The <!DOCTYPE> declaration
As stated in an earlier post HTML comes in diferent versions, so you have to specify the version you're writing in if not your page shall be rendered in quirk mode( the browser will interpret it anyhow).
The following are the <!DOCTYPE> declarations for the commonly used versions:

NOTE: Be careful when using HTML 5 as it is not supported in old browsers.

The < ! DOCTYPE> declaration is thus the first item to be inserted in the document.

Yes you are right. But in my opinion i think its better to start with HTML 5.

I am a programmer as well and i started with xhtml, then CSS, then javascript, before i now did HTML 5 and then i realised that i would have just started with HTML 5 and CSS3 . Reason being that HTML 5 is easier to use and helps u create awesome websites. Also HTML 5 is more like the new or recent stuff. xhtml is more like old school and besides most popular browsers support HTML 5 and i doubt if any one is still browsing the internet today with an old browser.

Omerian Consult, we have to remember that there are people that are just learning HTML for the first time. However, we'll be through with HTML soon (4 more parts). After this, links to a book (by me) that treats HTML exclusively (which is definitely more advanced but explicit), will be posted on this thread. This will be the process for CSS, JavaScript, PHP, SQL, e.t.c.

You are correct.

some additional info; classes are used when there is intention to reuse it in the same code

whereas ids are mainly specific to a particle element.

for example, if you want to style all your divs with a particular font-family(use class( but want to style a particular paragraph with a different font(use id)

finally, id may be required in Js for specificity when using the getElementById Method
