20 University Programs You Should Not Spend Money To Study In Nigeria by nollyj: 1:41pm On Mar 04, 2015
I wrote a post 2 days ago on 15 Best Uncommon Courses To Study in Nigeria in 2015 and I was surprise to see it in front page. I spent some time going through comments made on the post and I came to the realization that there are some programs being offered in Nigerian Universities that no one should spend money or time to study.

You should not feel bad if you are enroll in any of the listed programs. Please don't find solace or justification because you know a single person that has studied one of these programs and became successful. It is not enough reason to do it.

Reasons why you should not spend money on these programs / courses?

1. Lack of employment

I am not saying there is zero unemployment but the employment opportunities with these programs are very limited. Don't spend 4 to 6 six paying tuition only to come out and join the queue of unemployed graduates in your study field.

2. Extinction

Some of the listed study programs are heading to extinction. Please do not spend your time and money to study a program that the future has strip its usefulness

3. Career Advancement

Think about these programs and ask yourself where will I be in the next 20 year if I stick with this career path. Some of these programs do not have any form of advancement if you wish to retire there.

Reasons why you should spend money on these programs?

I know that this post is about why you should not study this program but there is always exception in certain things. I will list some few exceptions.

1.If you just want a degree or certificate

If you core purpose of going to university is for the sake of degree or certificate then do not loss sleep on this

2. Strong Connection (IM)

If you are highly connected in Nigeria or you are in a circle of highly place people who are willing to help you then what you study does not matter much because they can fix you anywhere.

My intention for writing this post is not to bring a university program down but to emphasize what lies ahead after graduation.

The university programs you should not spend your money and time on in Nigeria are listed below.

Animal Physiology

Developmental Studies

history

Anthropology

Philosophy

General and Liberal Arts

Humanities

Religious Studies

Mass Communication

Archeology

Photographic Arts

Sociology

Counselor

Food Science

Sport science

French

English Literature

Media studies

Geography

Film Studies

Where are not here to bash each other rather we are here to learn. We might differ in opinion but it should not result to insults.
If you have a better list I will like to see it and also learn from it.
Finally. what is your take? which programs / courses should be removed or added in this list?

Op I don't agree with you in the case of mass communication.....mass communication is very wide... You can chose to work for the print media, electronic media, advert company nd so many.... Mass comm as to do with comunication nd if u ar a good communicator u have the chance to work were ever you like.. You can choose to be a public relation officer in a big company such as cocacola, dangoter, nd so many more that is if you ar good in communication... At the same time, if u ar lucky to get a job in an electronic media such as television or radio u can be a sport repoter, newscaster, discjockey, announcer, editor, weather reporter, nd you can even do the work of an MC(master of ceremony nd many more.... So bros, mass comm is a good course nd we have so many tv nd radio stations nd even newspapers nd magazins around africa.. No mind my long talk

No course is bad , the best in naija is to get ur strong 2.1 and your destiny will finish the rest. Most professional courses will only give you an upper hand in the labour market but that does not mean that u will be succesful than others. Many succesful nigerians i know are not working with what they read in their first degree example sanusi lamido sanusi.

Dude...Media studies? Humanities? Mass Com? Counselling? French? You must be kidding me! Do you have any idea of how opportunities abound for people who studied the above? You should have done a proper research on the career opportunities available for people who studied the above before posting it here. And the MOD responsible for bringing this to FP...oh well lipsrsealed

delightful1:

Why is that?

Archaeologists study past cultures by examining artifacts, objects made, used, or changed by humans. Have you ever found a penny on the ground? That is an artifact that was lost by someone. Years from now, that penny could be found by an archaeologist.

How that one fit put food for your belle for 9ja?

Op,you are getting it wrong..

Success isn't 100% dependent to course studied at the tertiary institution..

Its about God's grace, attitude, altitude to life.

God maketh riches, man is just striving..
