I could remember a piece of advice a woman in Diaspora told me. If you are earning more than 300K in Nigeria, you better sit your a*s down and don't bother yourself of travelling for greener pasture. Instead of you to find a way of investing the money in different businesses. You want to run away. If you want more degrees do Distance Learning courses or go for MBA at Lagos Business just like someone said before.

I really do not know what people are doing with degrees.

The highest degrees, masters and Phd holders are working in Nigerian universities with average salaries of N100,000.

Some of them have been collecting half salary since January 2017 due to recession.

People lose sight of PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT. How many degrees does Bill Gates, Jack Ma, Warren Buffet and Mark Zuckerberg have ?

All this running around, is it not to have peace of mind and enough money to spend on future family ?

Invest in PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, not PAPER DEVELOPMENT. If dem tell you the number of Nigerian degree certificates collecting dust inside peoples cupboards, you will know that paper is useless.

Bill Gates will say, " I read 50 books every year"..

No be exam book o..

It depends on the school where you get the MBA from. An MBA is totally worthless if it's not from a top 10 business school.

I agree with this. But I also believe it becomes even more worthless in Western countries if you are black.

A sane person would rather hold on to the 500k jab build his/her career skills and run a good MBA in Nigeria

Do your homework very well before leaving, a boss of mine just left his job for UK, he walks home with not less than #500k in a multinational firm in Nigeria.
My own brother left fed. Gov't. Job for his Msc. He is just too happy he took the decision.
Don't forget to pray well over it.
God be with you.

Bro since your underlined reason is to leave this country why not go through Canada immigration program (express entry) since you have the experience and qualifications.you can do this while still working once you're successful and get your green card you can resign and relocate.

OP...

This is good advice, take it

My line manager at work was gisting me. This lady was in the UK, had finished her masters and gotten her work permit. She now ditched everything for one 400-500k per month job in Nigeria. When she learnt of my plans to leave she encouraged me O. she said she regrets leaving for Naija

When you eventually leave Nigeria, after a few years you'd want to come back for whatever reason. Don't. Bring everyone you love to where you are, live near a place that has african stores, and if the urge to go to africa is strong, just build a house in Ghana. Problem solved.

The thing is that many people don't do research before doing stuff they just follow the herd mentality. It's only in Nigeria I see people doing MBAs without any work experience. If one can't get into a top MBA program it's better to go for an msc at a top school at least if the worse happens you can still go for a PhD. An MBA from a low end school means a miserable life both abroad and in Nigeria.

exactly..maybe it's 50k the OP was tryna type. .lol

Pharmaceuticals industry pay that much at that level ? I wonder how much seniors with 7 years experience will earn in that your company.

Why you considering traveling abroad sef when you can continue to gather experiences and building your career while increasing your bucks.

You wont be able to earn good money and work in your desired field in canada untill you complete your studies and have a PR.

Keep your job and save your money. Go through the Canada PR route, pharmacist have good chances of getting skilled visa.

I find it hard to believe your industry pay that much at your level.

Don't mind him , his official salary in is not up to that , from his tone I can tell he is a pharm rep that is also doing chuwa chuwa by doubling as a distributor and that's why he says his take home pay is between 400k-500k ..

Go for your MBA here in 9ja, millions of folks out there envy you and your current position. You can grow in your industry and remember that degrees or certificates cannot take the place of your hard earned years of experience, all the best in your future career, cheers!

Hi nairalanders please I am currently about taking a decision regarding my future. I am a 26 years old single guy. I currently work in a company where I earn between 400-500k monthly( salary, allowance and personal hustling)... Now the issue is that I am contemplating on travelling to Canada to study pharmacy with the intention of staying there permanently after school or do a professional MBA here in Nigeria with the aim of growing through the ranks in the pharmaceutical industry. Please I need your contributions...

NB; cost of obtaining a pharmacy degree in Canada is about 10M...Should I invest the money in a business?

my brother invest your money in Nigeria and school in Nigeria also, Canada will always be available , Nigeria is the best place to do business cos you are already familiar with the market, looking forward to seeing you as the next pharmaceutical big thing in Nigeria

Remember he added side hustle too.

For many Nigerians, their side hustle pays even more than their main job e.g. me.

OP first of all, 400k per month for now is just there and not lucrative considering the purchasing power of the Nigerian Naira.

I am sure you have your 10m ready for the Canada trip, this is what you should do, continue your work in-country for some more time and triple that amount, you have nothing to loose as you would have gotten more experience and more money.

When you triple that amount, you don't need to come to Nairaland, on your own like this, you go just dey get divine inspiration on what to do :- undecided.

You are presently confused now because you do not have more than enough money, maybe all you have now is just enough for the trip hence your fears.

I wish you the very best of life, God bless your hustle.

boss we all are not the same.. What worked for mR A can't work for MR B.. With a 500k jab in Nigerian, i repeat with a 500k jab in Nigerian. A wise man can utilise it judiciously and become a multi-millionaire. The problem is just that so many Nigerians are too naive they believe the so called abroad is there land flowing with milk and honey. VERY WRONG MENTALITY

First things first. How are you so convinced you will be happier settling down in Canada? Away from home, kindred, ur culture, freedom of expression?
Well that's left for you to answer.

If your answer is you are not convinced, no other deliberation is needed.

Otherwise, if you are convinced, you won't be asking us this question.

Thanks a lot...The issue is that I just wanna leave this country for good...And since am already in the pharma industry I want to simply get a Pharm.D and work as a pharmacist in Canada... You will get a good job soon...

Plan in detail, don't just leave because u are hell bent on leaving fr good

Plan to the last detail, make contingency plans and counter plans. It will surely benefit you in the end if you plan very well

Instead of MSc or MBA, since you have the experience, why not opt for skilled worker entry instead? That's a faster way to get PR and settle down easily

And lastly do not quit they Job unless you have thay Visa in your hands and you have a way to get the PR. The travel section should be great to find out such information

The lie is that you need 3 years of work experience before schooling for an MBA. Should 3 years of work experience at McDonalds qualify for admission into an MBA program? I know what I'm speaking of because I was accepted into one, then later turned it down because I realized none of my associates were able to obtain jobs with their degree. The requirements for Ivy league schools may be different, but be assured those jobs are given primarily through connections or to those who went back to school after obtaining the job.

You can't get into an MBA (a good one) in America without at least 3 years work experience
I have quoted my comment above. Show me a good school in America where they don't request for at least 3 years work experience. If you have 3 years work experience in McDonalds and the school finds you a good fit for their program, then they are likely to admit you. McDonalds is not all about flipping burgers.
Your point highlighted simply means it is no a "good" school. Check employment report of all good MBA programs in the us and you'll see that for most programs, over 80% of graduates have jobs or start their own businesses within 3 months of graduating.
In the last FT ranking, 51 US MBA programs were in the top 100. Only 4 had employment report below 80% after 3 months of graduation.

Re: Quitting My Lucrative Job For A Degree In Canada by duabba: 10:40am On Jul 20, 2017
I think the issue should not be about money earn-able in Canada, but more about the quality of life.

In most western countries, you WOULD pay bills and tax. You can earn plenty (e.g N4m equivalent monthly) but spend just as much trying to live and survive. Many people traveled and are not able to build a house in the village cos they cannot save to send funds home (some others do have it easy). Like someone mentioned earlier, you may earn N400k monthly in Nigeria but you live like a king and even have savings; this is after carrying all your responsibilities.

My advice: Take study leave if you must go to school, graduate with good grades and during this period, consider the issues (salary, rent, tax, immigration policies, racism, business climate, etc) then make your decision to stay or run back and take your job which can have better prospects cos of your new degree. But please don't travel based on hearsay.

Truth is we never value Nigeria until you travel to see somethings or have some experiences.

May God Almighty guide you and continually bless Nigeria!
