Well my journey into atheism was a gradual process..
I've always hated how my parents would force me to go to church, but you know, you just have to keep quiet.

So I started following atheist pages, something was spectacular about these people, they asked really interesting questions, but because back then I was scared of hell, I would be like "may God have mercy on their soul".. These atheists were really thinking wise, but I just didn't want to think for myself because I might end up in hell..

Then I had second thoughts, looked at the Bible, saw how" bullshitic" the Bible was, and then yes! I stopped giving a Bleep about God and religion, my fear for eternal damnation disappeared, but I kept my atheism to myself. Until..

One day, they were forcing me to go to church.. Long story short, I told them my mind "I don't believe in God, even if there is a God, and he is the idiot portrayed in the Bible, then he should go to hell for all i care".. They were like" Jesus "... They started telling my uncles

My uncles will call me.. There was one in particular that called me and told me how he converted an atheist to a Christian, I just said" he was never an atheist to begin with "...

He was telling me a lot of things that only made sense to Christians, quoting the book of lies to me. . He was sending a lot of fictional Christian experiences (you know the type they keep posting on fb).. I just told him

Great posts you have up there sir... Just that I don't share the perspective of religious people, you believe in God, great, I don't believe and all I'll need to believe is just an atom of evidence, but not from the Bible because surely the Bible is just a product of a man's hallucinations or delusions, and that's what everyone is following blindly... If there is a God, then he is not the God portrayed by the Bible, but if he is the god portrayed by the Bible, then I prefer hell and Satan, because the god of the Bible has attributes of a man, jealousy, wickedness, possessiveness, and come to think of it, in the Bible, the devil killed just 10 people, but God killed millions.. So this is why I don't think I'll serve an immoral being whom would burn me for just disobeying him!...

It's really a long story though, but I don't have the time to share..

I dont think am an atheist (yet). But i will like to know, what do u call a person who believes in God but does not believe in christianity and anything written in any of the holy books? @benzics

it was my best friend that told my parents, my "Caring" friend who was the only one i told till then

My parents took it surprisingly easy, so easy that I kicked myself for having hid it from them in the first place, my mother is Norwegian and my father Nigerian, my mother was the first to ask me and I confessed to her, she just told me its my choice and they'll pray for god to reveal himself to me, they however still want me attending the church they went to and told me that not every church goer is a theist "who knows" they said "you might encounter god in a service"; I however told them that I won't attend any vigil again; family members from my father's side however took it as though I just mortally beat everyone on earth to death even using my dumping religion as a sign of "Failed Parenting", my parents however always kept their cool and said its my choice (that rubbed off on me too) news of my atheism spread like wildfire; so many people started calling me and advising me, what strikes me the most however was their wishing evil upon me "its because you haven't faced any problem in life, when you face a problem that the solution isn't known, you'll remember god"; I was still in my early teenage years and it was confusing seeing my parents being cool with it and extended families feeling so bad for me and wishing me misfortune

school almost became a nightmare as I lost certain good and serious friends who were probably told by their parents or certain teachers to "avoid" me cuz I'm son of the devil himself and I'll drag them away from god into hell with me

internet hadn't spread, my parents restricted the "dial up" and only they use it (early internet users would know) perhaps a trick to make me concentrate more on my studies so I didn't have the luxury new atheists of today had, it was tough coping as a teenager and the ONLY "atheist" in the world (that was how I saw it, I hadn't even known what they call someone who doesn't believe in a god is)

while my parents weren't vehemently against my becoming an atheist, they weren't encouraging it either, just indifferent to a slightly annoying level, perhaps they feel I'm doing really well academically, my behaviour is actually too mature for my age and feel they don't want to disrupt that by forcing something else into the equation

I left my parent's house at a very young age so I stopped going to church altogether; my mother though calls me once in a while to attend a church nearest to me even if I don't believe in the god, I oblige every time if I can; she still hopes I'll find god but doesn't want to force it


let me end this by saying I don't want any atheist to be emboldened by my story and quickly tell their parents, test the waters first! what rocked my boat may sink and corrode yours!!

Wooow,, I've told almost all my friends and they challenged me, which they later give up saying "devil is really dwelling in me",, my siblings knows about it (an elder brother, elder sister and junior sister) and I was surprised I wasn't alone in the family,, they (siblings) are not into the" bible" of a thing
They all advised me not to tell momsy or other elder relative yet until I'm done with my schooling

For the record, I'm not an atheist.. I just don't believe in any god or some book that was written by a nerd

when they call us "devil" they don't even realise the irony staring them in the face

most of these people calling us devil are not as well behaved as us,

its ironic that these are the people you know are thieves, corrupt, pedophiles, nymphomaniacs, chronic liars etc have the temerity to look you in the face and call you devil, even if you're considering theism, these people destroy every chance of it!

Was a closet atheist for many years through childhood. Never even knew what atheist meant i just didnt believe in yahweh. I stopped going to church when i was 12. But you know they forced me with house fellowship and dumped me in a christian secondary school. Lol. I played along. Graduated as the atheist headboy in a christian school. Lol nobody knew about my beliefs in school. I graduated and still remained a closet atheist until 2 years ago where i came across a fellow atheist here on nairaland. I realised i wasnt alone. I realised i wasnt the devil my parents and friends made me believe i was. I came out fully as an atheist. Facebook. Everywhere. The outpouring of hate and accusations from christians and family was expected. Mom later came to terms with it. Bro became an atheist too. Sister still wont accept my beliefs but shes gradually warming up to me. As for the so called friends, i only have 3 friends in this life so far. They only 1 is a christian and infact he's even converting. The rest are atheist like me. In conclusion, its so ironic how the so called christians who preach a so called religion of love lack that very quality. If any of them had guns, they would have shot me!

Lets just imagine yahweh is the real deal, honestly speaking i dont see myself praising and singing for eternity to an all powerful, jealous, mysognistic, out of control blood thirsty maniac. At least id have my freedom with lucifer. Id be with bright minds like zuckerburg, elon musk, bill gates. Etc. We'd find ways to engineer hell to make it cold as ice

I had an argument with a friend this morning over "the bible we have is provably incorrect and is obviously the work of primitive men rather than God" after the argument, which he gave up, I asked other buddies who were Christians also, I compare who is better in me and the other guy in terms of righteousness and I got all the votes,,. One of them said to me "you're not a Christian, yet you don't do ungodly things"

My Mom doesn't know I'm an atheist, but she knows I no longer pray/ go to church.
My Dad on the other hand doesn't know I stopped going to church, he doesn't live in Nigeria so I guess I'm lucky

The day he finds out, he's definitely going to disown me

My wife knows am an atheist. She's the only person that knows and she doesn't care. She said God will forgive me cos of her. She'll beg him to take me to heaven she truly means it. No need wasting your time telling people you are an atheist in Nigeria. You can lose a lot.
