Can you contribute or give what you don't have?

Average of average of the average nigerian's
Salary is 60k/Mn = 720k PA

Family of 5-2 students average feeding =20k/Mn= 240k

Average house rent per year = 180k

Own a car? Yes

Average service per month 6k =72k PA

Children in Federal polytechnic average of 60k + 10k every month =60+120 ≠180k

Private secondary school average of 60k

Utility :

Water = he no dey

Light = average of 7k per month = 144k

Upkeep : clothes, tyre, emergencies, textbooks, subscriptions, transport and fuel, etc average of 300k PA

300k+ 144k+60k+180k+240k+72k+180k

Total = 1.17m deduct 720k

=

-456,000

Oga, that is why you are charged N50 for deposit and not N4000.. You start from somewhere

Nigerians living abroad should be taxed too. After all, United States citizens residing and working abroad pay taxes to the US govt

In my opinion, it should be more of a developmental levy for being a Nigerian citizen.. Like the poster you quoted said, Nigeria needs all hands on deck for the quick development of the country! We are fast loosing pace with the western world!
Yes you're right in that regard. All hands should be on deck to revive our economy. However, it's discouraging to know that the developmental levies have historically ended up in only some leaders' bank accounts and the common man that needs it most is still being ripped off in his dire state.

You made salient points as well! I guess my sentiment in supporting the OP is centered around the fact that I trust this government to handle incomes way better than the previous governments we'v had!

Sincerely though, if we want an economy like that of America, we'll have to support the government in our own little ways till we operate economies like theirs! The rules are simple! Ecomonies are built!

I'm positive about this administration too.
Yeah, I agree. People will have to contribute their own quota to national development through payment of taxes.
It should be a joint effort. Government cannot do it alone.

Nigerians lack the basic understanding of collective efforts. We see Government as aliens with mystic powers to provide everything we need without any personal contribution. People use garbage to fill up drainage and expect Government to come clear it for them or accuse Government of causing the resultant flooding.

No one is asking you to pay 23k for electricity right now.. But if you want the economy to develop to the level where an average nigerian can afford to pay 23k comfortably, then you have to take the 50 naira taxes seriously now! Its simple!!

I'v wanted to write this article for over 2 months but its discouraging thinking about the number of points i need to raise to support my claims! NIGERIANS WANT THE BEST THINGS BUT NEVER WANT TO PAY FOR IT!! HOW ON EARTH DO YOU WANT YOUR COUNTRY TO DEVELOP?!

Quick question; Imagine government fixes Nigeria's issues of electricity and internet with other basic amenities today, Who here would be willing to pay an annual rent of N1million for a single room (Not one bedroom flat oo) in a city like Ado-Ekiti and N3million for the most average single room (shared toilet and bathroom with at least one other person e.g face me, I face you houses) in a city like Lagos?! Note: This is just basic rent and is therefore without utility bills such as Electricity, Heating, Water, Garbage, Internet etc that averages about another N900,000 yearly.

I couldn't stop shaking my head at the gullibility of some Nigerians as i read the various comments on the N50 bank charges thread. That is what? 2cents charge on banking transactions that does not even include savings account that most of the commenters use oo! Even South Africa reportedly demands that you pay an equivalent of N500 for deposits into your own account (Savings or Current)! Where I live, you are demanded to pay an equivalent N4,200 in charges for deposit into another's account if you aren't a customer of the bank!

Nigeria has the lowest VAT tax in the world and i'm sure y'all will take to the streets in protests if this is ever increased! I pay N1,500 in charges for every ATM interbank withdrawal of an equivalent of N10,000 and you all couldn't stop screaming at the N65 naira (after 3rd transaction) that was introduced by the CBN last year! Haba Nigerians!! You want to live 'comfortably' like Americans and Europeans but aren't ready to pay the price! Who does that sh*t! One of the major reasons why you don't enjoy goodies is because because you haven't had to pay enough taxes. It is partly a reason why the government doesn't feel very responsible to the people as well. Oil is not anyone's property anyways.

I really can't remember the last time i visited an hospital but i'm mandated to pay an equivalent of N23,000 monthly for health insurance! Would you be willing to pay such amount for the sake of development in the health care sector in Nigeria?! I don't think so but you would be the first to take pictures for nairaland about the pitiable state of one hospital in your city!

You want the best Infrastructures in the world but have never paid taxes from your businesses! Some people would rather close up shop than pay the most basic tax to the government! How on earth do you expect any development if you aren't ready to help government with funds? Nigeria is not the only country with oil, we don't even have as much as Russia but expect to get everything for free because there's oil in the land! What would y'all have done if you didn't have anything but rocks and granite? you would expect the government officials to use their personal incomes to develop the country first and then see if you like it or not before you decide to pay?! I no pity your destiny!

Nowhere in the world is mobile internet data cheap, Nigerians automatically feel they are being ripped off by mobile operators who use the same infrastructure that's being deployed everywhere else! For a 2gb mobile internet data allowance from T-mobile, I pay N5,000 monthly, This is not even close to what Nigerians get from the mobile operators but they scream to the heavens still. Agreed, cable/ADSL, wired internet is cheaper but you cant blame this on the telecom industries, Government should make provisions for that! But again, how many persons would not scream 'Rip off' if you all are asked to pay a mandatory internet fee ranging in thousands of Naira every month

From food to clothings, transportation, even prostitutes (Girls in brothels here charge at least 12k for a quickie, Don't ask me how i know grin), Nigerians live on the cheap and want to keep up with the expensive! No! It doesn't work that way! You have to pay for developments that leads to a robust economy which in turn leads to higher standard of living (Job creation, Increment in Minimum wage, Good roads, healthcare facilities etc)..

your post is flawed, total error,

where you live, you are seeing what you pay for.

in Nigeria, the ones we pay are being looted and stolen.

We pay for light we don't use, sometimes Over estimated bills.

let the government judiciously use the ones we have paying now, we will be glad to pay more. Not paying taxes and it ends in a politicians pocket.

@op u r right. Nigerians want the best but are not ready to pay for it.
You get what you pay for. How do u think developed countries( especially those with out oil, etc) survive and can make life comfortable for their citizens?
Stop being stingy:
Pay your taxes
Pay electricity bills
Pay fines
Pay the government what is theirs
I believe under this dispensation Nigerians will feel safer giving their money to government.

I really do understand where the OP is coming from. It feels like a lot of people think government has unlimited resources. People need to start thinking of contributing their quota. I saw a post that said until $1 equals N150, does this mean someone is actually waiting around, folding his arms for the government to wave a magic wand for that to happen? How do people not understand that we all have to contribute towards this happening. This is time for Nigerians to get creative not wait for government. Oil prices have caused devaluation of naira, nothing the government can do about that.

Going back to op, while you made good points theta also some naivety in your comments. The problem is two fold, first is Nigerians don't want to pay, second is the government steals all they can. Second reason has made citizens distrust the government that they don't think that money they're paying will be put to good use. If the government can manage effectively what they have and build trust, I think it'll be easier to convince people to pay more. If you slap extra charges on something and I don't see any improvement, meanwhile it seems you're getting richer then I feel cheated and then don't want to pay anymore. End of the day, Nigerians have to have a mindset of contributing more towards the National purse, then most important government needs to build trust.

This is a clear case of 'robbery'.

If a government's minimum wage is low compared to what obtains in other countries, if a country is unable to reduce unemployment rate, if a country is unable make things relatively easy for her citizens then the sacrifices towards correcting these ills must begin with the government.

Slash budgetary allocations to non-profit yielding things such as extravagant cars, feeding, govt house sports, animals etc.

Slash salary of public officials to a larger extent.

Reduce size of government - Senate & Reps na pure redundancy, cancel one and allocate the salaries and allowances to other things.

Having set above examples and more then you can tax us to death, we will comply.

The OP and his co-travellers, out of wanting to form 'exposed' or maybe out of being APC idi0ts have refused to face the realities with the Nigerian state.

This is the FG's way of making the masses bear the weight of the 5,000 naira stipend since we won't let it go.

So you want the government to use their personal incomes to develop the country first after which you will decide to contribute your quota to the economy if you like the results or not?!! i guess you should also ask them to help you put breakfast, lunch and dinner on your table!! The development in the west is as a result of the taxes generated from its citizens, not the other way round!

This has always been my point of view as well. How do you expect anyone in power to feel any sense of responsibility to the citizens when the citizens are not responsible themselves! Everyone, everywhere pays taxes, Nigerians see even the cheap taxes that are required of them as rip offs.. Una neva ready for development o!

The problem is not the payung of taxes. The problem is the mechanism thay ensures that each indivdual pays his or her specificed tax as at when due.. that mechanism is missing and this is the reason i would clamour for a central database of the population with social security inclusive!

If yes then stop all wat u ar doing now and send this msg to 12 people and see what Jesus will do tomorrow for u.Jesus loves u. And believe me after 7 days ur wish will come 2 u. But if u ignore it, u will b on ur own 4 7yrs. Pls do it with faith bcoz it works. NEVER WANT TO PAY FOR IT!!

But again, how many persons would not scream 'Rip off' ifou all are asked to pay a mandatory internet fee ranging in thousands of Naira every month

Why did you convert the money to Naira, Convert also what u are paid to Naira. Why did you go to Live in that land? where u have a heaven here.

@Op u are really very funny but let me ask you just one question, if Nigeria is to be your so called "paradise" why not relocate down here and enjoy it with us?

Until our government wakes up to his responsibilities, all what u have stated up there is not really a BIG deal.

The government has not accounted for the gazillions of dollars looted by successive governments since independence.

Our oil has been used to enrich the elite while the masses remain impoverished. They had an opportunity to make a difference over the years but they failed to. In those civilized countries you speak of, government officials are accountable to the people. Even the misappropriation of one hundred dollars is enough for a government official to lose his job and face charges.

The average Nigerian household is a local government on its own. The average Nigerian provides light for himself (generator), provides his own water (boreholes), etc. We provide for ourselves amenities that the government ought to provide for us. I'd rather pay a toll on a good road than pay Kazeem to fix my car which has been battered by the death traps we call roads.

Nothing good comes for free, but the problem is that once the government starts obtaining more money from the citizenry, there is overwhelming evidence to show that the money will be embezzled as usual.

They should first of all bring development (not with their personal money as you sarcastically stated) with budgeted funds, before having the moral right to ask for more.
