Those roads don't look sub standard, though i can't compare it with roads built by Akpabio.

I wish Enugu had the kind of money at Akwa Ibom's disposal. I can imagine the huge impact it would make. Akwa Ibom has succeeded in putting in place the basic infrastructure in place. What is left, is to empower the people who will i turn build a model city for the state.
While a minister in serving under the current administration in the federal level once talked about producing pencil in the year 2018,he never knew that few months back, Akwa Ibom state government began the production of pencil, toothpick, etc under AKEES.

There are lots of good roads in Akwa ibom state already, thanks to the last administration.

Akwa ibom state needs investors, have seen other state government going abroad to woo investors, what has he done to such possible in Akwa ibom state?

To me, this administration is not working.

I believe the first step to woo investors is to make infrastructure available. Infrastructure, security of lives and property is key ingredient for an investment friendly environment. With infrastructure and security, investors will come with minimal campaign. Akwa Ibom has vast arable land, minerals, oil & gas. Their Gas reserves is also well developed. They are host and hence first beneficiary from the presence of 7E's gas processing facilities in Eket where gas is produced for local use - power generation and industrial use. Gas pipelines already traverse the state and ready for hook up for any type of industrial use. Their future is very bright and the people are very receptive to development. Very peaceful and united people.

By now, our leaders should be thinking of travelling outside to woo investors...probably go to Japan and discuss with multinational companies who do business with Nigeria as well as other African countries to bring their business here as it would benefit them owing to the fact that Nigeria possesses a large market. These multinationals will be given friendly tax however skilled labour will be provided by both the foreigners as well as the locals but the semi skilled and unskill will be the locals totally. In Norway, they use refuse dump to generate power supply. They've been doing this that it got to a time they needed to import waste from other countries. I would expect our leaders to go out there and find out how this was achieved and replicate, instead they give out wheelbarrows. God will help us

By far the one of the richest state in terms of allocation. Wish Bayelsa and Delta state were able to utilize their allocation like this.

What pricks me is that we have the funds to do roads better than this; say an 8 lane road but our leaders give us thrash and we celebrate. The funds are there so also is the manpower but they offer us little or nothing. Why can't our leaders encourage people with creative ideas to bring their ideas to them and they help to transform such an idea into reality. Yesterday, a thread about iron benders on Aba was on the front page. That can be a billion naira industry if duly exploited thereby creating jobs for the people of Aba. Instead they'll send one useless task force to harass these folks who are trying to make an honest living and collect the little they make

Then he should make noise about it.

Okay bro I respect your view, but you must also realized that the last administration of Akpabio [Although I respect him a lot for opening up the state with massive road construction] did not touch places like the Oron axis and most riverine areas. This Udom is doing, I for example am interested in going into commercial fishing in Oron...but need the infrastructures put in place to enable me move in.

Infrastructure, infrastructure, do we really need to have all the whole infrastructure on ground before investors start coming?

Honestly, i don't slow rate at which Akwa ibom state is moving, for a state with such allocation and 13% derivation fund and internal revenue generated, it is poor.

Syringe Factory

My problem with Nigerian governments. Governments should not construct factories, that is not their responsibility.

Another issue with roads constructed in Akwa Ibom is that 95% have no pedestrian tracks/walkways.

Billyonaire:
This Particular governor is a disappointment to me, because as a former ED of a bank, I had expected 'miracles' from day one. Now these roads look sub-standard compared to what Akpabio built in that State. AKS receives the highest Allocation from FG and yet, I had expected to see magic. But the governor is just confused at the moment. I am interested in getting assets there, the last time I visited, I went to buy a house at Shelter Afrique, and I realized that Lekki Houses are cheaper and more beautiful. The cost of of assets there are just nonsensically exhorbitant because the local politicians there just steal money and buy assets at unrealistic prices. The only business they know is fuel station dotting every angle. A house I would have bought for 80 million in Lekki cost up to 120m at Shelter Afrique, that was an absolute turn off.

If things improve there, count me in, I will step and get a few hectars. You must make your land cheap for investors to come in. Ogun State and Ondo State lands are cheaper. Nature is not creating new land, we need to put our names on the sands of time, where ever the citizens make it business friendly.

You really visited. From the airport to Plaza junction, I counted circa 70 petrol stations, both dispensing and non-dispensing. It also of worth of note that she has the worst electricity supply in the South-South region.

Ditto me, and to even think he did a program at INSEAD and worked at PwC. shocked

On the contrary, lands are cheap in Akwa Ibom (cheaper than Rivers with less hassle from "matching grounders" ) depending on the purpose and location.

I totally agree with you on the land stuff, it is unreasonably expensive, that I found out early this year. However, I think most of the road Udom is embarking on are smaller roads to the hinterland and he is using 50% local contractors reason such roads should not be compared to the major roads in and around Uyo that connect the other local government constructed by Julius Berger and the Chinese construction company

My thoughts exactly! Don't be deceived by these pictures... All residents in Akwa ibom know that Udom has vastly under performed compared to his predecessor Akpabio who made Akwa Ibom so great that everyone in Nigeria knew something great was happening in the state. Udom has not even been able to maintain the street lighting contracts on all the major roads in Uyo as often times now street lights work only when there is light and if peradventure the bubls are still functional from Pre udom era. Even common tropicana and ikot ekpene road shamefully still remain uncompleted projects with all the allocation the state is receiving! Till today he has not even completed the portion of the road to Aba from Ikot Ekpene yet he is playing to the gallery claiming this and that. Two years down the road, no factory has started working in Akwa Ibom etc etc

I am not saying Udom has not done some projects but truth be told under his administration, Akwa Ibom has retrogressed from one of the fastest developing states in the country to one of the mediocre oil producing states just like Delta state with all the allocation to it

Akpabio after 2 years in office was not seen working or doing anything, he was only recognized at the end of his first term in office...we will take major stock by May, 2019

Those people criticzing Udom should consider the fact that the federal allocation the state received has dwindled for some time now, u can't compare the budget of previous government with the current government.

From what I see in ground, i'll give him a pass mark. Atleast he still invests in infrastructure upgrade which stimulates growth compared with other government that does nothing ever since assuming office

Funds are not meant for road construction alone, you build what can bring investors in by not neglecting other things. Then investors start to move in which will in place increase the state revenue through taxation...then comes your 8 lanes. Even developed world keep rebuilding their roads

One thing I noticed about Udom is Dat he isn't a thorough politician or not even a politician cos if it were to be during akpabio's era, the little he's achieved would have bin so magnified by the media that ull be forced to believe he's working, I guess he's affraid of spending so much on media and that's his downside.
U won't believe that I had to travelled from uyo to my home town eket few weeks ago to attend my cousins wedding, there I realized and was surprised at d number of roads he's is currently doing. I was shocked, especially seeing eket ibeno Road totally completed. Make him come pay me, I go help am broadcast am. I no need much mulla. Lol

Then what is he doing with all the money ? These are low cost direct labour project if what you are saying is true. It therefore means that he is yet to execute real project. So what is he doing with all the allocations ? So painful that I have no interest in politics for now. With just 5 billion dollars, I can transform any State to Singapore through direct labour. No foreign company just my citizens trained to build 21st century structures and well paid. That is the true meaning of developing a state and hiring the people. What does it take to employ and train 6 million people to work on their own roads and get paid .monthly ? That is what civil service should be all about. I need to set up schools for leadership training. So much idiocy everywhere.

[quote author=Turaki4Presiden post=56949216]
No investors or factory will move into any state without adequate infrastructures, especially roads to enable them evacuate and move their products, materials and personnel with ease.

Although, Udom can start attracting investors to the area with already good infrastructures , the Ibom tropicana comes to mind...he should ensure that place is finished without delay and modelled into places like Disney world in Florida, Sea and movie world here in Australia. That alone can generate huge income for the state with multiplier effect on hotels etc[/quote

I totally agree with the poster you responded to after a long and hard thought. There comes a point when infrastructure investment should start to yield returns. This is ten years after Akwa Ibom started its developmental revolution. Now it the time to consolidate it. Infrastructure without returns has a widely known name. It is called 'white elephant'. As roads and bridges expand so is the requirement for operation and maintenance. Roads have to be cleaned, drains pigged, solar batteries replaced, so as street and traffic lights, buildings repaired and maintained you get up to a point (like Lagos did) 20 years ago when the entire budget could not maintain existing infrastructure and new ones were completely out of reach. What creates a development balance and sustains progress is an internal economy, taxes and levies to be specific.

That was the promise Udom came in with if memory serves me right. To lay more emphasis on developing human capital. He should be more pro active in attracting both domestic and foreign investors. I suggest he creates a government department specifically for investment and industrialisation with a thicker budget than that for works, housing or water resources and first rate consultants. Then with the budget he can provide incentives to jump start key industries. I donot subscribe to the leisure sector as investment. Leisure becomes necessary when work is overwhelmimg else he ends up with another Tinapa. Industrialize first and the hotels and resorts will follow naturally. Akwa Ibom must start to develop its own economy to insulate it from the vagrancies of the turbulent oil regime. Slow down a bit on the roads and start to find the tax nairas that will maintain them or else...
