5 billion naira per month in handouts? Wow. Why not fix the infrastructure and create a conducive environment for business and wealth creation?

Lol. How bro ? undecided. It is on record that a very high stats of Nigerians are un-banked.

Absolutely.
And how do you get the poor into the system? By creating an incentive to do so.
How do you pay for the incentive? By lowering governments health care bill per family through early immunization of preventable diseases.

Reflating an economy with high inflation? Makes you wonder where these so called policy makers are getting their economics degree from.

Typically, you reflate an economy with a certain degree of deflation - e.g Japan

This types of spending proposed by the federal government has a cost - Typically Nigerians will pay for it either

a) Through increased taxation (which the government is not doing)
b) Fiscal austerity (which the government is not doing)
b) Increased deficit spending
c) Higher inflation

Nigeria's inflation is rather curious as it is imported. Price increases are uneven - on some staples year on year price increases are quite low. The government seems to be trying to domesticate the economy. The 5000 per person will most likely go towards the purchase of local food items and also to local artisans.

Whether it will work is quite another thing but the idea of lifting the domestic economy from the base while favouring large strategic infrastructural investments at the top is interesting. We haven't seen that before. What we've had since 1960 is basically top heavy trickle down economics in which money has flowed outwards in consumptive spending.

This is, it seems to me not just economic management but also large dosage social engineering.

On tax, government is gradually increasing tax. this morning stamp duty was extended to savings accounts. Corporate tax compliance is also hardening amount large non multinationals.

It's an interesting ride. Believe me, one that is presenting opportunities if you know where to look. I've run as part of my business an incubator and an accelerator in Lagos for the last three years and foreign investment is coming in looking for scale.

Wishing you a prosperous New Year

Only God knows who they will select and be paying tax payers money.

You bet they will be 99.9% Fulanis as Buhari believes the Fulanis simply need to milk Nigeria and contribute NOTHING to it's common wealth.

Noone will teach them before they start voicing and shouting out. Hunger will open their voices. This is the biggest scam government I have ever seen.

This policy is aimed at 2019 elections, and nothing more. It is not sensible.

The last thing Nigeria needs right now is a welfare state.

APC deceivers and liars. Laolu Akande should have said FG finally resumes payment of conditional cash transfer to poor nigerians started under Goodluck Jonathan administration, but Buhari and Osinbajo only know how to snatch lie and deceive. Why haven't they increased the amount higher from N5000? Can N5000 buy today what it could buy in Goodluck Jonathan's time?

The poorest citizens should be the beggars at the motor parks. They are the ones who deserve it.

Don't let those beggars deceive u, in 2002, I know a beggar who begs in ebute metta area of lagos state, he sits and begs opposite my friends shop, I traveled to kano and saw this same man raring cattles, he has a lot and when he's done in kano, he comes back to lagos to begg again

This is a formalization of Almajiri system across the country. You can NEVER solve poverty problem by giving out stipends on monthly basis. We are already seeing the negative consequences of states going to Abuja monthly to collect free money thereby perpetuating mental laziness across among state governors. The presidency must be economically daft to think that 5000 monthly will solve any problem, it'll rather lead to further increase in the number of lazy folks who would want to benefit from this reward of laziness. What happens after sharing 5000, are u expecting to make them work harder?

What stops the govt from using that cumulative amount to train these beggers on how to make money, how long will u Pay a 40yr old 5000? Socialist system has never and will never work in a country like ours. I know the target is the North but the truth is that 10yrs from now, the poverty gap between the North and South will double. From free food to free 5k, next will be free house and free wives yet you are borrowing.

Dont be surprise some of those dudes are well comfortable "financially" but they prefer begging as a source of income, while they have stores and co managed by either their kids or spouse. There are also some group of mallams who are being paid % of what they earned by the people who shipped them from the north to various locations to beg and earn

my fellow citizens of this country called Nigeria, good morning.
I believe that most persons on this forum are exposed and have a certain level of education. Also I would want to think that majority of us are YOUTH.

If my assumptions are true then why all these clueless and gullible comments.

1. Nigeria has no data-base: how will they know the poorest persons in the country?

2. I supposed, the money will be paid in the bank: how did they get the account details?

3. This government does everything on media: I bet you this will circulate for a while and die off. remember Saraki case and others, Saraki is still Senate President.

4. Do you not think this is the most foolish idea? What do an average youth spend in a day? how much do you spend in a week?

5. I think as youths this country belongs to us. when do we start holding our leaders accountable. they come up, say one thing or the other and will do nothing about anything.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE AFRAID OF ITS CITIZENS, NOT THE OTHER WAY ROUND.

THAT'S WHY AFRICA CAN NEVER DEVELOP.

SOMETIME LAST YEAR SOMEONE SAID BY DECEMBER RICE WILL BE SOLD 7500 A BAG BUT TILL TODAY I AM BUYING 25000 A BAG.

NOBODY HAS SAID ANYTHING TILL TODAY.

I WEEP FOR THIS NATION.

What is the criteria for vulnerable poor citizens? How did the government got their data? How are we sure that the so called vulnerable poor citizens are what they imply? How are we sure the scheme wouldn't fail like SURE-P
In countries were this welfare services has been active normally, the focus is at first those places we call slums, villages etc

Villagers (headsman or whatever you have) already know who's who. Social development arranges a meeting with the villagers, present their reason for visiting and are handed a list. Home affairs or Social affairs match the names in their system to check and verify them. Obviously, if one has a paycheck, were taxes are drawn, then you get nothing. Same applies to slums. They have ward counsellors, whom are expected to know who's who, drawing a better judgement as to who really deserves social grant. Street hawkers, vendors, trolley pushers, disabled poor......also benefit. For as long as one has no tax number.

The beneficiaries are expected to renew cards, update their details whenever the government feels necessary, as a measure of eradicating the moles in the system.

Unfortunately, corruption wont stop because where civil servants talk money........the rest is inevitable. Question is, will the government be able to sustain it?
