Lessons for today
A Jazz Piano Chord Approach That Will Stretch Your Ears
Here is a simple approach to jazz chords that will get you to hear jazz chords even if you don’t have a strong music theory background.

If you know how to play any of the basic triads as chords on a piano then you can train your ears to hear even the most complex jazz chords.

Hear, Stack, and Sing Your Basic Triads
Any complex sounding chord can be implied from a combination of stacking 2 simple triads.

Follow these simple steps to get to the point where you can hear and comprehend even the most complex jazz chords.

Step 1: Play a major triad on a piano.

Step 2: Sing each note in that major triad.

Step 3: Play a different major triad.

Step 4: Sing each note in that major triad.

Step 5: Play both major triads at the same time.

Step 6: Sing each note (total of 6 notes) that you are hearing.

By breaking down a complex sounding chord into smaller chunks you can be able to hear the actual notes sounding in a chord more easily.

This concept is similar to hearing slash chords, only this time, instead of just having a chord on top of a single bass note, you’ll be having a chord on top of another chord.

Here are some of the jazz chords you can imply and learn to hear using this simple jazz piano chord approach.

C major triad + D major triad = C 9 #11 add 13 (C, E, G, D, F#, A)

C major triad + G major triad = C major 7 add 9 (C, E, G, G, B, D)

C major triad + Bb major triad = C 7 sus 9 (C, E, G, Bb, D, F)

C minor triad + B diminished triad = C minor/major 7 9 add 11 (C, Eb, G, B, D, F)

C minor triad + F augmented triad = C minor 11 13 b9 (C, Eb, G, F, A, C#)

C minor triad + F# major triad = C minor b5 13 b9 (C, Eb, G, F#, A, C#)

E major triad + C sus 2= E7#5#9 (E,Ab,B,D,G,C)

To take this practice to another level, explore playing different inversions for each triad that you are playing and follow steps 1 through 6 each time.

gameboi:
This is what I wanted to share:

In the key of F( F G A Bb C D E F), the minors are G A D.
As usual, one would expect the G(being a minor) to be played as G Bb D(or in any of its inversions). Well, I just discovered another way of playing minor chords to give them a new feel. It's by Substituting the Minors with a Maj7 chord.

Rather than play Gmin as G-Bb-D, use the major of Gmin and add a major 7th to it.

The major of of Gmin is Bb. Therefore Gmin should be played as Bbmaj7( A Bb [D] F ).
The Combination then becomes, Bbmaj7//G D(i.e Bbmaj7 chord with the right hand and G D on the left)

Same thing applies to Amin. The major of Amin is C. Therefore Amin should be played as Cmaj7(B C [E] G). The combination then becomes Cmaj7//A E.

And for Dmin, the Major of Dmin is Fmaj. Therefore Dmin should be played as Fmaj7( E F [A] C). The combination on both hands becomes Fmaj7//D A.

NB: the notes in square brackets are optional

Cc: Karleb, Zbone, dehero1, et al.

Drammadiddy welcome back. I know you know what I posted already. So there's no need to refer you to it.
I had to quote this because this is really what I can relate to. I do play on the key of F and C also with a bit of F# , Bb and G. I tried what you posted on my piano but that of C-E-G-B/A was sounding out of place to my hearing. Please if possible you can give any song that correlates with those chords. I still have more questions I would like to ask as we go on. Thanks.

I was hoping no one would notice that. It sounds awkward 'cos of the B note. The B note doesn't belong to the scale of Fmaj.
You need a lot of confidence when playing it. See ehn No look anybody face when you try that chord. Just play it #LikeABoss.

I noticed the awkwardness too but since it's gameboi and Dramadiddy endorses it, who am I to say otherwise? undecided

That apart, as time goes on the ear will get used to it, the last time I checked, music is solely based on tension and release.

I'll go check them out, you should try out "smoothchord" too, they major in scoring songs.

I was talking about your video turned audio. undecided

Thanks for sharing. From this I see that you play on key Ab (Am I right?). How convenient do you it will be for someone playing on F major to flex these chords? A response to this will give me a ground to decide whether to translate to Fmajor. But I'm still learning sha. In the sense that I'm not good yet in playing diminished chords, augmented and so on or maybe I do without knowing. I'm familiar with the minor sevenths and major sevenths but I'm looking forward to expand my horizon.

that's why I wrote the chords in solfa notes for transposition purposes, all you need to do is follow the solfa notes on F and not on Ab

Hahaha. I'm so musically sensitive to errors that any slight one would reduce my momentum. Really I'm not as good as professionals who are good in covering up immediately there is an error. But sincerely just knowing the chords is not all but its really knowing what comes next. Apart from that A part playing chord Bb/G (G bass line and Bb chords) was really pleasant to my hearing.
I would sincerely appreciate it if you guys share more .amr or .mp3 files of how you play praises with the split function. No be Ariaria o, I mean correct Western. LOL.

I've listen to this and as usual I'm bemused as to how some chords would fall in and I also have problems with soloing songs. Why is it like you weren't maintaining a steady tempo or is it just me? From the sound of the piano, the SUSTAIN was on and that make some chords sound awkward atimes. Why do most professionals like using SUSTAIN, do you think it will be better off when SUSTAIN is left off.
