No 1 isn't a lie sir, everyone just have to be very careful so as not to be a victim. Most of the things that happen doesn't come online. Stoning too is very common or am I lying top??

No 2 is an interference, so sorry for that.

No 3 is a truth, people here smoke inside car, secretly. Infact I have a Yoruba guy that smokes, in other not to be stoned he smokes inside. It may vary from place to place and as you know Kano is too big. I can't tell you I have seen people smoke openly. Those that do in schools also do it secretly.

No 3 is a pure truth. Except if my student's lie to me, except if you are the only Hausa guy. except if my HOD is a fake Hausa man or except you want to lie.
1. U still can't prove that anyone has his hands chop off for talking to a woman or anyone been stone for that matter. If you can accept your assertion as rumour or prepossessed opinion if would have been easy. FYI the only place in the north where someone hands was chop off was in zamfara and it happens only once around 2003.
3. I can tell u would be easily laugh off about smoking been prohibited in kano. Smoking is not only been done in the whole of state but it is even encourage by peers. The highest numbers of smokers I really know apart from katsina is kano. You can even check ndlea report which I earlier posted about smoking habit in kano. It is only in kano that you would find a whole house including the father who are habitual smokers. The issue of smoking prohibition in kano is not only a lie but very mischievous.
4. Just last week I am in kano and I was opportune to help my sister drop her two children in one private school that is neither own by a Muslim nor did they taught islamiyya there. The only time that they attend islamiyya is on weekend and 7 to 8:30 pm everyday.
So OP leave your experience as merely experience but not the actual truth

I will draw the attention of your state coordinator to this. You spent less than two months in kano and you have the audacity to come online and rain curses on our religion, culture and ways of life right? Are you the first corper to serve in kano? Why cant you speak good or keep silent?

Mrphysics you are contributing to the derailment of your thread. Why not ignore them and continue your story. Responding to all of them will only take you back and forth but truth be told there is more for you to know about kano.
Things you should note:
1. Smoking is not banned (you can try to verify that)
2. No one will cut your hand because you are talking to à married woman. They might berate you in certain instances at most.
3. The Islamiyya thing is partly true (i say this because some of the poor and illiterate parents do this but its not common especially in cities)
4. The stoning part is true but it mostly happens when you go to areas with largely illiterate and unexposed inhabitants, there you will find many almajiri boys who like to look for trouble. If you must go to such areas dress conservatively. However, for most part of the city you will hardly experience such.

Why the threat? Where did he do the bolded that you are accusing him of?. True he got "some things" wrong about kano, the best you can do is correct his misconceptions not resort to blackmail. His experience are his not anybody's. Nobody is stopping anybody from sharing theirs.

I will admit that some don't go to school. They go to Quranic school (Makarantar Allo) only. And that is what we call Almajiri, they come from neighboring state just to study Quran.

Don't mind the op.
Imagine a mosque between every five houses? not even in Saudi Arabia will you see such.
your attempt at describing kano is like that of a man who tries to describe the sea just by observing a droplet of water.

So your aim is to bastardise the children of other people without seeing anything wrong with it because you're so educated and well civilized.
If that is so, well, i can't blame us for being overprotective.

You think You're so educated yet you believe whoever doesn't knows how to speak good English is an illiterate. Pardon me saying that, that's a slave mentality.
if you've the time and means try and travel around the world to places like Japan, China, Russia, India, to see how wondrously intelligent they are yet they barely speak English.
However, if you still resolve to keep your induced idea of education then I will agree you're just another indoctrinated robot.

For saying that no.religion is better than another shows that you're a hypocritical asshole#, (I'm sorry to say that). if not, then time you go to church do endeavor to preach to your brethren that their religion is no better than that of the terrorists and senseless islamiyya pidophiles.

I'm a northerner bro, a hausa-fulani man from Kano. don't assume I'm a Muslim.

I will advise you; you truly wish to understand northerners and their ways you need to remove your judgmental googles you wore from the south, see the north through the northern eye, befriend their males too. then you'll understand why and how.

Empty your cup!

All of una don spoil dis story for me. Op nor sabi, e nor get experience, I agree but just let him tell his damn story. This thread is suddenly full of all kano inhabitants now. phewwwwww! Make una create una thread leave op alone.v

Why all these unnecessary defence? It shows intolerance and conservatism, which is the point OP is trying to make.

I too served in Kano about 8 years ago!
Yes, male-female relationship is highly controlled in Kano. As a foreigner you are safer when you understand how the local rules work.

I remember back in BUK, some male students made it a point of duty to always monitor me and my female Hausa corper friend, cause of them I always kept my office door open as I had nothing to hide. However, back at my Lodge an old neighbour almost married off a teenage girl to me cause, he complains everytime am coming back "Aquai Mata". He was really worried that I had no woman. Contrast that.

Further - I remember several times my female colleagues would run back to the lodge because a group of kids were throwing stones at them. We sent our Hausa colleagues to find out why, and it was apparently due to their dressing

I was once stuck in front of a mosque on a Friday, while walking home with my female Hausa friend(no taxi or bus), the police in front of the mosque almost went berserk on us for walking close to each other while in front of the mosque at prayer time, claiming we could cause a mob action. Had to give the chick 50m or so.

I spent at least 3 emergency nights at military Baracks whenever we heard something happened in town. Our Lodge was not in Sarbon Gari, but rather near Kofa Gardon Kaya.

Saying or Claiming Kano is just like Abuja or Lagos is only going to be a disservice to both the natives, and the visitors, cause the later would assume and end up offending the former.

I enjoyed my stay in Kano, explored and made some of my best friends while there! I won't hesitate to visit again, but that is ultimately because I got to understand the societal fabrics and values of the people. The OP did not set out to paint an evil picture of Kano, but the kind of attack he is getting is forcing him into a defensive stance that is now sounding defiant and tending towards a hack job. Totally unnecessary.

If you are a Kano native, instead of these attacks, why not describe the relevant value system and help others to understand. Kano does not have to be like Lagos, or Abuja, it has its own distinct flavour. And we will all do well to preserve it as well as eliminate the misunderstandings by explaining it to visitors.

It's true that most of this Almajiri in Kano are not from the state, but one keep imagining why a woman will give birth and carry the person to another state without life's basic amenities.

They don't have cloths, not an accommodation, as I write to you now, they are outside playing football, making noise. they are littered everywhere. This people sleep on the ground, beside fence, in front of shops, come rain, come sun. I must admit the charity Kano rich men give to them, some of the big people around here cook for this Almajiris.

During this Ramadan, the love among this people can not be over emphasized, they will gather in one place and eat like a family. One day as I went to buy something, I saw one Alhaji stop in front of his house to give this people orange and other fruits not minding how dirty they make his fence to look.

But many questions need to be asked about Kano Almajiris, why are there always male?? Why send them to Kano to learn only religious studies without the hope of western education?? Why is it that they don't always go back to their state of origin.

I think the Federal government can pack all this guys to a good place, provide them with western education and train them as special forces. Most of this guys are the ones that cause violence in Kano.

Let me come into ur conversation, it will take at least 4yrs of infrastructures building in kaduna and non in kano for kaduna to meet up. Kaduna city have only one fly over bridge (kawo) which is about 100m meters and 3 LGAS which makes d state capital whereas kano city has 9LGAs and many historical ancient sites like great walls of kano which is believe to b over 1000yrs, city gates, famous kantin kwari and kurmi markets, industrial estates and many more, bulk of kaduna city is GRA esp kaduna north as for kano it's is d commercial hub of d north which is synonymous to lagos if u minus lagoon. Many fly overs, under pass, kano have 2 state owned university (KUT and north-west uni) compared to one in kaduna, kaduna city is religiously divided kaduna Muslims predominately live in kaduna north while kaduna xtians and settlers (Muslim n xtians) in kaduna south which is demarcated by bridge on top river kaduna. Like d op said kano ppl don't joke with there religion but it should not not a problem if u simply respect there culture.

Alright sir, thanks for opening up. I will have to do a further research on this topic. I googled top 10 beautiful cities in Nigeria, i didn't see Kano oo but Kadunna is in all the links that appeared. I will have to enquire further, Thanks.

When I came to my PPA, as soon as I was accepted, I started looking for the does and don'ts of this place. TRUTH be told, they are many things to avoid here. Many things need to be avoided here in Kano. The way you talk, dress, how you eat, the way you relate with people. Here I have many friends, many friends who are from Kano, though they are nice but that religious issue will keep resurfacing.

When I met some friends here, they are students of some higher institutions here, I helped them solve some of their past questions, Infact, I was invited to their school to teach them, I went and delivered my service to humanity, I wasn't given even water to wash my hand. But one thing I noticed is that no matter how close you are to them, as soon as they notice you are not a Muslim then a line have been drawn.

I was shocked when after teaching one of my friend, he spent about 35 minutes telling me about Islam and why I need to join Islam. I had no option than to listen to him. The boldness he had was encouraging. Also my Hausa friend told me that the main criteria to marry her is that I join Islam, Infact she went to the extent of telling me who to meet to get converted. The boldness and authority they use in telling you about their faith is shocking though commendable.

I was often times told by my students that Religion is the first and foremost in whatever they do. I will be lecturing and I will be told that it's time for Islamiyya. I have had to stop lecture to wait for my students to go and pray. Infact I had a fixed lecture, when I came for the lecture, my students told me that its time for prayer and that THEY MUST go. I dare not prevent them seeing that religion is first because I can't imagine such happen in the west, south or east. Immediately after the afternoon prayer, I taught for about 1hr and I was told that it's time for islamiyya and that was how the lecture ended.
