True to an extent. I think it motivates youth to see people like them from the same kindred, localty or so to become stars. Just like saying the Yoruba Muslims mostly dominate in table tennis for some reason or the sizable northern contigent in basketball.

The dominance of the falcons to mostly SS/SE could also be attributed to the successful female teams of Pelican stars etc which are SS/SE championship teams. Though this does not explain to an extent the dominance in the male team. Though dominance or not, some of the successful teams would not be as successful if there were missing ingredients like key defenders, midfielders or strikers.

Champs you mean, the Igbos are goal-oriented (however you perceive that), but I am knowledgeable enough to say every other person or tribe in Nigeria is equally gifted. Today lets shun sentiments and public outcry on who is being marginalized or not and think about our achievements as a Nation, you and I.

Perhaps you can also see the other dimensions in which we can explore to ensure we even live better off as citizens of a great nation. They wont let us be, they have exploited our weak links being tribal differences, religious differences etc for the sole purpose of making their economies richer while we spend time, and our fortunes to spite ourselves.

If you realize the gains of certain members of the international community in that a country as blessed as us has got bullet holes borne of hatred riddled against it, rivalry and greed amongst its great people and yet they succeed to lace certain individuals pockets to deepen our social divide.

I mean can we all sit and have a rethink?

Sorry to dissapoint you, the writer of the article is Yoruba.

Can a Yoruba differentiate between a S-Easterner and a S-southerner? Apart from that, what she said is absolutely true...

I could care less if a Yoruba person can differentiate between SE and SS. Also, I'll admit that historically Igbos have had greats like Okocha and Kanu, but now the tide is changing and you all can no longer claim you're the best.

Madam, FOOTBALL? Not so fast. Lets look at the facts.
Before Okwaraji or even Christian Chukwu there was Thunder Balogun

A. Based on number of goals - who are the top Nigerian strikers?
1. Rashidi Yekini
2. Yakubu Aiyegbeni
3. Obafemi Martins
4. Ikechukwu Uche
grin So Igbo guy comes at No.4 - so tell me why shouldn't the tribes of No.1, 2, and 3 BEAT their chest? grin

By the way where is Emenike? Was he not suppose to surpass Yekini's record? He has not even reached Martins record not to talk of Yakubu's. grin Don't get me wrong. Emenike is a good player and Igbos can brag about him all the want. However, he seems not to have the prolific staying power of either Yekini, Yakubu and Martins. Yekini's goals (single handedly) took Nigeria to her FIRST World Cup - maybe his tribe should start beating their chest too grin

B. Based on stats and achievements best goalkeepers:
1. Vincent Enyeama.
2. Ike Shorunmu.
3. Peter Rufai.
grin Again, no Igbo guy here - why are the tribes of these people not beating their chest and claiming to control Nigerian football? grin
What about the worst goalkeeper of the last 2 decades - Mr. Chigozie Agbim? grin Who wants to brag about Agbim?

C. First Nigerian goal at the world cup scored by Rashidi Yekini

D. Best winger of the last 40 years is Finidi George.

E. Best aerial ball player EVER in Nigerian history - Mutiu Adepoju.

None of these 3 guys are Igbos.

F. Nigeria's last world cup Goal scorers.
1. Ahmed Musa
2. Osaze

G. Recording breaking U17 goal scorer (2015): Victor Osimihen is NOT Igbo. He is a Bini boy.

None of these guys are Igbos.

H. Now to be fair lets look at a possible state where Igbos can beat their chest.
1. Mikel Obi is the most successful Nigerian player in European football by far. He is Igbo so Igbos can beat their chest here grin
2. He is closely followed by Nwankwo Kanu (Papillo - one of my favorite players grin).
3.Okocha (Anioma man but he has never denied being Igbo) is one player the Igbos may brag about any day any time until he denies being Igbo . grin
4. Key players at the last won nations cup
1. Emenike -Igbo
2. Sunday Mba - Igbo
3. Victor Moses - Bini
4. Enyeama - Ibibio
5. Onazi - Igalla (Benue for sure)
So 1 and 2 are Igbos so Igbo can brag here. grin

H. Sunday Oliseh is arguably one of the best midfielders of all time - but we just learnt he is NOT Igbo so the Igbos can't brag about him. grin

Now here is my point: The success of Nigerian football cannot be attributed to one tribe. Players from so many tribes have contributed to bring glory to the country. Tribal chest beaters are not needed in our football, they are toxic and are totally unhelpful. And I will continue to lamblast them wherever they poke their ugly heads grin

I do not agree with the above statement. She has no scientific proof to back up that statement.
Physically prowess, genetically studier? What is it, WWE wrestling? It's football.Have you seen Lionel Messi or Peter Crouch? How prowess and sturdier are both players?
In every discipline in life, some are better than others. It's natural. Look at the Brazilians and the Germans, they are like football factory line.
All tribes in Nigeria has football talents but Igbo has a slight advantage, helped by their never die attitude to succeed. Because football is like the acting world. You needed a very thick skin and long term endurance to make it because there are so many disappointments along the way.

Haha what slight advantage? Besides Kanu and Okocha what top talents have you produced? Emenike is just a basic striker and Mikel is an overrated hypejob sitting on the bench at Chelsea.

Talking about boxing and being huge fan, maybe I should open a thread so I can praise and let people appreciate the warrior exploit of my Yoruba friends in the boxing ring.

The next big thing Anthony Femi Joshua is Yoruba.

Lateef Kayode who until last week was undefeated in the heavy weight category is Yoruba. He got his a**e whooped though in Russia by Lebedev, the guy who nearly killed one of my all time favourite boxers.Roy Jones Junior.

Then you have Olarewaju Durodola aka Gods power. I watched his fight against South African Mchunu who was much shorter and lost....but he went to Russia against all odds...Knocked out previously unbeaten cruiser weight champion Dmitry Kudryashov in round two and one of my favourites of boxers Ola Afolabi also knocked out Rakhim Chakhkiev in round five.

Ola Afolabi by the way never had an amateur career unlike Lateef and Durodola who represented Nigeria in the past.

Not forgetting Segun Ajose who is doing well, I think he won gold in one all African games before moving to the UK.

Henry Akinwande...

There's another Naija/polish guy kicking azzes at the moment. He had an ufc/MMA career before going into boxing...his name...Izuagbe Ugonoh...I think his parents might be from Niger delta.
Gueillermo Jones re-arranged the face of lebedev, its was truly a horror sight. U truly a boxing enthusiast. Had no idea Anthony Joshua is yourba though I feel he's just a hype job

Yeah Yorubas have done decent in boxing but Lateef has been a dissapointment. Also Ajose got blasted by my Argentina guy Matthysse some years back then later, Ajose got beaten up by Hank Lundy. The two British Nigerian phenoms are Anthony Joshua and Anthony Ogogo, both of whom have a ton of potential. Also Hollywood Hino could have crossed over into a superstar, but he never had the skills to match his charismatic personality. And I think Izuagbe is from Edo North.

Yea I watched the Ajose/Mattysee fight and I was disappointed. Ajose fought well though but the Argie was tough and better.

Lateef seem to struggle against some opponents. The hulk beat and knocked him out but decision was overturned when the Cuban tested positive to banned substance. Lateef also lost one of fight which later went his way. Durodola is tough but also seem to struggle against shorter fighters. The Mchunu fight kind of exposed his weakness. He measures well against fighters of similar height. He was very awkward with his jabs and his punches frequently swung over mchunu's head and shoulders.

What do you think about Joshua vs Dillian fight? Dillian was the guy who beat him in their amateur days. He like Joshua hasn't lost a fight but I think Joshua would put him down in the first five rounds. He look fat and clumsy.

I think Anthony should blow through Dillan Whyte. Joshua is the future of the heavyweight division and it'll take someone extraordinary to beat him and I don't see Whyte troubling him. Even right now, I think Anthony can trouble the black American Deontay Wilder because Wilder just seems untested to me. It looks like Wilder's chin is suspect and Joshua has the physical strength and athleticism to give Wilder hell, even at this early stage of Joshua's career.

These is one of the few Yoruba who isn't blinded by sentiment..

Yorubas were never blinded by sentiments ab initio towards the igbos untill politics and political comments drove a wedge between us. Most of us have a very strong bond with the igbo tribe. Majority of my childhood friends were igbos. We interchanged holidays at each others residences. Our parents took us as one. At the University all my closest friends and room mates were igbos. We lived like brothers. All my life, 98% of my female friends were of the igbo extraction. Majority of my staff here in abuja were all igbos and I loved them all. Never allowed them to lack a thing in their attempt to settle down in the FCT.
My darling wife is from ihiala in imo state. We have 3-brilliant kids. I have 2-of their igbo uncles living with me. They are wonderful folks. I put them first in everything because they always put my family interest first even above theirs.
As you can see, nairaland tribal hatred comments is threatening to hamper all of these cherished bonds.
GEJ did quite a whole lot of damage particularly during the Anambra governorship campaign/elections. Well, all that is in the past now.
