Re: Mission Sambisa!!! (all Is Fair In Love And War) by BiafraBushBoy(m): 12:17pm On Jan 07, 2017
There was nothing like food all this while and we were all running on empty belle. Some of us had to look for dews that fell on grasses and licked the water on it. It wasn’t enough to quench thirst but it was enough to keep us alive. It became more of a shock when one of us opened his radio and fortunately he was having some reception of radio network. It was alleged on news that the terrorists had taken over Bama town, but the Army Chiefs were busy denying it.

“What do we do next?” One of the officers asked our commandant

“We are waiting for orders from the headquarters” He responded

“But we aren’t getting any response” The senior officer added. Meanwhile; I was busy trying to locate Tunji.

“You know where Tunji ran too?” I asked Bright who was reading a very small pamphlet with his mother’s picture by the side

“I don’t know bro” He replied with a very weak voice.

“What is the problem” I asked him. I could feel the emotions in his eyes as he looked at me and said “We are all going to die”.

“How?” I asked surprised. He wasn’t ready to talk and I kept shaking him to say something

“Have you heard about mutiny before?” He asked

“What is the meaning of that?” I asked him because I haven’t heard about such before. He was reluctant to say and I perceived it was going to be bad news.

“Bright say something please” I begged

“What do you want me to say?” He asked back “We ran away from a battlefront and terrorists overtook our base while we ran into the bush. If they find out, we will be court marshaled and either executed or something bad” He explained in a low voice. I never believed I could shout “Jesus” till this point in time.

“But they asked us to retreat” I asked in a low voice while looking around to make sure nobody was listening to our communication.

“What about Tunji” I asked again “I don’t just know” Bright replied confused. Another soldier came along and told us exactly what happened “Most of us had split into smaller group and ran various directions. We tried using our communication equipment to contact other units around us, but it was a futile exercise”.

“Nonsense” I whispered. “Emi bẹ ti a yọ ninu ewu o” (I pray we survive) He whispered in his local language. I looked around and saw the mood of the soldiers around, and it wasn’t a pleasant one. Some of the soldiers with us were injured slightly while some had serious bullet injuries. We tried using some of the local herbs around to treat them, but it wasn’t just getting better.

“Ba su mutu ba” One Hausa soldier was telling his friend. Which meant (Don’t die please). We rushed to meet him, and he has lost and kept losing so much blood.

“Kada ka bar ni in mutu” He kept saying with a weakening voice in Hausa (Don’t let me die please).

We tried to breath in air into his mouth and used a pin we normally use in our shoes with some rope to stich up the tear that allowed blood flow. His pulse was already going down and I knew this would be my second time seeing a fellow soldier die in action. Finally he gave up the ghost.

“We are moving” Our commandant shouted.

“What happens to him?” One of the soldiers questioned

“We are leaving him behind. We don’t have the capacity to carry him along” He said with his Yoruba intonation.

“But…” One of the soldiers was about say before the commandant cut him half way his speech.

“No but… we are leaving” He insisted. It was a code of conduct not to argue with a superior, even when it was a clear ridiculous situation. We left our fallen comrade and continued our journey with nowhere in sight.

“I sabi this road” One of the soldiers said with pidgin English (I know this route). So he was chosen to lead the way, while our commandant stayed at the rear.

“Shhhhsshhh” He said as he gave us commands to lie low. We quickly complied by lying close to a trench that we found inside the jungle there. We never knew that we had approached the main road that was leading to another town differently. We noticed some people well-armed on the road, about seven of them in number.

They were some exchange of words between them and from the way they spoke, they seem to have known themselves for so long or he was trying to make an introduction. The argument continued and tempers were rising and before we knew it… To Be Continued..

Re: Mission Sambisa!!! (all Is Fair In Love And War) by BiafraBushBoy(m): 1:57pm On Jan 08, 2017
Our soldier was shot right there on his chest as he fell like a log of wood. They kicked his body and marched on his dead body.

Our commandant quickly raised his hand, signaling a waiting sign. We held on and probably he was trying to figure out their exact number and possible positions they had taken in diverse places.

We kept on waiting as they gathered close enough and our commandant ordered “Fire”. We opened fire and they responded back almost immediately. We flanked them using our formation and they were caught right there in between our bullets.

“To the car” Our commandant yelled as some of us quickly moved towards the car, overpowered the miscreants there and took the advantageous position with the machine gun and sent all of them down to hell. It was a massacre; a little fraction of them took to their heels and we gunned down as much as we could. Just about two or three managed to escape with gunshots wounds.

“We did it” Rented the whole air. There was a mild jubilation after we secured the area. We searched around for any of them that might have survived and luckily one was alive but was seriously injured. He was dragged out and we rounded him.

“Kada ku kashe ni” (Don’t kill me) was all he kept shouting and kept begging. Lt Col Banji came close and opened his body, and saw the exact place he injured. He brought out a metallic pin and inserted it inside of the hole. He shouted and pleaded for help but that was just the starting.

“Ina da sauran” (Where are the rest) the commandant asked in him Hausa. I was marveled that our very own commandant was fluent in speaking Hausa as a language.

“Ba mu sani ba. Suna kawai ya gaya mana cewa wani zai kai sojoji a wannan wuri” (We don’t know. They just told us that someone will lead soldiers to this place) He said with pains all over his body. That was when we knew that we actually had saboteurs among us.

“To, don me kuka kashe shi ?” (So why did you kill him) Our commandant queried further

“Bai zo da sojoji” (He didn’t come with the soldiers) He responded.

“Not true sir” one of our soldiers who was Hausa added. Everybody immediately turned and look at him in shock.

“He requested for his money first before handing over to them. So they assumed he was not serious and shot him” The soldier said. There was tension in the squad and everyone looked at everyone eyeball to eyeball. “Who was another spy that was with us in the squad” this question filled my mind.

“You come” The commandant yelled pointing towards a specific direction. Everybody kept asking “Me?” till it became obvious that he was pointing at Bright. Bright stepped forward, shivering amidst murmurings from various people in the troop. I was already adjusting my rifle to open fire if he was accused of being the saboteur in the group.

“I rather die alongside him than watch a faithful friend being accused of being a saboteur” I said to myself quietly. He stepped forward and was in the middle, facing the terrorist.

“Do you know him?” The commandant asked Bright

“No Sir” He yelled while standing in a saluting position.

“You sure you don’t know him” Bright was asked again. The commandant tapped him on the back and whispered something into his ears. I kept adjusting my rifle and was at alert in case I needed to open fire.

“Give me your gun” The commandant ordered one of the soldiers around. He quickly handed over his pistol to him and slowly pointed it to Bright’s face. My heart was beating in quick successions and I carefully raised my rifle in a slow manner and was anticipating a shot that would allow me open fire on the devilish commandant.

He continued pointing the gun at Bright’s face and before I could say Jack…

“Have you killed today?” He asked Bright. The question brought shocks to my body and I wondered why he was asked that.

“If you lie, I will blow your head off” He told Bright “I have been watching you and I repeat, have you killed anyone since you came here?” He asked in a more angry tone

“NO sir” Bright responded. There were shouts of disappointments all over the whole place and I myself was more shocked at the answer he gave. I quickly bent my head in shame and looked away from the scene.

“Do you know you are the cause of the death of other comrades?” He asked Bright. While the questioning was going on, I covered my eyes expecting to her hear the sound of gunshot. I kept closing my eyes with my hands while pretending that the sun was quite hot. After few seconds, “boom!!” was the sound I heard. Out of reflex I turned around immediate to find Bright kneeling on the floor.

He was crying and the terrorist was lying lifelessly on the ground with his brains littered all over the floor.

“If you try this again, you will be the one lying next on the floor” The commandant warned Bright.

“We keep moving” He ordered. As we were about starting our movement down the road, I quickly moved up to him

“You have to drop emotions aside” I said to him while holding on to his arms. I dragged him up and helped him pick up his rifle that was almost fully loaded.

“That’s bad… you haven’t released a single bullet” I said in disappointment “This guys will kill you if they find the slightest chance” I repeated. He kept mute and didn’t say a word. He got up; picked up his rifle and we joined the rest of the troop. We were moving in a desert we had no idea about. Everybody was weak having gone for days without food and water. I knew it was a survival of the fittest and only the strong in mind will conquer.

“You have an idea where Tunji would be?” Bright asked me. I looked at him and couldn’t just know the answer to give to him.

“I just hope he is not dead” I replied Bright whose countenance had changed already.

“Someone is down” One of the soldiers shouted. We quickly rushed to his position and his eyes were becoming dim and yellowish already. We searched around for what to give to him but obviously there was nothing

“I think he needs water” A higher officer said

“We don’t water to give and there is nothing we can do about it” Commander Banji interrupted our little discussion

“What do we do Sir?” Another officer asked “We can’t leave him here” Another added. I peeped through his badge and saw “Usman” written on it. “Was he not the guy that lost his brother few hours ago?” I whispered to Bright

“He is the one” Bright responded “Oh God” I cried silently.

“We are moving” Commander Banji shouted. One of the officers went to explain to the commander but he was clearly in no mood for such explanations

“If he doesn’t die now, he will still die when we are under attack” He explained. Looking at him weak and struggling for life made me wonder what kind of life we were living as military officers in this country. We continued trekking without any direction and the other soldier carrying Pvt Usman had to call for help from another soldier. Another soldier took over carrying him and it wasn’t for long before our attention was called again.

“He is dead” The soldier murmured bitterly. I removed my face and couldn’t watch how a gallant soldier died because of water. We were trained to survive insurgent’s bullets not a free gift of nature. Close friends to him took their time to dig a shallow grave after he was buried with a small Islamic prayer. Everybody was downcast, and we were clearly looking like rejected outlaws. Just then we found a nearby tree and one of our scouts hurriedly climbed and using a binocular he could see farther away from where we were at that moment.

“Oh God” He shouted as he hurriedly climbed down from there and was panting heavily

“Seems like they are coming” He said

“Who” a soldier asked from amongst us

“The terrorists” He replied

“How many are they?” Our commandant asked him

“Probably about 10 or thereabout” he responded hurriedly. Everyone looked at one another and I guess we knew what would happen next. It was time to hide and we just have to. We realized we were short on ammo and we needed to safe guard ourselves. We quickly ran into some little bushes around and disguised ourselves and stayed very calm. They kept on passing and repeating various lines I couldn’t really understand. They came to the place we were standing a while ago and halted. They seemed to be having a little bit of argument about something, but no one knew what was happening.

One of them turned carefully and looked our direction and was kind of coming close till someone called his attention and distracted him. I was breathing heavily and I know it was the same with every other soldier right there. The argument among them increased and it was becoming hot like they were disappointed about a result. We stayed in our position without moving for a very long time. It was a scenario of life and death, and nobody wanted to die. The argument kept on till they continued their movement up the road. We allowed them move farther away and carefully came out of hour hiding place and stayed low till it was night fall.

We had to start moving at night to avoid meeting our greatest nightmares.

“beep…beep” was the sound we heard next. I was farther behind and we couldn’t understand what was going on till we heard that sound…

To Be Continued.

The explosion that rocked afterwards sent everyone to various destinations it wished. A soldier just stepped on a landmine but nobody could tell who was that. The sound of the explosion was still being echoed inside my ear drum and it was like I was getting deaf.

“Bright” “Bright” I whispered softly. I couldn’t hear any response and I paid attention. I was searching around and found the leg of a dead soldier, detached from its body “Oh no” I winced in a low voice. They were dead bodies scattered all over the whole place and I continued with my search. There was no light and I almost forgot I wasn’t with my rifle again.

“Oh shit” I cursed as I didn’t even know the one I should search first for. “Bight” I continued shouting in a low voice while looking for my rifle simultaneously. I shouted repeatedly and wasn’t getting any response and it was drawing tears from my eyes already. Some other soldiers were waking up and responding but Bright was nowhere to answer. From afar, I could hear the engine of car revving and I believed it wasn’t coming to our direction.

“Bright!!!” I shouted this time more loudly and luckily I heard a cough somewhere and went straight to that direction and behold it was Bright. I helped and stood him up fast and the engine sound was getting closer and I knew it was headed for our direction. I quickly carried Bright and some other soldiers and we made way for the bush around. We saw a perfect spot, not far from the main road where we were walking and we hid. The little bushes around matched perfectly with our khaki, making it difficult to be spotted by an enemy. I held on to Bright’s mouth as he was attempting to cough out loud. We peeped and saw how some guys whom I suspected to be terrorists came closer to some of the soldiers who were injured and took about five of them away. They shot two in the legs and dragged them on to their waiting Bikes and cars. I watched in pains and those soldiers cried and pleaded for mercy which wasn’t going to come. The terrorists kept on yelling “Allahu Alkabar” meaning “God is great” as they dragged the defenseless soldiers along.

I personally had no bullet again in my rifle, likewise most of the soldiers with us. We had probably been declared missing or dead by the Headquarters as it was a common practice. The terrorists searched around with their torchlights but we were lucky not to be seen. It wasn’t long after that, they left with their vehicles.

Commander Banji was there looking at all of us. Nobody knew what to say or do. We hid there and looked like confused prisoners. Now something caught my attention and it was Bright who was praying and thanking God for sparing his life.

“So the ones that died and the ones that were shot and abducted didn’t know about God?” I asked him in anger while interrupting his prayers

“Wicked Christians” I grumbled as I left him to do his thing. I wasn’t satisfied as I was feeling more angry towards him praying.

“God didn’t save you bright… I saved your stupid ass” I yelled in a low tone “If you want to pray a prayer of thanksgiving,I should be the one you pray to”. He was equally unmoved and continued with his meditation. I hated him so much then that I wished he was among those that were killed.

“We shall see” I murmured as I changed location and became so emotional. We had to change our route as morning came, so as to avoid an ambush from the terrorists. We were now moving through the little jungle that we saw and we stayed low as much as we could stay.

“Who is with the intercom” Commander Banji asked. That was when we remembered to do a little count to ascertain the number of soldiers left in our troop. Our communication soldier was missing and it was obvious he was either dead or has been captured alive by those demonic terrorists.

“We go find the Coms” One of the soldiers said

“Any volunteer?” Lt Banji asked. A few soldiers volunteered, while the rest of us waited behind. I wonder how they could find such equipment still intact, but I believed anything was possible. We laid flat on our bellies while we waited for them to come back either with a good or bad news. Seeing the Coms means we would be steps closer to home, but failing to see it means we might probably all die in this stupid forest. It was long as joy filled everywhere; they found the Coms still intact but with lots of blood around it. This communications guy was dead and will not be seen again.

“I told you that God is watching over us here” Bright whispered to my ears.

“Bleep you and Bleep the person you are talking about” I cussed. “You will soon testify about the same person you are insulting” He said as he gave me my space. The next mission was to find a good place of network reception and place a call to the headquarters about our location. Despite our movements, we were still getting zero signals. Times and often, we would see insurgents pass along the road with their bikes and heading towards a destination I couldn’t talk about. We were no longer interested in moving forward or backward, all we wanted now was signals.

Most of us were so weak that nobody was talking to anybody. We had to pluck some leafs and chew it raw, just to fill up our stomachs. During the morning period, we would leak the dew that fell on leafs and use it to quench thirst at least wet our tongues. I once ate a live insect that looked like a grasshopper. We couldn’t go around chasing for wild meat, when our lives were hanging on a balance. We were looking so mal-nourished, hungry and dirty. We barely spoke to each other because of the stench coming out from out mouth. We continued our quest for signals and rested when none was forth coming. We would sleep on trees and took turns to keep guard in turns. I remembered one night while I kept my turn; I started remembering everybody at home. I remembered my beloved Genea and how much I have missed her. I remembered the way mum cried about me leaving for such a mission. I remembered Bright’s mum and what she would be feeling now. I remembered Tunji’s sick mother and what have become of her son. I remembered Genea’s little brother whom I promised to come back and attend his school’s graduation party. I remembered all these and took my little time to cry. I cried not because of what I am passing through, but because people were waiting for me back home.

******

It was time to move the next day, and we set out on our way to an unknown destination. Our quest for signals continued and probably a miracle, it was like we could get something following a particular track. The track was leading nowhere else but the main road. Someone had to volunteer to go out there and make the call. “Who wants to go?” Lt Banji asked. One soldier volunteered, dropped his loaded rifle, looked around and sneaked out of the bush into the main pathway. It was a suicide mission, considering that it was a path frequented by terrorists almost all the time. It seemed to be their supply route for logistics, so they were always busy plying the route.

We watched in anticipation as he was right there where the signals were and held on to the phone tightly. He waved it around up and inputted the numbers inside. We spoke to them by using the coordinates to give out our locations. He was about putting down the phone before…

Re: Mission Sambisa!!! (all Is Fair In Love And War) by BiafraBushBoy(m): 2:52am On Jan 13, 2017
He was done and smile towards our direction and was about taking a step further before we saw how a hot bullet pierced through his chest and some amount of flesh followed suit . Some quantity of blood puffed out through his mouth. He was falling down and received another right on his belle

“No…” one of the soldiers in the squad screamed as he rushed out with his rifle and rushed towards the friend that was already fallen by a bullet probably from the terrorists.

“Don’t move” Lt Banji ordered on top of his voice. There was no way we could see a fellow comrade die without justice being delivered. We quickly ran out of the forest and with the little ammunition in our possession, we were ready to die fighting for our comrade who just sacrificed his life for us. We quickly dragged him amidst flying bullets all over the place and took positions behind some little log of fallen trees and rocks in the dense forest. The terrorists advanced towards our position with more weapons and we were always forced to retreat as they kept advancing.

“Right is good… I repeat right is good” Lt Banji yelled as some soldiers quickly took their right turn and went behind some barricades there. With some hand signs that kept indicating “Lie low”, most of us laid flat on the ground to avoid the bazookas that was being launched by the insurgents.

“On me” I shouted as I requested for cover to move front and gain foothold of our front line. Bright kept shouting “No” but I was determined to die a hero for a comrade than being seen as a coward. I knew the implications of this step but I was prepared to take it. I quickly rushed and dived behind a small rock and positioned my weapon. I could clearly see as one of the guy raised a rocket launched and was about to hit the trigger. I stood up in fury and fired towards his location and luckily he was hit in the stomach and the release went so wrong. There was a heavy explosion right in their position as he missed target while falling to the ground. I have seen lots of cowards during my short stay in the military but I have never seen anyone like Lt Banji. He was always at the rear commanding, instead of leading the front line.

One would have thought that the explosion would force the terrorists to retreat, but it wasn’t so. They actually increased in number and only a spirit being could tell from where. The sound of Ak’s rocking right there in the forest and the number of insurgents that flanked us made Lt. Banji kept shouting “Retreat”.

“Arrghh” One of the soldiers cried bitterly. I rushed to his position and one of his eyes had been blinded by a bullet. It wasn’t a good sight to behold as blood kept gushing out from that eye. He laid down there as another guy tried blocking the place the blood kept gushing out from.

“We’re moving back” LT Banji shouted. We dragged him along while running deep into the forest and it was long before another bullet pierced his belle. I had to drop him and run after the other guys. The weapons they used at us were ones I never saw during my short stay at the camp. We were just about 5 that had their magazine still loaded and Bright was among them.

“You have to do this Bro” I whispered to him. He moved some steps forward and I covered him. The way he fired his weapons, I couldn’t help but smile. He single handedly repelled some advancing terrorist with his precise shootings. “Nice one” I yelled as I tapped his back and laid low.

“You good” I smiled

“I know” he replied. I couldn’t help but smile. “Don’t flatter yourself” I said as we went back to our front line to hold position.

We finally hid behind some rocks and little trees as we spread into smaller unit but not very far from each other. We wanted to try the little trick we learnt at the camp and knew if it was going to work. I couldn’t tell the amount of soldiers that were in our squad currently because most of them had injured and some had died. We had the number but lacked the ammunition. We were clearly hungry and had not eaten for days and the consistent running was making almost everyone feel weary.

Everywhere was quite for a while but I knew that the terrorists had not gone away. They wanted to end us all right there in that forest and they were never gonna give up just like that.

“Lieutenant” I whispered. He looked at me with open eyes. “I wana advance” I spoke into my coms

“Remain still” He ordered and I held position. He ordered some other guys to move forward and cover some spaces that could grant the enemy space to cover grounds on us. It was a calculation that actually and it really helped. It wasn’t long before they swept on us like hurricane. The other guys held on tightly to position but the firepower of the terrorist were beginning to show and other soldiers with better rifle took over the front line, while the other went behind to retreat. The casualties on our side were beginning to show. About 3 soldiers were hit and one died instantly, while the other two were bleeding to death. The casualties kept on increasing and more soldiers were falling but we weren’t going to just relax and die like cowards.

“We are moving back” Lt Banji yelled again “Retreat”

We started retreating. “I don’t want to die…please help me” One of the soldiers cried. HE had been right there on his neck and he was bleeding profusely. I tried covering it with my hands but the blood pumping out was much. I carried him on my back and handed over my rifle to another soldier. More soldiers were getting injured and collapsing on the way. Despite all we tired, we were running away from battle but it was for long again.

We suddenly turned back after a while and saw that those that were pursuing us were now scattered and running in various direction.

“What happened?” I asked another guy in a local dialect “Amaro kwam”(I don’t know) He replied.

We watched as the terrorist scampered for safety and most of them kept falling as soon as they were hit with bullets. We immediately joined in the chase and gunned down as many as we could.

Waving a color symbol, we identified the shooters and behold they were soldiers from the 8th division. They finally located our whereabouts and home was calling. Most of the soldiers were already down and weak, as the rest continued with the sweeping mission. I could visibly see tears from the eyes of most soldiers as they held onto some their close friends who had dropped dead. I sat on the ground alongside some other soldiers and we kept breathing heavily.

“Arrange yourselves, home is calling” One of the senior officers of the rescue team yelled. Something was missing and I suddenly realized that I couldn’t see Bright again.

“You’ve seen Pvt Bright?” I asked one of the soldiers I saw sitting on the ground. He was visibly tired and didn’t respond much but pointed towards a specific direction. I quickly dashed off towards there and started calling around. It was long before I saw someone lying face down and holding onto his stomach. I didn’t want to believe what I was seeing and move towards him with a slow pace. I bent down slowly and turned the face of the soldier I presumed dead and behold it wasn’t Bright. The body of the soldier had been clearly battered with bullets and his face like that of a man who didn’t die well. I used my hands to cover his eyes into a close position and laid him well. “RIP” I muttered as I continued my search. I didn’t go far before I heard the groaning of someone not far from where the dead soldier was lying.

“Bright” I shouted as I ran towards his position. His belle had been split open by a bullet and he was clearly losing blood. “Someone help” I shouted while trying to draw the attention of the medical team I believed came alongside the rescue team.

“They are on their way” one of the rescue team member shouted

“Hang on bro… they are coming” I whispered and I helped cover the part that blood was gushing out from. “Am I gonna die?” Bright asked with a voice that was becoming weaker and weaker. I didn’t even know the reply to give to him

“Not at all, you are stronger than death” I encourage him. He looked at me with tears in his eyes and bent his head in tears. I didn’t want to cry along but I was already in tears within me. I helped him cover of the wound using some sand and cloth.

“We are moving in 5” The guy who was announcing kept shouting. I helped him stand up, before I realized I couldn’t move again. I felt a sharp pain deep my leg and had to let go of Bright before seating on the ground. I groaned in pain and carefully pulled up my trouser before realizing there was a major scratch on my legs. It was most likely caused by a bullet. I used a cloth I saw around and cleaned it up and forced myself to stand. We were moving in lines towards the main road where the evacuation vehicles were packed.

“Something isn’t right” I murmured to Bright, who wasn’t really interested in what I was about saying. We were being commanded like we committed an offence, instead of a welcome-like command. The way they made us move in lines and made sure we followed it was more or else, surprising to me.

“Move on” One of the soldiers from the rescue team shouted “double up” He yelled as he quickly pushed one of the soldiers in my team into the line. I couldn’t tell what was happening, but I knew that something wasn’t right. We arrived the main road where the vehicles to evacuate us was parked, and they opened the back of a big van and we were ordered to enter inside.

“This guy is injured” I tried speaking to one of the soldiers. I barely finished my words before he pushed me towards the truck direction and spoke in pidgin English “When you reach headquaters, we go treat am. Mumu soldier” (when we get to the headquaters, he will be treated) was the reply he gave to me. I tried showing a little bit of force, but before I knew what was happening, I found myself inside the back of a van with its doors locked, with little or no ventilation. We were driven through a rocky terrain because I could feel the galloping from my seat. I looked at the other soldiers and nobody spoke to each other.

“What did we do?” I tried asking one of the soldiers sitting close to me. He gave me a stern look and I quickly apologized. I face my other side and saw a soldier who was looking very sober.

“What is our crime?” I asked him. “I don’t just know” He responded like someone who was already beginning to shed tears. I kept mute and didn’t bother talking again and resorted to wallowing in my own memories of what has happened for the past few days.

I was clearly hungry as I kept felling bites from my stomach and the pain was becoming unbearable. “Who should I tell that we hadn’t eating for days?” I thought to myself “They don’t even care about us”. The sound of low cries and groaning from injured soldiers was what filled the entire bus. The bus was stuffy and jam-packed and we were clearly running out of oxygen.

“But what did we do?” was the question one of the guys kept asking himself. Nobody knew what was happening and we had to be patient till we get to the destination they were taking us to. The bus finally came to a halt and the door of the van was opened. We were ordered to come down in a single file and we were led to a waiting room. I kept looking around to know exactly what was happening but couldn’t get an idea.

“That guy is injured” I said to the lance corporal that was leading the way for us, while pointing at Bright. “Make I no knack you the head of this gun oo”(let me not hit you the base of my rifle) was the harsh reply he gave to me. “But why?” I thought to myself. I kept mute and we followed the line till we got to a room.

“All of you are welcomed, you can have your seat” was the greeting we got from a man I presumed to be the Director of Relations. We looked around for a seat but he was clearly asking us to make ourselves comfortable by sitting on the floor. We quickly sat on the floor with about 5 soldiers surrounding us with sophisticated rifles. It was long after we sat down, we were ordered to pull our various uniforms and submit to to a certain soldier who kept on collecting all of them. We were practically on just our undies without shirts on. It wasn’t long, before we heard the announcement that would change our lives for ever!
