In Ogun state, before the advent of APC, PDP led govts alwys say there is no money and they eben borrow to pay workers so, there won't be much developments. When the APC came in, the development was massive and they weren't borrowing to pay salaries. And the money they borrowed were judiciously interpreted as structures of development. When asked where he source 'these' money from after then 'no money' national anthem of the PDP, he replied: There is money everywhere and every angle. All you need to do is curtail corruption, reduce the amount you spend on your govt, follow up on how money disbursed to ministries are spent, and u will be surprised at the abundance you have. The monies your cronies make in the creeks that they chop alone is enuff to do many unimaginable things for the benefit of the masses. 17 Likes |

Bayswater: Any attempt to increase taxes at the federal level will not pass. The Nigerian Business community and the financial donation states will aggressively fight it. Remember most of the APC states are what I call collection state, vat increase will not affect, because they are paying almost zero right now. Only Lagos is going to feel the effects, and they rather see a State tax increase than a federal one.. The opposition states will do the Nigerian thing and call it a tribal economic sabotage. 2 Likes |

Please include the value of what we lose in oil theft. I hope you know that would be part of our earnings when Buhari comes on board? And by the way, believe we run on deficit at your own peril. 3 Likes |

atlwireles:Even if they increase tax to 10 or 15% they won't be able to realise the needed money to fund the program. However, let's wait for them to announce increase in VAT and other tax, then we will analyse the new program and educate Nigerians on the consequences. 2 Likes |

The op raise salient points and it is also proper to start the debate now. Nigeria is an on-going concern, the fact the team Buhari are not ready to debate their agenda doesn't stop other people exercing the freedom. That said, I personally don't like welfarism as policy, as the alternative forgone are usually capital projects! So if you ask me to choose between feeding school children and building and equipping schools, I'll choose the latter! If I have to make a choice between paying allowance to graduates, indigent population, etc and constructing roads, and railways, and more ports, I'll choose the latter. I supported fuel subsidy removal, and I'm against other welfare programs that subsidize consumption, simply because subsidy today, means lower quality future. It means that for our today, we are sacrificing tomorrow. And as the op has noted the cost of these welfare policy is just too homongous, even if we can afford it (which obviously we can't), it simply not sustainable, and the people of course will never be satisfied! Alas, APC/Buhari have promised, they must deliver! Chikena!! 7 Likes 1 Share |

musing2: This is Nigeria, just look at states producing revenue today and the ones collecting the revenue, then you will understand why democracy is going to be the best tool to restructure this country. Nothing makes people more angry, till you touch the money in their bank accounts. Some people cannot vote themselves other people's money, not in a country like Nigeria. 1 Like |

it is very clear that with this welfare package on ground, enough attention will not be giving to capital projects, and this is what we actually need in reviving our dieing economy not this welfare nonsense .God help Nigeria! 2 Likes |

PointB:Thank You for your input. Any social welfare package that has to do with forgoing Capital projects and incuring loans to fund is not only unsustainable but it is laughable, regrettable and a disservice to the lives of the citizens and the unborn. Before a government should talk of Welfare program, it should first strenghten institutions, put lots of infrastructures in place, create a viable conducive environment, ensure that at least 90% of "workable" population are gainfully employed and not underemployed, it's annual budget must be on a Surplus rather than deficit and build institutions for sustainability. Then the government may Budget a percentage of its annual surplus for whatever welfare package it deemed fit to take care of the less privileged in the society. This is how to build a sustainable society 7 Likes 1 Share |

Leave this man alone nah. Since when did you become an economist? He's won, he and his party have four years to deliver otherwise people shall vote them out like they did to PDP. I believe PDP shall be back in 2019 or latest 2023. Leave Buhari alone jarey. Let's see whether he's going to deliver or fail. Let him preside over the affair first before we judge him, I think it's too early to condemn his policy. Let's see the magic he's going to perform before we criticize him. One thing is certain, PDP shall be back. PDP Power. 4 Likes |

barcanista:I'm not interested in the official figure. They tell you just what the Government wants you to believe. I insist your knowledge is limited to what you read on paper. By the way, 25% of the content of our annual budgets are duplications and unnecessary. Now read this: According to President Goodluck Jonathan, 300,000-400,000 barrels of oil per day, or more than 10% of all Nigeria's production, is being lost at a cost to the state and oil companies of around £1bn a month – more than is spent on education and the health of the nation's 168 million people. Not only is Nigerian oil theft helping to keep the world price of oil high, it is causing corruption and social disorder, says the president.http://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2013/oct/06/oil-theft-costs-nigeria Now, that's something. 2 Likes |
