What most do not know is that GEJ's railway was a bastardization of the project began by OBJ. OBJ completed the design, awarded the contract and started the project only for GEJ to bastardize the project with an obsolete design while stealing loads of money

Please give us a break. OBJ just indirectly said that he didn't start anything and couldn't have started it. Stop trying to cover up for him, also remind us of one of OBJ achievements apart from third term schemes & scandals.

http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/fg-commences-passenger-service-on-warri-ajaokuta-railway-soon/75871/
The work commenced in the IBB days and was abandoned without any progress. The 276km ajaokuta -warri rail project was revived under OBJ as part of OBJ's rail modernisation project and a large chunk of the line (over 90%) was built by julius berger before it was abandoned again. As part of the modernisation project, the abuja to kano standard rail project was also awarded by OBJ but it was cancelled when Yaradua took over due to the fraud in the contract award. After Yaradua's death, GEJ revived the project again and completed the remaining 22km of the ajaukuta line connecting it to warri. GEJ also re-awarded and completed the abuja to kaduna standard rails. These are presently the only 2 standard rail lines in west africa. My point is simple, why not follow the masterplan and give Nigerians modern trains?... why did they have to deviate after the abuja-kaduna rail and instead, start renovating the 1903 obsolete narrow gauge rails between lagos and kano which cannot support new trains?... Now we have the useless archaic trains which take 2 days to travel from lagos to kano, yet people celebrate this nonsense by saying it is air-conditioned. Meanwhile the trains are already derailing all over the place. angry

Ask Sijuwade. He's still in office I presume. But I'm certain the response you will get is simple, the same reason you find more second-hand cars, planes and ships transporting us and our goods up and down Nigeria every day, economics. The OBJ plan may be lofty but how realistic and attainable. You yourself attest to the fact that OBJ in 8 years could only deliver 200+ kilometers of 'world class' rail line. So what do you expect in 6 years 150km? And where will 400km of national rail line do? Nothing. Is it not better to renovate the existing akpu line, get it to work first before seeking caviar to eat. Is it the train you want or the service.

Look my friend, development is about incremental improvements not Sunday afternoon supermarket wishlists. No government has the time or the resources to turn Lagos to London or Daura to Dubai. All what we should seek is consistency, sincerity of purpose and hardwork. OBJ started some, completed some. GEJ started some, completed some. If PMB decides to abandon all, starts all and completes none he will be adjudged a failure. No sentiments.

Just like I mentioned earlier, the positive economic, political and social impacts of those 'mere' actions are not visible or quantifiable. So it is very okay if you and I don't see them. As typical Africans, all we can see are the things that immediately put food on our tables.

Biko, if an action can give birth to "positive economic, political and social impacts" (to use your words) even if those 'mere' actions are not visible or quantifiable, then it means such impact can be verified.

Please provide verifiable proofs of the positive economic, political and social impact that OBJ's 'mere' actions had on the lives of ordinary Nigerians, when he was in power. undecided

As for seeing the things that put food on our tables, I make no apologies for that. Are you advocating that we should turn a blind eye to those things, if they are legitimate and appropriate, and end up dying of hunger?? shocked

Bros, it is those things which put food on our tables, shelter over our heads, clothes on our backs, healthcare at our doorstep, education in our schools and jobs which provide a regular, sustainable paycheck, that enable us to have something called a "quality of life." Others would call it "contributing to our well-being." undecided

If you want to continue dwelling on the esoteric plane, feel free.

Do u know that Buhari loot more than $20bn as PTF chairman? If it lie let look into OBJ inherited fund from PTF 1999.

Just like I said, it is only typical for people not to see underlying efforts, most people are totally incapable of seeing or appreciating the big picture.

The moneys spent by Yaradua and GEJ for those projects you laud them for, a chunk of those moneys were saved by OBJ. OBJ met a foreign reserve of $5billion dollars when he assumed office but he grew that amount to over forty something billion dollars by the time he left office. OBJ also created the ECA account and grew it from zero to over $20 billion dollars by the time he left office. OBJ also wiped our external debts from over thirty something billion dollars to less than 5 billion. The question I ask is, what did other administrations do apart from reducing these savings to zero with next to nothing to show for it?... Yet we celebrate them and claim OBJ was a useless baboon.

No doubt that OBJ was a corrupt man too, but I find it rather repulsive that he is being adjudged as having achieved absolutely 'nothing' for Nigeria.

plz don't make assertions that lacks credibility. If GEJ only implemented the designs of OBJ, why should the same OBJ refer to the project as lacking vision?
Plz make comments that has some atoms of sanity.

Yeah.....OBJ paid back money, and OBJ saved money. What next?? shocked Is he a banker or a thrift collector?

Other countries would have taken part of those funds, and invested it in developing infrastructure to make life better for their citizenry, creating jobs to improve the lot of their people, improving healthcare to prevent (or at least, reduce) mortality, security to safeguard internal and external borders from aggressors and driving commerce to make it easier for companies to do business.

On the social and financial well-being index, how were Nigerian citizens faring under OBJ?

Am not saying his successors were perfect, but OBJ's holier-than-thou attitude makes me puke!

This is very wrong and a bad comment. this isnt how to appreciate. GEJ did his best under the circumstances with funds available. He really did well. OBJ is just envious of GEJ. I saw Sanusi riding the rail in Kano and they were all happy.

And why have you never considered that it could be proper planning?... Which leader likes to just sit down and watch as his people suffer even when there's money in the account?

Do you really think OBJ not awarding contracts randomly (even though the funds were piling up in the reserves), do you honestly think that is an act of a man who didn't know where he was going to?

So how do you compare that with the one who has finally spent al the money yet we still remain where we are?... Think bro.. try and see the bigger picture. Don't try to view this only through the lense of politics; this is common sense.

Once again I would say, it is not your fault that you do not understand this. It is not in our nature as Africans to understand the principles of long term economics. All we understand and appreciate is a thing which puts food instantly on our tables.

You seem intelligent, but your utterances sounds like one who is ignorant or fails to acknowledge the truth. I ask you to name one meaningful achievement of the Obasanjo regime and here you are talking out of point. What am I suppose to use as a yardstick to measure achievement? I care about that which takes care of my needs,as every other African.

What kind of proper planning! Does planning last for ever? He planned for 8 years, abi? That is the height of cluelessness. He knew he had a limited tenure, yet he planned so much that he fell far short on execution, during that period. This is truly the hallmark of failure. shocked

The man had a sinister, hidden agenda and wanted a third term to execute it! Thank God, Nigerians kicked against it. angry

GEJ may not have done much better, but he definitely was NOT worse than OBJ, and he is not the devil that OBJ keeps trying to make him out to be.

I have seen the big picture...OBJ is the one offering the Nigerian populace, a chalice of advice laced with poison! shocked

For those of you wondering what OBJ did in 8 years, you are not to be blamed. Most Nigerian Africans only see the present and are incapable of looking into the future or seeing the bigger picture. To most Africans, a good president is the one that builds/renovates roads for immediate consumption.

Obj saved several billions of dollars in his 8 years of leadership so that his successor will have funds to bring about massive infrastructural development. Go and check the amount he met in Nigerian coffers in 1999 when he assumed office and also check the amount he left behind when he left. Good leadership requires forward thinking, vision and proper planning. It is not about indiscriminately awarding contracts or what you achieve now, but rather, it is about what your efforts achieve much later for your constituents.

After many years of military rule, OBJ successfully lifted Nigeria out of a deep economic and political pit and placed Nigeria on the world economic map. OBJ cleared Nigeria's external debts and boosted our foreign reserves like never before. The reason behind that was to strengthen Nigeria's credit worthiness and restore Nigeria's political relevance in the international scheme of things. OBJ's 'wasted' 8 years was wasted in building a mega-momentum for the nation to launch us into massive infrastructural development. Unfortunately for OBJ and for Nigeria, OBJ never knew his successors were going to be visionless, irresponsible wasters.

The train tracks you talk about, it was under OBJ's regime that the masterplan of the modernised Nigerian railway system was prepared. OBJ successfully constructed the Ajaokuta - Warri standard gauge line (which is of great economic importance to the steel cities) and he was about commencing the Abuja to Kaduna standard gauge rail when he handed over to Yaradua. However GEJ came in and renovated the 1903 narrow gauge tracks from Lagos to Kano instead of following the masterplan which was meant to replace the old tracks with modern standard gauges. Now we can only have snail speed trains and people are celebrating GEJ and insulting OBJ. A little investigation would even reveal that the money squandered in resuscitating the 1903 lines would have at least built half of the modern lines thereby giving us standard world class high speed trains.
Sometimes it beats me when someone just decides to open his mouth and vomit thrash because he can talk or in this case type loads upon loads of arrant nonsense because of free MB...now u guys can see why sippin garri wihd orijin is not good...you for even say na obasanjo gurantee naija oneness seff,,shiooorr!!!
