Easy. There are 300 Spartans, there are 7000-ish Unsullied; they meet in open battlefield... do the math. wink

If we want to be fair though and make it an equal balanced encounter, 300 Spartans vs 300 Unsullied on an open field, i believe both armies will annihilate each other... however, the last man standing would be a Spartan. Now who wants to know why i think so?

I beg to disagree.

Both the Spartans and the Unsullied receive gruesome training right from infancy. Both of them are also armed similarly (spear and shield), and they both fight in phalanx formations. So technically/skill-wise, they are equal; so the difference lies their stamina and endurance (as in, who gets tired first?), and the best way to gauge this is by comparing their battles. Now let's do some research...

In the Battle for the Free City of Qohor (the one you referred to), the Unsullied force of 3,000 withstood a Dothraki horde of 20,000; after EIGHTEEN cavalry charges, 2,400 Unsullied and over 12,000 Dothraki lay dead. The Dothraki withdrew and cut off their locks as they rode by as a sign of defeat. Compare this to the Battle of Thermopylae (the real story of the 300), were a Lacedaemonian army numbering about 7,000 (300 Spartans plus others, led by King Leonidas of Sparta) fought a Persian army numbering over 150,000 over the course of THREE DAYS to a stand-still. Between day1 and day2, the Spartans lost less than 500 men, while the Persians lost OVER 20,000. Then on day3, the Lacedaemonians were betrayed and their flanks exposed; about 5,000 retreated, while the main force of 300 Spartans and roughly 1,100 others remained and fought to the death.

Now consider this: the Unsullied had the city wall protecting the backs, so they could not be exposed, and the Dothraki also refused to attack from the flanks. And yet 2,400 Unsullied were slain. In the same situation, the Spartans lost LESS THAN 500. Granted, the Unsullied were fighting mounted cavalry (i.e. men on horses), while the Spartans fought mostly infantry (soldiers on foot), yet its a testament to their endurance that the Spartans lasted 2 whole days with very minimal loses. It was only after a saboteur called Ephialtes led the Persians through a hidden pass and attacked from behind that the Spartans lost the fight.

My conclusion is the Spartans have more endurance than the Unsullied. Both armies will probably be equal in strength and skill, so if the battle goes quickly, it may be a tie. But if it is extended for long, the Spartans will win.

The Viper easily floored the Mountain so I don't think the Kingslayer would be a match for him

Did we ever really see pre-swordhand-loss Jaime fight in the show? His brief tussle with Ned Stark isn't really a good yardstick to judge him by, cos so far the evidence indicates that Oberyn will poke him full of holes, swordhand or no. But going by his reputation in the books, the youngest member of the Kingsguard ever, born to wield a sword, mmmm... i think he'd beat the Viper.

Bronn would beat the Mountain; Daario would beat the Mountain; Jon Snow would beat the Mountain; even the Hound would beat him. Gregor Clegane wielded his sword like a cutlass; he was sheer strength and power and very little skill. Oberyn could have ended that fight any time he chose, but instead he got cocky and mouthy.

However if you are talking of Sir Robert Strong aka Zombie Clegane... i don't know if anybody can beat that one. cheesy

I think if you're going to fight the mountain you don't want to use swords at all.

Oberyn fights from a distance. If anybody manages to close the gap, he'd be at a disadvantage.

I get amused when people underestimate Jon Snow...

Battle of Castle Black, Snow vs. Thenn; that's for skill. Battle of Hardhome, Snow vs. Whitewalker; that's for speed. Bast@rds Bowl, Snow survives cavalry charge, survives the battle, survives stampede, runs on foot all the way to the castle gates, and finishes the fight inside Winterfell; that's for endurance. Jon wields Longclaw, a bast@rd sword which another half-foot longer than the usual longsword, and still light enough to swing with one hand. Am i still making you laff?

Yes.
Surviving a Calvary charge is down to luck more than anything else (plus that was a stupid move)
The thenn had snow dead to right if not for that hammer lying nearby.
Samwise killed a whitewalker, what you need Is the right tool.
Jon snow by his very own admission says he isn't as good as his step brother,Robb who isn't even cofident in his own ability to fight the kingslayer.
We can't put Jon in the elite just yet.

The cavalry charge was a stupid move, of course. But surviving it took more than luck.
The Thenn had him pinned, yes. Still the fight stands as evidence of Jon's skill with the blade.
For the WW, my reference is to his speed evading the ice blade and the repost with Longclaw. So no, you need more than just the right tool.

I will grant Jon may not be in the "elite" Arthur Dayne category yet, but you don't need to be there to beat the Mountain. Oberyn Martell was certainly not there.

Jamie would kill the viper easily. From the books point of view.

He would also kill the moumtain.

Yeah. He talked too much and lost his focus but the Viper has a really good reputation and I feel the Kingslayer couldn't beat him even if he tried

He survived those arrows because of plot armour, nothing more.
He was owned by the thenn, that isn't a confirmation of skill with the sword.
I also don't see any reason why any other capable fighter won't defeat the white walker once you've the tools to do so.
Oberyn, bronn and the cleagane brothers are renowned fighters, jon is still below this guys.

Right now,John snow Martial skill is overestimated by the people in the show and the book becaused he killed the half-hand,but we know that was no real fight only a ruse.
Snow can't kill the mountain jare.
Maybe Jamie could, but I think the weapons used will factor in how that fight will go down.

I won't judge based on movies but i would rather go for written accounts, both spartans and unsullied were bred and primed for battle and war and were most effective in fighting as a unit, i will favour a spartan victory because their spears were longer (real phalanx spears) and shields were broader and made of complete Metal (brass)

We all know the Halfhand fight was a ruse. And you are right that Snow's skill is overrated by people in both show and books (Ramsay's words before the Bast@rd Bowl, something along the lines of Jon now the best swordsman alive...). I will admit, the best fighters still alive in the GoT universe look something like this: Robert Strong > Bronn > Daario > the Hound > Tormund > Brienne...

But imagine this: Jon and Sansa somehow run into Zombie Clagane, and Zombie Clagane punches Sansa's face in; Jon loses it, whips out his sword and Longclaw starts singing. Who do think wins that fight? Maybe I'm just sentimental but I think Jon Snow will win that fight, most likely by act of god.

The phalanx formation of the helenic city states when co-opted to his macedonian calvary was what gave alexander of macedon such a great empire in such a short period even with such a small army! As simply put, everywhere he went, the old world and their armies weren't prepared for being pressed down at stake ends with countless numbers of long pointed spikes, see the battle of winterfell, when the bolton army finally shoehorsed jon snows with broad shields and pikes leaving even wun wun helpless and understand the helplessness of old world armies
