Now we are converging! This is a definite possibility. Although my thought is that it should be recognised in passing and move on! I do my best to help.

I have been coming to Naija for 15 years training people.

Once on my course was a guy who kept arguing against everything I was teaching. He was easily proved wrong but at the end to cover his embarrassment he said:

Why do we need to pay you guys so much and bring you from Europe to train us. Why not use another Nigerian?

(A VERY valid question by the way and one I have GREAT sympathy for)

I answered simply:

If you had anyone here who COULD do it them you would be using THEM and not me. (Lack of Airfares etc would make it MUCH more economical).

Then I added:

If he had spent less time arguing (and it was simply that he wanted to prove an oyinbo wrong) and more time learning then HE could very well be one of those who WOULD be doing the training instead of me!

Lets stop looking for things to blame and work together to progress Africa!

This is exactly what the Asians, Japanese, Chinese e.t.c are doing to get developed.

Agreed, Noah cursed someone, but it wasn't Ham. read that passage again, the curse of being a slave to his brothers was placed on Ham's son, Canaan.

Here is where I must interject as I take issue with this level of haughtiness. There are people in Nigeria who can coach and teach people. Albeit, a good number of them are abroad in countries like the U.K. United States, Saudi Arabia and UAE.....

Do you forget who the most educated people are in the U.K. right now? Nigerians are. It's the same as in the U.S. Nigerians are the most educated. So, please don't flatter yourself. I hope to God one of these days you meet an extremely intelligent Nigerian in person (not online) so that you can take a bit of your unwarranted haughtiness elsewhere.

In my particular field the expertise is greater abroad.

I don't say anything about intelligence merely experience in a particular field.

I meet extremely intelligent Nigerians all the time. If they were not then they would not be on the courses I teach!

Please don't assume or put words into my mouth. I suspect you just want to disagree and argue with ANYTHING an oyinbo says!

Absolutely, the thing is that uneducated people look at people on a basis of skin colour, race, religion, ethnic background, etc. etc. So you don't have to waste your time with such people.

Oh ye black man. Brainwashed into believing he is inferior. Echoing racial subjugation cliches purposefully orchestrated to mentally subjugate him as inferior.

Listen, Civilization started from Africa. The earliest human civilization started in Egypt at about 3000BC when the ancient black egyptians gathered together to form a civilization, out of which came the egyptian pyramids (an architectural wonder of sort with to such a wonderful precision which still dazzles modern science of today), mathematics, philosophy, astrology, philosophy etc. Egypt was at its might during ancient times and can be likened to the position of America in the world today. Nationals from Rome, Greece, Persia, paid visits to Egypt to learn from her civilization. The earliest 'white' civilization is traced to the Romans and Greeks who were to surface in world history in 800BC i.e. about 2200 years after the Egyptian civilization. The Romans and Greeks learned from Egyptian temple priests and took their knowledge with them back to Rome and Greece where they wrote their books and equally admitted in their books that they learned from the egyptian priests first hand. Ancient Egyptians were already practising mathematics (the pythagoras theorem with which they used to build the pyramids. The pythagoras theory in mathematics which is wrongly attributed to Pythagoras actually came from the Egyptians for they knew that the longest side of a right angled triangle can be taken from the square root of the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other 2 sides. They had formulas for finding the area of shapes etc). 2000 years later, Egypt was invaded by the romans, their temples destroyed and their books and knowledge carted away. Egypt fell under Roman occupation and became a colony of Rome from about 300BC to 4AD/5AD when the Roman empire fell and Europe was plunged into intellectual darkness.

Thus the Romans lost the knowledge which they had learned from the Egyptians, marking the beginning of the dark ages (also known as the middle ages - a period characterized by stuntness in growth of useful world learning and advancement) until year 711 when the black moors of North Africa who were Muslims invaded Spain through the Strait of Gibraltar and conquered Spain, Portugal and the Southern Part of France, establishing the Islam religion in Iberia (Portugal, Spain, France). The moors took knowledge with them to Europe and brought again learning and civilization to Europe.

The Spanish occupation by the Moors began in 711 AD when an African army, under their leader Tariq ibn-Ziyad, crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from northern Africa and invaded the Iberian peninsula ‘Andalus' (Spain under the Visigoths).

2. A European scholar sympathetic to the Spaniards remembered the conquest in this way:

a. [T]he reins of their (Moors) horses were as fire, their faces black as pitch, their eyes shone like burning candles, their horses were swift as leopards and the riders fiercer than a wolf in a sheepfold at night . . . The noble Goths [the German rulers of Spain to whom Roderick belonged] were broken in an hour, quicker than tongue can tell. Oh luckless Spain! [i]

[i] Quoted in Edward Scobie, The Moors and Portugal's Global Expansion, in Golden Age of the Moor, ed Ivan Van Sertima, US, Transaction Publishers, 1992, p.336

3. The Moors, who ruled Spain for 800 years, introduced new scientific techniques to Europe, such as an astrolabe, a device for measuring the position of the stars and planets. Scientific progress in Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Geography and Philosophy flourished in Moorish Spain

4. Basil Davidson, one of the most noted historians recognized and declared that there were no lands at that time (the eighth century) "more admired by its neighbours, or more comfortable to live in, than a rich African civilization which took shape in Spain"

5. At its height, Córdova, the heart of Moorish territory in Spain, was the most modern city in Europe. The streets were well-paved, with raised sidewalks for pedestrians. During the night, ten miles of streets were well illuminated by lamps. (This was hundreds of years before there was a paved street in Paris or a street lamp in London.) Cordova had 900 public baths - we are told that a poor Moor would go without bread rather than soap!

6. The Great Mosque of Córdoba (La Mezquita) is still one of the architectural wonders of the world in spite of later Spanish disfigurements. Its low scarlet and gold roof, supported by 1,000 columns of marble, jasper and and porphyry, was lit by thousands of brass and silver lamps which burned perfumed oil.

7. Education was universal in Moorish Spain, available to all, while in Christian Europe ninety-nine percent of the population were illiterate, and even kings could neither read nor write. At that time, Europe had only two universities, the Moors had seventeen great universities! These were located in Almeria, Cordova, Granada, Juen, Malaga, Seville, and Toledo.

8. In the tenth and eleventh centuries, public libraries in Europe were non-existent, while Moorish Spain could boast of more than seventy, of which the one in Cordova housed six hundred thousand manuscripts.

9. Over 4,000 Arabic words and Arabic-derived phrases have been absorbed into the Spanish language. Words beginning with "al," for example, are derived from Arabic. Arabic words such as algebra, alcohol, chemistry, nadir, alkaline, and cipher entered the language. Even words such as checkmate, influenza, typhoon, orange, and cable can be traced back to Arabic origins.

10. The most significant Moorish musician was known as Ziryab (the Blackbird) who arrived in Spain in 822. The Moors introduced earliest versions of several instruments, including the Lute or el oud, the guitar or kithara and the Lyre. Ziryab changed the style of eating by breaking meals into separate courses beginning with soup and ending with desserts.

11. The #Moors introduced paper to Europe and Arabic numerals, which replaced the clumsy Roman system.

12. The Moors introduced many new crops including the orange, lemon, peach, apricot, fig, sugar cane, dates, ginger and pomegranate as well as saffron, sugar cane, cotton, silk and rice which remain some of Spain's main products today.

13. The Moorish rulers lived in sumptuous palaces, while the monarchs of Germany, France, and England dwelt in big barns, with no windows and no chimneys, and with only a hole in the roof for the exit of smoke. One such Moorish palace ‘Alhambra' (literally "the red one"wink in Granada is one of Spain's architectural masterpieces. Alhambra was the seat of Muslim rulers from the 13th century to the end of the 15th century. The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

14. It was through Africa that the new knowledge of China, India, and Arabia reached Europe The #Moors brought the Compass from China into Europe.

15. The Moors ruled and occupied Lisbon (named "Lashbuna" by the Moors) and the rest of the country until well into the twelfth century. They were finally defeated and driven out by the forces of King Alfonso Henriques. The scene of this battle was the Castelo de Sao Jorge or the 'Castle of St. George.'

Spain (Europe) and Morocco (Africa) are so close together that you can see both countries from each side of each continent:
http://i.imgur.com/9NTwF.jpg?1[/img]

You could literally cross over from Morocco into Spain by speed boat in less than 10 minutes.

The Moors brought enormous learning to Spain that over centuries would percolate through the rest of Europe.

The intellectual achievements of the Moors in Spain had a lasting effect; education was universal in Moorish Spain, while in Christian Europe, 99 percent of the population was illiterate, and even kings could neither read nor write. At a time when Europe had only two universities, the Moors had seventeen, located in Almeria, Cordova, Granada, Juen, Malaga, Seville, and Toledo.

In the 10th and 11th centuries, public libraries in Europe were non-existent, while Moorish Spain could boast of more than 70, including one in Cordova that housed hundreds of thousands of manuscripts. Universities in Paris and Oxford were established after visits by scholars to Moorish Spain.

It was this system of education, taken to Europe by the Moors, that seeded the European Renaissance and brought the continent out of the 1,000 years of intellectual and physical gloom of the Middle Ages.

After the end of the Moorish period in Iberia (Europe) came the Renaissance period, marked by the revival of interest and learning in arts and science. Europe grew and expanded ever since.

The Moors ruled for over 800 years in Europe until 1492 when they were finally expelled from Spain by Isabella back to Morocco. By 1800 America (the new world) was coming into world power. The expellation of the moors (blacks) was a great victory for the whites in the history of whites. The period of Moorish presence in Spain began the signification of 'black' as evil (the domination of islam over christianity in spain and consequently 'black', being the colour of the moors, being synonymous with the islam religion), thus giving birth to the earliest racial sentiments against the black people. It is said that before the Moors left they handed over a map of how to get to the Americas. 8 months later in 1492 using the map handed over to him, Columbus set out for his voyage to America (the new world) where he met the Red Indians. Transatlantic slavery of black africans was soon to start immediately, in early 1500s and reaching its peak between 1600 and 1700s and ending in the 1800s.

The dominion of the blacks in spain was something europe was never to have again. Thus began the subjugation of the black african people as 'lower' beings, blotting of the african history and rewriting of history, attribution of earliest human inventions to people of caucasian origin (philosophy attributed to aristotle who mentioned that he learned from the egyptians, pythagoras theorem which the ancient egyptians used in building the pyramids attributed pythagoras a greek man etc), the attempts to 'white-wash' ancient egypt and claim its civilization to be 'white' civilization or non-african or 'aryan' despite overwhelming evidence seen from the mummies of dead pharoahs, egyptian depictions of themselves as a black people, egyptian reference to themselves as 'kemet' (black, khawm, ham), DNA and skin test evidence performed on some of these mummies that revealed sub-saharan ancestry and high melanin pigmentation (blacks have high melanin content in their skin, whites lack melanin. Melanin is responsible for the colouration of the human body) etc that prove the ancient egyptians were a black people.

One of the earliest universities in the world is the University of Timbuktu in Mali but you will never hear of this part of history. It has been totally ignored and sidelined and European universities glorified instead.

The Renaissance period of Europe saw the representation of several African figures as whites. In Christianity, Jesus Christ and His Mother, Mary, who were black were represented as white people. The Pope in Rome, obviously knowing the truth, prays in front of a black mother mary and baby jesus. Beethoven who was described as a 'blackamor' is said to have been represented as 'white'. The 18th century saw the rise and spread of white superiority and black inferiority theories all over Europe and America. Several tactics have been used to ingrain mentally into the black people of some 'inferiority' complex, which unfortunately till today, majority of blacks are still suffering from it. They have been told several times without number that they are 'inferior' and incapable of performing great things that they have come to believe it as true. Infact, some blacks would not even want to attempt greatness or invention because they believe their brains are incapable of doing such.

Till today, blacks are still suffering from this mentality and there has been several calls for blacks to emancipate themselves from mental slavery. You are no longer physically bound by chains but mentally you still think you are. However, some blacks are beginning to awaken to their original self. With knowledge, self-realization is restored, and there comes with it power of the mind and self.

please when you write something than lok what you write

The Romans interacted with (and later conquered) parts of Mauretania, a state that covered modern Morocco, western Algeria, and the Spanish cities Ceuta and Melilla during the classical period. The people of the region were noted in Classical literature as Mauri, which was subsequently rendered as "Moors" in English.[9] It is often common in modern times to apply the appellation of "Moor" or "Moors" to North Africans, especially Moroccans, although some find this derogatory.

Isidore of Seville, writing in the seventh century, claimed that the Latin word Maurus was derived from the Greek mauron, μαύρον, which is the Greek word for black.[10]
Modern meanings

In the Medieval Romance languages (such as Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian), the Latin word took such forms as moro, moir, mor, mouro and maur. From denoting a specific Berber people in western Libya, the name acquired more general meaning in the Romance languages during the medieval period, partly developing a general meaning of "Muslim", partly (much like "Saracens"wink taking a religious meaning of "infidels" in the context of the Crusades and the Reconquista.

Beside its usage in historical context, Moor and Moorish (Italian and Spanish: moro, French: maure, Portuguese: mouro, Romanian: maur) are used to designate an ethnic group speaking the Hassaniya Arabic dialect. They inhabit Mauritania and parts of Algeria, Moroccan Sahara, Tunisia, Morocco, Niger and Mali. In Niger and Mali, these peoples are also known as the Azawagh Arabs, after the Azawagh region of the Sahara.[11]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moors read this than you will see that moors are arab people and not black africans

Well, first of all am a Christian and from my own findings in the Bible, civilization started here in Africa and gradually shifted to Asia before Europe and America. Time alone can give account of how Africa got to this point of being uncivilized compare to other continent such as Europe, America, Australia and the rest. We are in the 21st century and still battling with modern day slavery, racism and the rest. 3 things denying Africa from unity are Religion, Politics and Language. These, the whitemen used in controlling Africans without us knowing and they are still using it up till date, else Africa should have been the most powerful continent on earth cause of her natural resources, weather, climate and people. that's the little I can say or perhaps put in summary.

The Japanese are also huge puppets of the west.

What Africa needs is remember his/her history, as a continent. Remember its moments of greatness and not elect foolish leaders who will bow down to other regions in a show of incompetence.

Africans need to stop being afraid of the West (France, England and United States), and move on doing their own thing. Be proud of who they are and take pride in their culture.

Africans also need to stop selling out other Africans or blacks in favour of bowing down to Oyibos (I really hope you are not one of those Africans). The only way for Africans to progress are as follows:

1. Learn to become cold-hearted in a cold-hearted Western dominated world
2. Learn to not bow down like fools and sissies to Asian and Western powers
3. Learn to stop being overly honest when dealing with non-African powers (because most people are very dishonest with Africans)
4. Place a high emphasis on technological advancements and engineering
5. Stop kissing Western arse
6. Have an "I can do personality" meaning being able to build our own things, weapons, computers and other technology related to computers, etc.
7. Stop electing corrupt leaders who embezzle all the money

With that, I'm going to sleep. Before my Fulaniness really comes out

sorry that is not tru it is mesopotamia and this is older than egypt

The history of Mesopotamia describes the history of the area known as Mesopotamia, roughly coinciding with the Tigris–Euphrates basin, from the earliest human occupation in the Lower Paleolithic period up to the Muslim conquests in the 7th century AD. This history is pieced together from evidence retrieved from archaeological excavations and, after the introduction of writing in the late 4th millennium BC, an increasing amount of historical sources. While in the Paleolithic and early Neolithic periods only parts of Upper Mesopotamia were occupied, the southern alluvium was settled during the late Neolithic period. Mesopotamia has been home to many of the oldest major civilizations, entering history from the Early Bronze Age, for which reason it is often dubbed the cradle of civilization. The rise of the first cities in southern Mesopotamia dates to the Chalcolithic (Uruk period), from c. 5300 BC; its regional independence ended with the Achaemenid conquest in 539 BC, although a few native neo-Assyrian kingdoms existed at different times, namely Adiabene, Osroene and Hatra.

While thinking on the question, i realised the industrial age started in Europe not very long after the europeans expanded and widened their horizons by venturing out of the eurasia continental plate to the New World(America) to surjourn. There, can't be developement if a man persist in not moving out of his location.

I am not sure.

In Spain the word moro was used (like many others) as just a word for 'muslim' from whatever origin, and there were many different origins, including arabic, yemeni, syrian, slav etc all from further east.

This has been translated into English as 'moor' but in English and in other areas away from the Spanish context it has other meanings.

There is no worse a phrase in history than 'the moors ruled Spain'. Various Muslims ruled most or parts of Spain for nearly 800 years would be a much better phrase. 'Moro' directly translates best into 'muslim'.

http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Moors

read this that you will know that with moors it is always that it means muslims and not black africans because the word for black africans is niga

the best is when you know your own history and learn your own history and the problem with africans is they they forgot their own history when i read about one so called god of men who told his followers african history is bad and his followers should forget it.

I feel Africans as whole got just political independence, but still suffering from economical, social and cultural legacies left behind by the Europeans. which means Africans has never been free economically, socially and culturally. They've always influenced the Africans directly or indirectly.
The colonial masters used the Africans and resources in Africa to develop there world at the detriment of the Africans, though it's wrong to fully blame the Europeans for the underdevelopment of the African continent.
It's high time we see where it's all coming from and tackle it.

There were also Sub-Saharan Africans who had been absorbed into Al-Andalus to be used as soldiers and slaves. The Berber and Sub-Saharan African soldiers were known as "tangerines" because they were imported through Tangier.

We had the best brains in Africa. The Europe only played smartness on African. Read the book " How Europe underdeveloped Africa" it has the answer to your question. Though African brethren aint still helping themselves.

How did Africa allow them to outsmart us? Truth needs told, why is our skin black? It definitely has something to do with our brains too.

I have always wanted to ask this question , where was Africa when Europe and the rest where developing ? how come we don't have great early inventors or physicist such as Einstein and iseac newton ?what were we doing around the early 1900's or 1800's ? contributions are needed

A more apt question now is; What are you doing now to make Africa better than you found it, what are you doing now to become the next Einstein, Newton etc.?

It's sad that Africans don't know their history.
We have contributed most to human development.

The science & tech you see today is a culmination of knowledge that began way back in Africa, especially Egypt/Nubia.

i think many people here are missing the question

when the whites come to africa, the west had developed already they had sort of a system working in their respective countries

so we should focus on the period before the whiteman came to africa, the white man came to africa after releasing the potential of market of goods in their own countries and they sought to get cheap raw materials from beyond europe, their systems created market for goods and services and all that developed country

if we focus on the period the whiteman came to africa we fail to answer the question because africa was their before the whiteman and it has kingdom etc but how far had we developed as those scattered kingdoms

and also lets put egypt our of the equation simply because that was one of the developed empire among other empires scattered allover africa but what is there to show the development they did before the whiteman made us slave

many people answer the question by only looking at the period the whiteman came and left but still to me it doesnt answer the question as africa has kingdoms already before the aririval of whites but how far had we developed ourself ?

and we talk of civilazation started in africa etc but whats there to show of it and what development was that if we compare european empires and african one we would say we were developing at the same rate ?

i agree to say between 1800 - 1900 we lost development as africans because we were all under the whiteman's rule but what of the our own period before the whitemen and the whiteman and his development before exploring africa? I THINK THAT WERE WE SHOULD FOCUS ON

The blackman can't think for themselves....when they were even in Egypt the first monument which is the sphinx or pyramids you see were built by Pheonician Decendents. And Berbers. The negrows were driven out during this time. We as Africans have to ask God what the problem is...and again our bloody culture that most Africans cling to are what's setting us back. We should do away with them and think in a most secular way.

Don't take Axum seriously. He is only mad at Africans because a lot of them do indeed bow down to Whites and have a vast inferiority complex when they should not have with all this vast and beautiful history. A lot of what he says about Africans not being proud of who they are is true. Why are black men and black women both chasing after whites as if they are God themselves. It gets ridiculous sometimes.

It pleases me sometimes though to see Africans who are into their own culture and KNOW about their culture and history, because I can confidently say, most Africans are indeed uneducated about their ancestors and their pasts.

You sir have summed up my life's existence on Nairaland. I have more respect for a poor man who carries himself with dignity than one who bows down and accepts and propagates the believe that he is inferior only to be rewarded with crumbs at the table.

My entire trolling is simply to show how Bantus have no self confidence. Sometimes I amaze myself. I remember so many threads with so many different fonts competing with me on who was better looking Bantus or Somalis, and they started to post mixed people, weave wearing bantus etc.

It amazing that how some are brain washed and they dont even see it. Some even argued that straight nose, and soft curly hair were typical Bantu features, and that no one could tell the difference between a Somali and a Nigerian. grin

Obviously I knew I would illicit these reactions simply cause I wanted to prove my hypothesis true. The rest of the trolling.....Lets just say I have some time on my hands as work requires little actual work, and there is no adult supervision when I show up to work. cheesy
