Aggrieved policemen to begin strike on March 28th

Policemen who are being owed promotion arrears have said they would embark on strike on March 28, 2015, the day the Presidential election would hold. According to them, this will help them press home their demand and convince the police authorities that they are serious about their threat to down tool.

The police personnel said that over 100 of their colleagues retired in 2014 without being paid the promotion arrears and other benefits, adding that the payment had been pending for over two years.

The men who spoke to our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, expressed fears that their benefits may not be paid as promised by the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba.

The officers faulted the statement credited to the IG that the police could not pay duty tour allowances and other benefits because of the shortfall in allocation to the Force by the Federal Government.

Abba had stated in a document on the 2015 Budget Defence presented to the Senate Committee on Police Affairs last week that the 2014 police budget which suffered a shortfall of N6,464673,537 made it impossible to successfully conclude the payment of personnel emolument in 2014.

The policemen said that those that were being owed numbered about 15,000, adding that from the information available to them, nothing was being done by the police authorities to address their grievance.

“The only way we could make the IG pay us our salary arrears and other benefits is to embark on strike on Election Day when the nation would need us the most. Otherwise, the issue would be swept under the carpet, like others.

“Over 100 policemen have retired without being paid the arrears and some of us would retire this month or next. This means that we may not get the money before leaving service,” the men complained.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, had earlier assured that the aggrieved policemen would be paid as soon as the Force received money from the Federal Government.

“We are working hard to pay the men and I can assure you that they would be paid once the government pays us; we are waiting for the government to pay us, so we can pay them. The welfare of officers and men of the Force is of paramount importance to the IG and he would do everything necessary to ensure their welfare,” he stated.

I can see some people are already opening different fronts again to have the elections postponed.

1. Push the INEC boss out, this can spark a series of protests, court cases and other actions that will ultimately culminate into election postponement. Another angle to this is that the new INEC boss may also claim the register has been compromised and that he needs time to tidy it and study what is on ground to be able to conduct free and fair elections.

2. Use a number of court cases to frustrate the elections has it happened in 1993. A number of cases are already challenging the use of card readers and PVC.

3. Rumours of assassination attempt against GMB should not be taken with levity, either it succeeds or or not, they may claim election postponement is needed to calm nerves.

4. Some people are already subtly saying after the successes of the military in the NE, time is needed to have homes rebuilt and IDPs returned to their homes. They are already insinuating that this is the priority after the army successfully totally dislodge the militants and not elections.

5. Though this is now getting rhetorical, but some propagandists are still subtly advocating for election postponement based on PVC collection and unequal collection rate across the geopolitical zones.

6. Police strike. This is the new twist. The last time policemen purportedly went on strike, so much was heard from the police high commands about how illegal and irresponsible it is for policemen to even conceive the idea of strike. But what do we have now, silence! The police headquarters and the president has not deemed it important to let the aggrieved policemen know that their issue will be sorted out and their benefits will be paid (positive reinforcement). They have even also not used a negative reinforcement, by threatening them that going on strike is illegal! What does this imply?? Are they being encouraged on by certain powerful people??

Either the desperate cabal likes it or not, majority of Nigerians want a free and fair elections to hold and the winner allowed to steer the ship of the Nigerian state.

GEJ, its like the gods and the devils have decided to put their efforts together and bring him down this coming elections. Troubled inec, drop in electricity supply, fuel scarcity, terrible campaign. The guy should just accept that God is no longer on his side.

Can everyone see where Jonathan is leading this country?? Is this his final gambit to ensure elections are not held at all in the country??
First the military said they can't guarantee security on Feb14 hence the election should be shifted, they were pushed forward. Then the same military is now saying they are to begin the final coordinated push to reclaim all territories captured by the insurgents on the 28th of march hinting that they would still be unavailable on the said date! Now the police as well is angling to commence strike on that same day!!!

This is utterly disgusting.

Jonathan in his fit of desperation seems oblivious of the implications of these actions he's taking (let no one come here and tell me he's not the one behind these). Didn't he say his ambition isn't worth the life of a single Nigerian?? Why is he now hell bent on burning this country to the ground?? If it is amnesty he seeks, let him simply invite Buhari and tell him so and I'm sure Buhari can cut a deal with him for soft landing after he's kicked out. But the polls MUST be HELD!!

He bought himself six extra weeks to put his house in order yet all they have been doing are the same things they were doing on the campaign that landed them in the kind of precarious situation they find themselves; personal attacks on Buhari and APC chieftains. What has bad breath and good looks got to do with governance

Jonathan would end up like Samuel Doe, and not even Gbagbo, if he continues along this trajectory.

It is u who is paranoid and seriously praying for GMB's hospitality to be true. If u have comprehension skills u should have noticed my use of the word rumoured. The rumour was even carried in a newspaper

The wicked PDP'S plan of scuttling the elections will boomerang in their faces! Mark my words.

What is appalling is the date they've chosen to commence the action. Jonathan surely doesn't want elections held in this country.
