It is obvious that the author has a certificate-dependent mentality which is the bane of our graduates. His first point buttresses this. When do we learn not to depend on certificates?

Food science and Technology is one of those few lucrative courses remaining in the Developing country especially in NIGERIA. Please OP make your research comprehensive before taking it to the public. I am a Food Scientist and I'm very proud of it.

Why would so many people keep say that almost all the programs should not have made this list. The aim of this post is the employment opportunities these programs hold in Nigeria. It is not about its importance to society.

My personal case study:

I studied Microbiology. After graduation from a class of 60 students, only 3 % of my course mates currently work in field related to microbiology. Many did not get a job and they were forced into business or do things that they did not dream or planned to take as a career in life.

I went further to study Computer Software Development in a class of 50, about 95 % work in computer related sector. It has help us to build a strong network within this sector. There is no week that will past without one of my classmates informing me of new position in their office or somewhere else.

Microbiology is good but if I have the opportunity again I will not study Microbiology in Nigeria.

This is not about what you are currently studying or defending your course of study but the chance of getting your dream job after graduation with this programs. It is easy to list Oil and Gas companies and other multinational but it is not easy getting in and the competition is high due to the volume of graduates out there.

Food science

wilsondave:
dude I disagree with you on food science..... are you a university graduate..... if yes take it or leave it food science and technology is a very good course, in fact probability of getting job is high and u can also be self employed as a food scientist.... a food scientist can work in company listed bellow...

NBC Nigeria bottling company and
NB PLC
Nestle
Noodles company
eatery.... e.t.c
you can as well work in a milk company...

in fact when talking about food processing we talking about anything that enters into the oesophagus.....

There is a ton of food science opportunities in Nigeria. Perhaps the OP should have spent a little more time researching the topic before going to press.

op are u implying that we should not study non professional courses?

one thing i know is that every human being has to develop his intellect. Whether through mass com, history, carpentry, engineering or what have you.
By now you should have known that not more than 10% of graduates practice what they study.

Op are you a Nigerian?

Your course is hardly a determinant of getting a job, except for cases for professionals like engineers, accountant

Well, I read French and I've gotten jobs always. From fed govt, First Bank and now Nestle.

Graduates and job searchers need reorientation

op you should change your thread title to courses that are fulfilling but not necessarily avenues to becoming rich.

see my thread here for professions that are financially beneficial:

however, being financially beneficial does not in any way invalidate other professions.

Op,
I don't know how to make this post without appearing rude and disrespectful, so you will have to forgive me in advance.

Once again, you post demonstrates in very clear terms that you, and infact, we Africans do not fully grasp the meaning and value of education.

I don't blame you personally too much. I blame our succession of brain dead and visionless leadership Since independence, who still haven't figured out that education is not about paper certificate to get job.
It is more about mental developement and refinement in order to release and harness the imaginative and infinite creative potential of the mind.
Every area of study is useful both to the learner and to the greater society. What would humanity be without all these academic disciplines?

The fact that we put all emphasis on paper certificates rather than real learning and hunger to learn more, is at the heart of our persistent underdevelopment.

The fact that we don't have trained archeologists and anthropologists in Nigerian to dig into our remote pasts are the reasons that many morons walk around calling themselves Israelites.

The fact that we don't have ancient historians and forensic geneticists, etc, is the reason that con men in bling bling attires sell us the crap that we are the ofsprings of a mythical white man called Noah who lived less than 6yrs ago, whereas, Yoruba culture, just to mention one, is more than 11,000 yrs old.

The fact that we don't have enough mental health scientists and sociologists is the reason we have a reported 23 million Nigerians suffering from undiagnosed and untreated various forms of mental illnesses.
The funny but sad irony of this situation is that many of these mentally ill citizens occupy positions of power and influence in our society.

So, it's not going to get better soon.

guy, I agree with you on some others but for MASS COMM? Please, explain more. For RELIGION, let it come to your notice that Religion is like the greatest problem in the world today and the world is actually looking for scholars who can proffer proper solutions to it. And besides, speaking generally, you've got to understand that skills is what matters most today in education.

No course is bad , the best in naija is to get ur strong 2.1 and your destiny will finish the rest. Most professional courses will only give you an upper hand in the labour market but that does not mean that u will be succesful than others. Many succesful nigerians i know are not working with what they read in their first degree example sanusi lamido sanusi.

Nothing like strong or weak! 2.1 is 2.1!
