This summarizes all of the problem that Somalis have with each other and with other people. I stated this to your brother ArtanK but he keeps on denying it. Do you think it is a source of pride for a society to be still divided in sub clans in the 21st century? Or for a culture to be so conservative that it shuts everything from the outside even the good things?
Lol and you are proud of the hatred between you and your neighbors instead of embracing brotherhood with them and build something for yourselves. I am glad I have met you on this forum, now I know how shallow minded you people are.

He's exaggerating, if we really hated people, we wouldn't have helped many African states in their fight for independence - I'll expand on this when we're discussing political influence. We're not xenophobic but he is.

Japan has a more conserved culture than Somalis and look where that took them. We established great empires, sultanates and kingdoms, we went wrong in the civil war and let clans divide us but we would have achieved greater things had we been a little smarter in the 90s.

ArtanK is not Somali. The man has not a single blood of Somali blood running through his veins.

Post a real picture of yourself this time and we'll see who looks more Somali.

I don't know If I've said this before but Somalis share almost nothing with northern Sudanese people, they speak arabic, dress like them and behave like them. Most Somalis don't even speak Arabic. See even though it is taught in schools, it is not important in Somali lands. Somali culture is completely different from Arabic culture. I would understand it if you said Muslim Ethiopians/Eritreans but Sudanese are not where near similar to Somalis.

As for spreading Islam, in the medieval times. The walled city of Harar which was the capital of the Somali Adal empire was considered the 4th holiest city of Islam. Often being described as Madinat Al-Awliya by Muslim scholars.
I'm not aware of the kind of resistance the Fulanis faced in their endeavours but we faced the Portuguese at their prime (on land and on sea) and the oldest Christian kingdom on earth, Abyssinia and still defeated them in battle because they mistreated the Muslims. The Adal empire started out in Zeyla (which one of the oldest mosques in the world, Masjid al Qiblatein) and the Gulf of Tadjoura in the Red Sea and managed to conquer a territory larger than Nigeria within 2 years. Today, 40% of Ethiopians and half of Eritreans are Muslim, obviously I'm not going to claim that it is all down to Somalis but we played a huge part in spreading Islam in the horn.

Somalis expanded in territory, from being a small tribe in the mountainous regions near the Red Sea, to now settling deep inside Kenya. Around the same time as Adal, we had another Somali empire in the south called the Ajuuraan empire which traded and dealt with people from all over the world. From Christian Europeans to Indians, Malay and Chinese dynasties. There are also many scriptures pointing towards Abu Barakaat al-Barbari who was single-handedly responsible for spreading Islam in the Maldives being Somali and there are also many books stating the Ajuuraan possessed a large colony in Kinolhas (Maldives).

What I gather from your comment is a lot of resentment, mostly down to ignorance when it comes to the horn. As I said before, we are indifferent to all non-Somalis, whether you are dark or light. That's why the old age Somalis forbade the Europeans from marrying Somali women, their women giving birth on Somali soil and also called Arabs a bunch of women (Sayyid Mohammed) when it came to battle.

You know I get that you are trying to convince not most ( I know not all horners ) are not prejudicial to other Africans but it does not work. Believe it or not, I have come across you people, specially Ethiopians. Most Somalis that I have met was at the mosque, a place where we all tend to behave accordingly and share the food for Ramadan. But they too are prejudicial. Apparently you consider all non horners Bantus and find some pride in having enslaved some bantus from Tanzania in the past. I guess it is a way to reminiscent the lost "glory." And that is why you don't get along with anyone, white or non white.

Now as for the Fulanis and Islam the first state in west Africa to embrace and started getting engaged in spreading Islam was the Tekrur state which flourished around the same time the Ghana empire did. When it eventually collapsed due to the whole region being mostly traditionalist, most fulanis Muslims lived around Timbuktu. The manuscripts that date back to the 11th century have some written in fulfulde. I don't know if you have recently heard of them. The crazy thugs that claim to be Jihadists wanted to destroy them when they occupied Northern Mali in 2012. From the Mali state to the Songhai one that came afterward, Islam couldn't truly take a strong hold in the region even with the wars of Askia Muhamed who was Soninke. It took the Fulani Jihadist states that you can look up , to firmly establish the region in west Africa and have Muslims practice the faith in peace. Some of the notable scholar were Karamoko Alfa of Futa Jallon current day Guinea, Souleymane Baal and Abdul Karim Kane in Senegal. Souleymane Baal was known for abolishing slavery and for fighting the cast system. You also have Sheku Amadu in Mali, Usman Dan Fodio and Modibbo Adamawa in Nigeria and Cameroon. El Hadj Umar Tall was also part of the campaign. So you can see how extensive it was.

Fulanis have been in contact with Portuguese too. Actually the Denianko state, who was built by traditionalist fulani in Senegal had extenstive trade relations with Portuguese traders. The state is known as the Empire of Gran Pulo on Portuguese books of the time. Though the Portuguese never tried to invade it. The same was true with French and English on the coast of Guinea who had to pay fees to the Almamy of Futa Jallon to be allowed to continue their business. It was the internal fighting among West Africans which weakened their states that eventually allowed the westerners to overtake us. But even during colonialism, fulanis along with soninkes never stop spreading the religion, this time through peace. If maybe Northern Sudanese( yes, you told me you are not related, I knew that) and you guys, were more open and flexible, maybe the whole of Sudan and who knows Kenya would have been majority Muslim. A Muslim is not supposed to racist or rejecting, instead he approaches others to bring them to the religion.

You can't argue about political influence. Unless you want to go in the past but today there is no match. Kenyans, the Bantus that your people despise and look down upon so much, are the ones helping Somalia get back on its feet. Now that is a noble thing to do. But I think Kenya should not have let herself drawn into that madness. Even the US withdrew from it. Now they have to spent resources on security instead of economy. A big waste for them.
PS: reminiscing on all glory is a hell of thing. It consumes you. Part of it feeds the current problem we have in west Africa with people wanting to bring back Islamic states. But hey, what do you I know. Somalis are what they are, they will never change.
Re: Somalis, Ethiopians, Eritreans Are Superior by Omarbah: 4:21am On Apr 06, 2015
Have you ever heard of the Meji Restoration? Japan brought hell on the Samorai who wanted to keep the old social structure intact. During the restoration they embraced western lifestyle and technology. Yes they are conservative but they got rid of some of the bad aspects of their culture that keeps them from progressing. Currently, Abe their PM wants to reform their country to allow more women in the work force and even multiculturalism. Their new miss is biracial, that goes to tell you the direction they want their country to move toward. South Korea new door was also conservative but they changed a three decades ago and look at the results. Mao changed China, brutally yes, but the social structure changed. I want Fulanis to make electronics, to participate in innovating, to be part of the world economy and if that requires some profound changes, I am willing to do it. The worst thing one can do in the 21st century is stick to negative aspects of his culture, it eventually become your own worst enemy. If there is an example I want in the Muslim world for Fulanis, it is Turkey, a modern Muslim country that embraces science and technology and pushes for equal rights for everyone. None of that birth right bull crap or the stupidity of the Wahhabis. Y'all can have that.

Somali people keep their culture and compete on which clan is the most Somali by who fights the most in wars against outsiders, who has the best poetry, while Bantus pride themselves on who can slap themselves with the most bleach, who can wear the most expensive whig, which black man can marry a white woman....etc.

LOL are you hearing yourself? Islam didn't reach Kenya and South Sudan fully because Somalis were racists - That is beyond ridiculous man even Fulaman will agree.

I've read about the Takrur and I remember it being a subject of the Ghana empire and they joined the moravids in their endeavours in Andalusia afterwards. That's if I'm not mistaken. I will do some reading on the Fulani states that you didn't mention but I can comfortably say that not a single Fulani state that is comparable to the Ajuuraan, whether it is in terms of legacy, trade, territorial governance and influence. Bear in mind this is the empire that welcomed the evicted Muslims from Spain with open arms.

But anyway since we're name dropping, we had great scholars and leaders too starting with Imam Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Ghazi, Hasan and Abderahman Al-Jaberti, Sheikh Abadir Umar Ar-rida, Umar Dunya-Hawz, Garad Ahmed Hirabu to Sheikh Uwaiz Al-Barawi and Sayid Mohammed Abdillah Hassan. Harar has mosques dating back to the 9th century. Trust me when I say the importance of the horn when it comes to the spreading of Islam cannot be downplayed, not even a bit.

See this comment demonstrates what I really meant when I called you ignorant. You have no idea of the history between Kenya and Somalis, no idea of the Wagalla massacre (5000 dead Somalis in one day) or the Garissa massacre... oh yes, Garissa had 3000 of its Somali sons massacred in broad daylight.

It was Kenya's own decision to fight Alshabab inside Somalia so they could create a buffer state that would serve their interests from inside Somalia meanwhile they try to loot the oil in our maritime EEZ. That plan backfired horribly, Juba admin is now fully incorporated in the Somali gov and Alshabab is wreaking havoc in Kenya. That is not our fault, they tried to execute a devious plan and it failed. I sympathise with the Kenyan people for being misinformed and scapegoated by their government.

What I don't understand is how you can blindly choose sides in a place that you have no understanding of and has nothing to do with you... I'm really amazed.

So, no. Please do not venture in saying, "Not all Somalis are bad, Enlightenedsoul is xxxxxxxx", because I'm not interested in being falsely singled out as some type of 'rare' "good" out from my own ethnic group. I'm sure you can understand this sentiment as I imagine a "Not all Fulanis are bad, no, Fulaman is good" comment would rub you the wrong way on one of those Fulani herdsman killing threads I see on FP from time to time, no?

Here are the name of the names of the states:
The Imamat of Futa Toro,
The Imamat of Futa Jallon,
The Sokoto Caliphate and Amadamawa,
And Massina in Northern Mali.
By the way Tekrur was not a subject of Ghana though it was usually in conflict with them mostly due to religion.

It is ridiculous how you keep trying to convince to look away at the current Garissa massacre. Put aside what happened in the past, I am talking about what happened a few days ago. Are you going to tell me that those massacred were ethnic Somalis?
So is the Africa Union trying to "loot your oil too", was Uganda doing the same? Nobody is trying to get on your oil. But at least we can agree on one thing, Kenya should pull out. If they were after your oil, then you should be happy. As for me, I would be glad to see an emerging African economy get out of this mess on focus on its economy.
As for my encounters with your people, well I have had a few. There is one thing I despise about every African that I see in the states, when he or she starts referring to other Africans as " you Africans...". That is generally a bad sign. And the discussion are geared toward stereotypes. So I take my distances. This is how the Somalis that I have met. And if you have noticed, I keep saying I am glad having met axum and others on the net. Anonymity has this great thing about it. People can say what they want and mean without anyone to judge them. That's when their true self come out. And through these interactions, I have come to understand why Somalis everywhere they are, have tensions with the people they live with. I am sympathetic to Kenyans. You probably can't understand this but I do want Africans to advance in science and tech and gain more influence and respect in this world. Al Shabab is a distraction from that.

THE NILOTIC PEOPLE FROM WIKIPEDIA!

Physically, Nilotes are noted for their typically very dark skin color and slender, tall bodies. They often possess exceptionally long limbs, particularly vis-a-vis the distal segments (forearms, calves). This characteristic is thought to be a climatic adaptation to allow their bodies to shed heat more efficiently.

Sudanese Nilotes are regarded as one of the tallest peoples in the world. Roberts and Bainbridge (1963) reported average values of 182.6 cm (71.9" for height and 58.8 kg (129.6 lbs) for weight in a sample of Sudanese Shilluk.[21] Another sample of Sudanese Dinka had a stature/weight ratio of 181.9 cm/58.0 kg (71.6"/127.9 lbs), with an extremely ectomorphic somatotype of 1.6-3.5-6.2.

In terms of facial features, Hiernaux (1975) observed that the nasal profile most common amongst Nilotic populations is broad, with characteristically high index values ranging from 86.9 to 92.0. He also reported that lower nasal indices are often found amongst Nilotes who inhabit the more southerly Great Lakes region, such as the Maasai, a fact which he attributed to genetic differences.[22]

Additionally, it has been remarked that the Nilotic groups presently inhabiting the African Great Lakes region are sometimes also smaller in stature than those residing in the Sudan region. Campbell et al. (2006) recorded measurements of 172.0 cm/53.6 kg (67.7"/118.2 lbs) in a sample of agricultural Turkana in northern Kenya, and of 174.9 cm/53.0 kg (68.8"/116.8 lbs) in pastoral Turkana.[23] Hiernaux similarly listed a height of 172.7 cm (68" for Maasai in southern Kenya, with an extreme trunk/leg length ratio of 47.7.[22]

Smh you are not making any sense! We weren't talking about the recent Garissa attack so how on earth am I trying to make people look away from it?
You said that we don't like Kenyans so I mentioned some facts about the history between Somalia and Kenya then you say put aside the past?? WTF... Look back at your responses and count your contradictions. Your inconsistencies show that you're way out of your depth.
No life is worth less than another so why should we forget our people that were massacred at the hands of the Kenyan government and weep when they are massacred by terrorists? It would be ideal for us if the men behind the attack on the university were brought to justice but there is absolutely no way in hell we're just going to forgive and forget what happened on Wagalla airstrip in 1984 and in Garissa 1980.

Amisom has been responsible for thousands of civilian deaths and giving Alshabab competition on the number of Somalis killed. Last year, Human Rights Watch published a 77 page report about Amisom soldiers abusing and raping civilians in Somalia. The soldiers that were continually mentioned were Ugandan and Burundian soldiers.
I would be over the moon if AU left tomorrow, because I know that if Somali soldiers had received better training, equipment and same salary as the AU soldiers, Alshabab would have ceased to exist around 3 years ago. We really wish Kenya and all East african countries success and prosperity but it doesn't and shouldn't come at the expense of Somalia/Somalis.

You've proved me right when I said that your interactions with Somalis is bare minimal and I'd even go as far as saying that the only Somali you've ever had an exchange with is Axum since he's your only point of reference.

Your accusations of me trying to 'convince' people that we're not like Axum are just childish... I wasn't trying to convince anyone anything, I was trying to expose your ignorance and unreasonable bias. It was quite fun watching you go around in circles because you just can't admit that you were wrong.

I really expected better from a Fulani on Nairaland, considering the amount of Fulani bashing I've seen on here. Then again, this is the Internet, you see all kinds of weird shitt.

Here are the name of the names of the states:
The Imamat of Futa Toro,
The Imamat of Futa Jallon,
The Sokoto Caliphate and Amadamawa,
And Massina in Northern Mali.
By the way Tekrur was not a subject of Ghana though it was usually in conflict with them mostly due to religion.

I can also mention Somali sultanates like the Warsangeli, Bimaal, Geledi, Dervish state and of course my own Majertain Kingdom. But I want to know of the bigger Fulani states that took down European superpowers, had their own coinage, had trade links with the rest of the world and etc. The only state that is almost worth a mention is the Sokoto Caliphate which dispersed after a mere 100 years. It is no match to Adal empire which existed for 600-700 years or the 500 year-old Ajuuraan empire in south and central Somalia.

Let's not get off track here. I mention spreading Islam for the fact that some Somalis think that other Muslims from Africa are either recent Muslims or that through they were the only ones to spread the religion on the continent. And the states that I have mentioned had their own currency, conducted trade with the rest of world. Both the French and the British traded with those. The British had set up trading posts along the coast of Guinea and paid fees to the Almamy of Futa Jallon.
Now tell me what European "superpoowers" did you bring "down" (those are your own terms) and I will tell you how wrong you are.

I did not say you don't like Kenyans, I said you do not get along with any community you live with. And you can't prove that wrong. Whether it is black Americans, white Americans or British. You have proven with this post that you simply do not care about the recent attack in Garissa which proves my point. Members of the Somali community outside in the west do support them whether morally and/or financially.

That is highly unlikely. After many years of fighting it took the AU intervention to drive Al Shabab out of the capital and bring in a minimum of peace. We can discuss all the possible "ifs" but let's face the reality for what it is.

I had a post here about African renaissance where I had constructive discussions with other brothers from the continent, that's the kind of convo I like. As for the Fulani bashing, well, the new President Elect of Nigeria is a full blooded Fulani. If Nigerians truly hated Fulanis, they would not have voted for three of them. Nigeria has had three elected Fulani presidents notably Shehu Shagari , Umar Yar'Adua and Buhari. To give you a perspective, this country has had five elected presidents since the end of the civil war. Three of them happen to be Fulanis. So you are right, we see all kind of stuff on the net. I can care less about a bunch of western kids that have African parents have to say about Fulanis.

Hmmm ok what does this mean then?

Kenyans, the Bantus that your people despise and look down upon so much, are the ones helping Somalia get back on its feet.

And how exactly have I proven that I don't care about the Garissa Uni attack? Just because I said I won't forget the past doesn't mean I don't care about the 148 people that died last week. Why do I have to either be with or against Alshabab/Kenya? Your problem is that you're doing a lot of guess work and it is not working in your favour

Somalis get along just fine with everybody - you can't refute that statement either. All you have is a school fight and Axum's trolling.

Omarbah:

You mean the AU soldiers that were commanded to a 1km road from the airport to the presidential palace. AU only started the fighting after 2011, before that, they allowed Alshabab to be in control of most of the south and central regions and the only entities actually fighting Alshabab were Somali clan militias.

Btw AU didn't drive them out of the capital, they were in possession of most of the city until they left suddenly without a single bullet being fired.

Omarbah:

Did you even click the link? and do you ever google stuff? We are not talking about Sudan! Jubaland is got it's name from the River Juba that runs across the southern regions of Somalia.

Notice how they tried to accelerate the oil exploration in disputed area after they created a vassal state within Somalia.

Pardon me for having a hard time believing you but you are full of inconsistencies. If you truly had so many encounters with Somalis, you would have shared them the first time I asked you. You didn't have a hard time repeating whatever Axum said so why was it so hard to recall your "encounters" when they were needed? I call that bullshitt.
