When I watched that season again, I realised Robb had it coming. He felt he could just do anything he likes and get away with it. His mom warned him, he didn't listen.

He didnt have it coming, he didnt just do as he liked, blame D& for that. The Red Wedding didn't happen because Robb broke a betrothal. Betrothals are broken, its not the first time, better men than Walder have betrothals broken. That is like a cover up story and shouldnt even lead to a mass murder like that.

The main reason it happened was because the lannisters wanted him dead, the bolton's are treacherous and walder frey was angry about what Robb did. The marriage was about an alliance with the frey's and they were promised something and Robb turned his back on walder. This made it easy for the lannisters to convince walder and promise him something else and also the bolton's.

They thought Robb had lost the war when the Lannisters and Tyrells formed an alliance and wuth the IronBorn at moat Cailin, tgey thought hus cause was lost. Thing is before he died, Robb formulated a plan to hit Moat Cailin from the North South and West, and might have worked if he had been, but neither Roose nor Walder knew this. Now the Red Wedding didnt happen because of the betrothal because Daven Lannister who was supposed to marry a Redwyne also broke his betrothal to marry a Frey. The fact that the Freys kept denying it and saying it was Robb who attacked them first tells you a lot. Now Walder is a lousy hypocrite for saying he broke a betrothal, even though he was okay with Daven breaking his to marry a Frey, and Joy Hill. He and Roose formulated the Wedding because they didnt want to be on the losing side, with the Tyrell host and ironborn at moat cailin. Even tywin didnt expect this, it was to be an arrow or poison, but they went to far, and it wasnt just killing a bunch of guest at dinner, when all his host present was massacred as well. Any justification for the Red Wedding is whitewashing of Tywin or Walder, with the sole reason that they are who they are. Now it broke that social contract that Westeros had, the reason you dont kill a guest under your roof after giving bread and salt, is the same reason you dont kill your opponent during a parley, once this happens and isnt punish, it becomes a norm. It looked down upon, that now peoole say things like "Sheathe your sword. Are you a Frey ?" Another Red Weddng is on its and who is going to accuse who. Though the Lannister/Bolton/Frey got something out of the wedding, their victory is short lived. They havent shown it in 4 nor halfway through 5. Its like it wasnt a crime or a bad thing. They just moved on.
