If Yobe, borno require just 1% to pass the entrance exams to Unity schools how can a first class graduate ever come out from the two states? It's time the truth be told that merits count! Why must the ladder be shortened for the North since 1954 till date? 61yrs of shouting quota system, federal character, catchment area, north this north that! This is why I want this country dissolved!! Merit must be entrenched above all. North be must be forced to grow up if they want one Nigeria!!

I was surprised when the dude said 2nd class graduate from the North can challenge a 1st class from the South. Though, I'm not given to classes of degrees because I know the length people go, I couldn't help but laugh at his dellusion.

It's not only about having first class. After applying with your first class degree, you go through a battery of tests and interviews.

Even after that, you have to get admission for yourself in one of the top 25 universities in the world.

Are you for real that the standard of education in the North has risen? And Yobe state still require 2/200 ie 1% as cut off mark for admission into Unity colleges? How do you explain that?

What the House has requested the PRESSID to submit are in order. The requested evidence will go a long way in establishing whether fairness was employed in selecting the beneficiaries.

At least if you say no first class candidates from a certain part of the country applied, then present the list of applicants to verify your claim. As simple as ABC.
I work in NUC and I can tell u that pressid is purely on merit.I have seen students from ABU who are of northern extraction that bagged the award but majority are southwest,southeast etc.the purpose of the scheme is to sort out the best brains and trained them in the best schools abroad who will in turn return back to Nigeria to impact their knowledge for the social economic progress of the country.mind u,its targeted for specific areas of discipline.if merrit. Were to be jettisoned in favour of quota system,then I can tell u that the aim of Pressid is already defeated.

Stop reasoning like this. It is a merit based scholarship scheme, and not some useless Federal Character based sharing scheme. What we should be debating here is the openness of the selection process and not exclusion of some people.

The prof said only first class graduates were involved. Take note that he said it in defence to the accusation of bias. What does that mean?

Let him produce the list of applicants, evidence of advertisement and the criteria for making the top list.

It is farfetched to imply that no northerner would make that list.

Let the FG forget this whole Federal Character issue and encourage meritocracy,it'll go a long way in encouraging everyone to be up and doing.. Putting Federal character first only discourages those that are willing to be educated, makes life harder for them and encourages those that are not willing to be educated,also makes life easier for them...

i agree with you dear but where i have a problem is in this.

If a pupil from anambra state will have to score at least 137 to gain admition into unity school (fed gov col) & a pubil from zamfara will score 20 to get admition into the same school.
Dont you think that tells us more than we are hearing?

The difference between 137 & 20 is 117... Some of us would want to believe that the north is not backward but what we see in reality affects our believe about the north & attitude towards education.

While it is true that those who haven't been to the north will have no idea of the rot up there, your claim of a second class in north challenging a first class from south is folly, because the northerner always lag behind in every merit based federal programme.

Who exactly is favoring their side here ?? The majority of last year winners are Yorubas from the SW, your own region. And no person from Bayelsa won last year. I guess GEJ wanted to favour Yorubas and disfavor his own Ijaw people in Bayelsa.

If you have a 1st class relatively recently from a Nigerian University, you are less than 30 yrs old, and have completed your NYSC, you are eligible to apply for the PRESSID scholarship. Every single one of them (they are usually an average of 600) then writes a test, and then ONLY the top 109 candidates in that exams are selected STRICTLY ON MERIT. That was why Ogun and SW had the highest No of beneficiaries while Bayelsa, and most of the NW and NE had none or very little.

But people like you still complain cos your lazy and indolent 'masters' are complaining too. Why am I even surprised?? Didn't your Lord Buhari get into the Military on the strength of his Principal' recommendation cos he was Hausa-Fulani when others from the other parts of the country had to present their WASSCE results?? Even when he eventually presented the result and failed Maths, wasn't he made an Official, rose to the top in that institution and was just elected again to the very top by people like you?? Yet you chaps are the 1st to complain about the condition of Nigeria.

thank you some times ago I wanted to give masters degree a shot in one of the institutions in the east, I abandoned it out of repulsiveness you can't buy lecturers in the northern universities but down here my brother.some graduates with 2:1 in esut can't communicate in English well

People just see the north as backwards even in rankings I watch the way people here are biased in Universities ranking, I will state this without any fear of contradiction and doubt that top federal universities in the North give grades on merit strictly let me be specific ABU for instance it is what you give that'll be given to you take this statement anywhere you cannot graduate with a 2.1 if you're not qualified to but you guys in the west and east don't know this if you've got a close relation coming from Lagos, Enugu or Other state ask them, you can even take the issue to NUC.
