invitation comes through the right channel.

The All African Games qualifier against Gabon scheduled to take place on February 20 is outside Fifa's international match calendar.

But coach Samson Siasia has named the England youth international on his roster, and that means the NFF must demonstrate their persuasion skills, especially as the Arsenal Under 21s have a league game two days before the contest with Gabon.

''We are expecting correspondence from the Nigerian FA, and it's also down to Alex Iwobi if he wants to play in that fixture,'' an Arsenal spokesman, Andrew Mancha, told SL10.ng.

''He would be released for the game if it goes through the proper channels. ''

Emma Okocha, a representative of Alex Iwobi, is on the same wavelength as Arsenal, saying the Nigeria Football Federation need to have a tête-à-tête with The Gunners higher - ups.

The retired Nigeria international has stressed that the ball is not in Alex Iwobi's court, and has highlighted that his nephew's commitment to the Under 23 national team cannot be doubted.

''That depends on Arsenal if they are going to release him. He came around sometime ago to train with the team.

''It shows he wants to play for the country. It now depends on the agreement between Arsenal and NFF.

''He needs Arsenal's permission to come since it's not a Fifa free window,'' Emma Okocha said to SL10.ng.

The versatile Alex Iwobi has been on the books of Arsenal for the past ten years, and has represented England at Under 16 and Under 17 level.

Chuma Anene Wants To Play For Nigeria Instead Of Norway

Ex Valerenga striker Chuma Anene has issued a come-and-get- me plea to coach Samson Siasia after admitting he would love to represent Nigeria at senior level instead of Norway if given the opportunity.

However, football's governing body, Fifa, must approve his onetime international allegiance switch, having represented the youth teams of Norway in competitive matches, including the Euro qualifiers.

''It is something that I have thought about many times. It would be an honour for me to represent my father and motherland,'' Chuma Anene told SL10.ng.

''By God’s grace if I am so blessed to do so one day, that would make me very proud. I don't think there has been any contact with the Nigeria Federation that I know of.''

Born in Oslo 21 years ago to parents who are Nigerians, Chuma Anene has highlighted that he's proud of his African heritage, saying he fraternizes
a lot with Nigerians.

''Adapting to the Nigeria setup would be something that just comes naturally, I think. My blood is Nigerian and my culture is both Nigerian and Norwegian.

''But it would probably not be the hardest thing seeing as I am surrounded by Nigerians a lot of the time,'' Anene concluded.

The Holmlia product currently plies his trade in Macedonia for champions FK Rabotnički, but he is hoping to put himself in the shop window in the next few months and move on the next stage.

Chuma Anene raked up more than 15 appearances for the youth teams of Norway, scoring 7 goals.

Michael Olaitan's recovery from a slump suffered last year is now a thing of the past, as he netted to save Ergotelis from defeat in their draw 2-2 with Panionos in the Greek Super League.

He rose from the bench at the start of the second half with his team trailing the visitors 2-1 and he didn't disappoint, as he put some smile on the home team fans, scoring their equaliser in the 73rd minute to help them claim a point.

The 22-year-old will spend the remaining part of this season on loan at Ergotelis from Olympiakos, as he bids his way back into competitive football after 10 months put with an illness that nearly ended his career.

So far he has played twice for the team and they will be hoping he can help them beat the drop to the second division in Greece, as they are presently 16th on the table only

Nigeria took a big step towards qualifying for the final round of the All African Games Qualifiers as Ajayi Junior scored twice in a 4-1 first-leg win over Gabon in Libreville on Saturday.

3SC striker Ajayi Junior handed the Dream Team VI a one-nil lead two minute into the game.

The hosts weren't in the mood to easily go down and they launched some attacks.

It took the composure of goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel to keep the scoreline at 1-0 in the opening thirty minutes.

With two minutes to the end of the first half, Bayelsa United attacking midfielder Tonbara Tiongoli forced his way to the 18-yard area and earned his team a penalty.

In-form striker Etebo Oghenekaro easily dispatched the spot kick and the first stanza ended 2-0 in favour of Samson Siasia's wards.

Nigeria continued to press forward at the beginning of second half, and the menacing Ajayi Junior grabbed his second goal of the day in the 49th minute.

Six minutes later, the Gabonese side reduced the deficit through Meye Axel.

Midfield maestro Azubuike Okechukwu also caused all sorts of problems with his precise passes and ball winning skills.

His free kick struck the upright fifteen minutes to the end of the match.

Wing wizard Godwin Saviour went on a solo run after he skillfully dribbled through the opponents' defence line, but the Plateau United kid bomber missed from close range.

Before the homers could recover and make the second leg match a keenly contested affair substitute Peter Onyekachi delivered the 4th goal for Nigeria.

Members of the Nigerian community in Gabon made a good presence and cheered the Dream Team loudly at the Stade Augustin Monedan a Sibang.

Babangida Hails Dream Team After Impressive Win

Former Nigeria U23 star, Tijani Babangida, has hailed the present U23 team after their impressive 4-1 win over Gabon in a 2015 All Africa Games qualifier in Libreville on Saturday.

The Nigerian team, otherwise known as the Dream Team VI, defeated their hosts at the Stade Augustine a Sibang in Libreville, to almost guarantee themselves a place in the final qualifying round of the series.

And Babangida, a member of the all conquering Dream Team 1 at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics, has congratulated the team handled by Samson Siasia, and says they have done the country proud.

“I’m very happy that we went and beat the Gabonese away from home,” he told sl10.ng. “It’s not always easy to play and win away from home in Africa and for them to have won by 4-1 says a lot about the team.

“They have done the country proud no doubt, and they deserve to be commended for getting such an interesting result in Gabon,” Babangida said.

The Nigerians will host their Gabonese counterparts in the return leg at the Abuja National Stadium on March 7, with the advantage of winning 4-1 away in the first leg, but Babangida has warned them against any form of complacency.

“We have won the first leg doesn’t mean we have won the second and they must understand this. I’m sure Siasia will make them understand because he’s a great guy.”

Arsenal's Iwobi Gutted Not To Make U23 Debut

Arsenal midfielder Alex Iwobi was disappointed that he could not make his official debut for Nigeria's Olympic National Team in the 4-1 thrashing of their Gabon in Libreville on Saturday.

The 18-year-old was paying the price of missing paperwork, with the Nigeria Football Federation failing to get clarification from Fifa to feature the ex-England youth international in the All Africa Games qualifier.

The news that Iwobi would not be eligible to play came at the eleventh hour, and he traveled with the squad to Gabon.

However, it was not surprising that coach Samson Siasia left his name off the starting eleven and substitutes.

''Even though I am disappointed to not get my debut for Nigeria , I'm happy that my teammates/family were able to be victorious against Gabon,'' said Alex Iwobi.

Alex Iwobi would have offered coach Samson Siasia an interesting alternative if he had featured, as he can play several roles in offense but he has stated that his preferred position is attacking midfielder.

''I am not a striker, that's not my primary position. I prefer to play as an attacking midfielder. I can also play from the left or right wing,'' the Arsenal number 45 told SL10.ng.

Except there is a last minute change in itinerary, Iwobi will return with the Dream Team VI squad to Nigeria before heading back to London this week.

What is up with Iwobi's eligibility. Will he able to join the team before the Olympics?

I think, he can only play for the super eagles since he played for England's cadet team.

Okay thank you very much. However, the Super Eagles coaching job should be sorted out. Iwobi should he invited for a Super Eagles friendly and then a qualifying match to tie him with the Super Eagles.

Siasia: It's Work In Progress

Head Coach of the U-23 national side, Samson Siasia has said though his team won 4-1 against Gabon on Saturday, the squad is still work in progress as he is still trying to get the right players for the each position.

Commending the boys for putting up a brave show in their first competitive game, the former Super Eagles gaffer added that many of the boys were playing big time football for the first time, and that hopefully as they play together they will bond well.

"Having in mind that this team has been together for barely three months, Nigerians should appreciate what these boys did today (Saturday).

“I am really impressed with all of them, they played as a team, meaning that all the hard work we put them through in the past three months has not been in vain.”

A brace from Junior Ajayi and one each from Etebo Oghenekaro and Peter Onyekachi ensured that the Dream Team VI won the first leg 4-1 away from home.

The return leg will come up at the Abuja National Stadium in the next twelve days

Father Says Arsenal Starlet Keen To Represent Nigeria

Arsenal FC of England teenager Alex Iwobi’s father has expressed the enthusiasm of the entire Iwobi family for the player to represent Nigeria.

“Alex is very, very keen and the entire family is enthusiastic for him to represent Nigeria. He was born here in Nigeria but we took him as a four –month old baby to England and he has been there ever since.

“He turned out for England at U-16, U-17 and U-18 levels in a number of friendlies and invitational tournaments, but we are all eager for him to play for Nigeria at senior level,” Chuka Iwobi, a lawyer said.

Alex Iwobi traveled to Gabon with the U-23 National Team for an 11th All-Africa Games qualifying match at the weekend, just to feel the culture and tempo of the Nigeria National Team camp setting.

“We are all excited at the imminence of Alex wearing the green-white-green. Anything that we need to do, any letter or papers that we need to give to the Nigeria Football Federation, we are ready to do that.

“I can’t believe the publicity that he has amassed over the past weeks. You open the papers and they are talking about Alex, and also on the radio. It is amazing.”

Chuka Iwobi, from Onitsha in Anambra State, confirmed that his mother is English but father a Nigerian, and there is no iota of doubt on where his heart lies.

“Even if he is not able to play for the U-23 National Team, we are looking forward to him playing for the Super Eagles. It will be the fulfillment of a dream.”

Barcelona Defender Godswill Ekpolo Eager To Represent Nigeria

Barcelona defender Elohor Godswill Ekpolo has professed his love for the Nigeria national team, and has emphasized that it would be a dream come true to wear the green - white- green jersey of the Super Eagles.

The Benin City born player was invited to Nigeria's Olympic National Team screening exercise last December, but the Blaugranas power brokers did not authorize his trip to Abuja because it was outside the designated date for international teams' get together.

The 19 year old has sent a message to coach Samson Siasia, saying the Dream Team VI has always been in his heart.

''They invited me but I couldn't come. By the grace of God, if they invite me again I will go,'' Godswill Ekpolo said to SL10.ng.

''My dream has always been to play for Nigeria. I'm only eligible to represent my country; I pray my dream comes to come true. ''

The versatile player, who is primarily a right back, has cited ex Barcelona star Eric Abidal as his role model.

''On the internet, they say I am a right back, but I can play in any position the coach puts me.

''I model my game after Eric Abidal, I love the way he plays. If the coach fields me as a winger or a number 7, I will play there,'' Ekpolo told SL10.ng.

The Torreforta product has been on the books of Barcelona since the age of 10.

Siasia Wants Liverpool's Jordon Ibe To Play For Dream Team

Nigeria's Olympic National Team coach, Samson Siasia, has revealed that he has set the wheels in motion with respect to highly - rated Liverpool starlet Jordon Ibe committing his international future to Nigeria instead of England.

Sources in the know earlier informed SL10.ng that the Dream Team VI coach was exploring the possibility of enlisting Jordon Ibe's services to his squad ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers.

And Siasia confirmed as much when contacted to clarify his position on the winger, who has turned out for the youth teams of England.

''We want Jordon Ibe before England takes him; let us make the first move,'' Samson Siasia told SL10.ng.

''We are trying to reach him, my friend in England has been trying to contact him to convince him to play for Nigeria. If you watch him play, you know he is a good player.''

The Nigeria under 23s have started preparations for the All Africa Games qualifying fixture against Gabon this weekend, with the coaches failing to extend invitations to the foreign - based contingent.

''We couldn't invite them because the date is not a Fifa window. Clubs will not release their players.

''That is why they were not invited, we will invite them against Zambia (if we qualify),'' Samson Siasia revealed.

The retired Nigeria international was in the dugout in 2008 when the Dream Team won silver at the Beijing Olympics.
