Females hating sci-fi Wherever did you get that impression from? I live for anything sci-fi. movies, books, documentaries...pls count me in. My best birthday gift till date given to me 10 years ago remains a book on Aliens. It is still in my library Do you know that the moon is hollow and that when a meteor hits it, it rings like a bell. it was much closer to earth during the time the pyramids were built ....and so forth. If you want to make me happy, a good sci do movie or novel will do.

Read Abducted by Robin Cook and you will never remain the same. Also watch Ex-Machina

Seen Ex-machina, loved it, absolutely loved the ending.
I would recommend you read, 'The girl with all the gifts' by M.R Carey, I wasn't able to put it down.

Sci-fi books are really interesting but not easy to come by. Some books tend to have some science fiction in them but I don't think I have come across one that is wholly sci -fi.

I noticed this trend first on NL, then now on other numerous Whatsapp groups and online bookclubs.

Normally, I shrug this off. The average Nigerian doesn't give a damn about stories and prefer watching crappy love stories or reading celebrity nonsense and what not.

However, whenever I have the extraordinary luck to connect or view stories by true fans of literature; I notice most of them shy away from Sci-Fi.
Indeed a very rare minority show intrest in sci-fi or write stories about it (Nairaland as a case study).

Why?? What could be the cause of this

On a related note, I'm yet to see a female fan of Sci-fi on NL or anywhere else.

Too boring and it doesn't exist

False
They create basis for wider imaginations and advancement, many of those things are already being experimented and researches still going on.

It is all about future imaginations and meant for advanced thinkers, but some can't comprehend and find it boring.

For example, some centuries ago, our present world would have sounded crazy, unreal and boring if ever described in writing.

If I am to be a writer, one of the genres i'll write is science fiction. In fact I love all forms of speculative fictions- (horror and fiction).
But you need go authors. Michael Crichton wrote a science fiction novel based on cloning. Can't remember the name but the novel was good. But one has to understand that there are different levels of sci fi. Some are mild and some are hard core. It depends a lot on the writers.

That'll be Jurassic Park

Simply put, most people especially Africans lack imagination. They forgot that there's only only one, which is "Thought are Things".

Every current ideas, thoughts and imaginations will become future things and services, the whites understand that, that's why they stimulate their children imaginations with toys, books and tv documentary and shows that plants idea seed early in life.

When i read people say it's boring, i laugh. The current level of civilization is built on countless cycles of fantasy, moral and scifi ideas from many centuries ago. Well, i may excuse our level of imagination based on our current socio-economic conditions; but the whites also went through this path but it never drown their imaginations and optimism, so we have no excuse.

For the interested in more scifi books read "The Expanse"set of books, starting with "Leviation Wakes", it is a hard scifi.

The major reason why Nigerians are not interest in science fiction is because of the abstractness of science in this environment. i.e. science is hardly felt. Science in Nigeria is only limited to books. Most of us that were good in physics then cannot even fix simple electrical appliances. I remember those days my parents and siblings would become so disappointed in me because of my inability to fix electrical appliances even though I make A1 in physics and mathematics. The reason for this abstractness is lack of scientific equipments in secondary schools and universities.
Re: Why Do People Dislike Reading Science Fiction? by Blakjewelry(m): 9:34am On Feb 26, 2017
I think it has to do with the Nigerian altitude toward science in general. Nigeria is tilted toward the cultural and religious way of life, secondly I think we are so mentally lazy that we are quick to attribute everything to a Divine act instead of looking at the scientific and practical side of things.

writing sci-fi requires deep knowledge of how things work in the ream of science as some work are term bad Sci-fi because they will not hold even in the weirdest of Scientific theory.

Also writers of Science fiction has to have a broad mind as you will be exploring an area nobody has explored before.
Speaking of which, does anyone have the sci-fi e-book version mission earth?

One of my best ever novel is a sci-fi triology by Julian May called the Pliocene epoch. I'm still looking for an e-book version of it.

And, they are about 5-6 books actually.

One Nigerian Sci-fi I enjoyed reading was The Fist 2.0 on the naked Convos. The writer was fantastic. And it was more interesting because everything was based in Nigeria.

So if it's based locally,I would gladly read a Sci-fi story. NL writers I know who can totally pull that off are Royver and Frank316.

I think Royver has done something like that on NL.

Isn't that why it's called "fiction" undecided

Besides, Sci-fi is not as far away from reality as you wish. There are many inventions that have been predicted from sci-fi novels.

The internet of today was predicted by Neuromancer for example.

I love sci-fi novels and I'll continue loving it.

But then, I only love sci-fi stories from foreign authors cause I know that's their reality out there.

What does an average Nigerian know about robots, flying cars and space exploration that would culminate into a beautiful sci-fi novel that would keep you on your toes, without you getting bored to death?

Here in Naija, we are still living in a semi-rural society that is still striving to push its luck on areas of science and technology... And someone would describing flying cars, skyscrapers, space exploration and vice versa in a Nigerian setting?

Haba... We should be able to differentiate between science fiction and a lie na grin.

If you want sci-fi business to thrive in Nigeria, start with the basics, don't skip timelines. The novel should be more 'chemical and biological' in nature instead of full-fledged techy.

Every novel mirrors a society. Let's take our time.
The war of the worlds was written in the 1800's; when england was very much like Nigeria in terms of intellectual disparity and general enlightment.

Yet the novel was a bestseller and predicted war machines that eventually came to fruition.

Our society no be hindrace jare >smiley
