RESCUE THESE TROJAN J185!!!

These batteries have been through thick and thin.

Recently, the user called and said batteries get hot when charging.
Take a closer look at the cells, you will see Lead fragments short-circuiting the plates, and that is why its getting hot.

The electrolyte also gets dried too fast these days.

Inverter: 5kW 48V MustPower set to about 25-30A Charging current (measured with FLUKE clamp meter). The batteries are 8 in number, 4 in series, 2 in parallel.

1. Are there battery plates (the thick ones) in market for sale (remember old battery chargers who rebuild vehicle batteries by replacing old plates with new).

2. Can we open up these batteries, change the cell, seal it back, put fresh and right acid-distilled-water mix, and continue the battery life?

The batteries are just 2 years old.

Thank you in anticipation of a good solution from the house.

B. In addition, anybody having the contact of Wind Generator dealer could drop a note for me.

unlike PV it has installation disadvantage. it must always be on the roof to allow flow by gravity. PV can be installed almost everywhere/anywhere open even has ur car park/dog cage etc

well, from ur effort I admit it is practicable & can be factorized to cost of completing a new site.

as solar freak, I know it pays to live green may by it will add a decade to our original lives.

a big thanks to you!

BRAND NEW 15A/100V MPPT CHARGE CONTROLLER FOR SALE.

Good for 200/400 watts on 12/24 system. If you already have like 30a or 40a cc and you're wishing you had a bigger cc to accommodate a couple more panels, you can add this to what you already have.

Price 25k

Will definitely have something like this when the time comes cheesy
GeorgeD1:
efuro,
abunafiu,
dmerciful,
johnkester,
all,

still on my solar water heater calculations, i made a very optimistic assumption in my
calculations about the availability of public power which i thought some keen member would
point out to the house. i had allocated a 12hr average power supply per day in arriving at my
monthly running cost for electric water heaters. now, the question is, what if supply increases
more than 12hrs? then the running cost gets higher. again, what if there's no power at all? then
you are left with no choice than to run your fuel guzzling plant to power your water heater
(that is for those that can afford it) or alternatively you're forced to go cold - no hot water, no joy!
and i dare say that there are countless households where their electric water heaters have
become mere objects of decoration - disused and abandoned all because there is seldom
public power to run them and the 2.5kva or 5kva generators they have just can't cope
with the added load. on the other hand, with solar water heaters, the more the sunshine,
the merrier! and even on cloudy days, you still get hot water because you don't need
the full intensity of sunshine for your vacuum tubes to work.

efuro,

fortunately again, that's not correct. the solar water heater can be installed just about anywhere.
the most important thing is direct and unhindered access to sunlight - much like normal pv modules.
so, what applies to solar pv also applies to it and perhaps to a lesser degree.
there are different variations in installation models. you can even install on the flat ground right in
front of your house. no water tower, no need to mount it on the roof. the possibilities are endless.
as for waiting until you want to set up a new site, again, there is no need for that. solar water heaters
can always be modified to fit into any existing plumbing system. that is what i did. the only thing
that you need to consider is the exact location where you want the water heater to be and then
your plumber will modify your house piping network accordingly.

funny enough, even as a tenant, you can still use solar water heaters. it's really amazing what
the human mind can achieve if only we choose to think outside the box.

break the myth!

please clarity how a system installed at ground level will supply hot water to lintel level or are you referring to a system that uses a pressure pump?

HMM this is really straNGE FOR 2YR OLD TROJANS,
did you buy them brand new?.

if you bought them brand new, only thing i know that may have caused this is having a too concentrated electrolyte in the batteries that will corrode the plates, and maybe not desulphating them at regular intervals, will also cause the electrolyte to separate out, with the conc part at the bottom...causing corrosion.
does the owner have a hydrometer?. is he guilty of any of the points i listed?
sorry cant help you as per the other questions you asked

I also wondered, given the fact the batteries are only two years old.

Trojan build very good batteries and it would take a lot of misuse and abuse for this level of damage to occur within such a short period of use.

Before fixing the batteries themselves, I will suggest you investigate what caused the damage to the batteries in the first place. I suspect any of the following may have happened:

1. Topping the batteries with acid instead of distilled water as a lot of people are still under the notion that acid is used to top up batteries when the level of electrolyte becomes low. The acid will corrode the plates and damage them.

2. The charger may also be the culprit, if it was not regulating the charging. Consistent and uncontrolled overcharging can also strip away the plates and cause similar damage. If regular battery charger was used, it is better to switch to a regulated multiphase charger. If a charge controller is used assuming the person is using solar, then the CC is not working well and should be changed.

3. Consistent and regular deep discharge can also strip the plates, thereby also resulting to similar damage.

If 1 and 3 above are ruled out, then whatever device was used to charge the batteries is not suitable and should be changed forthwith.

The owner, however, should bear in mind that even if the batteries get repaired, they are most likely not going to perform as originally designed to perform by Trojan.

Cheers
Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by GeorgeD1(m): 2:22pm On Nov 24, 2016
dmerciful,
exactly. and thanks for asking.
you can install a pressurized system and this instantly changes the dynamics
of everything. if you have solar pv already, then a small pressure pump using
dc wouldn't be such a big deal. then you wouldn't need gravity to feed your hot water
tank and so no need for a water tower or roof mount.
if i were living in temporary accommodation and i absolutely must install a solar
water heater, then i'd go for this option.
another advantage of this method is its mobility. when its time for you to leave
your temporary abode, all you do is pack it up and off you go!

dmerciful,
the thread is already active enough as it is. with my seemingly undying passion for solar water heaters you would be forgiven to think it's the next best thing after sliced bread - or maybe it is. grin but the fact remains that considering the push back from peeps so far, we were once like this when the issue of solar pv was being touted a few years back. many never saw the viability of it all until it's widespread adoption.
that said I think besides a few hobbyists and diyers like me still remaining on the thread, most wouldn't be bothered about posting or replying to anything unless there is something in it for them to gain and probably when they want to sell something to others. grin

Yeah but there is massive room for improvement for instance the world is moving towards lithium ion with thousands of cycles at very high DOD, we need to explore that option. i even heard of salt water cell with 10,000 cycles! we need new durable possibilities cheesy cheesy cheesy

As per harvest,
I am fortunate to have a 4kw PV array being controlled by a classic 150 mppt device. My battery bank is 48v 450ah Trojans. My inverter is also a 4kw Mustpower Inverter charger. From lessons learnt from seniors, I had to add 2 MNSPD for extra protection against surges, ligthnenng etc.
I have been living off grid for almost 6 months now.
My harvest has between 10kwh and 16kwh daily.
By 6am my battery voltage is usually not less than 49v except for few instances where I recorded 48.5v.
Even though I recently observed some slacks in 2 of my Trojans (bought June 2014) but the overall performance is still like new. I observed that each time I drain the battery bank below 47V, those 2 batts will drop to 3.8v while others remain at 5.9v. Since I observed this I have always avoided deep discharge though once in a while I have to. But I can comfortable discharge my battery to 47v without any worries. The problem starts when I go deeper than 47v which should be totally avoided.
So I plan to remove the the 2 batteries over time but replacement is not an option for now due to unavailability of the batts nationwide. (interested seller can pm me if you have 2 spare T105 Trojan for sale).
Saipro was kind enough to share a solution to me(not battery repairs) I am yet to implement his ideas but I am sure it's going to work since he uses d same.
Owning the classic mppt was one of the best decision I have taken thanks to Saipro.

Do you equalize? I had the same experience and after a series of equalization routines they stopped. Turn the inverter off and let your midnight classic equalize at 62 for 1 hour. Repeat every thirty days.
Also move the batteries around or change your connections. I do mine once a year. I run my strings through a bus bar and I have had better results since.

Robust system you have and with you battery bank capacity you will be able to adhere to max of 30% DOD unlike us killing the batteries we have due to low bank capacities. I always prefer sealed batteries for safety reasons and the nature of my house but they sure arent as rugged or durable as the flooded types....considering migration sha but the cost is scary now grin
