I can remember the night my aunt, Kemi came to our house rolling on the ground and shedding tears, her hair was tattered, she was spotting a black eye and we thought she was robbed and beaten. We made efforts to contact the police station but she begged us not to. It was obvious something was off, we dialed the number of her husband Uncle Tomi but there was no reply, we tried several times until his phone was switched off. My brother kept fuming, punching the walls, but Aunty kemi kept begging him giving excuses like, what would her friends say,  how would her church members see her. We had to beg her to even seek medical attention and downplayed the case of domestic abuse with the doctors so that they do not give a report to the police. she spent months in the hospital and  not once did uncle Tomi come to see his wife.

He was the definition of a useless man. He was unemployed for 2 years after some downsizing in the company he worked for and Aunty kemi immediately assumed the role of the breadwinner thereafter. She owned a big hair saloon in Lagos with workers who Tomi constantly had extra marital affairs with. You can imagine how juicy the gossips that went on in the saloon would be.

It became personal when uncle Tomi shamelessly asked to have sex with me then, I knew I could take his nonsense no more, immediately I went to aunty Kemi to report, and what was her reaction? She covered for the shameless dog with the excuse that men of his age are attracted to other women but wouldn't abandon their wives. It was then I knew she was under a spell. Maybe she was acting this way  probably because she married at an older age and she was desperate due the pressure from family and friends.

 I think she's either too stupid or very brave to have stayed in the marriage for this long, the heartaches, abuse and neglect is just too much for a sane person to handle but keep seeking for any atom of love she can get from that man. Unfortunately she's yet to realize that she doesn't need the man.
