I may just stop the story and start another when I'm less busy as I can see people are no longer reading this. No point posting updates people won't read.

You should stop the story and don't write another
People were reading your story regularly until you started delaying in updating it.
Failure to quickly update,at least 1 episode a day makes people lack interest
Re: Almost Paradise by Nobody: 5:28pm On Jun 23, 2017
Dont stop. Just that the update is too slow and makes one too loose interest i know is not easy due to busy schedule but improve in update. Nice story.

Candy, ur Style of writing is soo captivating and you do so well. forgive me for always being a ghost reader but I've always followed your stories from the days of "the web". I understand that you have a life asides nairaland but you should still make out time to update regularly, the suspense inbetween each update is too long that I have to reread the previous update before I understand the later.
you started "unholy matrimony " and it hasn't been completed till date, now you want to leave this one too and start another one?? that to me is not cool. just have it in mind that the strength of the commenters lies in the continuity of your updates with less suspense. #MyTwoCentstho

Chapter 29

Dr Deji took pride in his extensive collection of designer shirts and shoes, a taste he developed in his years as a resident doctor. He had been impressed by the sharp, clean appearance of one of his mentors who also had a Nigerian origin. For him, every memorable man created his own image.

Today, he chose the plainest, the cheapest blue t-shirt on a pair of faded blue jeans. He drove through the city in deep thoughts. For the most part of his drive through town to Liz’s place, he filled his thoughts with Liz and her likely reaction to what he was going to tell her that morning. A part of him felt she was going to be angry, a part felt she was going to tell him to go to hell. But he was sure of one thing; he loved her and he was not willing to give her up this time without a fight.

He checked the clock on his dashboard as he pulled up on the busy street of mama’s house at Oke Ado. The time was 8:53am. The street was a beehive of activities, most of the houses had small units of shops erected as part of the buildings, while some shops were constructed with metal containers. He watched mama display the foodstuff on a medium size wooden table in front of the house as he got out of the car.

“E kaaro ma.” Deji greeted mama with respect.

“Baw o ni oko mi?” Mama asked with a big smile. “Thanks for everything, God will bless you.”

“Amin, E se ma.” Deji said. “You should have allowed Liz to help you with this.”

“Is it not you doctors that said we should exercise our limbs regularly?” mama asked teasingly. “Besides, Liz is getting Tobi ready for his new school.”

The news caught Deji by surprise and for a brief moment, it dampened his spirit. He had rehearsed every word he was going to say to her, he hadn’t prepared for any delay. Besides, she had not mentioned anything about changing his school or taking Tobi to school so soon. He headed down the dimly lit hallway of the building, exchanging pleasantries with a couple who lived opposite mama’s bedroom. He knocked on mama’s door and Tobi opened the door for him, looking smart in his new blue and white uniform.

“Good morning sir.” Tobi prostrated before him, beaming with smiles.

“How are you, my boy?” He patted him on his back fondly.

“Good morning o.” Liz said as she walked inside the living room, still buttoning her shirt. “You are early. Have your seat.”

“Good morning dear. I hope I didn’t pull you away from what you were doing,” He said as he took the seat she offered.

“Nah...I was just about stepping outside when you knocked.”

“Just a thought dear; isn’t it too early for Tobi to go back to school?”
Liz smiled reassuringly, “It’s not too early. He really wants it and he has already lost two weeks of school. I think it’ll help him get over this faster.”

“Let’s go together then,” he offered. “I really need to talk to you this morning.”
Liz shrugged her shoulders. “That’s okay. Thanks.”

Tobi picked his bags and they all filed out of the house, anxiety written on their faces. Mama waved them goodbye and watched them drive off into the busy streets.

A couple of hours later, they sat across from each other in Domino’s Pizza. There were four other couples there, but it could as well have been them alone. The silence that followed his confession was deafening. Tears streamed down her face and she wiped it with a tissue paper.

“Why are you telling me this, Deji?” She finally asked. “You should have spared me the agony of knowing that you were paid to come back into my life, that you took money to send me to jail, that you...”

“Please stop.” Deji walked to her side and held her to himself, her body shaking violently with tears. “I had to come clean because I love you so much. I could never hurt you, and that has made Madam Ella very upset.” He brought out a slip of paper and placed it on the table, “This is a deposit teller for 3.5million naira. I have returned the cash she gave me.”

“What of the trip to Canada? Have you returned the money she spent?” She asked, pushing him away from her. She stood up and picked her bag, “Deji, we are two adults in our 40s, we don’t have time to play games. I’m still married to my husband and I’m going to concentrate on making my son a better man.”

Dr Deji opened his mouth as he watched her storm out of the pizzeria. At the back of his mind, he enjoyed a kind of peace that had eluded him since they reunited on the false platform. For the first time, he felt free after telling her the truth and the way he felt about her. He got up after her, leaving the small sized cone of Coldstone ice cream untouched on the table.

Chapter 30

The City hummed and bustled, people went about their businesses in the bright new day. Yet to Darasimi, the morning seemed empty, as hollow as the chambers of a cold, dead heart. Sighing deeply, she slumped deeper in the passenger seat of the Honda city.
High-rise buildings receded up the slopes that flanked the Iwo road highway, occasionally giving way to accommodate a few brown roofs, scattered among the newer buildings. As the Honda made its way through the ever busy Iwo road, the buildings and other vehicles on the road seemed to float past as if they were only dream images without real substance. The emptiness Darasimi perceived was internal, not external.

The city bustled, bubbly as ever, with chaos of creation, her own soul was the only hollow thing. She glanced at Sola, driving with all concentration; he was leaning forward, hunched slightly over the steering wheel, casting occasional glances with an expression Darasimi could easily read. They’ve been friends for over twelve years. His thoughts like hers were no doubt on the baby.

Squinting through the windshield, she sighed heavily as he drove in and out of pot holes. The road was worse than she remembered. Breaking the silence that enveloped the car since they left Lagos, she tapped his shoulder and said, “Thank you for doing this for me, Sola.”
He smiled and shrugged his shoulders, “It’s always a pleasure being with you, regardless of the situation.”

Even though their friendship spanned over twelve years, and the fact that he had professed his love for her since she turned eighteen, he has remained friend zoned, her go-to-guy. A handsome and comfortable guy from a decent family would have been most girls’ dream, but for Darasimi, he was too close to her, more like a brother.

She was very close to term and she was very worried that she was having the baby without the support of her family. She was still boiling with anger at the shocking discovery that Mrs Williams, the woman her mother introduced to her as her best friend and the wife of her husband’s son had planned to sell her baby to a wealthy family. She checked her phone messages again and sighed. “She actually collected 2.5million on this baby!”

“That’s to show you how desperate people can be.” Sola told her as he connected the road that led to the house she shared with Tolu. “Why don’t you want to go to Mrs Ell...sorry, your mum’s doctor? You need an elderly woman...”

“Stop it, Sola.” She said with a frown. Sitting down had suddenly become so uncomfortable. “I already told you my mum and grandma encouraged me to give this baby up for adoption! Besides, Tolu is there to help.” She managed to say, the pains on her legs and waist was becoming unbearable.

“What’s wrong?” Sola asked, fear written all over his handsome face. He had warned her against taking the trip to Ibadan but she had remained adamant.

“What’s wrong?” She asked, her fury growing irrationally, as if he was somehow responsible for her pains, as if he was only pretending to be unaware of her pains. “I’ll tell you what’s wrong. I’m having the baby in your car if you don’t drive fast!” She screamed.
Looking worried and confused, Sola brought out his phone and scrolled to Tolu’s name. The phone rang endlessly, then she finally picked on the third dial. “Which hospital do I take Dara to? We can’t make it to your place again...”

She snatched the phone from him. “Meet me at Blue Cross Hospital now!” She screamed angrily into it.

“Isn’t that your family hospital? What if someone tells Your mo..Mrs Jayeola?” Sola asked.

The look she gave him was so cold, it could freeze a boiling cup of water. “Just drive!!!”

Later that morning, back in her own house, Liz unpacked her bag , changed into a simple top and skirt and sat down on the bed she once shared with Otunba. She allowed the events of the past two days to flow back in her thought, finally settling on her discussion with Dr Deji. Tears cascaded down her ageing face once more and she wiped it with the back of her hands. She could literally feel her blood pressure shoot up. “Just when I started liking him again!” She said aloud.

She could feel the cool breeze from outside and she saw the blinds clattered against the window glass. Her Tecno phone vibrated beside her on the bed, bringing her back to the moment. She picked the phone and looked at the unfamiliar number calling. Somehow, she wished it was Deji calling. Ever since they parted ways at Ring road, she had resisted the temptation to call him back and tell him he’s forgiven.

“Hello.” She said.

“Congrats ma! This is Matron Adeola calling from Blue Cross. Darasimi just had a baby girl!” The caller said excitedly.

“Really?” She asked, unsure of how to take the news. Darasimi had been unfair to her, ignored her calls and even ignored her in Lagos.

“Yes ma.” The matron responded, the excitement wearing thin on her end also.

“Thank you matron, I’ll be there soon.” She said and dropped the phone in her laps. She sat rooted to the spot for a few minutes, confused.

Several thoughts ran riots in her mind, most importantly, she was scared of meeting Ella and her mother at the hospital, she was tired of fighting for Darasimi’s love. Tears welled up in her eyes again and she allowed the water to flow freely.

Suddenly, Liz sprang from the bed, her phone slipped and fell on the floor from her laps in the process but she ignored it. She grabbed the small bag she just unpacked, picked her handbag and headed for the door. As she placed her hand on the door knob, her phone vibrated from one corner on the floor. She rushed back and picked it. “Deji, please meet me at Blue Cross Hospital, my daughter just had a baby girl!” She said excitedly. She could have hugged and kissed him if he had shown up at her doorstep that moment.

Outside, she got on the first okada that agreed to go to Blue Cross Hospital, even though he over charged her. She got down just before the hospital and bought some fruits, pampers and a few items she felt the baby might need. She half walked, half ran down the hospital gate but stopped just before she entered the reception area. She brought out her phone and called Deji.

“Please, I will wait for you at the Hospital gate, I’m too scared to go in alone.” She whispered into the phone as soon as he picked her call.

I will like to say something about Deji and Darasimi at this juncture.
DEJI: deji is such a man which 80% of nigerian men would did exactly what he carried out if they were to be in his shoe.he shouldnt be neglect at this juncture rather be embrace by liz to make a better and stronger armor to fight ella.i will like it if liz can forgive him and accept him as a friend in friend-zone for now.
DARASIMI:i think this lad is about to be understanding the evil of her biological mother and the importance of the teaching of the mother who nurse her.
A big thanks to candy once more for the story.more updates pls to sheld light on the saga.

Ella and Mrs Yemi Williams sat alone on the paved way just outside the double doors that led to the freshly manicured garden of Ella’s Elebu mansion. The lush green of the lawn was very refreshing, brightened by the rays of the mid day sun.

“Mrs Chukwu, the woman that wanted to adopt Darasimi’s baby just called me an hour ago.” Mrs Yemi Williams broke the silence.

“Really? Why? Are they not adopting again?” Ella asked disinterestedly. She had more important things to discuss with her friend. “If they are not adopting, there are others in your fertility clinic who will.”

“That’s the problem. Apparently, she ran away early this morning.”

A shocked Ella sat straight in her chair. “Really? To where?”

“She couldn’t be too sure. But her gatekeeper told her a man came to pick her in a Honda city car. She left all her stuff at their house.”

“Wo o, ore, Darasimi is my daughter and she’s an adult. I’m sure she can’t keep the baby. She’ll soon turn up at my doorstep. Watch. Then I can give up the baby to an orphanage.”

Mrs Williams shifted in her seat uncomfortably. She had received full payment for the baby without disclosing that fact to Ella. Worse still, she had bought a Camry for her new boyfriend with the money. “I really can’t afford to disappoint the Chukwus. We have to find her and hand the baby to th...”

“I can decide to keep the baby, Yemi. Simply tell the Chukwus to look for another baby to adopt.” She said with a rising bile.

“Em...em...that’s ok.”

“By the way, you had Liz’s boy in your custody for two weeks, yet you let him come back home in peace!” Ella said in a rage. “Let’s assume you didn’t know him, what of yesterday, when Liz spent hours with you? Why didn’t you tell me the moment you knew she was the same person I've been trying to get?” Her control snapped, no thought, only fury.

“No, don’t you dare blame me, Ella! I only suspected she was your 'Liz' when I saw your daughter's picture on her phone. You were not even sure it was Liz you were out to get! What if your assumption is wrong and she’s not the one we are looking for? We just get rid of an innocent woman?”

Ella relaxed, her frayed nerves calmed. She pulled her chair closer to her friend and placed a hand on her shoulder. “Jay made it easier for me to identify her. I had my suspicions from the story the lawyer told me...”

“You got the lawyer to talk? You are the boss!” Mrs Yemi Williams said excitedly. After using everything, including sex appeal to lure the lawyer to her side without any luck, she was impressed at her friend’s success where she failed.

“Jay finally put a nail on it for me when he told me about her background. It was easy. Now, all we have to do is get her out of the way before the lawyer finds her.” Liz assured her.

At first, Mrs Yemi Williams was sad at Liz’s fate, but money was a strong motivating factor for her. Finally, she got on her feet and said, “She doesn’t really need to die, does she?”

“She has to.” Ella answered, unfettered.

“What if we just get guys to scare her away? Or get her to sign her portion over...”

“I understand why you are trying to help her.” Ella cut her short, “But you can’t be too sentimental now.”

“I know. But I can’t be a party to an innocent woman’s death, least of all Liz! Besides, I hope you are not just doing this to get back at her because of Jay.”

"I've punished her enough for taking Jay away. Now, I'm all out for my husband's wealth bequeathed to the b*stard. Besides, Jay is wrapped round my fingers."

"Hmm..."

“You can do a lot with the rent or proceeds from the sale of three duplexes at Ajah, extra cars and cash...think about it. If she simply signs it over, she can come back to reclaim it all.”

“All that is still not worth Liz’s life, my sister.” Yemi Williams tried to convince her friend. “Please, I know she scares easily, let’s get guys to abduct her, threaten her...”

“Ok. We will threaten her.” She finally agreed reluctantly, her mouth twisted in a funny way.

“You promise?” Mrs Yemi Williams asked when she saw the look on her friend’s face.

“I promise. But I still need your support. We need access to the drugs they’ll use to sedate her...”

“Please, we need to be more careful here. Drugs are potential poisons if misused.”

“I know. Just write the prescribed dosage on a piece of paper, so the guys will be sure.” Ella said.

Mrs Yemi Williams placed her head on the Oak garden table that separated them from the garden, in deep thoughts. Finally she shrugged her shoulders and smiled. “You have my support, Ella.”

“Trust me. I asked you to marry your good-for-nothing doctor husband for the money. Now is the time to get it.” Ella assured her again. “By the way, how is the bast*rd?”

“I don’t understand him these days o...he’s acting weird, as if he wants out of the marriage!” Yemi Williams said, fear visible in her eyes.
Ella stamped her feet on the tiled floor.

“You are getting soft, Yemi!”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” Mrs Yemi Williams asked, brows creased.

Ella leaned towards her guest, “It means you have to go back to baba.”

Chapter Thirty One

The hours seemed to move so slowly, and yet evening came too soon. The contradiction was just a reflection of her own inner turmoil. She had sat down at the gate for over an hour before she wangled her way to a secluded corner of the reception area when she saw Tolu heading to the gate. Deji had called to tell her he was held in traffic and it was understandable, considering it was peak period and the long distance he had to cover to the hospital.

She heaved a sigh of relief when she finally saw him drive through the hospital gate. Afraid of being spotted by Ella or even Otunba; either or both of whom she assumed were with the new mum since she had not seen them enter the hospital after her, she dialled his number on her mobile phone and directed him to her corner in the reception.

“Why are you hiding here?” Dr Deji asked jokingly and hugged her lightly.

“I’m scared of Otunba and Ella. I’m sure they are with her.”

Dr Deji smiled and held her hands firmly, “You can’t continue to hide from them. I’ve not set my eyes on Ella since our ‘issue’, yet I’m not scared of her. Cheer up and feel free to go visit the new mum.”

“We have used this hospital as family hospital for over ten years, I don’t want to be disgraced here of all places.” She responded in fear.
A nurse spotted her and walked up to her. “Aunty! Congrats o. E ku ori ire.”

“Thank you, nurse. Please where is she?”

“At private ward 3.” The nurse answered and moved on.

“Hmm...I wish things didn’t turn out this way...I would have been called grandma by that baby...” She noted sadly.

“Stop beating yourself, Liz. You are a good woman and I assure you it will turn out fine in the end.” Deji reassured her as they headed towards the private suites. She turned the knob of room 3 door, her heart leaping to her mouth, ready for the worst.

The door opened well from inside and they both stepped in anxiously.

“Mummy!” Tolu screamed when she saw her at the door. “Darasimi, it’s mummy o.”
Darasimi turned her head towards the door and sat up weakly on her bed. Sola quickly supported her raised frame with a pillow. “ Mummy!” She said weakly, a tear escaped her eyes. “How did you know...?” She asked, surprised at her visit.

“We’ve used this hospital long enough for me to know when my baby has a baby.” She said with a huge smile and everybody smiled warmly too. “That’s Dr Deji, my very good friend.”

Deji moved closer to the bed and patted her lightly on her shoulder. “Congratulations, Darasimi. I can see you are coming round well enough.”

“Thank you sir.” She responded with a faint smile.

“Thanks, Tolu and Sola. But you should have called me, Tolu. It was a nurse that called me.”

“E ma binu m.” Tolu knelt at her feet. “It wasn’t planned to happen this way, and this soon ma.”

“I trust you dear.” She gave her a bear hug and pulled her up. “Sola, how are your parents?”

“They are fine ma.” Sola responded with his trademark air of confidence.

An awkward silence fell on the room, each one thinking about the events of the past few months that had redefined mother and daughter relationship.

“I’m sorry ma, I’m so sorry for everything...” Darasimi said finally, blinking away her tears.

Surprised at the reception she was getting, she reached around her and held her, her head and shoulder on her laps. “Oh, Darasimi, don’t cry!” Liz pleaded.

Darasimi wiped her tearstained face with the edge of a small towel hanging loosely on the metal used to brace her hospital bed. “I’m really sorry ma.”

Liz took a long look at the bundle of joy sleeping soundly in the baby cot at a corner of the room, away from the disturbance of the adults. “I can see my granddaughter is sleeping soundly.”

Unable to contain herself, Liz burst into unrestrained tears herself and held on to Darasimi. “You are still my baby, you know that.” She assured Darasimi, her joy immeasurable. “Where is your mu...Ella?”

“She has not been told ma.” Tolu and Sola chorused in response. Then Darasimi narrated how she had left Lagos when she discoverd her unborn baby was sold already.

“Hmmm...Ella and your dad can’t be aware of that. Besides, Yemi Williams is a wonderful person, I’m sure the money is a donation or something. Please call Ella and your dad.”

“You are an angel and I’m sorry I almost lost you! I’m sorry about yesterday, in Lagos.” She said shamefacedly. She had delivered the baby without complications, but she was still feeling a bit weak from the whole birth process. “Where is my brother?” Darasimi asked with a weak smile.

“He has gone to school.” Liz responded, drawing her head closer to her thigh.

They heard a faint rap on the door. “Should be Dr Kunle.” Tolu said. “Come in.”

The door opened with a loud bang and Ella stomped in and slammed the door. A chill tightened Liz’s shoulders at the sight of Ella. “Why didn’t you call me?” She asked in anger.

Then her eyes swept over the room and her jaw almost dropped at the sight of Liz and Dr Deji...

“How dare you!” She snapped. “How dare you come here to intimidate and harass my daughter and granddaughter with your fake tears? I ought to call security and have you and your ex-convict boyfriend out.”

Liz carefully laid Darasimi’s head on the pillow and stood up, facing Ella, eyeball to eyeball. “You do that, Ella, and you will have a real force to contend with.” She said, “besides, Darasimi is as much my daughter as she’s yours, if not more.”
