The thing is I am still a student .....from the department of history/international studies
When I 1st gained my admission I was discouraged by senior students...cos they were always saying the course isn't easy and there has been no 1st class in the department and all that
so I kinda relented and felt that's there was nothing I could do about the whole thing.....
Buh after my 1st year I discovered that my gp was way too low......tho I blame myself for that
What I want to know is that am I still redemmable Cos am really confused
I need your advices on what to and what not to do
Guidelines on the kind of company I should keep cos am in my 2nd year now
I still believe I can graduate with something good

My dear, a high cgpa is ultra important these days. The job market suffereth violence. I will advice you to calculate well: if you can still graduate with at least a 2.1, then continue and give it your best shot.

However, if from your calculations it seems unrealistic, then register for jamb again while still there, write the aptitude test into same school and same dept or a different school/dept (choice is urs) and switch. Give yourself a fresh start and work harder and you shall be glad you did.

I am aware that this is an unconventional advice and does not usually enjoy a warm reception. But I am convinced it is the wisest course of action if you realise that the most you can graduate with due to a bad start from bad orientation or whatever is a 2.2 and you are just in your second year.

Do not look at the extra one year - some spend extra two years or more trying to tidy up their degree and yet leave with a 2.2 or 3rd class.

The job market suffereth violence... to take it by force calls for 'violent' self-analysis, 'violent' situation-appraisals, 'hardcore' reality evaluations and 'violent' decisions...

If the application asks for a CV best you send it as a separate file and copy the contents into the body of the e-mail.

if the application does not ask for a cover letter, still type it, and copy its contents in the body of the e-mail.

whatever you do, do not send an empty e-mail.

Guessing you are unilorite, of course your cgpa is redeemable, you only have to work harder with sincere effort believing in your self. This year my department which had no first class since inception of the school, produced 4 first class. Its very easy to mix with the crowd, you have to identify friends who are serious with their studies and interact with them, but don't depend on anyone. Only you can help yourself

This is the misconception that makes Nigerian universities produce 2.1 that can't defend their results.

We need to seriously remove this focus on class and grades. We need to focus more on skills and abilities.

Sorry, 2.1 don't put food on your table, skills do.

I can cofidently tell you that no one will employ you because you had a 2.1 or first class. Quote me anywhere.

I am not a student, I left the scene over 8 years ago, and it was lies like these that made friends and colleagues to do above and beyond to secure good grades. Today my skills pay me more than grades, and I am not self employed either.

What I tell every student is this... No matter the grade you come out with, focus 110% on skills, develop your soft skills, develop your IT skills, develop your networking skills, information is power not grades.

I currently have two recruiters on my trail on LinkedIn, one from UAE the other from South Africa, neither is asking me for skills, I have even had a phone interview with one of them, and the focus was on my abilities not my skills.

A fresh graduate with skills will get a job faster than the one with just his result be it a 2.1 or 2.2

My advice to those who have gotten poor results at 200 level or 300 level is simple, don't ever make the mistake of going back to write JAMB, that's the worst mistake you'll ever make. Dig deep, search yourself, find out what you love and develop your skills in that niche, better still if your course is technical in nature, use your holidays to learn the practical side of it, become good at it, then watch how things will change.

I believe by now I have enough experience to know that it's never about what you come out with, it's always about what you can do.

Ignore this at your own risk, self development is always the answer.

I have friends who came out with 2.1 but they don't earn half my salary, and these are guys earning above 100k already.

It's never by your certificate, study the industry you belong or aspire to enter, know what works and start working towards that goal.

Thanks for your contribution. When u say skills, what skills are you referring to and what skills do u think a 100level accounting student like me need to acquire with good cgpa I'm trying to finish with?
I think you can remember where the above two sentences were fixed out from sir, they speak against each other. Pls help me expatiate.
