Omeruo says he wants to play at Rio Olympics

Kenneth Omeruo

Thursday Apr 14, 2016. 17:29
Nigeria international Kenneth Omeruo has declared his interest to feature for the country at the Rio 2016 Olympics in Brazil in August.

The Chelsea loanee, who has been in superlative form for Kasimpasa in the Turkish Super League, is 22 and eligible to play for coach Samson Siasia-led Dream Team VI.

He also said he wants to end the season on a high with a continental ticket.

"I just want to finish the season as well as possible and try and help Kasimpasa into a European spot. After that we will start thinking about next season. There is also the Olympics which I might be involved in," he told Chelsea official website.

He also rated Turkish league highly after he has featured in the Dutch league and the English Championship.

"I have already played in Holland [for ADO Den Haag] and in the Championship [for Middlesbrough] and it’s a combination of both. It’s relaxed because there is a game a week, especially if you’re not in the cup, so you have a lot of time to train and prepare for the next game which isn’t always the case in England,” he said.

"And the games are always tough. Teams that are struggling are always fighting hard. Every game is difficult but each one comes with improvement."

Chelsea Loanee Turns down chance to play at Olympics - Reports
Biyi Akangbe

Kasımpaşa defender Kenneth Omeruo rejected the opportunity to represent the Nigeria U23s at the 2016 Olympic Games when he was contacted by coach Samson Siasia.

It was earlier reported that the Chelsea loanee’s name was missing from the list of 60 players sent to the Nigeria Football Federation.

“Siasia contacted Omeruo and asked him if he wants to play at the Olympic Games. His answer was negative, so that’s the reason he was dropped ”an official source told allnigeriasoccer.com.
Omeruo has proved a bright spark since he featuredfor the Nigeria setup at the Fifa Under 17 World Cupand his performance was highlighted when he helped the senior team win the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The central defender, 22,would have easily made the Dream Team VI roster for the competition in Brazil as he is still within the age limit.

Badosqi:
which system? Are you sure we have a working system for our super eagles? How can we boast of a working system when we do not even have a senior team coach (3 separate coaching team in a space of 6 months).
We played 2 matches against egypt and we had no striker(aron samuel, adi) on the bench in those games because of this almighty system and the hardest rigorous training in the world.

My own is what is actually the imporance of this rigorous training? Will it help us in getting the best out of our players?

What form of training and system do we even operate on because I don't just understand how a player like Adi who finished on number 7 on the topscorer chart in MLS for last season with 16 goals(1st time a portland will ever reach 16 goals in MLS) and already joint topping the league top scorer chart this season will 6 goals in 7 games will find it so hard to make the eagles bench. I don't see why we should celebrate this system.
There is something about Coach Samson Siasia that we do not understand and we may never understand. As a Nigerian and Super Eagles ardent fan, I have tried severally to be positive but, I beginning to be tired of his selection criteria. Our home Coaches just have to try and prove that they have what it takes to prove us wrong that we always need foreign Coaches to get out selection right.

NFF Withdraw From Pre-Olympic Tournament Due To Cash Crunch

By Richard Jideaka, Abuja:

The hope of Samson Siasia using this year's Toulon football tournament to prepare the country's Under-23 team for the Rio Olympic Games in Braziln has been dashed as the Nigeria Football Federation have withdrawn from the yearly tournament in France.

Official sources told Completesportnigeria.com that the organizers of the tournament that attracts age-grade teams from top playing football nations have been notified that Nigeria will not be participating in the competition scheduled for May 19 to May 28.

Siasia had hoped to use the tournament to screen and test the 60 players he listed for camping and preparation but with the withdrawal, he has to look elsewhere to prepare for the Rio Olympics billed for August this year.

"I don't think our national Under-23 team will be participating in the Toulon tournament as earlier planned because of obvious reason of lack of funds," chairman of NFF Technical and Development committee Chris Green told Completesportsnigeria.com. "We wanted the U-23s to play the tournament which will also see some other Olympic Games bound teams in action but circumstances denied us.

"We shall look for quality friendly games for the team and hopefully there will be funds then to prepare the team. The target is an Olympic gold medal and the NFF will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the boys deliver in Rio." Green stated

Friday continues fine form in Norway
by Sammy Wejinya

Fred Friday

Nigerian striker, Fred Friday, continues to lead by example in Norway’s Eliteserien as he scored yet again for Lillestrøm on match day seven.

Friday scored once as provided an assist as Kanarifuglene (The Canaries) overpowered Odd Grenland Ballklub 3-1 at Skagerak Arena.

The 20-year-old striker squared for the onrushing Mohammed Ofkir to emphatically finish past the Odd goal keeper, Sondre Rossbach in the 35th minute.

He turned from provider to scorer in the first minute of time added on with the hosts pouring forward in numbers in search of the equalizer.

The former Nigeria under-23 international showed impressive upper body strength to shrug off his marker, the Odd captain, Steffen Hagen, to before firing past Rossbach to secure maximum points for his side.

The win lifts Lillestrøm up to sixth on the standings with 10 points from seven matches.

On a personal level, it marked yet another milestone for Friday, who remains the league’s top scorer with six goals in seven matches.

Ibrahimovic Snubs Sweden’s Olympic Team, Won’t Face Nigeria

By Johnny Edward:

Sweden superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic has rejected overtures made by the Olympic team coach Hakan Ericson to include him in the squad for the 2016 Rio Olympics, Completsportsnigeria.com reports.

Sweden are in the same group as Nigeria. Japan and Colombia are the other teams in the group.

According to Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, the 34-year-old forward who will lead Sweden to the European Championship in France in June is not fascinated about the prospect of featuring at the Games.

"I have other things that interest me," Ibrahimovic replied Swedish daily Aftonbladet when asked about his availability for the Olympic Games.

Ibrahimovic, whose contract expires at the French capital club in the summer, recently secured his 29th career trophy with Paris St. Germain winning the French Coupe de La Ligue on Saturday.

He scored 11 goals in 10 Euro 2016 qualifying games for the Swedes.

Eriksson's side will begin their campaign against Colombia on the 4th of August in Manaus before battling Nigeria on August 7 in the same city. Their final match will be against Japan in Salvador on August 10th.

Sweden have won two Olympic football bronze medals : at the 1924 and 1952 games, and gold at the 1948 Games.

Rio 2016: Zlatan, Rodriguez, Other Big Stars Nigeria Could Face

The football tournament of the 2016 Rio Olympics will begin on August 4 with Nigeria set to face Japan, Sweden and Colombia in Group B.

Teams have the chance to pick three over-aged players for the tournament and of course players born as from January 1, 1993.
Surely form, fitness, clubs’ willingness to let their players go as it is outside of the FIFA calendar, and players’ commitment will all be factors for team selection.

Completesportsnigeria.com’s IZUCHUKWU OKOSI takes a look at the players Nigeria are likely to battle against at the Olympics in Brazil…

JAPAN
Japan are one of Nigeria’s Group B opponents at the football tournaments of the 2016 Rio Olympics. In fact Samson Siasia and his team will face Japan in their first game in Rio on August 4 at the Amazonia Arena in Manaus.

Three over-aged players are expected to make the side stronger and predictably are players that have been instrumental in their clubs’ progress in Europe.

SHINJI OKAZAKI (Leicester, England)

The Leicester City forward could be one of the over-aged players to play for Japan at this year’s Olympics.

Okazaki represented Japan at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, as one of the U-23 players.

Now he could make his second appearance at the Games and face the Nigerian defence on August 4 owing to his phenomenal form for the Foxes this season which sees them at the cusp of a Premier League title.

Okazaki will bring leadership and fear factor into the Japanese team. His average shot per game is 1.3% and his industry and commitment could take Japan far at the Olympics.

SHINJI KAGAWA (Dortmund, Germany)

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa is predictably one of the players that will be under the radar for a place in the Japanese squad to the Olympics.

The former Manchester United star’s creativity will be key for the Blues if selected for the Olympics.

Kagawa has proven to be the third most creative player for Dortmund so far this season with six assists in 22 games, with seven goals to boot.

Samson Siasia’s midfielders could come up against Kagawa who will be a very tough customer if he is selected as expected.

MAYA YOSHIDA (Southampton, England)

Players’ statistics don’t tell the whole story about what to expect at football tournaments but Maya Yoshida has made an average tackle of 0.7% per game, 1.6% interceptions and 3.4% clearances. His average blocks per game is 0.5 so far.

Should Yoshida be picked for Japan’s squad for the Olympics, he could come face-to-face against Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and possibly the duo of Odion Ighalo and Mikel Obi whom he has at one time or the other confronted in the English Premier League.

SWEDEN

Sweden qualified for the Rio Olympics after winning the 2015 UEFA European U-21 Championship in Czech Republic.

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC (PSG, France)

Paris Saint Germain’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic is under the consideration of the Sweden FA for a place in the country’s team to the football tournament of the Rio Olympics.

Coach Hakan Ericson will hope Ibrahimovic’s uncertainty over his future as per club football will work in his favour and let the striker travel with the team to Brazil.

“I hope to use over-age players and I hope that Zlatan will be available, but it depends on the European Championships. If he is available, I want him to play for us,” Ericson is quoted as saying by FIFA.com.

Samson Siasia may not like the sound of that but it will be tantalising prospect for fans all over the world.

Ibrahimovic has represented Sweden at the U-18 and U-21 levels but the Olympics is missing from the dreaded striker’s rich CV.

The contributions the superstar can make in the Swedish team are enormous. He has scored 32 of PSG’s 88 goals so far this season, making a 36% contribution in the goals netted by the Paris billionaires.

JOHN GUIDETTI (Celta Vigo, Spain)
Sweden qualified for the Olympics and striker John Guidetti was instrumental in his country’s run at the U-21 Championship.

Now 24 years-old, the Celta Vigo striker who has represented Sweden in the U-17 and U-19 levels scored two goals in Czech Republic plus a penalty in the 4-3 shootout win against Portugal in the final.

The former Manchester City and Stoke City starlet is almost certain of getting the nod to be in the team as he has played with a number of the players still within the age range.

Guidetti is the third top scorer for Celta Vigo this season with seven goals and his attacking instincts could be key to how Sweden progress in Rio.

MARTIN OLSSON (Norwich, England)

Martin Olsson could be called up by Sweden due to his ability in a number of positions on the field.

The 27-year-old can play as a left back, a left-sided winger and as a forward. He has scored one goal for his club and had two assists.

Olsson’s pass success percentage of 63.5 shows how efficient he can be in making things happen for his team, club or country.

Sweden have other over-aged players they can call upon like Ola Toivonen (Sunderland), Kristoffer Nordfeldt (Swansea), Seb Larsson (Sunderland)

Joel Ekstrand (Watford), Jonas Olsson (West Brom).

COLOMBIA

JAMES RODRIGUEZ (Real Madrid, Spain)

Colombia have always produced great football players especially in the midfield and attacking positions.

Names such as Faustino Asprilla, Carlos Valderama and (yes) Radamel Falcao readily come to mind.

Colombia edged out USA in the play-offs to reach the Rio Olympics and Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez who had a great outing at the 2014 World Cup, incidentally in Brazil could face Nigeria as one of the over-aged players in Rio.

Rodriguez has faced Nigeria at youth level before. He was in the Colombian U-17 team that lost 2-1 to Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets coached by the late Yemi Tella in the Round of 16 of the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup at the Gwang-Yang Stadium, Gwangyang, South Korea on August 30, 2007.

Nigeria won the U-17 World Cup for the third time then.

One of Rodriguez’s Olympics wishes could well be a chance to avenge that defeat to Nigeria nine years ago at the U-17 level.

The Real Madrid star is expected to take part in the Copa America to be staged in USA in June but perhaps the month of July will offer ample rest period for his exertions before flying to Rio to face Nigeria on August 10.

RADAMEL FALCAO (Chelsea, England)

On-loan Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao was one of football’s most dreaded strikers until a cruel injury stopped him from representing Colombia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Ever since that unfortunate setback, the career of the AS Monaco star who had previously played for Porto and Atletico Madrid has suffered.

Not many coaches will really want to take the gambles Man United and Chelsea took so a participation at the 2016 Olympics (his place in the Colombian side for the Copa America in June is doubtful) will be a good avenue for Falcao to relaunch his career.

The striker has reportedly made his intention of playing in Rio known and his chances of being selected are high since he will most possibly not be top choice striker (just yet) for any of the big clubs across Europe.

DAVID OSPINA (Arsenal, England)

David Ospina has continued to divide opinion in England.

The goalkeeper is rated high by some fans who fell in love with his performance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

For some though, the jury is still out for him. At the moment, Czech Republic’s Petr Cech is Arsenal’s first choice goalkeeper and there have been rumours that manager Arsene Wenger could let Ospina leave in the summer so that Wojciech Sczeszny could return from his loan spell at AS Roma.

So a participation at the Rio Olympics and eventually possibly facing the likes of Odion Ighalo (likely to be one of Nigeria’s three over-aged players) who scored against him in Watford’s 2-1 win against the holders Arsenal in the quarter finals stage of the FA Cup in England on March 13 is possible.

Manchester City Loanee Nwakali Named To Nigeria U23s Provisional Roster For

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Manchester City loanee Chidiebere Nwakali could figure for the Dream Team VI at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The central midfielder has been included by Samson Siasia in his 60-man provisional squad for the tournament which begins in August.

Nwakali is not the only player in the Golden Eaglets class of 2013 that made the provisional roster, as it is confirmed that Kelechi Iheanacho(Man City), Taiwo Awoniyi(FSV Frankfurt),Saviour Godwin(KV Oostende) and Aliyu Abubakar(KuPS) have been selected.

The 19-year-old’s impressive display for IK Start in Norway played a crucial role in his inclusion in the provisional roster.

Chidiebere Nwakali featured in every single game played by the Nigeria U17s during the Fifa Under 17 World Cup in the UAE and was part of the Flying Eagles squad at the 2015 Fifa Under 20s in New Zealand.

Nigeria: Sports Analysis - Will Mikel Truly Add Value to Siasia's Team?
22 April 2016

By Jide Alaka

The national U-23 manager, Samson Siasia, has revealed that Mikel Obi is interested in representing Nigeria at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Good thought!

The Chelsea man offers experience and big-game mentality. Mikel has played in the UEFA Champions League final, won the Nations Cup and played in the EPL for 10 years, and will be joining a team which currently consists of international neophytes.

Although I have watched the team win the U-23 CAF championship in Senegal, and I am at a loss as to what qualities apart from those stated above that Mikel will give Siasia's team to create that extra impetus to win gold in Brazil.

For one, I cannot say for starters what Mikel's best position is or would be at the moment.

The captain of the U-23 side is Okechukwu Azubuike, who for me is one of the best midfielders I have seen in Nigeria in a long while. Azubuike appears to play at his best in a deep-lying playmaker role, like Andrea Pirlo.

This is taking cognizance of the fact that Siasia likes to play the 4-3-3 formation with the full backs adding dimension to his team's attack. This means that the deep-lying midfielder must be mobile and quick, two characteristics we will not normally associate with Mikel.

The other midfielder of note is Oghenekaro Etebo, a box-to-box player, who shone against Egypt for the Super Eagles. The former Warri Wolves man was named the MVP of the U-23 CAF championship.

Siasia, who took Mikel to the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, explained that no player would make his team to Brazil on cosmetic grounds.

"I guess that because Mikel missed out the last time, he wants to make up for it," Siasia said this week.

"Not only that, the last couple of games he has played for the Super Eagles, he has been playing very well, and if he wants to be part of the team, of course he is welcome.

"We are not going to select players because they play for the Super Eagles or because they are still under the age bracket. They have to compete with those players who actually qualified the team for the Olympics."

It has also been revealed that players like Odion Ighalo, Ogenyi Onazi, and Kenneth Omeruo, are in the initial list forwarded to the Nigeria Football Federation for consideration.

Like I said at the beginning, it is all well and good but the coach and the footballing house must ensure an alignment of goals. If it is to win - then the more the merrier but if this U-23 team is the next Super Eagles, then both parties may need a rethink.

I really want to know what you think and three over-age players you think should be included.

Nigeria: Eagles Coach Praises Iheanacho

By Tony Ubani with Agency Reports

Kelechi Iheanacho's star performance against Stoke has earned him praise from Super Eagles Coach Salisu Yusuf.

Iheanacho scored a brace and was responsible for winning the penalty that Sergio Aguero converted for City's second.

Yusuf, elated by the teenager's performance said that the boy has come of age and would be an asset for the Super Eagles.

"Iheanacho is doing great which is a good sign for the national team," Salisu said.

"Playing well for top clubs like City despite the young age shows that he has come of age in the game.

"Iheanacho has showed signs of what he can do when given the opportunity with the national team, and I can say here that people are going to see more of him and other young players in the Super Eagles", Salisu noted.

Meanwhile, the Manchester City striker is already dreaming of facing star-studded Real Madrid in the Champions League tomorrow in Etihad.

He is is not expected to be included in Manuel Pellegrini's starting XI for Tuesday's Champions League semi final first leg.

But his two goals against Stoke on Saturday proved what an asset he could be from the bench. The 19-year-old has scored 11 goals since breaking into City's first team this season - prompting Pellegrini to identify him as one of the rising stars who could shine under incoming manager Pep Guardiola. And ahead of Real and the prospect of facing Zinedine Zidane's Galacticos, Iheanacho said: "I think I should dream about that because it's a great team to dream about.

"It would be a dream come true to play against them.

"I think I'll be happy when I play against them."

Iheanacho hopes his performance in the 4-0 win against Stoke will force him into Pellegrini's thinking against Real.

Ommission From Siasia’s Olympics Squad Disappoints Obaroakpo

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Abia Warriors captain Austin Obaroakpo is sad that he will not be part of the Nigerian U-23 national team preparing for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Samson Siasia released a list of 30 home-based players who are expected to resume camping on Monday and Obaroakpo, the captain of the home-based Super Eagles side to the 2016 African Nations Championship in Rwanda, told Completesportsnigeria.com on Sunday how disappointed he was not to be invited.

“I’m not in the U-23 national camp even though I would have loved to because I’m still within the age range. There is no player that would not want to be part of the Olympics,” Oboroakpo told Completesportsnigeria.com.

Obaroakpo was not invited for Nigeria’s AFCON qualifiers against Egypt in March and the defender considers the football tournament of the Rio Olympics as the next target for Nigeria.

“It was disappointing not qualifying for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations so you can imagine how we (players) all want to be part of the Olympics which will be a good consolation should Nigeria win it like the 1996 set did,” Obaroakpo added.

Nigeria will play against Japan, Sweden and Colombia at the football tournament of the Rio Olympics.

Granada hopeful over Nigeria's Success

Granada are hopeful that Nigeria striker Isaac Success will feature again this season despite suffering a serious facial injury during the win over Levante last week.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring in the 5-1 drubbing of Levante on Thursday, but he was stretchered off the field in the 73rd minute after colliding with team-mate Adalberto Penaranda.

It was later confirmed that he fractured several bones in face and he underwent surgery on Saturday.

Success, who has scored six goals for Granada, will be out for a couple of weeks, but is expected to return before the end of the season and will have to play with a protective mask.

Nigeria Foes Colombia List Falcao, Ospina For Olympics; Plan Argentina Friendly

By Johnny Edward:

Chelsea striker Radamel Falcao has been included in the provisional squad sent by the Colombian Olympic Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Colombia are drawn in Group B alongside Nigeria, Sweden and Japan.

According to Caracol Radio, Falcao was listed alongside Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina, former Wigan striker Hugo Rodallega and Chinese Super League-based attacking midfielder Giovanni Moreno for the Games barring any last minute hitch.

The Colombia-based radio station also revealed that national U-23 coach, Carlos ‘Pisces’ Restrepo, is lining up two friendlies ahead of the Olympics.

“We thought about having some micro-sessions with the national players; a first training cycle in Colombia for six days, another in late May, then in June and in July,” the coach said.

“And also we want to play two international games. We are in talks to face Argentina in Miami. We are not ruling out that one game could be in Colombia.

“Hopefully we can meet the expectations we have. This team is very difficult to put together because the regulations don’t help in regards to releasing players. We want to put all our effort into it.”

Colombia are drawn in Group B alongside Sweden, Nigeria and Japan.

Olarenwaju strikes in 9-0 rout
by Sammy Wejinya

Nigerian striker, Kayode Olarenwaju, scored one and created two assists in Austria Wien’s 9-0 win over Mattersburg in Austria’s Bundesliga on Saturday.

His solitary strike in the 36th minute temporarily put his side 2-0 up in a largely one-sided contest decided at Pappelstadion.

Good work on the left between Lucas Venuto and Alexander Grünwald saw the latter squaring for Olarenwaju who coolly slotted home past the stranded Mattersburg goalkeeper, Markus Kuster.

Olarenwaju had earlier provided the assist for Austria Wien’s first goal, finished off with an emphatic header by Alexander Gorgon.

Another assist by the Nigerian in the 87th minute saw Venuto make it 7-0 before two more goals were added late on by the visitors to complete a lop-sided result.

Olarenwaju has scored 12 league goals for Austria Wien this season.

Awoniyi in action for FSV Frankfurt

by Samm Audu

Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said his German Bundesliga 2 side FSV Frankfurt need at least two wins to avoid relegation this season.

Awoniyi, who is on loan till the end of the season from Liverpool, said he is not pleased that FSV Frankfurt are lying precariously on the lower end of the table as the German second tier league nearing its conclusion.

"We are presently 15th on the table and we need at least two more wins to move away from the relegation zone," hinted lad that has featured for all age-grade Nigeria national teams.

Former Golden Eaglets striker Awoniyi said he is confident he will grab when FSV Frankfurt visit Sandhausen today in the competitive 2.Bundesliga.

"We need to work extra hard to claim the maximum points against Sandhausen and I have this great feeling of scoring at least a goal with the grace of God."

Awoniyi only scored his first goal in the colours of FSV Frankfurt after a difficult start last month against Heidenheim and he sounded optimistic ahead of today’s away trip to Sandhausen.

"It's been over a month when I scored my first goal for FSV Frankfurt and I'm working hard to score more," noted the 18-year-old forward.

"I'm happy with my form because I have been playing regularly since the start of the second phase but I wish I can score more goals."

Report To Camp Tomorrow(today) Or Forget It, Siasia Tells Players
— Apr 24, 2016 5:11 am

Head Coach of the Nigeria U-23 team, Samson Siasia has declared that any of the players invited from the domestic scene who fails to report to camp by tomorrow, April 25, 2016 should not bother coming to camp.

He said instead of waiting for players to come to camp on their own time, he will rather work with only players available in camp and are willing to play at the Olympics.

“I want to work with only the players on ground, and to get them to the shape I want,” he insistd.

On the issue of other teams in Nigeria’s Group B already announcing plans to include very experienced over-aged players, the U-23 gaffer said the technical crew and the players are not scared of any individual player, but would rather bother about the quality of opposition at the Olympics’ football event.

“Yes, I have read of plans by Sweden to include someone like Zlatan Ibramovich as one of their over –aged players for the Games. Good for them, but as far as we are concerned, there is nothing like fear. For us, we are trying to put up a team, and that will determine which players we are going to bring. We have played against players of stronger calibre than Zlatan. We have played against Lionel Messi and Di Maria and others.

Nigerian Exports: Iheanacho, Akpoveta & Kayode On Song; Gero Finally Debuts; Porto
23rd April, 2016

Allnigeriasoccer.com reviews the performances of players of Nigerian descent in Europe on Saturday.

As previously reported, Kelechi Iheanacho(Man City), Obi Mikel(Chelsea) and Sheyi Ojo(Liverpool) featured for their respective teams in the English Premier League on Saturday, but the highlight of the performance came from the City number 72 who notched a brace in his side’s 4-0 rout of Stoke City.

In the FA Cup, Ross Barkley was on from start to finish as Everton crashed out of the competition, losing 2-1 to Manchester United at the Wembley Stadium. The midfielder was cautioned in the 89th minute.

Across the border in Scotland, Abiola Dauda made his ninth appearance in the top-flight, coming off the bench in the 68th minute as Hearts lost 1-0 to Motherwell.

In the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Chidozie Awaziem was an unused substitute in Porto’s 2-1 victory against Academica.

Still in Portugal, Nigeria international Abdullahi Shehu missed Uniao da Madeira’s 2-0 loss to Sporting CP following his red card last weekend versus Pacos de Ferreira.

Former Flying Eagles star Alhaji Gero finally made his league debut for Oestersunds FK in their goalless draw with Gefle in the Swedish Allsvenskan. He was in action for 61 minutes, while his teammate Omoh Michael was introduced 18 minutes from time.

One division lower, ex-Warri Wolves striker Oke Akpoveta continued his purple patch in front of goal, scoring for the third game on the spin as Frej fell 2-1 to ängelholm . He scored after 11 minutes and played the full game.

In the Austrian Bundesliga, Olarenwaju Kayode helped himself to his 12th goal of the season in the 36th minute as Austria Vienna demolished Mattersburg 9-0. The attacker, who went the distance, was credited with two helpers in the 10th and 87th minute.

Super Eagles youngster Umar Aminu played the entirety of Osmanlispor FK’s 3-0 win against Antalyaspor. Teammate Raheem Lawal was introduced in the 71st minute.

Iheanacho set for Madrid

By Shina Oludare

The Citizens face Zinedine Zidane’s side in the Champions League semis on Tuesday and the forward feels his side can contain the Spaniards

Kelechi Iheanacho believes Manchester City are ready for Tuesday’s Uefa Champions League game first leg semi-final clash against Real Madrid.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men will be hoping to begin reach the final of the competition, but first must scale Zinedine Zidane side’s hurdle at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium.

And having tamed Stoke City 4-0 in the English topflight on Saturday, the Nigerian believes the victory over the Potters has primed the side for the Spaniards.

"This game [against Stoke] was great preparation for us before we play Real Madrid. On Tuesday, we need to focus and work hard because they're a good side. We are prepared to face them,” Iheanacho told club website.

"The Champions League is a big tournament so we need to focus and get the mood ready and get everything right to play. We must work hard and concentrate on every ball.

"We really need to win here because at their home it's not going to be an easy game. It's a great achievement for the club to be in the last four of the tournament but it would be a dream to get to the final so we're really hoping for that.”

Iheanacho striker has linked up excellently with Sergio Aguero in his first season as part of the senior squad and he expects that to continue when given the chance to play throughout the remainder of the season.

"I'm very pleased to play with Sergio. It's a big thing so I'm really happy and looking forward to playing with him in the future,” he continued.

"I really need to work hard every game and every training. Every time I'm in I really need to show character and show that I deserve to be in the team so I really work hard until the end."

IROBISO SCORES VITAL MATCH WINNER FOR FARENSE

Former Pacos de Ferreira, Uniao Madeira and Senica forward, Christian Okechukwu Irobiso scored a very important winner for Farense to help them beat Atletico CP 2-1 to bring some ray of hope in their fight to beat the drop to the third division in Portugal.

Irobiso struck in the first minute of time added on in the first half for his third goal of the season which took Farense point tally for the season to 49, two points away from safety.

22 year old Irobiso has been in Europe since the 2011/2012 season when he joined Pacos de Ferreira before leaving on loan to Uniao Madeira the next season.

He returned to Pacos de Ferreira where he played for two more seasons before heading to Slovakia where he spent a season with Senica, a short spell with Czech Republic side Vysocina Jihlava followed suite before he returned to Portugal last season.

Last season he scored six times from 23 games for Farense but he has so far failed to hit that same height this season with just three goals to his name from 34 games.

22nd placed Farense also have two other Nigerians on their books in Femi Balogun and Sunday Akinbule.

Stats prove who is the deadlier striker out of Marcus Rashford and Kelechi Iheanacho

17:22, 24 Apr 2016 Updated 17:42, 24 Apr 2016
By James Robson
Rashford and Iheanacho have burst onto the scene this season - but who has made the bigger impact?

They are two of the most exciting talents to emerge in the Premier League this season - but who is the deadliest striker out of Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcus Rashford?
Both teenagers have burst onto the scene for their respective clubs Manchester City and Manchester United - and have been tipped to star for years to come.
Rashford has arguably made the bigger impact for his club - playing a pivotal role in United’s path to the FA Cup final.
But it is Iheanacho, who comes out on top statistically - despite being limited in his number of first team opportunities behind Sergio Aguero.
The Nigerian international has scored 11 goals in 896 minutes this season, compared to Rashford’s seven in 1,092 for United.
The 19-year-old has a ratio of a goal every 81 minutes, while Rashford, 18, scores one every 156.
It raises the question about just how much of an impact Iheanacho could have made if handed more starts this season.
Incredibly, Rashford - who only made his debut on February 25 - has started 14 times compared to the City man’s 11 since his first appearance on August 29.
The United starlet has an impressive record of a goal every other start, while many of Iheanacho’s have come from off the bench.
He scored two against Stoke on Saturday to emphasise Manuel Pellegrini’s belief that he will shine under incoming City manager Pep Guardiola.
The Chilean said: "Kelechi will have an important role in this club in the next years. He is not only a striker who scores goals in the box.
"He contributes in the way the team plays. He scores two goals, he receives a penalty. I am very pleased."
Louis van Gaal, meanwhile has compared to Rashford to legendary players he's worked with in the past.

"I go to Ajax and Patrick Kluivert, 18-years-old, made the same performances as Marcus Rashford," he said. "I can give a lot of examples, it is not new.
"At Bayern Munich it was Thomas Muller, at Barcelona, Xavi was 18-years-old and Iniesta 17-years-old, and (Thiago) Motta was also 18-years-old, who is now playing at Paris Saint-Germain. It is not strange. Age is not the big issue. Quality is the big issue."

Go back to the beginning of this thread, you will see I am not a Coach Siasia person. I am just pointing out the fact from articles.

Coach Siasia did well in the U20 in 2005 and in the Olympics, leading us to the finals. His system led us that far.

Past articles showed Chikatara, Adi and Samuel could not meet up. Please, did I invent that?

I wish this analyst explained to us why our team in the U23 Championship leaked goals. If he thinks a Pirlo like player and a box to box player is what we need in our midfield, then this guy is missing an important fact.

If this guy can tell me Azubuike and Etebo can shield our defence better than Mikel, then Coach Siasia should drop Mikel.

If they can not shield the defence better than Mikel, then Mikel should go to the tournament. It is as simple as that.

If that is your conclusion then, Coach Samson Siasia is blind. You can't be subject to just rigorous training a lone and then get the best out of your selection. Am gradually loosing interest in this Olympics team already. I smell.............

I did not say Coach Siasia relies strictly on rigorous training alone. That is like saying Jurgen Klopp and Pellegrini rely on rigorous training alone.

They do not. They have other drills but it takes a lot of work rate to play at a high tempo. So some of these Coaches make their players work hard in similar circumstances in training and pick those who perform better.

what is the importance of these rigorous drills. We were unable to defeat the egyptians, we won just a point from a possible 6 with these drills. That is not good enough. We should stop overhyping this Rigorous uncommon training if it will not bring the best out of our players.

My brother joe, Egypt outplayed us in the 1st half of the second leg.

1st leg yes we dominted them but 2nd they dominated and bombarded us with numerous shots. Our boys had 0 shot on target in the first half. The bombardment continued in the second half till they scored their goal.

Kouka Hassan Didn't Fit Into My Plans - Hector Cuper (Egypt National Team Coach)

The Argentine coach also responded to why he didn’t play top striker Ahmed ‘Kouka’ Hassan during the win over the Eagles even as fans were calling on the coach to bring on the striker.

“I have nothing against Hassan, he is an important player for our team but I felt this wasn’t the kind of game I needed him,”

“He didn’t fit into my plans so that’s why he didn’t get to start. There are many other games and he will get his chance just like everyone else on the team."
http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/03/cuper-praises-eagles/

If it was Coach Siasia, we would say he is making space for his boys. It is not the stats of the players that matters but if the coach feels the player fit in. It is not a Coach Siasia issue.

What is the reason of the drills?

The Coaches uses these drills to find the best players to fit into his system. It is not a guarantee that Tiki Taka or Parked Bus or long thrust will qualify us.

Every Coach has his system. Guardiola loves fluid passing and off the ball movement into spaces to keep the passes going.

Mourinho likes a strong defensive unit, all players working hard together to make them hard to score against. Then he likes sharp direct attack play.

Bielsa likes to press and prevent the other team for playing their game. He loves a high tempo attacking play.

Pellegrini sits deep when he does not have the ball and he likes swift counter attacks with sharp interplay.

All these coaches have different drills to select the best players for their systems.

The Coaches have won memorable games and they have also been on the other end of heavy defeats.

I find it rather surprising why somebody stick with a system that is biased. Biased in the sense that, you have to leave out quality just to honour your self imposed way of doing things, I mean doctrine. Too bad. That is why theories are different from realities. As a Coach, I rather design a system that marries theory with reality. My system must not be biased. It must marry theory and practice. I can't allow rigorous training becloud my sense of judgement when it comes to player selection. I can't pick players just because the do well with rigorous training and leave out quality players. Mba.

*****ItCan'tFitHappen****

Guardiola let Ronaldinho go, who was one of the best players in the world because he did not fit into his system. Does that mean Guardiola is biased? Mancini let Shay Given go, who was one of the best shot stoppers for Joe Hart who just came back from a loan spell at Birmingham. Joe Hart expected to go back to Birmingham for the Preseason but Mancini refused and took Joe Hart on tour. When the final list came out, Mancini made Joe Hart his number one keeper.

Guardiola preferred Busquets to Yaya Toure. Another Coach like Mourinho might prefer Yaya to Busquets.

It is not bias. Coach Siasia has his system and routines. Those who can complete them better than the others gets the nod.
