Bros, I am on the same side with you. If I come out and say AS boy don't marry your AS girl friend, people will come and start quoting me to say why they are the exception to the rule and they have been married for donkey years.

This thing called love is a funny thing. All I'm trying to say is let people be wise in all their decision. One love everyone.

Sickle cell is a blood disorder that is hereditary n starts from when one is born,
So what happened? Why did mine wait till I was 8 before it started?

Funny enough, my mum said I was never sick as a baby n the only problem I had was measles,
I grew curious n asked my doctor,
After a number of 'no idea' replies he came up with an hypoyhesis where he claimed that my healthy look n lack of crisis or sickle cell symptoms till age 8 was as a result of extensive breast feeding.
Still don't know if his hypothesis is wrong or right.

....the genetic reason why you were not sick till 8 was because your gamma globin genes on your chromosome 11 were not switched till age 8 (as when due normally between the age of 6 months to 1 year) probably due to some factors in your gene Locus Control Region (LCR). These Gamma Globin genes are responsible for the production of Fetal (when you were a foetus) Hemoglobin at which rate (normally between 30 to 33 percent) helps to alleviate the Clinical Conditions of People with Sickle Cell Disease. So......at Birth to Age 8....you had adequate Fetal Hemoglobin which prevented you from falling sick.......at age 8 the Gamma Globin Genes were switched off and the Beta Globin Genes were switched on (responsible for production of the normal or sickle hemoglobin)......your Fetal Hemoglobin dropped below 10 percent or close to zero.....and you started falling sick

Before I read.. I'm joining the campaign..

Nlanders: Let's roll it..

It's the Sickle Cell Awareness Day!
Simply put, sickle cell anaemia is a hereditary genetic disease, which got its
name from the crescent-shaped red blood cells. These cells, instead of moving
freely through the blood vessels, tend to stick to the sides or walls of the blood
vessels thereby resulting in blockages. In the short term, it can cause severe
pains or infections while its long term consequences could be organ damage,
strokes and early deaths.
¤We advocate for investments in finding effective treatments that will cripple
this genetic disease as well as affordable care acts for the “Sickle Cell Warriors''.
With the right information about its management, people living with the
disorder can stay healthy and live long.

Why not join the Campaign and prevent the death of a100,000 infant every year
from the disease... and 40million Nigerians with the genetic disorder?

...if both parents aren't AS, so hw cum u re SC? Dis giving me great tot nw?
That got me wondering too. Because, ordinarily, the worst that could happen with the combination(AA+AC) was for two out of every four children to be AC,while the remaining two will be AA. So,where did the 'S' come from?...Except the Parents are AS and AC...without this, then this is strange...could there be any scientific explanation to this?
Meanwhile, I wish all the warriors in the house God's protection. Cheers.
