I think the best option for SAN would be a LHP/AUX hybrid, something that can preform both the LHP and Auxiliary role.. Maybe that way we can kill 2 birds with one stone, thus a ship that can fufill the requirement for project millennium and a Drakies replacement.

The Americans are working on a fantastic concept at the moment

May bring affordable maritime assault solutions to the whole of the 3rd world

Very interesting but I feel a ship like this should be designed and built in SA, that fit our requirments perfectly, besides we built Drakies , we can build another Auxiliary by our selves again..

The original purpose of this photo thread is to promote African military and security forces and prove to the world that we are not the incapable continent that the rest of the world think we are in military performance.

When the Boko Harm-Chibok girls kidnap happened in 2014, America and Europe insisted that Nigerian military needs their air forces to help Nigeria find the girls, but Nigeria replied that we may be blacks, but here in Africa we have air force technology equal to the best in NATO air forces and makes NAF aircraft equally capable as USAF/RAF in doing world class ISTAR operations to find the Chibok girls anywhere they may be hidden in Nigeria.

The western powers deliberately and fraudulently insisted Nigeria has no such capability and we were accused of nonchalant attitude to the kidnap saga, even small NATO countries that have no armed drones and ISTAR aircraft in the class of Nigeria, were boasting that they can help Nigeria with the equipment they themselves do not even have.

Heavy pressure of global politically motivated #BringBackOurGirls campain forced Nigeria to accept 'foreign help' in the ISTAR operations.

It became a drama to prove who is superior between USAF Predator drones/UAVs, RAF Sentinel R1 aircraft (reputed as the world's best ISTAR platform), and NAF ATR-42 Surveyor.

At different times, each air force carried out the search for as long as they wanted, they all achieved the same result. Nobody's ISTAR technology proved superior to the others. USAF, RAF, NAF all got same results, Chibok girls not found.

This thread showcases African military at their best of capabilities in photos, with some little details of information attached to explain the photos if necessary.

In line with the standard rule/format of this forum/thread, I posted the NAF ATR-42 Surveyor ISTAR aircraft as an African pride, with highlights of it's awesome world class capabilities attached to it, I have no need of posting any proof of the data that is already freely available all over the internet, I have no need to promote Italian manufacturers technical data/specs sheet, we are not here to do marketing for any private company.

The four people here, who stood up against my post on ATR-42 should be ashamed that they reacted in that offensive manner to an African pride of a platform, if I had said the ATR-42 Surveyor aircraft with that long list of capabilities belongs to Japan, those four people will not question it.

Well, I will clear the air for the world to see. Here are manufacturers official technical data sheets for the NAF ATR-42 Surveyor, it's Gabbiano T200 radar has 407 km range or 220 NM and has air to sea, air to land/ground, air to air radar modes, 360 degree radar view, 200 targets multiple simultaneous scan/tracking, it is built for primary MPA/ISTAR and secondary AWACS role. Anyone with further personal problems with NAF ATR-42 surveyor capabilities can go do personal research at home and stop disturbing the peaceful flow on this photo thread.

Thank you all, long live Africa !

Thanks Frum for the great insight! Ive always wondered about this after seeing a few photos of SANDF soldiers with non issued rifles, like your photo of the Oak with the CR-21 for example.

Just a last question I would like to ask, mate! If you don't mind.

I was on one of SAAF forums topics where they were discussing the new upgraded R4, and one of the members posted a photo of his R4 issued by the SANDF(not sure if his a reservest or a regular Soldier) he said every thing except the magazine was issued to him by the SANDF.I've seen a lot more soldiers using these newer R4s these days...well definitely in Potchefstroom at least, what I want to know is are these new R4s becoming more standard issue per se? or are they still for the select few for exp those that are more proficient as you said.

PIC of the rifle issued to the soldier

The idea is that every soldier will be issued upgraded rifles. But the army, correctly in my view, has insisted that every grunt prove himself/herself worthy of the new kit. Some people are so used to iron sights they'll never adapt to scopes. At the end of the day, everyone will have a re-tooled and upgraded rifle, accessories are just a bonus.

French considering developing tech that will allow them to drop JDAM's from their c-130's

This plus a paletted and stabilized 30mm gun firing through a side door would prove a pretty epic solution for a cheap gunship

Aahh ok!! I agree 100% If you're proficient enough to use a rifle with a scope(+accessories) then you're issued one, if not you get the regular R4.

But I also guess its down to preference as well, I know of quit a few target shooters that shoot better with iron sights than with a scope!

Take that African pride rubbish and tell it to the Chibok girls.

Those capabilities are not those of your ATR42, not only that but your "source" discusses the capabilities of multiple different radar sets. ATR42 is a simple MPA platform, not ISTAR, not ELINT and most certainly not AWAC

And your ATR42 is the same as the Italian version
http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/83981/nigeria-orders-two-atr42s-for-maritime-patrol.html

with a search range of 330km
http://www.casr.ca/id-fwsar-italy-2.htm

Whilst its roles are: Maritime Patrol (surveilance) and pollution detection. With ISAR mentioned only vaguely as is the detection of radar emissions (most fighter jets can also do this) - no mention of ISTAR, no mention of ELINT, no mention of AWAC
