proxillin: The reason ur engine is running high is because ur car never gets to its operating temperature, its very simple. This is because ur thermostat was removed and u probably installed a double cell radiator and ur fans have been connected to run constantly. This way water constantly flows in and out of ur engine which keeps it too cool (engines are meant to run hot at certain temperature range). Your car is running rich and consuming more fuel. Your car will only run normal when the temperature gets to its optimum. Ever wondered why cars run high at first start in the day? (especially cars on factory specs). This is to warm up the engine and catalytic converter. The thermostat is closed which makes the engine warm faster so that within 2 mins the car will gets to its operating temperature and the rpm will normalize. 1 Like |

tonychristopher: I made a simple research online to get the extreme temperatures in the US. I got a highest of 56.7 °C and lowest of −62.1 °C according to wikipedia. Compared to the highest recorded temperature in Nigeria 47.2 °C, the lowest is beyond comparison. By this there is no temperature in Nigeria that cannot be found in the US. Why would i modify a car made in US based on temperature or humidity? It is pointless and baseless. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

johnny1980:A thermometer or temperature sensor picks temperature values depending on the state of the engine. The regional/enviroment temperature is inclusive. For example, i noticed that the thermostat activate the fan quicker in the hot sun compared to early morning cold start. The thermostat understand its work perfectly, at heavy traffic, the fan picks up immediately as if it was directly connected |
Re: The Reason Why That Your Tokunbo Car Keeps Overheating Here In Nigeria by ZIMDRILL(m): 10:56am On May 15, 2015 |
proxillin: ok the car's revs are high due to the fact that the thermostat was removed so the ECU is getting the reading from the temperature sensor that the engine is cold, so the ECU is adding more fuel so that the engine temperature will raise to the desired temperature since your thermostat is missing the temperature will never go to the desired operating temperature this is what we call ENGINE RUNNING COLD becoz the temperature will never reach the car's manufacture operating temperature |

You're quite right but lets not come to conclusion on the driver driving an over-heated car till it finally came to a stop because we do not know the situation the driver found him/herself when the over heating started. A driver on Third Mainland Bridge Lagos, will not stop even with four tires blown up for fear of being robbed and killed. First instinct will be to drive out of danger before taking any measure. The same thing might have happened to this Honda car driver and not necessarily out of neglience abatically: |

johnny1980: You must be a very silly person for quoting me and commenting in a rather rude manner. If you're blind and can't see all my comments in this thread, the picture I uploaded from toyota and lexus owners manuals, and previous cartalk thread where even people who have worked in automobile manufacturing companies, mechanical engrs and scientists have written against thermostat removal and altering cooling systems in cars then you are of all men most miserable. 6 Likes |

Re: The Reason Why That Your Tokunbo Car Keeps Overheating Here In Nigeria by adanny01(m): 11:41am On May 15, 2015 |
femi4: The thermostat does not control the operation of the fan. The coolant temperature sensor and ECU (brain box) actually does. The thermostat only stops water flow at cold start so the temperature can climb up quickly. After that, its work is done unless the temperature drops less that the specified on the thermostat usually between 70-90 degrees Celsius. 1 Like |

johnny1980:you sir have disappointed me. Are you going to tropicalize your car? The argument here is to discourage people from doing all the OP suggested. Ever wonder why people are always here asking for price of new engine and complaining about fuel economy? OP even pours oil treatment into his engine. Now that is another level of abuse. 3 Likes 3 Shares |

tonychristopher:Damn! I can't believe this stuff you are handing down here! Let me start with number 1 - US painted car of 15 years standing is far better than a 6mths 'oven bake' you'll get at Ojota or Gbagada. I'm saying this from experience with my first Camry. I fell into one advert here by a Nairalander to 'oven bake' the whole car just because it had a small dent at the back and front side, while the rest of the body are still glossy. 6 months after the 'oven baking', the whole paint collapsed and became worse than it were before painting, any slight touch from kids leaves lines all over the body. Number 2 - Any dashboard that melts here (Murano, Camry 2007 etc ) is purely factory fault. Other cars are doing great. Number 3 - This is the biggest killer of cars in the country today. My two cars have never had any slight issue with over heat, while I've seen people that followed this daft idea of changing radiator to double cell/removing thermostat run from pillar to post as the car issues escalates increasingly there-after. Caveat! Don't follow this Dude's advise if you want to enjoy your car/s 3 Likes |

femi4: You want me to teach you? OK lets go. Thermostat is a temperature control device that maintains temperature at a preset point. Let me play with ur intelligence a little. There are 3 pictures attached. The first is of a typical car thermostat (hope you've seen it before), the 2nd is of a typical car temp sensor and the 3rd is a typical car cooling fan. Q1. Is the first an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device? Q2. Is the second an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device? Q3. Is the third an electrical, mechanical or electromechanical device? Q3. Which among the first two devices can be connected by means of electrical connection that can control the third? Q4. Explain means by which 1 and 3 can be connected directly or indirectly? You wan do elementary Physics, abeg answer while i remain glued to my PC to see your reply.

Places like Kuwait, Qatar, and Arizona, get temperatures in excess of 50 degrees Celsius during summer, and yes, they drive cars there with the AC on 24/7. And the thermostats ain't touched. In fact, you hardly ever get to open your hood in months, except at the service station. |

eaglechild: It burnt my infiniti's engine too (exactly, "Before I could cough the mechanic had yanked off the thermostat. ". And he was damn so convinced. I was so livid, 'cause the SUV was gulf specs! If the thermostat wasn't yanked off in Dubai, I wondered why he will have to go do something that st00.pid The engine 'fried' while a dumb friend of mine was taking it to Sagamu. I had to replace the engine entirely, after first being wrongly advised it could be repaired (wasted 70k on that). Then had to go buy a replacement at Ladipo. Learnt the hard way . . . 10 years on, it still hurts. 1 Like |
