This is just one classic complaint about online dating.

With the world evolving digitally everyday, most people now buy and sell online, recharge our phones, order Sharwama, pay bills, etc. It’s not a secret that dating is also done online; thanks to the million and one social media platforms and online dating sites and it is also one of the top ways people meet nowadays.

While it works for some, or at least the very few who are lucky to meet the right person, some others may not be so lucky. We therefore compiled some of the biggest problems of dating or finding a date online.

The Scammers:

This is talking about those with false profiles eagerly waiting for you to click on them and start a conversation. And when you do, you meet someone so amazing you begin to wonder where he/she has been all your life. Well, until the stories and demands hit you: “My sister-in-law’s youngest brother’s granddaughter needs money for emotional surgery, please help me”…

The point is, these one are professional scammers. The solution is to use common sense when such a character comes your way.

Photo-shopped Profiles:

“Eureka” you exclaim when you finally see a profile that matches your taste. You cannot believe your good fortune because this person is not only real; he/she also shares your taste in music, movies, and books. So you chat for a while and decide to meet and … you see someone greatly altered from the pictures you have, someone not as cute, someone whose social images have undergone level 100 Photoshop.

In essence, pictures are deceptive. So when you see that fantastic profile picture, don’t start celebrating your catch. Check the person out on other online platforms, or better still video-call in daytime, to ensure that the image is not different from the person.

To Date or Not To Date:

Well this problem occurs every day too, as even when you meet someone in real life, you would not necessarily know if they are right for you at that moment.

In the online world, this becomes an even bigger problem especially when you have many prospective ‘boos’. And because you have not met them physically, you’re not certain who you actually want. So you start pruning away those you deem unfit for even something as superficial as ‘not looking sexy enough’. And when you end up picking the ‘sexy’ one above the intelligent one, it usually ends in regrets, thanks to your shallowness.


Expectations:

A lot of people scourge the online dating platforms for quick and easy sexual gratification. The idea that getting easy lays through the Internet is not far-fetched, and it poses a problem for those with genuine interest in meeting other people that would lead to a meaningful relationship. So one may be unfortunate to meet with such a prowling predator.

Communication:

One major challenge with online dating is communication. In real life, most of our daily communication is non-verbal and involves a lot of body language. On social media, you cannot communicate through body language, and this becomes a problem because these non-verbal clues will give us insight as to if the other person ‘digs’ you or not.

In conclusion, this article is not discouraging online dating. It just highlights some precautions you should take if you are dating online, or you’re planning to.
