Jay sat down on his threadbare mattress, his back against the wall. He let out a long, slow sigh. Wrapped in a white shawl, his two weeks old baby girl slept soundly on a small portion of the mattress at his feet. “Where do you think you are going in this condition, Ella?” he asked calmly
“Out of your miserable life,” Ella replied gruffly, moving towards the door..

Ella dropped her baby’s bag on the plastic stool that doubled as Jay’s reading and centre table, one arm firmly placed on her left hip, while she held her handbag with the other hand, her packed weekend box at her feet. She wore a pink blouse on a black suede skirt that did a good job of concealing her post-baby tummy. She had light make-up on and looked beautiful.

For several moments, Jay stared at Ella as she stood in front of him. Finally he got on his feet, took a deep breath, and rubbed his tear stained eyes with his palm. “Ella, we’ve been together almost one year now and I still believe in that future we both talked about when we first started.”

Ella laughed out loudly. “I don’t feel the same way,” she responded, avoiding Jay’s eyes.

“I’m a 26-yr-old youth corper with a promising future-“

“-from an extremely poor background,” She cut in.

“What of the baby? You can’t travel the rough road with a two-week- old baby -“

Ella held up a hand, her beautiful brows creased in a frown. “The baby!” she hissed, “who told you I’m going with the baby?” She opened the door in a swing, picked her travelling bag and headed down the tiny hallway of their face-me-I-face-you upstairs apartment.

Just then, the baby burst into tears, but Ella seemed beyond care as she rushed down the steps, ignoring her baby's cries. She disappeared into the busy streets without looking back. Jay rushed after her, but the baby’s cry hurt him. He quickly ran back in and grabbed her. He glanced down just in time to see Ella get in a waiting Peugeot 505 sedan. He rocked his crying baby on his shoulder, tears flowing freely down his cheeks.

“Oga corper, please calm down,” he heard one of his co-tenants, a nurse, say behind him.

“E take e easy o, e joo.” Another neighbour pleaded with him. He turned back to see his neighbours all gathered around him for the free show, all talking at the same time.

Without saying a word, he turned and shamefacedly walked back into his tiny one room apartment, the baby now sleeping on his shoulder. He pushed the door shut, and it clicked behind him. He carefully placed the baby on the bed, moved to the wooden clothes hanger and removed his NYSC crested vest and the brown khaki pants. He stood tall and lanky, with thin strong face, dominated by large tear filled eyes. He allowed the tears a free flow and sobbed until his heart threatened to fail him.

“At the count of three, say ‘mother’!” Darasimi aimed her phone camera at her parents and sibling, who leaned together on their parents’ king sized bed, and snapped the picture. “Nice smile, Tobi,” Darasimi remarked sarcastically, handing the phone to her younger brother.

“Here,” Her mother beckoned and shifted on the bed, leaving enough space for Darasimi. She snuggled up to her, one hand around her dad’s shoulder as Tobi snapped another picture.

“Happy birthday,” Otunba Jayeola pecked his wife on both cheeks while the children took turn hugging her. It was her 45th birthday. A smile of contentment spread across her beautiful face.

“Thank you,” she sat back on the bed, “you are all so wonderful.”

“We love you” They chorused

Mrs Jayeola nodded, “I’m lucky”

Dara handed her a beautifully wrapped handmade jewellery set that Bola, her roommate in school helped her make.
Otunba stood up calmly, slipped his feet into the white bathroom slippers at the foot of the bed. “If you will permit me, I’ll like to borrow my wife for a few minutes; I have something to show her outside” He playfully pulled his wife’s hands as she got out bed. “You are full of surprises,” she smiled as they all headed outside.

“Wow!” Darasimi and Tobi screamed when they saw the grey Toyota Camry ‘muscle’ parked outside. At twenty two, Darasimi had only witnessed one change of car in their family and that was five years back, when her younger brother Tobi, clocked seven. A car like that is super luxury. Mother and children turned to Otunba for an explanation.

“This is the gift our family was blessed with, yesterday,” he said

“Really? How?” His wife asked, still in shock.

“I just got a breakthrough in my construction company,” he told them with a wide grin. “A company called Pacific Investments awarded me a long-term juicy contract that I didn’t bid for!”

Mrs Jayeola eyed her husband suspiciously and shrugged her shoulders. He had sounded desperate for money lately. “E ku ori ire” she said with reservation, as she headed back inside.

Mrs Jayeola sat on the bed, arms folded across her chest, a distant look on her face. Growing up, she wanted to be a teacher. A mother of lovely children, married to a tall, dark and handsome man - of course, all girls her age dream about that. As she got into her teens and read adventure books, she envisioned being either a nurse or a defence attorney, so she could help the helpless. But situation shaped her desires, though she never became a hospital nurse, she had become a great mother and wife. A simple life, but she was satisfied. She has always avoided trouble.

Otunba entered the room and shut the door behind him. For several moments they said nothing, and then he placed his hands on her shoulder and pecked her on the cheeks. She could resist him no longer. His charm had always worked on her. She slipped her hands around him, pressed her lips to his, and kissed him deeply. Then he felt her pull away.

“Now, tell me how you got the money to buy that big car,” she whispered.

“I already told you.”

“You told me a story, now tell me the truth.”

He drew her closer, drawing a long breath. “Darling, that’s just the truth,” he said, setting his jaw. “I got a call two weeks ago from Pacific Investments. Apparently, one of their directors visited the house of a relative I built. And they offered me a deal worth millions of naira.”

“Just like that?”

“Just like that.”

She sighed. “The same all mighty Pacific Investments?”

“Yes,” Rummaging through the old briefcase lying at the foot of the bed, he brought out a brown envelope and handed it over to her. “Here is the contract letter, I didn’t rob a bank.” He said with a smile.

“Honestly, I just don’t want any politician to use your company to launder money.”

“You think I’m not scared of EFCC?” He laughed hard. “Besides, I can’t do anything that will jeopardize our children’s future.”

“Thank you, my dear.” She said, “You really deserve this breakthrough.”

Otunba Johnson Jayeola stood in a corner of his tiny office, near the window that overlooked the car park of the shopping complex that housed his office. He wore an anxious expression on his handsome face. Except for a few grey hairs that spotted his balding head, he looked younger than his forty eight years.

In his eight years of private practice in construction, he had never experienced a personal confrontation or had someone call into question his abilities. It had happened three times in the last twenty four hours, and it bothered him. Earlier in the day, the general manager of Pacific Investments had called to complain about the quality of workers he met on one of their building sites. Next, it was the accountant that called to complain about irregular signatures on his documents, now the general manager had called again to tell him the ceo of Pacific Investments wanted a hotel building under construction pulled down and re-erected. Now he understood why his lawyer friend had exploded at the idea of him signing the contract without consulting him first.

He checked his watch; half past two. He quickly packed his papers in his briefcase and called Joy-his secretary, clerk and messenger- through the open door. His office is just the size of three shops partitioned into two offices with plywood. He had used the smaller portion as his office, while the bigger portion is used as a reception.

“yes, sir” Joy, a young girl of about nineteen answered respectfully.
Despite Otunba’s stale mood, he tried not to transfer his aggression on the innocent girl. “I’m going to inspect our ring road site with barrister Yomi” He said calmly.

“OK sir,” Joy said. “but oga, the general manager of Pacific---“

“----their stress is too much joo,” he said, cutting her short. “I’m going to inspect their hotel building.”
She frowned, shifting uncomfortably on both legs. “Sir, he said the ceo of pacific investments will like to see you sir. He said you should call him to fix an appointment.”

“Really?” He winced, “I hope he is a better man than his representatives.” With that, he handed her his briefcase, locked his office door and left for the car park, Joy a few meters ahead of him.

“Hello, mum” Darasimi greeted her mother and sat on a broken plastic chair near the entrance of the foodstuff shop. She dropped her bag and books at her feet. “How is business?”

“We thank God.” Her mother said with a bright smile. Otunba had helped stock her food stuff shop with a few bags of rice and beans and other food stuff.

Darasimi slipped into a pair of bathroom slippers and pushed her brown sandal under the desk that housed the cash drawer. “I applied for a scholarship today”

“Really?”

“Yes,” She shifted in her seat, trying to find a comfortable position. “I’m throwing this chair away today!”

“I want two kongos of rice,” A customer called out to them.
Darasimi quickly attended to her, while her mother attended to a small boy that needed gari. Business was indeed getting better since she ploughed in more capital. ‘’God bless otunba,” she said under her breadth.

“So, who was the boy that dropped you at the bus stop?” Mrs Jayeola asked as soon as the customers left.

“Mum! You saw me at the bus stop from here?” She knew her mother saw her- she never missed anything that concerned her children and husband.

“I always do,” she smiled, “I always look towards the bus stop when it’s time for you to come.”

“We don’t need a surveillance camera with you around” She said with a broad smile, “And yes, a boy dropped me off at the bus stop, a post graduate student in my department.” She said shyly.
She moved towards her daughter and held her shoulders, “Just between you and me, Darasimi, that doesn’t sound bad. At twenty two, you are old enough to have a boyfriend. You should introduce your boyfriend to me and date openly. I don’t want you to have a child out of wedlock.”

“You always say that, mum”

“I always do, and I mean it. Never bring a child to this world if you won’t raise it.”

“I will keep that at the back of my mind ma.” She assured her mother. “That reminds mema, a multinational company is giving three students scholarship in my department, and my HOD thinks I’ll be one of the three.”

“Yes, you were saying something about scholarship earlier”

“Beeni, mummy, my HOD personally chose me as one of the benefactors,” she smiled broadly, “Even up to postgraduate level”
Mrs Jayeola took a step back, her eyes rolled involuntarily. “Wow!”

“Yes o.”

“They should have brought the scholarship when we could barely pay your fees jor.” She said, and feigned a frown.

“I’ve paid for my 300L now, but according to the HOD, if I’m selected, they’ll continue from there.”

“Halleluyah! You will be selected by God’s grace”

“Amen!”
